Indiana’s EJ Tackett Overcomes Slow Start to Win PBA Bear Open For Third Career Title

EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., threw critical back-to-back strikes in the 10th frame to overcome back-to-back open frames early in the title match to defeat Sweden’s Jesper Svensson, 212-199, and win the PBA Bear Open, the second event of the PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The tournament finals aired Wednesday on CBS Sports Network.

Tackett, the 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year, prevented the 21-year-old Swedish left-handed two-hander from winning his fourth title of the year, instead claiming his third career PBA Tour title. In winning his second title of the year, Tackett joined Svensson and Texas teenager Anthony Simonsen, a two-time title winner, as the only three players to win more than once on the PBA Tour in 2016.

Tackett, who qualified second for the stepladder final, recovered in the match after leaving a 4-6 split in the second frame and 7-10 split in the third frame. Svensson held a four-pin lead in the ninth frame with both bowlers working on a strike.

“I didn’t panic but it was do or die at that point,” Tackett said after the two splits. “I had to do something so I went with a small adjustment with my hand position and fortunately it worked.”

When Svensson bowled a nine count on his first shot in the 10th frame, Tackett extended his string of strikes with a double in the 10th to take take the win.

“I knew sitting there I had a good chance because after the fourth frame I made the adjustment I needed to make to get to the pocket,” Tackett said. “It was just a matter of did I have enough time to catch him.

“I’ve been in that position before where you needed a strike to win the match, and those always seem to be more satisfying when you win that way,” he continued.

It was Tackett’s first win on national television. He won his previous titles in the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open earlier this season and the 2015 Lubbock Sports Open. Both events were streamed live on PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame.

Svensson, a leading contender for PBA Player of the Year honors after winning the PBA Rookie of the Year in 2015, is the first player to win five PBA Tour titles by age 21. Earlier in the year, he became the youngest player ever to win the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions followed by wins in the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Munich, Germany and the WBT Thailand in Bangkok. He won his first two titles in 2015.

The stepladder final began with No. 4 qualifier John Szczerbinski of N. Tonawanda, N.Y., defeating No. 5 qualifier and one-time Tour winner Jon Van Hees of Charlestown, R.I., 207-183. In match two, Szczerbinski defeated two-time Tour winner Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., 232-184, to advance to the semifinal match against Tackett. Tackett then ended Szczerbinski’s bid for his first title in the semifinal match, 193-183.

Fall Swing telecasts on CBSSN continue with the Badger Open on Oct. 5, followed by the Detroit Open on Oct. 12 and the King of the Swing special event on Oct. 19. All shows air at 9 p.m. ET. With his victory, Tackett joined Wolf Open titlist Tom Daugherty as the first two players to earn berths in the King of the Swing telecast, which will feature the four PBA Fall Swing title winners plus the player who finishes highest in overall points without winning a title.

愛甲恵子、6年ぶりの16勝目＆大会V2を果たす！

熊本地震の影響から、約5ヶ月順延しての開催となった今年の宮崎プロアマオープン。宮崎をはじめ九州のプロボウリングファンの皆様には大変お待たせしてしまいましたが、今年もたくさんの観客の皆様に足を運んで頂き、場内は連日大変な盛り上がりとなりました。

選手達も一年半ぶりとなった宮崎で、声援に応えてハイレベルなパフォーマンスを見せたいところでしたが、タフなレーンコンディションに苦戦してスコアはあまり伸びません。

それでも堀内 綾、佐藤まさみを筆頭に、実力派たちが粘り腰でレーンに取り組み、32名の実力派が予選を突破。続いて実力に加えて組合せの運が物を言う準決勝ブロックラウンドロビンでは、寺下智香や山田 幸、堂元美佐、大石奈緒、吉川朋絵、そしてディフェンディングチャンピオンの名和 秋らタイトルホルダーが脱落する波乱の展開となりました。

有力な優勝候補が脱落したとは言え、松永裕美や吉田真由美ら優勝候補筆頭組は健在、さらに川口富美恵や板倉奈智美、近藤文美、愛甲恵子らの実力は折り紙付きのベテラン達が決勝トーナメントへ進出し、最終ステージである1対1のガチンコ勝負へと突入します。

思うようにスコアを伸ばせない中、一人安定したスコアで中野麻理子と川口を下した愛甲、MKチャリティカップでは惜しくも初優勝を逃した鈴木亜季と”小さな巨人”吉田を倒した佐藤が準決勝Aゾーンで対決。

ここで愛甲は2フレーム目をオープンとしながらも、中盤のダブル以降はストライクが決まらなかった佐藤の自滅もあってスリーマーク差で勝利します。

続く準決勝Bゾーンでは、レーンに捕まってしまった浦 麻紗実と松下聖子を大差で下した松永と、近藤、堀内ら強敵を倒した板倉の組合せに。

2つのダブルを決めた板倉が、中盤6フレームまでストライクが一つしかなかった松永に対してリードを撮りましたが、松永が女王の意地を見せて7フレーム目からのオールウェーに成功。一気に逆転して松永が板倉を撃破。愛甲の待つ優勝決定戦へと駒を進めます。

西OPをブラインドし、戦線復帰してからも低迷が続いていた愛甲。宮崎を前に練習量を増やし、また長縄多禧子を手本にして柔らかいリリースに取り組んだと言い、先輩の立場ながら今をときめく松永に胸を借りるつもりで対戦に臨んだと語ります。

滑り出しは両者ともスペアからスタート。4フレーム目からストライク合戦に突入しますが、松永はターキーでストップ。対する愛甲は松永が途切れてからもさらにストライクを重ね、9フレーム目までの6連続ストライクに成功します。

さらに松永は8フレーム目で10番ピンを残し、これがカバー出来ず痛恨のイージーミス。すぐさま立て直して勝負どころの9フレーム目、10フレーム1投目とダブルを決めましたが、そのままオールウェーに成功しても221ピンとなり、愛甲が10フレーム1投目を9本スコアとした時点で勝敗が確定しました。

柔らかいリリースをと自分の投球に集中し、スコアもまったく見ていなかったという愛甲は、10フレーム1投目を投げて振り返った時、盟友の川口や進　博美が歓声をあげる姿を見てはじめて自分の勝利に気がつきます。

表彰式にて、「振り返れば2011年の東日本大震災の後、一番にトーナメントが開催されたこの宮崎で、声をあげてチャリティに奔走したのは愛甲だった。熊本地震があったこの年に優勝したのは、天からのご褒美かもしれません」と語ったのは運営委員会会長の藤元良一氏。

愛甲にとっては区切りの15勝から6年、新たな挑戦の一歩となる16勝目は、大きな打撃を受けた九州にとっても大きな意味のある勝利となりました！

9月19日（月祝）に柿田川パークレーンズ（静岡）で開催されました、承認大会・N&Kプロアマオープンボウリングトーナメントにて、北岡義実が優勝しましたのでご報告致します。

静岡地区を中心に、県内外から強豪プロアマが集い、予選6G、準々決勝3Gを投げてシュートアウトが行われ、近藤文美らを破った北岡がトップシードで待つ須田 毅と対戦。ベテランの強みを見せて北岡が1位通過の須田を下しました。

Tom Daugherty Ends Four-Year Title Drought, Wins PBA Wolf Open

With four matches ahead of him to win the PBA Wolf Open title in Wednesday’s CBS Sports Network stepladder telecast, Tom Daugherty’s strategy was to use a ball that would limit the chances for mistakes and give him the best chance to succeed on the 32-foot Wolf Open lane condition to kick off the five-event PBA Fall Swing television series.

Using a less-aggressive urethane ball throughout the finals, the No. 4 qualifier ended a four-year drought since his first PBA Tour win by defeating top qualifier Francois Lavoie, 212-192, in the title match at Thunderbowl Lanes.

In a match that was basically even through six frames, Lavoie, a 24-year-old rookie, ran into trouble in the seventh frame when he failed to convert a 2-4-8 spare. Despite the mistake, the native Canadian still had a chance to win by striking on the first ball in the 10th, but he left the 2-8-10 split.

Making a change to a urethane ball to reduce over-reaction was part of an equipment overhaul Daugherty made earlier this season.

“I’ve always felt my execution was fine but that it was time to go in a different direction with the equipment I was using,” Daugherty said.

“As far as bowling on the shorter lane conditioning pattern and potentially bowling four matches, going with the urethane works best for me because it gives me better control,” he added. “I thought if I could win the first match, I would get more confident. I could deal with the (lane condition) transitions by just keeping the ball swing down and make the adjustments with my release.”

The Riverview, Fla., player started his climb up the stepladder finals with a 198-183 win over 2016 USBC Masters winner Anthony Simonsen of Princeton, Texas,  before beating 2007-08 Player of the Year and 18-time Tour winner Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, in match two, 193-169.

The win over Barnes set up the semifinal against three-time reigning PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte where Daugherty fired a barrage of strikes to easily defeat the Australian two-hander, 255-225. Belmonte was trying for his 13th career title and first title of the 2016 season.

“I’ve wanted that second title for a long time,” said Daugherty, whose first win came in the 2012 PBA Scorpion Championship. “It seems more real when you win more than one (title). I didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder.”

Lavoie’s runner-up finish was his best of the season. The former Wichita State University collegiate star topped his third-place in the PBA Downums Waste Services Jonesboro Xtra Frame Open.

Fall Swing telecasts on CBSSN continue with the Bear Open on Sept. 28; Badger Open on Oct. 5, Detroit Open on Oct. 12 and the King of the Swing special event on Oct. 19. All shows air at 9 p.m. ET.

優勝　姫路　麗！

さる8月27日（土）・28（日）の2日間にわたり、トドロキボウル（奈良）にて開催されました承認大会・第4回 NARA OPEN トドロキカップを、姫路 麗が制しました！

男女トッププロが参加した今大会は、パーフェクトが4つ達成されるなどハイレベルな戦いが繰り広げられました。

予選6Gを投げて各シフト上位16名が進出した決勝トーナメントでは、吉田文啓・和田秀和・森本健太らを下した姫路と、藤田麻衣・川添奨太を下した堂元美佐が優勝決定戦で対戦。ゲーム後半はストライク合戦となりましたが、オープンフレームが響いて堂元がスコアを伸ばせず、姫路に軍配が上がりました。

山田 幸、地元関西で2勝目を挙げる！

若手によるしのぎの削り合いを見せてくれた男子に、負けず劣らずの熱い戦いを繰り広げた女子選手たち。

姫路 麗、松永裕美、吉田真由美ら三女王が準決勝で敗退するという波乱の展開をくぐり抜け、昨年の全日本女子選手権でルーキーイヤーに鮮烈な初優勝を飾った山田 幸を筆頭に、予選9位から飛び込んできた名和 秋、男女通じて唯一の2年連続決勝進出となった鈴木亜季、そして丹羽由香梨、久保田彩花、山田弥佳、佐藤まさみ、寺下智香ら男子と同じく若手が出揃いました。

比較的順位の変動が小さかった準決勝と打って変わり、決勝ラウンドロビンではなんと半数が1位に立ったと思えば7位まで落ちるという、近年まれに見る大混戦へ。そんな中、6G終了時点で6位にあった丹羽が、7G目に盟友・名和との対戦で白星を挙げ、一挙1位へ浮上。ポジションマッチでも2位につけていた山田　幸に279ピンのビッグゲームで勝利し、トップシードを守って決勝ステップラダーへ進出を決めました。

丹羽に黒星をつけられた山田も順位を守って後に続き、追い上げて来た名和を9ポイント差でかわした鈴木が進出枠を守り抜きました。

昨年の大会では決勝ステップラダーへ2位進出するも、3位に終わった鈴木にとってはリベンジと初優勝を賭けた3位決定戦は、勝ちたいという強い気持ちが逆にプレッシャーとなったか、ストライクを繋げることが出来ず、2度のオープンフレームで自滅。手堅くノーミスを守った山田に届かないまま、リベンジはお預けとなってしまいました。

ステップラダー進出3名の中で一番年下の山田ですが、初優勝後には若さやルーキーイヤーの勢いに乗ったまぐれだったのではと言われ、「早く2勝目を挙げて本物の証明をしたかった」と語ったように、強いハートを持つ一流プロの一人。初優勝を賭けて戦う先輩・丹羽に気持ちで後れを取ることなく、滑り出しから6連続ストライクを決めました。

「5フレーム目でパーフェクトを意識」するも、7フレーム目で10番ピンが飛ばず、場内から思わず声があがります。それでも山田は心折れることなく、これをカバーしてさらにダブルに成功。「投球の悪いクセが出て、それを修正するのに必死だった」という丹羽を突き放し、70ピン以上の大差で勝利します。

花束贈呈に「師匠から手渡されたい」と、男子の福丸と同じく和田秀和を指名し、最後は花が咲いたような笑顔で和田から花束を受け取った山田。

初優勝より難しいと言われる2勝目を、初優勝から9ヶ月、それも地元関西の大声援を背負いながら掴み、誰もが認める”本物の強さの証”を手に入れました！

福丸哲平、プロ入り8年目に掴んだ初優勝！

毎年9月上旬に行われ、スポーツの秋到来を告げるMKチャリティカップ。

今年も男女共催で行われ、夏休みを終えた選手達の気迫に満ちた会場はまるで夏に逆戻りしたかのような熱気に包まれました。

川添奨太、山本 勲や酒井武雄らの優勝候補や、ディフェンディングチャンピオンのジョン・テハが準決勝敗退という番狂わせが起きる一方、予選10位通過の越後　裕哉を筆頭に村上拓也、田坂大輔、藤井信人、福丸哲平、日置秀一、髙橋俊彦、山下陽平ら、プロ入り10年前後の若武者が気炎を上げ、決勝ラウンドロビンへと進出を果たします。

しかしここでまた一波乱。首位を走っていた越後が勝ち星に恵まれず3位に転落。2位・3位通過の村上と田坂もスコアを伸ばしきれずに順位を下げて行きます。

その隙を突いて浮上したのが、準決勝でパーフェクトと800シリーズを達成し波に乗る髙橋と、こつこつとポイントを積み重ねてきた5位進出の福丸でした。

ポジションマッチで越後に大勝した福丸がトップシードで決勝ステップラダーへ進出。髙橋も日置に白星を奪われたものの2位で通過、最後の一席は越後が日置を7ポイントの僅差でかわして守り抜きました。

MKチャリティカップは男女ともレギュラーツアー初優勝者が不思議と多い大会ですが、今年はそれを強調するかのように決勝進出の福丸、髙橋、越後の3名全員が優勝未経験。

誰が勝っても初優勝という新鮮な顔ぶれで始まった決勝ステップラダーは、越後と髙橋の3位決定戦からスタートしました。

滑り出しは越後がダブルを決めて髙橋にリードを取りますが、3フレーム目をスプリットからオープンにしてしまい、ほぼ互角の状態で中盤戦に突入。しかし越後がまたしても左レーンで捕まってしまい、再びスプリットを出したところで中盤から5連続ストライクを決めて髙橋が一気に逆転。髙橋の背中を越後が追う展開となり、8フレーム目からオールウェーを決めるもわずか7ピン差で髙橋の逃げ切りを許してしまいました。

トップシードで待つ福丸と越後は同じプロ入り8年目の同期生、日頃も行動を共にする親しい間柄だっただけに、「同期で優勝決定戦を戦いたかった」という気持ちが強かった福丸。

ましてルーキーイヤーの新人・髙橋に、8年先輩としては負けられない気持ちも強かったことでしょう。

その気負いに縛られてしまったか、福丸の1フレーム目はスペアを取ったものの、2フレーム目は1・2・4・10番を残すワッシャー。初ラウンドロビン、初TVファイナル、何よりあと1勝で初優勝とあって、強い緊張から思うような投球ができません。

しかし髙橋もまたビッグ4から滑り出し、2フレーム目はストライクとしましたが3フレーム目は再びスプリット。急激に変化したレーンに捕まってしまいます。

対する福丸はまだ緊張が抜けきらないながらも3フレーム目からダブルを決め、これで少し気が楽になったか、6フレーム目からはほどよく力も抜け、自分の投球を取り戻してストライクを重ねます。

後半またしてもストライクが繋がらなくなった髙橋も必死に追いますが、勝負どころの9フレーム目で思った通りにボールが曲がらず、シングルピンをミス。

6フレーム目からオールウェーに成功した福丸が、独走状態のまま初優勝を掴み取りました。

笑顔でフィニッシュを迎えた福丸でしたが、越後と同じく同期の和田秀和が男泣きで祝福の花束贈呈に進み出ると、つられてこちらも男泣き。同期の友たちに見守られながらの嬉しい嬉しい初優勝となりました！

Australia’s Jason Belmonte Tops PBA Detroit Open Qualifying, Earns Three Shots at PBA Fall Swing Titles

Australia’s Jason Belmonte, trying to energize his bid for an unprecedented fourth consecutive PBA Player of the Year title, qualified No. 1 for the PBA Detroit Open finals at historic Thunderbowl Lanes Thursday to cap a four-event qualifying series with his third chance to win his first 2016 title.

Belmonte, who failed to qualify among the top 12 in the Bear Open on Tuesday, had a solid six-game round on the flat 41-foot Bear pattern Thursday afternoon to take the lead and he maintained his pace throughout the Badger qualifying round Thursday night to lock up his 10th television appearance in the four-year history of the PBA Fall/Summer Swing. The 33-year-old two-handed star qualified earlier in the week for the PBA Wolf and Badger Open finals.

Belmonte finished the 36-game Detroit Open qualifying phase, bowled in three 12-game blocks on the PBA’s Wolf, Bear and Badger oiling patterns, with a 229.9 average for an 8,277 pinfall total. Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., qualified second with 8,100 pins followed by Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, at 8,078; E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., at 7,953 and Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., with 7,927 pins.

Daugherty, who entered the day in 14th place, completed his charge to the stepladder finals with a 268 final game to win a battle with Brad Angelo of Lockport, N.Y.; Rhino Page of Orlando, Fla., and Canada’s Francois Lavoie for the final berth in the stepladder finals.

“It’s always fun when more pins fall for you than anyone else,” Belmonte said. “I always set a very high standard for myself and the beginning of this year was good, but I’m here to win. That’s the goal I set, and when you’re not at your best, that’s the frustrating part. So for the past few months, I’ve worked very hard to lose a few kilos, become extremely focused on my spare game and it’s paying off.

“I don’t want to be second, ever, so I’m going to work harder than anyone else to get to the top again.”

With his high-revolution game, Belmonte has historically struggled on the shorter lane oiling patterns, including the 32-foot Wolf pattern, the shortest application of oil in PBA Tour competition. So when he qualified for the CBS Sports Network finals in the Wolf Open on Monday, he had a good feeling.

“I was happy with my short oil game. I wanted to make good shots on it, and that’s exactly what I did,” the 12-time PBA Tour title winner said. “I decided to be very aggressive and if I threw the ball in the gutter, it fell in, and it didn’t bother me. That helped my confidence.

“I always feel if I have enough games, I can make it to the TV show,” he added. “The more games I have, the better the chance I have to catch the leaders. Or, in this case, to stay in front.”

The CBS Sports Network stepladder finals of the PBA Wolf Open will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. for airing on Sept. 21; the Bear Open finals will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. for airing on Sept. 28; the Badger Open finals will be contested at 5:15 p.m. for airing on Oct. 5; the Detroit Open finals will be bowled at noon Sunday for airing on Oct. 12, and the King of the Swing – featuring the four previous title winners plus the leading player in Fall Swing points without a title – will be held at 3:30 p.m. for airing on Oct. 19. PBA Media Advisory: Australia’s Jason Belmonte Takes Lead into Final Round of PBA Detroit Open Qualifying

Australia’s Jason Belmonte, trying to energize his bid for an unprecedented fourth consecutive PBA Player of the Year title, moved into first place head into Thursday evening’s final qualifying round in the PBA Detroit Open at historic Thunderbowl Lanes.

Belmonte, who failed to qualify among the top 12 in the Bear Open on Tuesday, had a solid six-game round on the flat 41-foot pattern Thursday afternoon to take the lead away from Canada’s Francois Lavoie. The top five after Thursday morning’s round on the short Wolf pattern remained in the top five after the Bear round, but in a slightly different order heading into Thursday evening’s final qualifying round on the long 52-foot Badger pattern.

Heading into the final round, Belmonte – who is trying for his first title in 2016 – had a 110-pin lead over Wes Malott. Sean Rash was 17 pins behind Malott. Lavoie had slipped to fourth, 37 pins behind Rash, and lefty Anthony Pepe was fifth, 30 pins behind Pepe and 51 pins ahead of E.J. Tackett, who advanced from 10th to sixth.

Lavoie, a 24-year-old rookie, is already assured of making his first two PBA Tour television finals in the PBA Fall Swing’s Wolf and Badger Opens. He is trying for his first PBA Tour title. Belmonte also has advance to the stepladder finals in the same two events.

The Detroit Open stepladder finals will be contested at noon ET Sunday at Thunderbowl for broadcast on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 9 p.m. ET.

Texan Wes Malott Tops PBA Badger Open Finalists, Canada’s Lavoie Paces Top 18 Detroit Open Qualifiers

Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, outlasted Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., to earn the top qualifying berth for the Professional Bowlers Association Badger Open stepladder finals Wednesday night at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Malott, a 39-year-old 10-time PBA Tour champion, went head-to-head with Rash for the lead over the final six games, winning the duel with a 226 final game to Rash’s 162. Malott finished the Badger qualifying round with a 2,854 pinfall total and a 36-pin lead over Rash.

“The last six games, Sean was bowling well, and I was just kinda staying on the show,” Malott said. “But when (Rash) got into trouble, I kinda kicked it into gear and was able to take over.”

In leading the Badger field, Malott qualified for his first PBA Summer/Fall Swing television appearance.

“As far as these (Wolf, Bear and Badger) patterns are concerned, this is only the second time I’ve bowled on them,” Malott said. “I didn’t have any success at all in Oklahoma (last year’s tournament host), but I’ve had some success at Thunderbowl in the past, so it kinda shows some centers favor certain styles, and everything came together for me here. I hope it continues during the TV show.”

Also qualifying for the CBS Sports Network telecast were Canadians Graham Fach of Guelph, Ontario, and Quebec City native Francois Lavoie, who now lives in Wichita, Kan. Australia’s Jason Belmonte claimed the fifth spot in the finals when Denmark’s Thomas Larsen missed a spare in the 10th frame.

Fach, who won the Barbasol PBA Players Championship for his first title earlier in the year, and Lavoie, the top qualifier in the Wolf Open on Monday, are the leading candidates for PBA Rookie of the Year honors. Belmonte is trying for a record fourth consecutive PBA Player of the Year award, but the Australian two-handed star has yet to win a title in 2016.

The Badger Open is the third and final animal pattern event, all three of which played roles in determining the finalists for the PBA Detroit Open, which is the fourth PBA Tour title event included in the PBA Fall Swing. The Badger Open finals will be contested Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in Thunderbowl Lanes’ historic arena bay, and will air on CBS Sports Network on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 9 p.m. ET.

The PBA Fall Swing (formerly called the Summer Swing) is one of the PBA Tour’s most challenging events, requiring players to perform at a high level on three distinctly different lane conditioning patterns (the short 32-foot Wolf pattern, flat 40-foot Bear pattern and the long 52-foot Badger pattern). Overall performances on all three lane conditions determined the Detroit Open finalists.

Earlier Wednesday, Lavoie led the field of 18 players who advanced to Thursday’s final rounds of the Detroit Open. Based on combined pinfall totals in the Wolf, Bear and Badger preliminary rounds, the top 18 advance another 18 games – six each on the three different patterns – to determine the five Detroit Open stepladder finalists. Thursday’s Wolf, Bear and Badger rounds begin at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Also at stake during the Fall Swing will be 10 invitations to compete in the 2017 DHC PBA Japan Invitational. The invitations, based on total prize money earned during the Fall Swing, will be announced on Oct. 20.

Wes Malott Takes Early PBA Badger Open Lead, Francois Lavoie Paces Top 18 Detroit Open Qualifiers

Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, averaged 244 to take the early qualifying lead in the PBA Badger Open, the third and final animal pattern tournament in the PBA Fall Swing, at Thunderbowl Lanes Wednesday.

Malott, 39, fired games of 251, 248, 215, 248, 286 and 236 on the long 52-foot Badger lane condition to finish the opening round with 1,464 pins, 12 ahead of Wolf Open qualifying leader Francois Lavoie of Canada and 15 pins ahead of Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.

After bowling six games in the main section of the 54-lane suburban Detroit center, the top 12 moved into the historic Thunderbowl arena bay for their second six-game qualifying round at 7:30 p.m. ET. Round two will decide the top five players for the stepladder finals of the Badger Open, which will be contested Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in the arena bay. The CBS Sports Network telecast is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 9 p.m. ET.

Also advancing to the Badger Open second round were 2016 Barbasol PBA Players Championship winner Graham Fach, Canada; Anthony Colosimo, Davie, Fla.; Australia’s Jason Belmonte; Rhino Page, Orlando, Fla.; Andres Gomez, Colombia; Thomas Larsen, Denmark; Joe Paluszek, Bensalem, Pa.; Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., and Martin Larsen, Sweden, 1,327.

The 18 qualifiers will bowl another six games on each of the Wolf, Bear and Badger patterns Thursday with 36-game combined pinfall totals determining the Detroit Open stepladder finalists.

The top five in Detroit Open qualifying after 18 games were Lavoie with 4,197 pins; Malott (4,136); Rash (4,094); Belmonte (4,059) and Page (4,054).

Sweden’s Jesper Svensson to Bid for Fourth Title of 2016 Season as Top Qualifier in PBA Bear Open

Sweden’s Jesper Svensson, already the only player in Professional Bowlers Association history to win five titles by the age of 21, will try to make it six in the PBA Bear Open Saturday at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Svensson, a two-handed player who bowls from the left side, was top qualifier in the Bear Open Tuesday with a 12-game total of 2,706 pins, overtaking E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., in the final game to earn the top run in the Bear Open stepladder finals.

The Bear Open is the second of four PBA Tour title events that are part of the PBA Fall Swing. The Bear Open finals will be contested Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Thunderbowl Lanes’ historic arena bay, and will air on CBS Sports Network on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 9 p.m. ET.

Svensson, a leading contender for PBA Player of the Year honors after winning the PBA Rookie of the Year title in 2015, is trying to become the PBA’s first four-time winner of 2016. He knows he’s leading the race, but he doesn’t want to think about it quite this early.

“To be honest, I’m trying to not think about it much,” Svensson said. “I’ll just try to bowl as good as I can. It’s nice to be in the lead, but I just hope I can stay there for the rest of the season.”

Svensson said bowling six games on the demanding Bear oiling pattern in the main section of Thunderbowl and another six in the historic arena bay “was hard, but it was hard for everyone. It was close at the end and I’m glad I could finish it up.

“I think I had a pretty good look in the arena,” he added. “I hope I can find the same kind of ball reaction during the TV show” which will be contested in the arena.

Also qualifying for the Bear Open finals were Tackett with 2,668 pins; Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., with a 2,660 total; John Szczerbinski, N. Tonawanda, N.Y., 2,622, and Jon Van Hees, Charlestown, R.I., 2,597.

After six qualifying games each on the short 32-foot Wolf lane oiling pattern and the flat, 40-foot U.S. Open-style Bear pattern, left-hander Anthony Pepe of Elmhurst, N.Y., held the qualifying lead for the Detroit Open qualifying rounds which will be held Thursday in Thunderbowl’s arena bay. The field of 18 Detroit Open qualifiers will be decided after Wednesday’s six qualifying games on the long, 52-foot Badger Open pattern.

The Detroit Open stepladder finals field will be determined Thursday by combining the pinfall totals for the first 18 qualifying games with scores from three additional six-game rounds on the Wolf, Bear and Badger patterns. Those rounds are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Also at stake as the PBA Fall Swing progresses will be berths in the King of the Swing special event that will conclude the Fall Swing. The King of the Swing will include the winners of each of the three animal pattern events and the Detroit Open plus the highest-ranking player in competition points for the Fall Swing who doesn’t win a title.

Indiana’s Tackett Takes Early PBA Bear Open Lead

E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., rolled a 290 in his fifth qualifying game Tuesday afternoon to take the early qualifying lead in the PBA Bear Open, the second of our PBA Tour titles events in the PBA Fall Swing, at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Tackett, the 24-year-old 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year, rolled games of 184, 246, 234, 258, 290 and 234 for a six-game total of 1,446 pins (a 241 average) and a 35-pin lead over Jon Van Hees of Charlestown, R.I. Tackett, a two-time PBA Tour titlist, is trying for his third title and second of the year.

After bowling their first six games on the flat 40-foot Bear pattern in the main section of the 54-lane center, the top 12 moved into the historic Thunderbowl arena bay for their second six-game qualifying round at 7:30 p.m. ET. Canadian Native Francois Lavoie Earns Top Berth in PBA Wolf Open as PBA Fall Swing Gets Underway

Canadian native Francois Lavoie, now living in Wichita, Kan., earned the top berth for the stepladder finals of the PBA Wolf Open Monday as the Professional Bowlers Association Fall Swing got underway at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Lavoie, who starred with the Wichita State University bowling program, averaged 239.83 for his 12 qualifying games to claim the lead with a total of 2,878 pins, 76 ahead Australia’s two-handed star Jason Belmonte. The 24-year-old rookie, bowling in only his fourth PBA Tour event, will make his national television debut on CBS Sports Network on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m.

“It should be exciting. I’m looking forward to it,” Lavoie said. “I’m just drinking up all the experiences.”

After ranking third in the first eight games bowled earlier Monday in the main section of Thunderbowl Lanes, Lavoie dominated competition Monday night when the second six-game round was bowled in Thunderbowl’s historic arena bay, built in 1961 as a showcase for premier bowling competition.

“I think the surface on the lanes in the bay was a little different, so it played different than the main center,” Lavoie said, “but it was still fairly understandable if you were able to do the right thing with ball motion. And I was able to do that pretty well.”

Lavoie, who grew up in Quebec City, is living in Wichita on a temporary visa, but plans to apply for a athlete visa to stay here full-time.

“As long as I want to be a competitive bowler, I think I need to be in the U.S. and Wichita is pretty centrally located to a lot of competitive bowling. Plus it’s a great city,” he said.

Belmonte, the three-time reigning PBA Player of the Year, is trying for his 13th PBA Tour title, but first of the 2016 season. He qualified for his eight career PBA Summer/Fall Swing television final, one shy of Bill O’Neill’s record in the fourth annual multi-event program.

Eighteen-time PBA Tour champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, fired a 300 game earlier Monday to take the early lead but slipped to third place in the evening session. Barnes, 46, is seeking his first title on U.S. soil since winning the 2013 PBA Viper Open in Las Vegas. Barnes’ most recent titles were won in Qatar (2014) and Japan (2015).

Tom Daugherty of Riverview, Fla., qualified fourth and 19-year-old Texas two-hander Anthony Simonsen, a leading contender in the 2016 PBA Player of the Year race, slipped past Kris Prather of Milton, Fla., by six pins in the final game to clinch the fifth stepladder berth.

The Wolf Open stepladder finals will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. for telecast on CBS Sports Network on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m. ET.

Eighteen-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, fired a 300 game and averaged 244.67 Monday to take the early qualifying lead in the PBA Wolf Open as the PBA Fall Swing got underway at Thunderbowl Lanes.

Barnes, seeking his first title on U.S. soil since winning the 2013 PBA Viper Open in Las Vegas, rolled games of 255, 300, 206, 247, 244 and 214 to lead the field of 12 top qualifiers who advanced to the second six-game round of Wolf Open qualifying later Monday. Since 2013, Barnes has won titles in Qatar (2014) and Japan (2015).

New Hui Fen Wins 2016 Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship

Singapore’s New Hui Fen captured the 2016 Smithfield Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour Championship at Uptown Alley on Sunday.

New defeated her Team Singapore teammate Cherie Tan in the championship match, 258-235, to win her first PWBA title, which also was a major. The championship round was broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.

The exciting all-Singapore final was the highest-scoring match of the day as New started with five consecutive strikes, before a 4 pin in the sixth frame derailed her chance at perfection.

After tossing one strike during the first four frames, Tan closed the gap with strikes in frames five through nine, which forced New to strike or spare in the last frame to win the final event, and fourth major of the 2016 PWBA season. New left a 10 pin on the first shot of her 10th frame and converted the spare to claim the victory and the $20,000 prize.

“I think this win will impact many other players like how Joseph Schooling has impacted all of Singapore with his win in swimming at the Olympics,” New said. “What he said was really true, ‘even people from the smallest country can do great things.’ So, I believe our neighboring countries will look at us and say ‘wow, if they can do it, so can we.’”

The PWBA Tour experienced an influx of international talent this season with Team Singapore playing a big role in the second year of the re-launched Tour.

New capped off a season that included third-place finishes at the Nationwide PWBA Sonoma County Open and PWBA Storm Sacramento Open, and a fourth place finish at the U.S. Women’s Open.

In the process, New became the fourth player from Singapore over the last two seasons to win a PWBA event or major championship.

Jazreel Tan won the 2015 PWBA Lubbock Sports Open, Bernice Lim won the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Queens and Cherie Tan captured the 2016 PWBA Storm Sacramento Open.

Despite competing in just six events this season, New earned enough competition points to secure another coveted title – 2016 PWBA Rookie of the Year.

The 24-year-old right-hander entered the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship needing to defeat fellow rookie Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, in the opening round of match play and Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, in Round 2, to secure enough points to win the award.

New is the first international rookie of the year since Australia’s Cara Honeychurch in 2000.

New earned her spot in Sunday’s championship match by defeating two-time PWBA champion Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio, 213-189. Tan knocked off Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, 199-195, in the first semifinal.

Despite the loss, Johnson, a USBC Hall of Famer, claimed her second consecutive PWBA Player of the Year award. The race for the postseason honor came down to Johnson and Restrepo, with Restrepo needing to win the Tour Championship to claim the award.

With Restrepo’s loss in the second semifinal, Johnson became the first player since Wendy Macpherson in 2000 to win the award in consecutive years.

This year, Johnson led the Tour in points, earnings and tied for the lead in championship-round appearances. She also won two events this season, the PWBA Las Vegas Open and her fifth career U.S. Women’s Open title.

“It was another incredible year,” Johnson said. “I’m very excited, very fortunate and very happy I had the year I did. It’s such a strong field of amazing young ladies, who are just going to get better. It makes you step up your game, and I have to stay strong mentally and physically. I’m very proud, and I’m very happy.”

PWBA members qualified for the Tour Championship by either winning a title during the 2016 season or earning enough competition points. All 2016 PWBA Tour champions (who were PWBA members at the time of their victory) received an automatic invitation to the Tour Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled out through the PWBA points list.

Finalists Set for 2016 Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship

Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio, and Singapore’s New Hui Fen and Cherie Tan, advanced to the championship finals of the 2016 Smithfield Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour Championship on Saturday.

The live televised finals will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern

In the first semifinal, Johnson will face Tan, while New will square off against Restrepo, with the winners battling for the final major title of the season and the $20,000 top prize.

Johnson and Restrepo earned automatic slots onto the live televised finals as the top two players on the PWBA points list. New and Tan had to win three matches over the course of Friday and Saturday’s competition to advance to the finals.

Johnson, the reigning PWBA Player of the Year, kicked off the season with a win at the PWBA Las Vegas Open, and most recently claimed her fifth career U.S. Women’s Open title. If Johnson wins the PWBA Tour Championship, she will capture her second major of the season and back-to-back player of the year awards.

Restrepo is in the midst of a career year, capturing the Greater Detroit Open and St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open this season. Her most recent win catapulted her into the second spot on the PWBA points list and into the Player of the Year conversation. If Restrepo wins the Tour Championship, she will win the honor.

New, the No. 11 seed, will make her fourth championship-round appearance in just six events including the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open. She earned enough competition points in her five previous events to earn a spot in the Tour Championship, and put herself in contention for PWBA Rookie of the Year.

After defeating fellow rookie of the year contender Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, on Friday 3-2, New had to win her second match to garner enough competition points to surpass Higgins. During Round 2 on Saturday, New defeated Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, 3-1, to claim the honor, then defeated Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, to earn a spot on the TV show.

“It’s great,” said New, who competes for Team Singapore. “It’s really surprising. But, I was working toward making the TV show because if you think about it that way it’s easier to win the Rookie of the Year. If I came here with the mindset thinking that I just have to win two matches and I’m done, then I’m really done. If I aim for the moon, I’ll land on the stars.”

Tan, the No. 16 seed, rolled the maximum amount of games during match play as all three of her matches went the full five games. Tan earned her spot in the Tour Championship after winning the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open earlier in the season, and like her Team Singapore teammate, she didn’t waste her opportunity.

Tan started competition on Friday by defeating Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas, 3-2, then knocked off Bryanna Cote of Red Rock, Arizona, 3-2, before defeating Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, 3-2.

“It’s an honor to come here and bowl with the top 16 women,” Tan said. “The field is great, it’s strong and I’m really honored to be part of the Tour Championship. It’s definitely great to be able to represent your country because not everyone can do that. To be able to represent Singapore for the last 10 years is an honor.”

Ten Players Remain in Contention at 2016 Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship

Bryanna Coté of Red Rock, Arizona, earned her spot in the 2016 Smithfield Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour Championship by beating Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, in the title match of one of the final events of the season.

On Friday, Coté advanced to the second round of the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship, taking place at Uptown Alley, by once again dispatching her Team USA teammate in thrilling fashion.

Coté was one of six players to advance to the second round at the season’s final major Friday. The opening round consisted of best-of-five, single-elimination matches.

Coté fell behind early in the match, dropping the first two games against Kulick, but quickly responded with two consecutive wins to even the match. In the deciding game, neither player could pull away. In the end, it was Coté who threw the first strike in the final frame to seal the Game 5 victory, 236-215. Cote will face left-hander Cherie Tan of Singapore on Saturday at 9 a.m. Eastern.

“I wasn’t throwing it very well the first couple of games,” said Coté, who recently won the PWBA Lexington Open to earn a spot in the Tour Championship. “I wasn’t really comfortable where I was on the lane, so I actually decided to go farther right where I’m more comfortable playing. My husband, Randy, and I decided to go there, and it worked out. Both Kelly and I had struggles with carry and getting the ball to read. The right lane was really tight. I finished on that lane, which I wasn’t looking forward to, but I just told myself to execute the best I could. I know Kelly was fishing during the fourth game to find something, and she did, so it really could’ve gone either way.”

The bracket-style event continues Saturday with six more single-elimination matches, after which the four finalists will be set for Sunday’s championship round.

The semifinals and title match of the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Saturday’s second-round matchups include: Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, vs. Amanda Greene of Romney, West Virginia; Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, against 2015 PWBA Rookie of the Year Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, and defending champion Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, taking on Singapore’s New Hui Fen.

The event’s 16 players qualified for the Tour Championship by either winning a title during the 2016 season or earning enough competition points to earn a spot in the bracket.

All 2016 PWBA Tour champions (who were members at the time of their victory) received an automatic invitation to the Tour Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled out through the PWBA points list.

The top two players on the season point list, reigning PWBA Player of the Year Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, and Colombia native Rocio Restrepo, now from Louisville, Ohio, automatically were seeded into the semifinals, while McEwan and Pluhowsky received first-round byes for the Tour Championships as the third and fourth players on the points list.

The remaining 12 invitees battled in the first round of matches Friday.
