越後裕哉が大会初のプロ優勝！

関西ブランズウィック会プロアマフェスティバルと同じく11月23日（木）、立川スターレーン（東京）にて承認大会・第3回三多摩プロアマオープンが開催されました。

こちらは決勝6G・準決勝3Gを投球して上位8名が決勝シュートアウトへ進出。シュートアウト1回戦はナショナルメンバーとジュニア選手による谷合　貴志包囲網となりましたが、谷合が299ピンとパーフェクトならずもハイスコアを打って包囲網を打破。しかし続く準決勝では三多摩地区所属プロの酒井崇裕が意地を見せて谷合らを押さえて勝ち上がります。

そしてトップシードで待ち構える越後裕哉と酒井による優勝決定戦は、中盤からストライクを繋いだ越後が先輩・酒井を倒して大会3回目にして初のプロによる優勝を果たしました。　

 

砂子明廣　優勝！

11月23日（木）にイーグルボウル（大阪）にて承認大会・第16回関西ブランズウィック会プロアマフェスティバルが開催され、砂子明廣が優勝しましたことご報告致します。

予選6G・準決勝3G・決勝3Gの12Gトータルで競われ、決勝2G目にパーフェクトを達成した砂子が、今年6月にS・フルール杯で優勝した石田万音選手を押さえて優勝を果たしました。

女子の部・名和 秋、男子の部・日置 秀一が優勝！

先日11月18月（土）・19（日）の2日間にわたり、第25回中国新聞杯広島オープンボウリングトーナメントが広電ボウルにて開催され、女子の部は名和 秋、男子の部は日置秀一が優勝致しました。

男女ともに予選8G、準決勝6Gを投球し、上位8名が決勝シュートアウトへ進出。女子はトップシードの名和と2位通過の川口富美恵による優勝決定戦となり、名和がぴったりワンマーク差で大会初優勝をもぎ取りました。

また男子の部ではディフェンディングチャンピオンの大下耕平選手と、トップシードの日置が優勝決定戦で激突。プロの意地で大下選手の連覇を阻み、こちらも大会初制覇となりました。

プロを制して宮地 優 選手が優勝！

11月12日（日）になわてボウル（大阪）で開催されました第3回なわてボウルプロアマトーナメントにて、宮地 優 選手が優勝されました。

予選6G・準決勝2Gを投げて各シフト14名ずつが決勝シュートアウトへ進出。4位で進出した宮地選手は1回戦から投球し、粘り腰で勝ち進み準決勝では髙橋俊彦、優勝決定戦で水本有希と対戦し、どちらも大差をつけての勝利となりました。

Belmonte Advances to Pepsi PBA Scorpion Championship Finals for Second WSOB IX Animal Pattern Telecast Appearance

Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte won his best-of-three Pepsi PBA Scorpion Championship presented by Go Bowling! Round-of-8 match at the National Bowling Stadium Thursday to make his second consecutive GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX animal pattern ESPN finals telecast.

Bowling on the 45-foot PBA Scorpion lane oil pattern, the three-time PBA Player of the Year also made his 18th career WSOB telecast by beating rookie Raymond Lussier of Canada, 2-0 (235-189, 276-237).

Belmonte, a 15-time Tour winner that includes eight majors, qualified for the Cheetah Championship finals earlier Thursday with a 2-1 Round-of-8 win over Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y.

Belmonte, who also qualified second for the PBA World Championship finals earlier in WSOB IX, added to his PBA major win total earlier this season with wins in the Barbasol PBA Players Championship and USBC Masters.

The Scorpion Championship finals will be taped Saturday by ESPN at 6 p.m. PT at the National Bowling Stadium and live streamed on ESPN3. The Finals will air on ESPN Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. ET.

In addition to being part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties, the Shark Championship is also part of the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

Defending PBA Player of the Year EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., made his first WSOB IX finals appearance by beating Arturo Quintero of Mexico 2-1 (220-157, 188-247, 205-176). Tackett, an eight-time Tour winner will be trying for his third win of the season.

Brandon Novak of Chillicothe, Ohio, made his second consecutive WSOB Scorpion Championship finals appearance by beating Matt McNiel of Minneapolis, Minn., 2-1 (199-205, 279-237, 223-196). In 2016 Novak finished fourth in the Scorpion Championship.

Rounding out the Scorpion Championship finals telecast will be Shawn Maldonado of Houston who swept England’s Dom Barrett 2-0 (234-232, 225-206).

All animal pattern championship ESPN finals telecasts (Chameleon, Shark, Cheetah and Scorpion) will use a format where the four finalists simultaneously bowl one game on the same pair of lanes with the top two scorers advancing to a head-to-head final match.

 

Svensson, Belmonte Headline All-International PBA Cheetah Championship Finals Field

Two-handers Jesper Svensson of Sweden and Jason Belmonte of Australia won best-of-three Round of 8 matches Thursday to headline an all-international field advancing to the PBA Cheetah Championship presented by PBA Challenge Mobile Game finals which will be taped Saturday by ESPN at 4:15 p.m. PST and live streamed on ESPN3.

Svensson qualified for his second GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties telecast by sweeping PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., 2-0 (259-214, 268-201).

Svensson, a six-time PBA Tour winner, earned top-qualifier honors for the PBA World Championship finals after cashers’ rounds were completed earlier in the week.

Belmonte, who qualified second for the World Championship finals, beat Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 2-1, in his best-of-three match to also make his second WSOB IX finals telecast. After losing the first game 234-206, Belmonte came back to win the next two, 259-189 and 300-214.

For Belmonte, a 15-time Tour winner and three-time PBA Player of the Year, the Cheetah Championship finals marks his 17th World Series of Bowling telecast appearance.

The Cheetah Championship, which will be aired on ESPN Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. ET, is also part of the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

Making it two players from Australia in the finals, Sam Cooley beat PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., 2-0 (243-212, 279-194) to advance to his first WSOB final. Cooley’s best Tour finish was third in the 2016 Barbasol PBA Players Championship.

Two-time PBA Tour winner Thomas Larsen of Denmark rounded out the all-international finals field by sweeping South Africa’s Francois Louw, 2-0 (232-189, 247-232), to advance to the final.

The finals telecasts will use a format where the four finalists simultaneously bowl one game on the same pair of lanes with the top two scorers advancing to a head-to-head final match.

Two Tour Winners and Two Players Making Their First PBA Tour Telecast Advance to PBA Shark Championship Finals

Two PBA Tour champions and two players making their first PBA Tour telecasts won best-of-three Round of 8 matches Wednesday evening to advance to the PBA Shark Championship presented by Xtra Frame finals which will be taped Saturday by ESPN at 2:30 p.m. PST and live streamed on ESPN3.

Four-time PBA Tour winner Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., and two-time winner Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., both swept their best-of-three matches. Kent defeated PBA World Championship top qualifier Jesper Svensson of Sweden, 2-0 (233-215, 248-226), while Daugherty beat Thomas Larsen of Denmark, 2-0 (234-225, 216-215).

Charlie Brown Jr., a 36-year-old rookie bowling in his first PBA Tour event, swept Shota Kawazoe of Japan, 2-0, to make his first PBA Tour telecast. Brown, of Grandville, Mich., had to win a three-frame roll-off, 29-27, in the first game after a 257-257 tie and then in the second game narrowly beat Kawazoe 248-244.

Bowling in his fourth World Series of Bowling, England’s Richie Teece finally broke through to make his first Tour telecast by beating Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., 2-1 (212-243, 257-215, 226-212).

The finals telecasts will use a format where the four finalists simultaneously bowl one game on the same pair of lanes with the top two scorers advancing to a head-to-head final match. The Shark finals will air on ESPN Sunday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. ET.

The Shark Championship is part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties and the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

Kent, the 2014 PBA Rookie of the Year, will be trying for his third win of the season having won the Oklahoma Open and Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open last summer.

Daugherty, who will be trying for his first win of the season, has a seventh and three ninth-place finishes this season. His last PBA Tour win came in the 2016 Wolf Open.

Liz Johnson Among Four Players Advancing to PBA Chameleon Championship Finals

Liz Johnson, Wes Malott, Anthony Pepe and Tom Smallwoodswept their respective best-of-three Round of 8 matches to advance to Saturday’s finals of the PBA Chameleon Championship presented by Reno Tahoe Wednesday afternoon that will be taped by ESPN at noon PST and streamed live on ESPN3.

The finals telecasts will use a format where the four finalists simultaneously bowl one game on the same pair of lanes with the top two scorers advancing to a head-to-head final match. The Chameleon finals will air on ESPN Sunday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. ET.

The Chameleon Championship is part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties and the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

Johnson, a USBC Hall of Famer and three-time reigning Professional Women’s Bowling Association Player of the Year, beat Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz. 2-0 (239-224, 228-214) to advance to the finals.

Johnson, a native of western New York who now lives in Palatine, Ill., is a two-time PBA regional champion, and has a best PBA Tour finish of second which came in the 2005 Banquet Open. She also owns a record 10 PWBA Tour major titles. She will be hoping to join Kelly Kulick, the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions winner, as the only women to win a PBA Tour title.

Malott, of Pflugerville, Texas, a 10-time Tour winner, made his first TV final at the National Bowling Stadium by beating Swedish two-hander and PBA World Championship top qualifier Jesper Svensson 2-0 (279-258, 255-214).

Pepe, of Elmhurst, N.Y., whose first PBA Tour title came in the 2014 Cheetah Championship, will be trying for his second PBA Tour title advancing to the finals by beating Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., 2-0 (202-202 won roll-off 20-19, 279-233).

Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., advanced to the finals with a 2-0 (249-178, 231-225) win over Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat. Smallwood, the 2009 PBA World Championship winner, will be trying for his third PBA Tour title.

Elimination rounds for the Shark Championship presented by Xtra Frame continue this afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT. All competition will be covered by PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

決勝トーナメントをいずれも大差で勝ち上がった堂元は、準決勝で糸山賀津人を破り優勝決定戦に進出。渡邉虎太郎との対戦でも先輩プロとしての風格を見せて約40ピン差で勝利、大会制覇となりました。

Jesper Svensson Cruises in Last Two Rounds to Earn PBA World Championship Finals Top Qualifier Honors

After six days of competition and 60 games on four different lane conditions, Sweden’s Jesper Svensson averaged 241 to earn top qualifier honors for the stepladder finals of the PBA World Championship.

The 22-year-old left-handed two-hander finished with a 14,465 60-game pinfall total at the National Bowling Stadium Tuesday to lead right-handed two-hander Jason Belmonte of Australia who qualified a distant second for the finals with a 14,129 pinfall total.

“Obviously a major (win) means more than the rest but it will be like bowling a new tournament,” said Svensson, who as top qualifier needs only to win one match for the title. “I have to forget that I led the qualifying rounds by so many pins and focus on the best 10 frames I can bowl.

“It’s really a different mindset than qualifying,” Svensson added. “If you bowl a bad frame or a bad game there’s plenty of time to make up for it. In the championship match, at the end of the day, it’s whoever throws it the best the quickest.”

In Tuesday’s final cashers’ round bowled on the 42-foot Scorpion lane condition, Svensson bowled games of 183, 255, 224, 224 and 246 after bowling games of 233, 247, 258, 257 and 255 earlier in the day on the 33-foot Cheetah lane condition.

The World Championship finals will be taped on Sunday, Nov. 19 at noon PST (live streamed on ESPN3, taped for telecast on ESPN on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. EST).

The PBA World Championship is the crown jewel of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties, and the final major championship of the PBA’s 2017 season. WSOB IX is also a part of the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

Svensson, already a six-time PBA Tour winner, will be trying for his second PBA major title after winning the 2016 PBA Tournament of Champions, while Belmonte, a 15-time Tour winner, will be trying for his ninth major, which would put him alone in third place among the PBA’s all-time major title winners. Neither player has won the PBA World Championship.

Belmonte will also be trying for his third major title of the season winning the Barbasol PBA Players Championship and USBC Masters earlier this year.

“This win would be important for a number of reasons,” said Belmonte, a three-time PBA Player of the Year. “It would be a major title I haven’t won and it would go a long way to securing another Player of the Year honor.”

Finishing third for the finals was seven-time Tour winner Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., who is also trying for his second major, after winning the 2015 U.S. Open. Ciminelli posted a 14,031 pinfall.

Two-time Tour winner Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., another two-hander, earned the fourth qualifying position finishing with a 13,931 pinfall and PBA Rookie of the Year contender Matt Sanders of Evansville, Ind., bowled a 268 in the final game of the round to secure the fifth qualifying position for the finals with a 13,830 pinfall. Sanders won his first PBA Tour title earlier this season in the Xtra Frame Billy Hardwick Memorial Open.

World Championship qualifying and cashers’ rounds were conducted on the 39-foot Chameleon, 45-foot Shark, 33-foot Cheetah and 42-foot Scorpion PBA lane conditioning patterns.

World Series of Bowling action continues Wednesday with PBA Chameleon presented by Reno Tahoe and Shark Championship presented by Xtra Frame elimination rounds beginning at 11 a.m. PST. Fans can catch all the action on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

Jesper Svensson Takes Commanding PBA World Championship Lead After Shark Round

Sweden’s left-handed, two-handed star, Jesper Svensson averaged 250 for 10 games to take a commanding lead after the Chameleon and Shark rounds of the PBA World Championship Monday at the National Bowling Stadium.

The PBA World Championship is the crown jewel of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Resorts Properties, and the final major championship of the PBA’s 2017 season. WSOB IX is also a part of the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule.

The 22-year-old Svensson, who entered the PBA World Championship as the qualifying leader, rolled games of 246, 224, 247, 268 and 269 on the 45-foot Shark lane conditioning pattern after posting games of 237, 247, 245, 237 and 269 on the 39-foot Chameleon pattern earlier in the day to finish with a 12,083 50-game overall pinfall total, good for a 241.6 average.

Svensson leads Australia’s Jason Belmonte, a right-handed two-handed player, who is 303 pins behind in second with a 11,780 50-game pinfall total.

“I’m the guy they want to beat at this point so the thing to do now is stay focused,” said Svensson, who is the winner of six PBA Tour titles including the 2016 PBA Tournament of Champions. “Today, I bowled well in both rounds but it felt good to have a strong finish on the Shark pattern. To this point I’ve been able to avoid major mistakes and have been able to do what I do best.”

Svensson is trying for his second PBA major title; Belmonte is after major title number nine, which would put him alone in third place among the PBA’s all-time major title winners. Neither player has won the PBA World Championship.

In third place heading into Tuesday afternoon’s qualifying round on the 33-foot Cheetah lane condition was another two-hander, Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., with 11,625 pins. Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., finished the day in fourth with 11,601 and 2009 PBA World Championship winner Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., finished fifth with 11,553.

The PBA World Championship cashers’ rounds will conclude with five games on the 42-foot Scorpion Tuesday at 5 p.m. The top five bowlers after a total of 60 games will advance to the World Championship finals on Sunday, Nov. 19 at noon PST (live streamed on ESPN3, taped for telecast on ESPN on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. EST.

Big Scorpion Round Helps Mexico’s Arturo Quintero Advance; Bosox Star Mookie Betts Rolls 300 Game

Two bowlers rose from the brink of despair to elation Sunday in the Pepsi PBA Scorpion Championship presented by GoBowling.com at the National Bowling Stadium, the final round of qualifying for the PBA World Championship.

One of the two – Mexico’s Arturo Quintero – rose from 86th place into the PBA World Championship field of 49 finalists in 40th place after leading the Scorpion round with a 242 average. The other bowler – Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts – followed his two worst games of the World Series with a 300 game, his first perfect game in professional competition. Although he didn’t advance, Betts demonstrated he has skills beyond his baseball talents.

Also in the mix as qualifying came to an end after 40 combined games on four different animal pattern qualifying events, Sweden’s Jesper Svensson emerged as the PBA World Championship’s leading qualifier with a 9,5,94 pinfall total, topping Australia’s Jason Belmonte by 189 pins heading into the two-day, four-round World Championship cashers’ round beginning Monday. Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich.; Thomas Larsen of Denmark, and Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., rounded out the top five World Championship qualifiers.

Sunday’s competition on the 42-foot Scorpion lane conditioning pattern was the fourth and final animal pattern qualifying stages that are part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Resorts Reno Properties, and the Go Bowling! PBA Tour. Quintero led early and led late after bowling below expectations the three previous rounds.

“I woke up this morning and asked God for help,” Quintero said. “I needed to bowl really good to make the World Championship cut. The Scorpion pattern was the toughest for a lot of guys, but I made the cut in that event last year and for me, it was the easiest pattern of all. It depends on your style of bowling, and I got a new ball drilled, which I used the entire round.

Quintero’s 2,420 pinfall total for 10 games in the Scorpion round topped Devin Bidwell of Wichita, Kan., by 24 pins. Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., was third with 2,386 pins followed by BJ Moore III of Greensburg, Pa., with a 2,384 total and PBA rookie Kyle Sherman with a 2,372 total. The 16 players who advance to the Scorpion match play elimination round next Thursday included players from Mexico, England, Canada and Australia in addition to the U.S.

During the Scorpion round, Betts created the most excitement by bowling his first perfect game in one of the most prestigious professional tournaments in the world.

“I bowled the whole final five games without a 200 game,” Betts grinned, noting he completed his WSOB IX with games of 169, 300, 199, 198 and 193. He completed his 40 games in a tie for 158th place with a 205.6 average, far below the World Championship cut, but 15 pins better than his average in his 2015 debut in the WSOB.

Comparing his 10th frame to coming to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning of a close major league game, Betts said, “I’m much more comfortable coming to bat in a situation like that. After I threw the first strike in the 10th, I turned around and saw the crowd and I’ll admit, I was pretty nervous. I just used my experience in baseball, my breathing techniques and things like that.

“Any time you shoot 150, 160 games, there’s some frustration but we had four games to go. I figured I’d turn it around at some point, and it happened the next game.

“Overall I accomplished my goal this year. I bowled pretty well on all of the patterns, so I had to be happy,” Betts said. “I couldn’t come in here expecting to make any cuts or make any money, so I set some goals I was able to reach and I did it.”

Heading into the PBA World Championship cashers’ round, which will involve additional five-game rounds on each of the four animal patterns Monday and Tuesday at 1 and 5 p.m. each day, Svensson not only rolled into the lead but also led a group of five international players who will represent The World in a special team match vs. the USA at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17. The USA vs. The World team match at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, will be live streamed on ESPN and taped for telecast on Sunday, Dec. 10, on ESPN.

Members of the USA team will be Tom Smallwood, Saginaw, Mich.; Ryan Ciminelli, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Kyle Troup, Taylorsville, N.C.; Matt McNiel, Minneapolis, and Bill O’Neill. Members of The World team will be Svensson, Belmonte, Denmark’s Thomas Larsen, England’s Dom Barrett and Malaysia’s Muhammad Rafiq Ismail, who won a one-game roll-off over Japan’s Shota Kawazoe for the fifth spot, 248-176.

Denmark’s Thomas Larsen Averages 255.6 to Lead GEICO PBA WSOB IX Cheetah Qualifying

Denmark’s Thomas Larsen, one of Europe’s premier shot-makers, averaged 255.6 to top qualifying in the PBA Cheetah Championship presented by PBA Challenge Mobile Games at the National Bowling Stadium Saturday.

Larsen, a 27-year-old right-hander and two-time PBA Tour title winner, rolled games of 257, 238, 268, 258 and 278 in his first block and 258, 254, 223, 256 and 266 in Saturday’s second five-game round to finish with a 10-game total of 2,556 pins, overtaking Andrew Cain of Phoenix who broke the PBA’s five-game scoring record with a 1,352 total in the afternoon round. The previous five-game record was 1,350 by Joel Reyes in Fountain Valley, Calif., in 2007.

The Cheetah round was the third and shortest (33 feet of oil) of four animal pattern qualifying stages that are part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Resorts Reno Properties, and the Go Bowling! PBA Tour.

“When I had it today, I struck a ton and when I didn’t, I was able to make the adjustments pretty quickly, so, yes, it was a really good day,” Larsen said. “I always seem to bowl well in Reno, and in the World Series. I really like this tournament.”

Larsen won both of his PBA Tour titles in international competition (Abu Dhabi in 2013 and Kuwait in 2014). He finished third in both the 2015 and 2016 Chameleon Championship, so winning a title on U.S. soil is “what I really want. That would be awesome.”

Trailing Larsen in the Cheetah standings were Sweden’s Jesper Svensson with a 2,519 total, Cain with 2,511 pins, Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., with an even 2,500 and Thailand’s Kim Bolleby with a 2,476 total.

The top 16 players who advanced to the Cheetah single-elimination match play competition on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. again included a diverse international group representing Denmark, Sweden, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, Australia, Canada and the U.S.

Japanese Star Shota Kawazoe Leads PBA WSOB IX Shark Qualifying in Quest of Dream PBA Title

Japan’s Shota Kawazoe, one of his home country’s premier players for more than a decade, rolled into the lead in the PBA Shark Championship presented by Xtra Frame at the National Bowling Stadium with a fundamentally-sound 248 average over the 10-game qualifying portion of the event.

Thursday’s competition on the long Shark 45-foot pattern was the second of four animal pattern qualifying stages that are part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Resorts Reno Properties, and the Go Bowling! PBA Tour.

Kawazoe, a 28-year-old bowling center “head pro” in Japan, has spent half of this year in the United States, bowling PBA Regional and Xtra Frame PBA Tour events to prepare for the WSOB IX in quest of his dream – a PBA Tour title. Thursday, he rolled games of 268, 227, 259, 279 and 223 in the early round and he completed his Shark qualifying Thursday evening with games of 238, 227, 259, 257 and 243 for a 10-game total of 2,480 pins. He led qualifying by 49 pins over Norway’s Glenn Pedersen, who is making his WSOB debut. Three pins behind Pedersen was Chameleon top qualifier Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., with 2,428 pins; Thomas Larsen of Denmark with a 2,423 total and two-hander Kyle Troup of Taylorville, N.C., with 2,420 pins.

“A PBA title is my dream,” Kawazoe said, noting finishing second in the 2017 DHC PBA Japan Invitational after out-averaging the field in Tokyo by 20 pins, “was heart breaking. I hope, I hope I can win here.”

Kawazoe may not be a known commodity in the United States, but among his bowling feats in Japan was bowling back-to-back 300 games on live television, earning US$300,000 in bonus prize money. “A miracle,” he said with a laugh.

The top 16 players who advanced to the Shark single-elimination match play competition on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 3:30 p.m. again included a strong international presence including players from Japan, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, England and Germany in addition to the United States

Tom Smallwood Averages 243.9 to Top Chameleon Championship Field as PBA WSOB IX Begins

Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., set a blistering scoring pace, averaging 243.9 Wednesday to lead the field of 195 qualifiers in the PBA Chameleon Championship presented by Reno Tahoe at the National Bowling Stadium.

The Chameleon Championship was the first of four animal pattern qualifying stages that are part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Resorts Reno Properties, and the Go Bowling! PBA Tour. Competition leading into the PBA World Championship continues Thursday with two five-game PBA Shark Championship presented by Xtra Frame qualifying squads.

Smallwood, at age 40 and in search of his third career PBA Tour title, threw games of 246, 245, 278, 244 and 248 in the five-game morning round and was almost as consistent in the evening round with games of 227, 227, 244, 258 and 222 for a 10-game total of 2,439 pins and a 45-pin margin over second-place qualifier Jesper Svensson of Sweden. Canada’s Francois Lavoie and Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., were tied for third place with 2,380 pins and Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., was fifth with 2,363 pins.

“I don’t know who to thank for not starting the World Series with the Cheetah pattern,” Smallwood said of the traditional opening event, a shorter oiling pattern that he typically doesn’t care for. “I get by on the shorter patterns, but given a choice…

“The new (Chameleon 39-foot pattern) was a little more playable for me,” he added, “and only bowling five games each block helped because the pattern didn’t break down as much for me. I think I had two open frames all day, and I was able to throw a four- or five-bagger each game, which obviously helped.

“I’m usually 200 pins behind the pace after the first animal pattern, so it’s nice to get out front early this year.”

With his strong start, Smallwood, who won the 2009 PBA World Championship for his first title, also became the early leader in 2017 PBA World Championship qualifying which is based on combined 40-pin qualifying totals for the Chameleon, Shark, Cheetah and Scorpion animal pattern events.

Also in the field is Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts, who is bowling in the PBA’s World Series for the second time. He got his baptism in 2015, missed last year while recovering from an injury, but anxiously awaited another shot this year.

Betts again demonstrated he lacks experience bowling against the best in the world, but he has bowling skills that have impressed most of the bowling experts watching the event. Betts put on a respectable performance Wednesday, averaging 202.6 for his 10 games, including a 278 to lead off the tournament. He finished opening day in 153rd place in the field of 195 players.

The top 16 players who advanced to the Chameleon single-elimination match play competition on Wednesday, Nov. 15, included players from the United States, Sweden, Canada, Norway, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia.

Matthew Sanders of Evansville, Ind., won the 16th berth in match play with a 246-186 win over Thailand’s Annop Arromsaranon in a roll-off to break the tie for 16th after they tied with 2,322 pins.

The ninth annual WSOB, which officially kicked off the 2017-18 Go Bowling! PBA Tour schedule, continues Thursday with 10 qualifying games on the Shark 45 oiling pattern, 10 games Saturday on the Cheetah 33 pattern and 10 games Sunday on the Scorpion 42 pattern. Norm Duke, Francois Lavoie Wins PBA Challenge Titles to Kick Off GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX

Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., and 2016 PBA Rookie of the Year Francois Lavoie of Quebec City, Quebec, kicked off the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Proprieties, with victories in the special PBA50 Tour and PBA Regional Challenge events Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium.

Duke, a 38-time PBA Tour champion who endured a second-place plagued season in PBA “senior tour” competition, completed a perfect match play round with a 222-212 victory over newly-elected PBA Hall of Famer Ron Mohr of Las Vegas to win the PBA50 Tour Challenge title, and an $8,000 prize heading into the start of World Series competition Wednesday.

“There’s no place worse than second,” Duke said after winning an eight of his matches to reach the title match against Mohr. “It’s a nice start to the World Series and it’s a testament to how I bowled all season on the PBA50 Tour. Those second place finishes got in the way of the Player of the Year, which was a goal, but you have to take pride in knowing you were in the race all the way to the end.

“I knew I had to change my momentum coming into the World Series. You can lose with big games, and win with lesser games, but it’s winning that’s important. After all of the work I put into the U.S. Open (he finished fifth last week), I knew that was going to pay dividends this week, and it already has.”

Lavoie, who currently lives in Wichita, Kan., where he starred as a collegian and began his PBA Regional career, dominated the PBA Southwest Region in competition points in 2017 and won a frame-for-frame battle over PBA Midwest Regional points champ AJ Johnson of Oswego, Ill., 247-235, when Johnson failed to strike on his first shot in the 10th frame.

“Bowling in the PBA Regional program when I was in college helped me get ready for this,” Lavoie said of his impressive PBA Tour debut, including the 2016 U.S. Open title. “Everyone in the Challenge field bowled well in the regional program all year, so I knew it was going to be a tough event to win. It’s nice to have this under my belt before the World Series gets started.”

Both of the Challenge events culminated season-long competition points qualifying to allow players to reach the World Series, and entitled each of the competitors to paid entries into the World Series as well. The Challenge events, which were the debut events contested on the new PBA Earl Anthony 42 lane oiling pattern, were covered live on PBA’s online video streaming service, Xtra Frame.

松永裕美、ジャパンオープン初制覇！

中学生の時に出会った相手と優勝決定戦という大舞台で再会するという、劇的なドラマで締めくくった男子マスターズ。そんな男子に負けず劣らずのドラマ、そして名勝負が、女子クイーンズでもまた一つ生まれました。

10代から20代といった若い世代の台頭目覚ましく、世代交代の感のある女子プロボウリング界にあって、なお別格の存在感を放つ姫路 麗と松永裕美。

しかしチーム戦・ダブルス戦・シングルス戦のすべてで入賞した姫路に対し、松永はダブルス戦のみ入賞、さらには自分でも「泣きそうになった」と語った138ピンで滑り出しのチーム戦など、オールエベンツは奮わず71位の成績でクイーンズ予選へと進みます。

0スタートのクイーンズ予選でも折り返し地点の4Gで45位。ジャパンオープンとは相性が悪いのかと思われましたが、なんと後半4Gで一挙5位まで浮上、続く準決勝でとうとう姫路をも抜いて首位を奪取します。

一方、2年前の大会でアマチュアながら3位入賞を果たし、翌年プロ入りした坂本かや、今年の実技トップ合格者・霜出佳奈らの新人、石本美来選手に佐藤悠里選手ら現役ナショナルチームメンバー、そして大根谷 愛と佐藤まさみのタイトルホルダーといった若手実力派達が上位を占め、決勝ダブルエリミネーション進出を果たしました。

第37回大会から3年連続でアマチュアに優勝を許している女子クイーンズ。今年こそはプロ同士の優勝決定戦をとプロ達も必死に戦い、大根谷が敗者ゾーンで佐藤選手、石本選手を食い止めますが、大根谷もまた敗者復活戦3回戦目で霜出に敗れて敗退となりました。

そして勝者ゾーンでは3回戦で松永と姫路が激突。鍔迫り合いの末にわずか4ピン差で松永が勝利し、姫路を敗者ゾーンへ追いやります。

1回戦でナショナルチームの後輩・石本選手に敗れてから敗者ゾーンを勝ち上がって来た霜出と、松永にリベンジしたい姫路による3位決定戦は、大先輩を相手に緊張したと言いつつも、霜出がターキーで好調な滑り出し。姫路は1フレーム目こそストライクでしたが、2フレーム目はスペア、3フレーム目でスプリットと流れに乗れません。それでも5・6フレーム目でダブルを決めて霜出との差を詰めますが、霜出は7フレーム目から再びストライクを繋げ、姫路に追いつくことを許しません。

後半8フレーム目から4連続ストライクに成功し、オープンフレームを出しながらも222ピンとスコアをまとめた姫路でしたが、霜出に届くこと叶わず3位で終了となりました。

双璧の一人である姫路を倒し、ルーキーイヤー初優勝に王手を掛けた霜出。しかし優勝するには待ち構える松永を2度倒さなければなりません。

越えるには高すぎる壁として立ちはだかる松永も、しかしジャパンオープンでは優勝経験がありません。どちらも喉から手が出るほど欲しいビッグタイトルを賭けての最後の戦いは、霜出がダブルで滑り出します。

しかし3フレーム目、1投目は4番ピンを残す9本カウント、続く2投目で失投してしまいオープンフレームにしてしまった霜出。対する松永は3フレーム目からストライクを連発し、右レーンの変化に捕まってしまった霜出をぐんぐん引き離します。

終盤でようやくダブルに成功した霜出は、そのままオールウェーを決めて少しでも松永にプレッシャーを与えたいところでしたが、10フレーム1投目でストライクが決まらなかった時点で敗北が確定。松永も男子マスターズの安里選手と同じく、最終フレームを前に優勝を決めました。

ところでこの先に優勝した安里選手と松永は同じ高校出身の先輩後輩の間柄。さらに親交の厚い朋友でもあり、その安里選手から「俺はやったぞ」と言わんばかりの視線をもらい、一層奮起したのだとか。

世代交代も何のその、強い松永は健在だと、ジャパンオープン制覇をもって証明してくれました！

安里秀策選手、ジャパンオープンの頂点に立つ！

男子864名、女子432名、計1,296名のボウラーが日本中から集結し、プロアマの頂点を決する国内最大の祭典、ジャパンオープンボウリング選手権が幕を閉じました。

選手達はチーム戦、ダブルス戦、シングルス戦それぞれ3Gを投げ、9Gトータルのオールエベンツ上位150名がマスターズに進出。マスターズ予選はスコアの持ち込みがない0スタートの為ここで打てば頂点を狙えると、それまでの仲間とともにボウリングを楽しむお祭り雰囲気から一転して、選手達の表情が本気モードに変わります。

ナインコール続出の打ち合いの末、予選では首位だった渡邉航明が4位に後退。代わりに2位の安里秀策選手が首位に、3位の遠藤 誠が2位に順位を上げ、畑 秀明選手・山下周作・土方 捷選手・水谷孝敏らが圏外から決勝ダブルエリミネーター進出枠に次々と飛び込んで来ます。

そして師匠の坂田重徳とまったくの同ピン、ゲームローハイもわずかに2ピン差という鍔迫り合いを制して日置秀一が最後の一枠を奪取しました。

8名による決勝ダブルエリミネーターは、敗北すると敗者ゾーンに移って敗者復活戦を戦い、2度敗北した時点で敗退が確定。勝者ゾーンと敗者ゾーンでそれぞれ勝ち上がった選手が優勝決定戦で対戦します。そして勝者ゾーンの選手が敗北した場合は再優勝決定戦が行われ、そこで勝敗が決定します。

つまり敗者ゾーンから勝ち上がった選手は2ゲーム連続で勝利しなければ優勝できず、対する勝者ゾーンの選手は1度負けても次で勝てばいいということ。

そんな負けても次は必ず勝つという強いメンタルが必要となるダブルエリミネーターで、日置・山下・遠藤とシード権を持つトッププロ達を次々と撃破し、無敗を守り抜いたのはアマチュアの安里選手でした。

勝者ゾーンで待つ安里選手への挑戦権を手に入れる為、まずは敗者ゾーンを勝ち上がった畑選手と遠藤による3位決定戦が始まりました。

弱冠15歳、今月に16歳の誕生日を迎える畑選手は、近年増えてきた両手投げの選手。もし畑選手が優勝すれば2年前に森本健太が20歳で打ち建てたJPBA史上最年少優勝記録を塗り替える上、国内初の両手投げ優勝という快挙になるところでしたが、初の大舞台に緊張を押さえられなかったか前半にスプリットからのオープンフレームを2つ出してしまいます。

TVファイナルに残ったただ一人のプロとして、アマチュア選手同士による優勝決定戦だけは阻止したいと対戦に臨んだ遠藤ですが、前半は自分らしいボウリングをすることができず、3フレーム目で3・4・6・7・9・10番を残す難しいスプリットを見事カバーするも、続く4フレーム目でシングルピンをカバーできないイージーミス。両者とも苦しい状況となりましたが、一足先に抜け出せたのは遠藤でした。

過去に所属していた稲沢グランドボウルでともにボウリングを楽しんだお客様から声援をもらい、遠く離れても覚えていてくれる、応援してくれるのだと思うとすっと冷静になれたという遠藤。5フレーム目から4連続ストライクに成功し、9フレーム目もスペアで繋ぎます。畑選手も一歩遅れて7フレーム目からストライクを繋ぎますが、先に投げる遠藤がパンチアウトしたところで畑選手がオールウェーを決めても3ピン届かない状況となり、敗退が確定します。

中学生の時に参加したNHK杯で当時ナショナルチームだった遠藤と会い、その時抱いた憧れがナショナルチームを目指すきっかけとなったと語ってくれた安里選手。浅からぬ因縁の相手と、奇しくも10数年後に決勝の舞台で再会することになった二人ですが、遠藤にとって安里選手は3回戦で一度敗れた相手。同じ相手、ましてアマチュアに二度は負けられないとプロの意地を見せ、滑り出しから5連続ストライクを決めて序盤のリードを取りました。

しかし安里選手もアマチュアとは言えユース時代を含めてナショナルチームに9年間籍を置く、日本屈指のボウラー。国内外で華々しい戦績を残し、その実力はプロに劣るものではありません。

出遅れたものの3フレーム目からしっかり立て直してストライクを連発。6フレーム目で遠藤のストライクが途切れたところで遠藤と並び、7フレーム目で逆転してしまいます。

遠藤は8フレーム目でストライクが来たものの、大事な9フレーム目で無情のテンピンタップ。最後は意地のパンチアウトを決めましたが、248ピンで終了となり、安里選手のミスを待つしかない展開に。

世界を舞台に戦い続けて来た安里選手がそんな弱みを見せる筈もなく、3フレーム目から10フレーム1投目までストライク8連続ストライクに成功。最終投球を待たずして優勝を決めました。

観客席で見守る恋人へ笑顔を向け、優勝インタビューでも名前を呼んで勝利を捧げた安里選手。大会史上5人目のアマチュア優勝を果たし、次は世界選手権大会でも金色のメダルを獲得されることでしょう。

そして惜しくも敗北してしまった遠藤も、全日本プロボウリング選手権大会での連覇、そして来年のジャパンオープンでリベンジを果たしてくれることにどうぞご期待ください！

Rhino Page Wins 2017 U.S. Open for First Major Title

Rhino Page of Orlando, Florida, captured his first career major championship after defeating top seed Jakob Butturff of Tempe, Arizona, in the title match of the 2017 U.S. Open, 256-222. 

Page struck on eight of his first nine deliveries during the championship round Wednesday at Flamingo Bowl, winning his sixth career PBA Tour title, the coveted green jacket and $30,000 top prize. The stepladder finals of the 2017 U.S. Open were broadcast live on CBS Sports Network. 

“I don’t know if I can put it into words,” said Page, a 34-year-old left-hander. “As I looked down as I was holding the trophy, I almost started to cry. It means everything to me and makes me want to work even harder to win more.” 

Page and Butturff matched each other shot for shot for the first five frames of the title match, but Butturff was unable to strike in the sixth and seventh frames, leaving and converting a pair of single pins. 
Butturff, a 23-year-old left-hander, opened in the eighth frame after leaving the 4-6-10 split as Page continued to strike through the ninth frame. Page sealed the victory with an eight count on his first shot of the 10th frame. 

A ball change in his semifinal win against 2013 U.S. Open champion Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, gave Page the look he needed heading into the title match against Butturff, who averaged more than 223 throughout the week at Flamingo Bowl. Page defeated Malott, 226-155. 

“I was going back and forth with two balls that were counter opposites,” Page said. “One was a little faster off the friction, and the other was a little slower. It became evident in the fifth frame that maybe the ball I was using was just a little too slow, and I knew I had to find a way to strike with Jakob coming up. I was really happy with my ball reaction when I made the change, and that alone let me know I had everything in place. If something happened with ball motion, I knew where to go next, and that made me extremely confident.” 

Butturff led the field after 56 games by 617 pins, including bonus pins, and he found a similar fate as several others who have held sizable leads heading into the title match. He earned $15,000 for the runner-up finish. 

United States Bowling Congress and PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony led the 1979 and 1980 U.S. Open by 578 and 551 pins, respectively, only to finish as the runner-up, while two-time U.S. Open champion Walter Ray Williams Jr. led the 1993 event by 537 pins before falling in the title match. 

“This was by far one of the best journeys I’ve had in my career,” said Butturff, a Team USA member who now will head to Hermosillo, Mexico, to represent the United States at the QubicaAMF World Cup.

“Second place at the end of the day is always the roughest, especially when you are leading a tournament by two games. At the same time, I put my foot down and I struck as much as I could this week. I bowled an OK game on TV, and Rhino just bowled a better game.” 

Malott earned his spot in the semifinal after picking up a 2-10 split in the 10th frame to lock up his match against Canada’s Graham Fach, 186-179. 

In Wednesday’s opening match, Fach rolled seven consecutive strikes on his way to a 259-222 win against USBC and PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Florida. Duke was in search of his 39th national title and third U.S. Open title, winning the green jacket in 2008 and 2011. 

All competitors at the 2017 U.S. Open bowled 24 games of qualifying over three days to determine the 36 players advancing to the cashers’ round. After eight additional games, the field was cut to the top 24 players for round-robin match play. 

The five finalists for the stepladder finals were determined by total pinfall, including bonus pins, for 56 games.
