Shannon O’Keefe, Bill O’Neill Successfully Defend Storm PBA/PWBA Xtra Frame Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles Title
Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Ill. and Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., withstood a challenge from Jason Belmonte of Australia and Diandra Asbaty of Chicago, in the position round match to successfully defend their Storm PBA/PWBA Xtra Frame Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles title Sunday at Bowl on Bellaire. O’Keefe, a 12-time Team USA member, earned her fourth PWBA Tour title while O’Neill earned his eighth PBA Tour title and first of the season. In the position round match, Belmonte, the three-time defending Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year, and Asbaty, a 15-time Team USA member and the winner of the 2012 USBC Queens, defeated O’Keefe/O’Neill 459-415 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 116-pin deficit. O’Keefe/O’Neill won with an 8,902 pinfall total, including bonus pins, to Belmonte/Asbaty’s second-place 8,860 pinfall. It was O’Keefe’s third win with O’Neill as a partner having also won in 2013. O’Keefe also won the event with husband Brian in 2012. “It was going to be tough to beat Diandra that game so I just shifted my focus to keep up with her,” O’Keefe said of the position round match. “I was able to put together some good frames at the end of the game so she wouldn’t get too far ahead of me. “Communication is always important when you’re bowling doubles,” O’Keefe added. “But the ability to bounce ideas off your teammate and change your game plan quickly, if necessary, is also important in a tournament like this.” O’Neill struggled in the final match but like O’Keefe bowled well enough to keep the team out front. “I couldn’t get a strike but fortunately I didn’t have any splits and I made my spares,” O’Neill said. “We had a pretty big lead heading into the last match and we were able to keep them from getting too far ahead of us.” O’Neill also credited the ability to communicate and the knowledge of each other’s games for their success as doubles partners. “We know each other’s games so well both physically and mentally,” O’Neill added. “We’ve kind of gone back and forth over the years where she bowled really well and I was kind of along for the ride and this year I was having a better tournament, but the point is we’re good at being able to work through the grind that makes this tournament what it is.” Proceeds from the tournament and accompanying pro-am raise funds are donated to The Rose, a Houston-based organization that helps women who can’t afford breast care treatment or mammograms, and the Huntsman Group. Belmonte and Asbaty are Top Qualifiers in Storm PBA/PWBA Xtra Frame Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles
Three-time defending Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte of Australia and amateur/professional standout Diandra Asbaty of Chicago, combined to average 221.6 to lead 152 doubles teams after qualifying Saturday in the Storm PBA/PWBA Xtra Frame Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles at Bowl on Bellaire. Belmonte and Asbaty had a 3,547 16-game pinfall total to top 38 teams that advanced to Sunday morning’s cashers’ round that will determine the top eight teams for the final match play round Sunday afternoon. Belmonte bowled a 1,985 pinfall with games of 255, 247, 261, 221, 215, 228, 279 and 279. Asbaty bowled 1,562 with games of 180, 178, 198, 180, 189, 192, 232, 213. “It was one of those days where every move I made was the right one,” said Belmonte, who recently won his third best bowler ESPY. “I made some blind moves that just happened to work but could have just easily not have worked.” With a best finish of fourth in the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions this season, the two-hander with 12 career PBA Tour titles, is looking forward to the potential of winning his first title of the year. “I’m going to keep my fingers crossed,” said Belmonte. “I’ve been bowling well lately but really Diandra and I are just hoping we finish strong regardless of where we end up.” Asbaty, the winner of the 2012 USBC Queens and two PBA Women’s series titles, won the 2002 event with partner Dino Castillo and is trying for her first PWBA title. “I’m just really in awe of bowling with Jason,” Asbaty said. “He has unbelievable power and it’s really an honor to be able to bowl with him. “Fortunately, I bowled well at the end of the block but hopefully I’ll be able to contribute more tomorrow,” the 15-time Team USA member added. Despite being good friends and having shared experiences bowling internationally together it’s the first time the pair have bowled together in topflight competition. “Diandra asked me if our schedules ever enabled us to bowl this tournament would I like to bowl with her?” Belmonte said. “I said absolutely and so far we’re making the best of it. “Anytime you bowl with friends it provides a great environment where you can help each other out. Pete Weber Wins Record Sixth Title of 2016 in PBA50 South Shore Open, Ties Walter Ray with 99th PBA Title
The Pete Weber Show rolled through Hammond, Ind., Thursday night, adding another record performance to an unprecedented season in the PBA50 South Shore Open presented by DV8 at Olympia Lanes. Weber, with a 241-203 victory over top qualifier Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., won a record sixth PBA50 Tour title in a single season and improved his all-time PBA titles total to 99, tying Walter Ray Williams Jr. in their race to become the first bowler in PBA history to win a combined total of 100 PBA Tour, PBA Regional, PBA50 Tour and PBA50 Regional titles. Weber, who now has 10 PBA50 Tour titles, also has won 37 PBA Tour titles, a PBA-record 48 Regional titles and four PBA50 Regional titles. “Walter’s beat me in everything else,” Weber said, “so if he gets to 100 first, oh, well.” In continuing his dominant season, winning two more titles than any previous PBA50 player in a single year, Weber said, “I don’t even know what to say about it. My dad (bowling legend Dick Weber) always said it takes breaks to win, and he’d rather be lucky than good. But when you’re good and you’re lucky, it’s pretty amazing. “And as much fun as I’ve had this year, I honestly expect someone is going to come along and break my record. There are so many good bowlers coming along, this record won’t last.” Weber, after qualifying third, defeated Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., 238-224, to advance to the title match. In that match, Weber left a solid 9 pin in the sixth frame, which caused a couple of fans in the crowd to laugh at the bad break. “That might have been funny to them, but it wasn’t to me,” Weber said. “It kinda peed me off, and everyone out here knows you don’t pee-off Pete Weber. That only makes me bowl better.” He responded with four strikes to overtake and beat Goebel. In the title match, the worst break struck Boresch when he left a light-pocked 7-10 split in the fifth frame to stop a string of two strikes. Weber responded with five strikes in a row before suffering his own pocket 7-10, but by then he had a lead Boresch couldn’t overcome. In the second match, Goebel started with six strikes before leaving a 4 pin. His 55-pin lead in the fifth frame was too much for Gregg Zicha of Glen Ellyn, Ill., to overcome. In the first match, Zicha took advantage of PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli’s struggles on the left lane to eliminate the Venezuelan native, 183-170. Monacelli had three open frames and only two strikes through the first nine frames while Zicha limited his errors to one missed split conversion. The tour’s next stop is the PBA50 Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic presented by Roto Grip in Anderson, Ind., beginning Sunday and concluding on Wednesday, Aug. 3. 桑藤美樹、涙の新人戦制覇！
レギュラーツアー、B公認などトーナメントの形はそれぞれですが、選手にとって優勝の重みに違いはありません。まして出場資格がプロ入りから5年と限られる新人戦は、その後の長いプロ人生の為にも是非とも獲っておきたい貴重なタイトル。 それだけに、今年がプロ入り5年目の45期生にとってはまさに最後のチャンス。さらに”本物の証”の2勝目、所属センターが会場となるホステスプロと、「どうしても勝ちたい理由」が三拍子揃っていたのが、桑藤 美樹でした。 2年前の六甲クイーンズで初優勝を挙げた桑藤ですが、昨年は故障に泣き、近々では六甲・東海と予選落ちが続いており、好調とは言えない状況が続いていました。 この不調を何とか立て直して今大会を迎え、ゲーム毎に見れば何度かトップを奪われたものの、最終的には予選・準決勝ともトップを奪取。1位通過で決勝トーナメント進出を果たします。 その後に2年連続TVファイナル進出の久保田彩花、今季デビューの49期生の中からただ一人の決勝進出となった大嶋 有香、本間由佳梨・内藤真裕実・櫻井 麻美ら新人戦ファイナルの常連組とプロ入り3年目で初進出の秋光 楓、そして桑藤と同期でラストチャンスの大石 奈緒ら8名が続きます。 プロデビューからともに切磋琢磨してきた同期生、どうせなら最後の年に優勝決定戦で会いたいと考えた桑藤ですが、願いは空しく決勝トーナメント1回戦で桑藤VS大石の顔合わせに。 いくらともに励まし合ってきた同期生でも、最後の年に是が非でも欲しいタイトルを譲るわけには行かず、246対245というなんと1ピン差の熱い戦いの末に、桑藤が大石を下します。 勝ち上がった桑藤を待っていたのは、日頃よく一緒に練習しあう仲だという内藤。戦いづらい朋友を対戦相手に、自分のボウリングに集中して桑藤が勝利。 昨年の大会では内藤を下した大根谷 愛が優勝したことから、「私（内藤）に勝った相手は優勝するというジンクスがある」と内藤自身にハッパをかけられて、桑藤は優勝決定戦へと駒を進めました。 喉から手が出るほど欲しい2勝目、そして新人戦タイトルを前に、立ち塞がったのは大嶋。1回戦のVS秋光、2回戦のVS久保田を250ピンオーバーのビッグゲームで倒したルーキーですが、プロとして4年先輩の桑藤が負けるわけには行きません。 それも同期、朋友を倒してきたとあっては、ここで負けては友らに向ける顔がないと言うもの。様々なプレッシャーを背負いながら臨んだ優勝決定戦は、桑藤、大嶋ともにスペアで滑り出しました。 大嶋の投球を目に入れず、自分のボウリングに没頭する桑藤は続く2フレーム目から6連続ストライクに成功。対する大嶋は2フレーム目はストライクを決めたものの、3フレーム目で4・6・7・8・10ピンを残すビッグファイブ。中盤もストライクを重ねることができません。 終盤の7フレーム目からようやく立て直した大嶋ですが、時すでに遅く、9フレーム目に桑藤がストライクを決めた時点で勝敗が確定。それでも最後の意地でパンチアウトを決め、今後の成長を予感させました。 もはや勝敗が確定し、ウィニング投球となった桑藤は、「優勝が決まったことで気持ちが楽になって、それまでで一番素晴らしい投球が出来た」と語りましたがスプリット。最後の最後はご愛嬌でしたが、所属センターのスタッフや応援してくれるお客様の前で念願の2勝目を挙げた桑藤。初優勝の六甲ではタイミングがわからず、控え室に戻ってから歓喜の号泣をあげましたが、今度はみんなの見守るなか、レーンの上で喜びの涙を流しました！ またアマチュアの部では弱冠18歳の大久保咲桜 選手とベストアマ常連の強豪・松本 君代 選手が優勝決定戦で対決。両者199ピンで同点となり、勝敗はワンショットプレーオフに持ち込まれます。 松本選手は9本カウントに。そして大久保選手がストライクを決め、大久保選手の優勝が決まりました。

Duke Defeats Weber in PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship for Second PBA50 Major Title
When Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Norm Duke looks for motivation, he finds it in the milestone PBA50 Tour season that longtime rival and fellow hall member Pete Weber is having this year. Duke had extra motivation in the title match of the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm Saturday beating Weber 234-215 in the title match at Island Xtreme Bowl for his second PBA50 major and third title of his career on the tour for players 50 years of age and older. “Any of us are capable of getting on a serious roll but the one Pete is on is something else,” said Duke of Weber’s season that includes a record five PBA50 Tour wins with a record run of four in a row. “I had to look at it as not only stopping the roll he’s on but starting my own.” In the title match, Duke, who was the top seed for the finals and Weber, who qualified third, were tied in the eighth frame but Weber failed to strike in the ninth frame leaving the 3-6-10 spare which he converted. It was then that Duke saw his opportunity and struck in the ninth and the first ball in the 10th to seal the win. “I was kind of shocked that he left that (spare) at that point but I saw it as an opportunity,” said Duke, who ranks third on the all-time PBA Tour titles list with 38 wins which includes seven majors. “I thought to myself let’s get this done.” Duke ended Weber’s consecutive major titles string this season at two after Weber, the defending PBA50 Player of the Year, won the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global and USBC Senior Masters in June. The win was Duke’s first since winning his first major, the Senior U.S. Open, in his rookie season in 2014. “I’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” Duke added. “I want to catch up to Pete, Walter (Ray Williams Jr.) and the other guys but I’m still a work in progress and have a long way to go.” In the opening stepladder match, Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp., Mich., the winner of the 2009 Senior World Championship, beat PBA50 Tour rookie Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, 201-193, to advance to the second match where he lost to Weber 234-186. Weber then beat PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III in the semifinal match 264-214 to advance to the championship match against Duke. Bohn, who was trying for his fourth PBA50 Tour title, won the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open last season which was conducted as a standard PBA50 Tour tournament. Weber, who ranks fourth on the PBA Tour list with 37 wins including a record-tying 10 majors, was trying for his fifth PBA50 major and 10th title overall. In the eight PBA50 Tour tournaments he has competed in this season, Weber has two seconds and a fourth-place finish along with his five wins. Williams, Bohn and Kretzer Win PBA50 Regionals Heading into PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship Final Day
PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm match play finalists Walter Ray Williams Jr., Parker Bohn III and Brian Kretzer each won PBA50 regional titles Friday at Island Xtreme Bowl. Williams won the 99th tournament of his PBA career by defeating two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Las Vegas, 268-258, in the title match of the Treasure Island Resort & Casino Viper Championship, one of three regional events conducted as a prelude to Saturday’s final day of the World Championship. “I never expected anything like this when my career started,” Williams said about approaching the 100 title mark. “I still enjoy competition as much as I ever have and I’ll keep doing it as long as I enjoy it.” The Hall of Famer will have some work to do as he enters the match play portion of the World Championship in 23rd position and will have two six-game match play rounds to try and advance to the stepladder finals. If he can win the World Championship it would mark his 100th PBA title. He holds the all-time lead in career PBA Tour titles with 47, 10 PBA50 Tour titles, 32 PBA regional and 10 PBA50 regional titles with his win Friday.
PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III hopes to ride the momentum of his win in the Scorpion Championship as he defeated Paul McCordic of Sugar Land, Texas, 213-191, in the title match for his second PBA50 regional title. Bohn, who won last year’s Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open which was conducted as a standard PBA50 Tour event, enters World Championship match play in second with a 3,568 15-game pinfall total 17 pins behind tournament leader Ron Nelson Jr. of Bridgeview, Ill., who leads with 3,585. Nelson finished third in the Scorpion Championship and fourth in the Chameleon Championship Friday. “Winning this Scorpion Championship was a good test for what I’ll need to do tomorrow so I’m pretty encouraged and it puts me in a good mindset,” Bohn said. “I had to do a little bit of everything, especially adjust my angles to the pocket and I’m sure I’ll be doing a lot of that in (World Championship) match play.”
PBA50 Tour rookie Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio won the Chameleon Championship by defeating Australian senior standout Andrew Frawley in the title match 244-199. Kretzer, a one-time PBA Tour winner, won his second PBA50 regional title. Kretzer enters World Championship match play in fourth with a 3,519 pinfall. Hall of Famer Pete Weber, who was also trying to reach the 100 PBA tournament title milestone Friday fell short finishing fourth in both the Viper and Scorpion Championships and sits at 98 just one short of Williams. He will begin World Championship match play in third with a 3,566 pinfall. He will be trying for his third consecutive major and sixth win overall this season. His two major titles this year were the Suncoast Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global and the USBC Senior Masters both in June. World Championship match play begins at 10 a.m. ET (9 a.m. CT) Saturday with the first round which will be followed by the second round at 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT). Restrepo Grabs First PWBA Title at Greater Detroit Open
Rocio Restrepo admits her emotions can sometimes get the better of her when she’s on the lanes, but she allowed those strong emotions to drive her to the title of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Greater Detroit Open. Restrepo jumped to an early lead against Malaysia’s Li Jane Sin, striking in four of her first six frames, on her way to a 217-185 victory at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley. Restrepo, who edged Sin by 28 pins during match play to gain the No. 1 seed for the finals that were televised on CBS Sports Network on Tuesday, claimed her first PWBA title with the victory. “I’m an emotional person and sometimes that can be bad,” said Restrepo, a Colombia native. “But I felt like I was controlling myself and it actually kept me in the moment. I only have 12 shots to win a title and I have to make it count. I’m excited because I also want to bowl the PWBA Tour Championship.” With the victory, Restrepo did punch her ticket to the season-ending, 16-player field of the Smithfield PWBA Players Championship, which will take place Sept. 1-4 in Midlothian, Virginia. “I’ve been working really hard and I felt like it was time,” Restrepo said. “I’ve been looking forward to this year. I just missed at the (Go Bowling PWBA) Players Championship, missed a few spares and it cost me at the end – I really wanted to make that show. These opportunities don’t happen every day, so take them now or you might never see them again.” The Greater Detroit Open marked Restrepo’s fourth PWBA championship-round appearance and her second as the top seed. She lost to Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova in the title match of the 2015 PWBA Minnesota Open. “I remembered losing last year in Minnesota; I made good shots but they didn’t fall,” Restrepo said. “My coaches have been telling me ‘You got this, we believe in you’ but it’s hard to tell yourself that when you are failing and making the little mistakes that cost you. Today, I made two bad shots and I thought it might cost me at some point. But I kept making my spares and kept telling myself to stay in it. I’m excited it finally happened.” Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, the 2015 PWBA Rookie of the Year, made her second TV appearance of 2016 in the stepladder’s opening match. She started with strikes in five of her first six frames en route to a 222-181 victory over former Wichita State standout Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia. In the semifinal match, Johnson had an open frame in the sixth and that proved to be just enough of an opening for Sin, a 2016 USBC Queens finalist, to grab a 225-194 victory to set up the title match against Restrepo. The qualifying, match play and group stepladder rounds of the PWBA Greater Detroit Open took place June 17-18 at Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. The TV stepladder finals were taped for broadcast on June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, Wisconsin, after the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship. |

弱冠18歳の初々しい笑顔 男子と同じく盛りだくさんのレギュレーションでファンを喜ばせた女子大会。臼井晶香や酒井美佳ら東海地区お馴染みのプロや、小池沙紀と船山ビアンカのルーキー、先日の六甲クイーンズで最後まで戦い抜いた大石奈緒、西村美紀、佐藤美香など、バラエティに富んだ顔ぶれが健闘を見せてくれました。 しかし今大会の台風の目となったのは、なんとまだ10代のアマチュア選手2名。ともに東海地区のジュニアボウラーとして育ってきた17歳の早川知里選手、そして47期生の坂倉にいなを姉に持つ18歳の坂倉 凜選手でした。 HG・HS賞を獲得した二人は予選を難なくクリアして後は、準決勝、決勝グループラウンドロビンと並み居るプロを抑えて首位を独走。同じくラウンドロビンを勝ち抜けた近藤文美、グループ1位を除いたポイント1位の谷川章子、プロアマ2対2による決勝シュートアウトとなりました。 スタートダッシュはターキーを決めた谷川がひとつリードするも、中盤にストライクが決まりません。もう一人のプロ・近藤もターキーの後にオープンフレームを出したりと、大差を付けることは出来ませんでしたが、手堅くまとめて212ピンで終了。 8年ぶりのTV決勝で緊張したと語る谷川とは対照的に、あどけなさが残る10代の選手二人は緊張知らず。早川選手は2つのオープンフレームで撃沈してしまいましたが、坂倉選手はアジャストして8フレーム目からのオールウェーを決めて近藤と並びます。 残る谷川は勝負どころの9フレーム目でストライクが決まり、10フレーム1投目もストライクならば決勝の目が出るという展開で、「8年ぶりのTV決勝で思わず力が入った」と失投。これが泣くに泣けないスプリットでオープンとしてしまい、近藤VS坂倉選手による優勝決定戦となりました。 オープンからのスタートとなったものの、坂倉選手は素直にレーンと向き合い、4連続ストライクに成功。後半は左レーンでストライクが出ませんが、近藤を相手にワンマーク差を守ります。 東海地区での大会で、女子は3度もアマチュア優勝を許してしまった記憶はまだ新しく、近藤にはプロとしてアマチュアを阻止せねばならないプレッシャーがのしかかりますが、PBAにも挑戦しているベテランだけに、手堅くまとめて差を開かせません。 このまま10フレ勝負に持ち込まれるかと思われたところで、大事な9フレーム目に近藤が嫌われ続けていた10番ピンをとうとうミスしてしまい、オープンフレームに。しかし坂倉選手もまたスプリットからのオープンフレームにしてしまい、10フレーム1投目をストライクとしましたが、スコアを伸ばしきれず204ピンで終了します。 後を投げる近藤がパンチアウトなら逆転勝利という展開となりましたが、最後まで10番ピンに嫌われ、坂倉選手の背中を追い越すことは敵いませんでした。 昨年のジャパンオープンでの水谷若菜選手に続き、東海地区で育つジュニアの底力を見せつけて、坂倉選手が東海オープン史上初のアマチュア制覇を成し遂げました！
川添奨太、1年7ヶ月ぶりの復活V！
男女共催、2日間にわたる予選、ジュニア大会、シュートアウトにグループラウンドロビンと、見どころをこれでもかと詰め込んだ東海オープン。 7個のパーフェクトが打ち上げ花火のように彩り、まるで夏のお祭りのような盛り上がりを見せました。 しかし選手達にとっては一投一投が勝敗に繋がる真剣勝負。ビッグゲームが連発される反面、ローゲームも多い繊細なレーンを相手に、シビアな戦いとなりました。 相性や組合せの運も大きく物を言う準決勝、決勝グループラウンドロビンを乗り越えて出揃ったのは、パーフェクトを皮切りにぶっちぎりのスコアで勝ち抜けた川添奨太、今大会2個のパーフェクト達成を果たした安里秀策選手、髙橋俊彦との実技免除合格者対決を制した藤井信人、そして各グループ1位を除くポイントトップの山本 勲ら4名。 安里選手は現役の、他3名は元ナショナルチームの一員にして、全員プロ優勝経験を持つという、まさに日本トップクラスの戦いが実現しました。 ナショナルチーム在籍が被っていたり、同じ高校のOBと後輩だったりと、それぞれがライバルの実力を知り尽くしており、相手にとって不足無し。見る者にとっても投げる当人達にとっても、”ワクワクする”顔ぶれによるガチンコ勝負は、全員が当然のようにダブルで滑り出します。 山本が3フレーム目に失投してしまい、続く4フレーム目で川添と安里選手も10番ピンを残す9本カウント。ひとり藤井だけが5フレーム目までストライクを繋げて大きくリードし、そのまま独走状態で決勝進出の一席をもぎ取りました。 残る一席を賭けての戦いは、オープンからすぐに切り替えた山本が4連続ストライクで川添と安里選手を追い、混戦状態に。しかし安里選手が中盤からストライクが繋がらず一歩後退し、川添も9フレーム目に手痛いスプリットを出してしまい、山本に逆転を許します。 しかし今大会「自分自身への挑戦」をテーマとしていた川添は、10フレームでダブルを決め、パンチアウトならずも231ピンで終了。後に投げる山本は、川添を振り切るには10フレーム1投目でストライクが絶対必要となりましたが、失投したわけではなかったにも関わらず3・7・9番を残すスプリットとなってしまい、ここで敗退が確定しました。 2013年の藤井のプロ入りから、川添VS藤井による優勝決定戦は今回が4度目。1勝2敗で負け越している藤井にとっても、三冠王奪還に燃える川添にとっても負けられない頂上決戦は、川添がいつも選択する右レーンスタートを、藤井が選択してリズムを狂わせるという、心理戦からスタートします。 藤井がダブルで滑り出し、4フレーム目からストライクが決まらなくなる一方、ターキーで滑り出した川添が4フレーム目でスプリットを出してオープンに。しかし両者とも立て直し、後半は川添のワンマークリードによるバチバチのストライク合戦に突入。勝敗の行方は最終フレームに持ち込まれます。 先に投げる藤井はオールウェーを決めたいところでしたが、2投目は痛恨のスプリット。243ピンで終了となり、川添のミスを待たねばならない展開に。 三冠王の前に立ち塞がる最大のライバルを相手に、川添がここでミスして良いわけがありません。しかも今年はPBAをはじめ、ワールドワイドの戦いに身を投じ、自分自身に挑戦している川添。勝敗を分ける10フレーム1投目でミスしてしまったら、と感じる自分を奮い立たせた投球は、見事ストライク。さらに2投目もストライクを決めて駄目押しし、藤井に圧勝しました。 世界にはばたく為に川添にとって絶対必要とも言える三冠王、その栄光の奪還に向けて大きな足がかりとなる一勝となりました！

Boomershine Top Seed at PWBA PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open
Setting goals provides a player in any sport a special focus during a long season. For Lindsay Boomershine, the goal for the 2016 Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour season was simple – to not be 17th. Boomershine, of Perry, Utah, went 5-1 in match play at the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open on Saturday to earn the top seed for the televised stepladder finals. She will be joined on the TV show by Colombia’s Rocio Restrepo, who also won her match-play group to earn the second seed, along with Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey. “I’ve worked so hard for so long, and this is my first TV show – ever – so it’s pretty emotional for me right now,” Boomershine said. “I just kept telling myself to keep working on my game.” Boomershine and Johnson outdistanced the field in match play and squared off in the position round to determine who would be the top seed for the TV. The loser of the position-round match still would have a shot at the show, but would have to advance through the group stepladder at Seminole Lanes. The match was decided in the final frame. Needing a mark to win, Johnson left the 2-4-5-8, could not convert the spare, and gave Boomershine a 198-194 victory. With a 30-pin bonus for the win, Boomershine finished with a 5,552 pinfall total to edge Johnson by 12 pins. Earning the top seed also put Boomershine closer to a goal of reaching the PWBA Tour Championship. All event champions for the 2016 season earn a spot in the 16-player PWBA Tour Championship, with the remainder of the spots filled from the PWBA points list. Boomershine barely missed several cuts last season, when the cut line was the top 16, prompting her goal this year “to not be 17th.” “I want to make sure I guarantee my spot,” Boomershine said about making the PWBA Tour Championship. “When the points were posted a few days ago, and I was 19th, I knew I needed to make this week count. I thought, just make top 12 and go from there. Of course, it came down to the last frame because everything always is dramatic for me.” Johnson went on make the TV show this week, too. She just needed to win another match in the Group A stepladder. Diana Zavjalova of Latvia started the Group A stepladder by slipping past Josie Earnest of Nashville, Tennessee, 268-247, to earn the chance to meet Johnson. With a second shot to make the TV finals, Johnson claimed a 259-231 victory. The opening match in the Group B stepladder also provided drama. Maria Jose Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, had the chance to advance past Erin McCarthy of Omaha, Nebraska. Needing to double in the final frame, Rodriguez saw a good shot result in a 7-10 split. In the group final, Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, rolled to a 278-184 victory over McCarthy. Saturday’s competition in the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open kicked off with a six-game block to narrow the field from 32 to the top 12 for round-robin match play. The 12 finalists were split into two groups of six for match play, which consisted of six games including a final position round. The competitor with the highest pinfall total in each group earned a spot in the TV finals, and the next three highest in each group advanced to the group stepladder. Rodriguez Leads at PWBA PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open
Making the cut at the end of the first day of competition means making a paycheck on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour. “It’s been hard because I’ve been making the cut, but I’ve been so far behind the top 12,” said Rodriguez, who has cashed in nine events this season, including a second-place finish at the PWBA Wichita Open. “I literally had no chance every time I made the top 32 because I was 32nd, 31st, 30th.” In sixth place after the first six-game block of qualifying Friday, Rodriguez averaged 241.8 over the final six games. Her 2,782 pinfall total leads Josie Earnest of Nashville, Tennessee, who finished the opening block with a 299 game (she left the 10 pin) and the second block with a 279 final game, by 15 pins. Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, already a two-time winner on the PWBA Tour in 2016, is third at 2,712. She is followed by Erin McCarthy of Omaha, Nebraska, (2,702) and Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas (2,645). McCarthy opened the day with a 256 game and averaged 246 during the first six games of qualifying to hold the lead. She fought through a lingering injury all day and had a noticeable limp by the end. She suffered the injury last week at the PWBA Rochester Open, and McCarthy, a registered nurse, said she’s “confident it’s a groin pull rather than a tear.” “It wasn’t bad until Game 3 or 4 of the second block,” McCarthy said. “It was uncomfortable in the morning but not painful like it was last week. It actually kept me slow, so I think that’s a good thing. I sometimes tend to rush my feet.” For match play, competitors will be split into two groups of six players, and at the end of match play, the top qualifier in each group will earn an automatic spot in the televised stepladder finals. The second, third and fourth qualifiers in each group will advance to a group stepladder final, with the winner of each group stepladder also advancing to the TV finals. All qualifying and match-play rounds of the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open are being broadcast on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the Professional Bowlers Association. 【PBA】 News Belmonte Wins Back-to-Back Best Bowler ESPY Awards
Jason Belmonte of Australia earned his second consecutive and third overall Best Bowler ESPY Award Wednesday evening during the 2016 ESPY Awards ceremonies at the Microsoft Theater. Belmonte, who won his first ESPY Award in 2011, was among winners in a variety of sports and special moment categories that were determined by fan voting. The winners were announced during ABC-TV’s live ESPY Awards telecast. In 2015, Belmonte became the first international player to win three consecutive Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year awards. The two-handed star also became the first player to win the USBC Masters in three consecutive years and he won his second consecutive Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions title, becoming the first player to win both the Masters and TOC in back-to-back seasons. "I'm absolutely thrilled to win the ESPY again this year,” Belmonte said. “This award means so much to me because it's voted by the people who I believe matter most in bowling, the fans. My fans are a huge motivation in my game. I want to always give them my absolute best because it's what they deserve. I’d like to thank everyone who voted, but more importantly, thanks to all the fans for loving the sport of bowling.” Also nominated in the Best Bowler category were PBA Player of the Year contender Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Swedish two-handed star Jesper Svensson and Texan Anthony Simonsen, also a two-handed player. Ciminelli won three titles in 2015 including the U.S. Open and finished third in the PBA World Championship. Early in 2016 he won the bowlingball.com Maine Shootout for his sixth career PBA Tour title. Svensson won two titles in 2015 on his way to earning PBA Rookie of the Year honors and in 2016 won the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions to become the tournament’s youngest champion at age 21. Simonsen became the youngest player ever to win a major when he won the 2016 USBC Masters at age 19. O'Keefe Captures Third Title at Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open
Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, wasted no time in the title match, defeating Colombia native Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas, 252-203, to win the Pepsi Professional Women's Bowling Association Lincoln Open, her third career PWBA title and second of the 2016 season. O'Keefe never trailed in the match, beginning with three consecutive strikes to set the tone. Guerrero began the match with a strike of her own, but followed with an open frame and two consecutive spares to trail by 32 pins after four frames. In the fifth frame, Guerrero made a ball change and immediately doubled to stay within striking distance. But following spares in the fourth and fifth frames, O'Keefe quickly climbed back on the strike train with five consecutive on the way to victory. "It's surreal," said O'Keefe, who led after the qualifying and match-play rounds at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. "I think I've led wire-to-wire potentially and lost in the finals of an event, but I've never come out with a win. I don't know, it's surreal. I don't even know how that happened." For O'Keefe, her success in 2016 might not be possible without her previous television experiences. Through repetition, the 37-year-old right-hander has learned how to control her emotions when competing on television. "The difference is the more you put yourself in the position, the more you get comfortable with those nervy feelings, the quicker I'm able to manage them." said O'Keefe, who is a 12-time Team USA member. "Before it wouldn't be until the fifth, sixth or seventh frame until I would settle down. Now, it's almost the first shot. I just make sure I stay behind the foul line, the ball gets off my hand and it goes away. So, I think that helps a lot." O'Keefe's previous shortcomings are nothing but a memory in the rear-view mirror as she continues to drive through a stellar 2016 PWBA Tour season. "You believe in your abilities because you know how hard you've worked," O'Keefe said. "You know the time you've put in, the sacrifices you've made, but to get so close and to have things always not end in your favor, to always be the bridesmaid and not the bride, you ask yourself, 'Do I actually have what it takes to be a Liz, to be a Kelly. Do I have that because I don't know?' So, to get that first one, and get the monkey off my back, this is just icing on the cake now. It's that first one that means the most." Guerrero, who won the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship earlier this season, earned her spot into the title match after defeating 2015 PWBA Player of the Year and United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Liz Johnson, 214-212. Johnson, the No. 3 seed, led the match until the seventh frame, where her only open gave the lead to Guerrero, who remained clean and tossed a three-bagger starting in the sixth frame to take a three-pin lead. Johnson doubled in frames eight and nine and stepped up in the 10th frame with a chance to win the match, but left a 2 pin on the first shot to allow Guerrero to advance. In the opening match, Johnson struck on five of her first six shots on the way to defeating No. 4 seed April Ellis of Jackson, Tennessee, 225-184 All qualifying and match-play rounds of the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open were held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 10-11. The stepladder finals were held June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in conjunction with the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship, and the finals of the PWBA Wichita Open and PWBA Greater Detroit Open. The Players Championship finals aired live on CBS Sports Network, while the Wichita Open aired July 5, and the Greater Detroit Open will air July 12 on CBS Sports Network.

本格的な夏の始まりを告げる六甲クイーンズオープンが、本日熱戦の幕を下ろしました。 ディフェンディングチャンピオン・松永裕美や小林あゆみ、桑藤美樹ら優勝経験者が予選落ちする一方、準決勝で猛チャージをかけた姫路 麗、平野志帆、浦 麻紗実らが圏外から決勝ラウンドロビン進出を果たすなど、混戦模様を呈した今大会、ファイナルステージには大石奈緒、川口富美恵、西村美紀、佐藤美香ら4名が出揃いました。 プロの世界では「1勝だけでは足りない。2勝してからが本物」と言われる、とはこれまでにも度々ご紹介してきたことですが、2勝目の壁は決して低くはありません。ルーキーイヤーの2012年初優勝の大石、2007年優勝の西村・2009年優勝の佐藤らにとっては、まさに越えられない壁だったと言えるでしょう。 特にこの六甲クイーンズで初優勝を挙げた佐藤にとっては、喉から手が出るほど欲しい勝利。しかし4位決定戦では練習ボールを終えていきなりレーンが変化してしまい、まさかの3連続オープンフレームという滑り出しに。 対戦相手・西村は佐藤と対照的にターキーでスタート。その後佐藤がアジャストして8フレーム目からオールウェーを決めましたが、西村の背中は遠く、六甲V2はお預けとなってしまいました。 勝ち上がった西村を待つのは、7勝の経験を持つ川口。その川口も2012年の千葉女子オープン以来優勝がなく、そろそろタイトルが欲しいのは同じこと。まして準決勝からラウンドロビン後半までトップを走っていただけに、川口としても期待するところはあったでしょう。 しかし3位決定戦、西村が2フレーム目から5連続ストライクを決める一方、4フレーム目で川口は「出してはいけないとわかっていたのに」ボールを外に出してしまいスプリットに。終盤に川口も5連続ストライクを決めましたが、これが勝負の分かれ目となりました。 4位決定戦から勝ち上がって来た西村、ラウンドロビンにて7勝1敗の成績でトップシードを掴んだ大石。2勝目がかかった2人を、さらに変化の進んだレーンが待ち受けていました。 同じレーンで先に2ゲームを投げ、268ピンのビッグゲームも打った西村にアドバンテージがあると思われますが、遅くなったレーンに捕まってしまったのは西村でした。 さらに優勝を意識して力が入り、後半はまったくストライクが決まらず、我慢を強いられる展開となった西村。バチバチの打ち合いとなれば難しいと見ていた大石は、西村の苦戦を見て緊張が解けて調子を取り戻し、3フレーム目から4連続ストライクに成功。差を一気に広げます。 最後まで立て直せなかった西村に対し、大石は終盤、丁寧にスペアを決めてまとめ上げ、4年ぶりの優勝を掴み取りました。 2年前に結婚した夫の菊池正義に支えられ、”本物の証”である2勝目を挙げた大石をはじめ、久しぶりのファイナル進出で奮起する西村、そして川口と佐藤。さらに三冠連覇を狙う姫路、寺下智香ら実力は折り紙付きの若手達。次はどのヒロインが活躍してくれるか、今季後半が楽しみとなる一戦となりました！

明日より本大会を迎える六甲クィーンズのアマチュア選抜大会を兼ねた承認大会、神戸プロアマフェスティバルにて、千田恵三選手が優勝致しました。 予選6Gを投げて決勝トーナメントへ進出した千田選手は一回戦で松永裕美を下して順調に勝ち上がり、優勝決定戦では予選1位で進出、小林あゆみを倒した前田晃伸選手と対戦。 268対237という好勝負の末、優勝を果たしました。 |

O'Keefe Earns Top Seed, Dorin-Ballard Shines at PWBA Rochester Open
Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, has been on a tear this season, and her torrid pace continued this week as she earned the top seed for the televised finals of the 2016 Professional Women's Bowling Association Rochester Open at AMF Gates Lanes. O'Keefe, who led qualifying on Friday, only won two matches during match play Saturday, but she'd built enough of a lead to hold off the field and earn the top spot for the stepladder finals, which will be taped Aug. 7 during the U.S. Women's Open and air Tuesday, Aug. 23, on CBS Sports Network. O'Keefe, originally from Oregon, was a Rochester resident for several years, along with her husband, Bryan, who is a native of the Flour City. She averaged more than 226 through 24 games in front of her friends and family and finished 56 pins ahead of left-hander Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, to lead Group A after six games of round-robin match play. Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas, who recently picked up her first PWBA title, topped the Group B standings to earn the No. 2 spot on the TV show. Team USA member Josie Earnest of Nashville, Tennessee, and United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, each won their respective group stepladders to earn the third and fourth seeds for the finals. This week's event brought about a different experience for O'Keefe, who had the chance to share her success with many familiar and supportive faces in a city she called home for nearly a decade. "It was home for eight and a half years, and some of my best friends still live here, so it still is home," O'Keefe said. "Once I knew I'd locked up the top seed, it was very emotional for me. It hit me out of nowhere. I picked up my ball to throw my fill shot, and I had to keep blinking because my eyes were so teared up. I had to take a couple deep breaths just so when I turned around, people didn't see I was crying. I guess it meant more to me to be able to come here and do it here with all of our friends and family than I was expecting it to. It was very cool." The PWBA Tour returned to Rochester this week for the first time since 1987, and the local bowling community was excited to have the best women in the world back in town. O'Keefe, who is a three-time Rochester Queens champion, recalls how warmly the local bowling community treated her upon arriving. "When I moved here, I was really young," said O'Keefe, who is a two-time PWBA champion. "Bryan grew up here, but I was jumping into a whole new bowling community. The people here embraced me as if they'd always known me and loved me from Day 1. I still keep in touch with several of them. It's just an awesome, very supportive bowling community. It's good to see after 28 years of the tour not being here, everyone still come out and support it the way they did back in the day." While O'Keefe now is the player to beat in the stepladder, she can't help but note the role Dorin-Ballard has served as a mentor and friend and what it would mean to face one of the sport's most decorated players for the title. "I think it will be an absolute honor to be able to bowl in a PWBA-televised event against somebody I grew up watching," O'Keefe said. "She's a legend. She's somebody I've dreamed about having a career like. She's become a dear friend of mine. So, to be able to have an opportunity to bowl her for the title would be a dream." Dorin-Ballard has been working hard to get back to a competitive level she's comfortable with. Although she might not be happy with the overall results so far, she's already made more match play appearances this season (five), than all of 2015. "Last year, I just didn't feel like I bowled well at all, and it was mediocre at best," Dorin-Ballard said. "I feel like this year has been mediocre for me, too, though. I've had some pretty good opportunities, and I haven't taken advantage. I've worked on my game every single week, and, actually, after not bowling last week, I went home, and our friend Paul Fleming and my husband came up with an idea. I went and changed my thumb pitch a little bit, so I'm using new Switch Grips with the new pitch. I've also worked with Del and Randy at Kegel very often this season, so it's a work in progress. I'm a work in progress." Dorin-Ballard won her last PWBA title at the Greater Cincinnati Open in 2003 before the Tour went on hiatus. She is appreciative of the career she's had and looks forward to building on her successes this season. "There's so much talent out here, and the game is so different," said Dorin-Ballard, who will turn 52 on July 29. "Do I think I can still compete? Absolutely, 100 percent, or I wouldn't be here, and I wouldn't work at it. But, it is tougher. I'm older. I hate to admit that, but I am. So, I want to try to take advantage of the moments I have. This right here is a goal met. The TV show is a totally different thing, and you know what, I'm in a different place now. I want to win, but if I don't, I've done some really great things, and I want to keep building on that." In the opening match of the Group A stepladder Saturday, Dorin-Ballard defeated Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, 259-172. In the finale, Dorin-Ballard knocked off Pluhowsky, 225-210. Pluhowsky stepped up in the 10th frame with an opportunity to shut out Dorin-Ballard but left a 7 pin on her first offering. Dorin-Ballard, a five-time Team USA member, then needed a strike and good count to clinch the victory. She struck out in the 10th frame to advance. Earnest defeated two-time PWBA champion Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, in the opening game of the Group B stepladder, 268-206. In the final match, Earnest defeated Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 245-238. Earnest jumped out to an early lead but found herself trailing by four pins in the sixth frame. In the final stanza, Earnest struck out to force Johnson to strike on the first shot of her final frame to win. Johnson left a 4 pin, allowing Earnest to advance. Earnest and Dorin-Ballard will kick off the TV finals, with the winner advancing to meet Guerrero, who won the recent Go Bowling PWBA Players Championships in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The winner of that match will take on O'Keefe for the title. Saturday's competition kicked off with a six-game block that narrowed the field from the 32 cashers to the top 12 players for round-robin match play. The 12 finalists were split into two groups of six for match play, which consisted of six games including a final position round. The competitor with the highest pinfall total in each group earned a spot in the TV finals, and the next three highest in each group advanced to the group stepladder. O'Keefe Leads Qualifying at 2016 PWBA Rochester Open
Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, is bowling with confidence this season, and that again was on display Friday at the 2016 Professional Women's Bowling Association Rochester Open. O'Keefe averaged 235 over 12 qualifying games for a 2,820 pinfall total at AMF Gates Lanes, edging Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas (2,794), for the lead. O'Keefe, who also led after the first six-game block Friday, averaged 242.5 during the evening block to stay ahead of the charging Guerrero. Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York (2,708), Bryanna Cote of Red Rock, Arizona, (2,683) and Kristina Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, New York (2,647), round out the top five. O'Keefe has been a different bowler this season and has said her time as head coach of the McKendree University women's bowling team has forced her to become confident in making, and committing to, on-lane moves or ball choices, because she expects her team members to do the same. But, what also has allowed O'Keefe to bowl confidently, is knowing she is a PWBA singles title holder, a distinction she earned after winning the Nationwide PWBA Sonoma County Open earlier this season. After also leading qualifying and match play at the recent Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open, O'Keefe will head into this week's cashers' round confident and experienced in leading tournaments. "Getting that first individual win under my belt helped," said O'Keefe, who is the top seed for the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open TV finals, scheduled to air July 12 at 11 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network. "I feel everything else is just gravy, I really do. Everything else is just bonus. We're so lucky we get to do this week in and week out, so keeping it in perspective is a lot of it, too. Tomorrow, I want to separate myself as much as possible from 13th place. And, if there is some separation between me and third, I'd like to make good shots and further separate myself from that position." Shannon Sellens of Copiague, New York, earned the final spot in Saturday's cashers' round with a 2,467 total, a 205.58 average. The PWBA Rochester Open continues Saturday with six additional games, with pinfall carrying over to determine the 12 players who will advance to round-robin match play. The match-play finalists will be split into two groups, each featuring six players. Each group will bowl six games, including a final position round. At the end of match play, the top qualifier in each group will earn an automatic spot in the stepladder finals, with seeding being determined by total pins. The second, third and fourth qualifiers in each group will advance to a group stepladder final. The winner of each group stepladder will advance to the televised stepladder finals. 7月3日（日）、承認大会・第38回関東オーディンプロアマオープントーナメントが新東京ダイヤモンドボウルにて開催され、時本美津子が優勝しましたのでご報告致します。 予選6G、準決勝2Gを投げてプロ上位3名、アマチュア11名が選出。計14名で決勝2Gを投げ、トータル10Gのスコアで競われ、時本が2位の稲橋和枝に25ピン差での優勝となりました。 またアマチュアの部では山田篤志選手が優勝。2位の岡野浩吉選手とともに、海外ツアーへご招待されました。

【PWBA】 PWBA Wichita Open 【Finals】 McEwan Captures Second Career Title at PWBA Wichita Open
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Fortunately, for Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, not only was she good, she also had a certain lucky charm in attendance to help her to victory at the 2016 Professional Women’s Bowling Association Wichita Open. McEwan, who earned the No. 1 seed for the TV finals on the strength of a 1,543 match-play pinfall total, struck in five of the first seven frames en route to defeating Maria Jose Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, 210-171, at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley for her second career PWBA title. Rodriguez was clean through four frames until she left a 4-6 split in the fifth, followed by a 7-10 split in the seventh frame, which stopped her momentum and left her trailing by 52 pins. A split in the eighth frame from McEwan could’ve made things interesting, but Rodriguez was unable to double in the ninth frame to put pressure on McEwan. “Being the No 1 seed is hard,” McEwan said. “You come out and have one game, and if its close or the other person shoots a big game, it almost feels like your hard work to get there is almost for nothing.” McEwan’s rise to the top seed was not an easy one. With three games to go during the cashers’ round June 4 at Wichita’s Northrock Lanes, she found herself in 27th place, still searching for a consistent look on the challenging 41-foot Sport-Bowling lane condition and well outside the upcoming cut to the top 12 for match play. In danger of missing her first match-play cut of the season, McEwan switched balls, made a slight adjustment and rolled games of 269, 237 and 247 for a 753 series, which allowed her to claim the 12th and final spot for match play. From there, McEwan took things to another level, posting an 823 set for the first three games of match play and 1,099 for the first four. “When I bowl, I try not to look at the scores too much for that reason,” said McEwan, who won the 2015 Smithfield Tour Championship for her first PWBA title. “I just try to stay within myself, and as far as I’m concerned there’s always hope I can figure it out. That’s really paid off for me this year. There have been a lot of times I’ve been able to shoot a big game and put myself back in position, where if I was really counting, I’d be putting more pressure on myself.” Rodriguez, the No. 2 seed, earned her spot in the final match by defeating Syaidatul Hamidi of Malaysia, 218-180. Rodriguez was clean in the win, while Hamidi had two opens and struggled with pin carry. In the opening match, Hamidi doubled in the 10th frame, on the strength of an eighth-frame ball change, to knock off No. 4 seed Shannon Pluhowsky, 190-180. Pluhowsky, who finished the match first, spared in the ninth frame and needed to double and get nine pins to shut out Hamidi. She began the 10th frame with an eight-count spare, followed by a strike, which allowed Hamidi the chance to win the match. While McEwan is more than capable of winning on her own, considering her overall skill level, fundamentals and knowledge of the game, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a good luck charm in the crowd when competing. McEwan’s mother, Susan Varano, was in attendance and now has witnessed McEwan’s first two PWBA titles in person. “It means the world to have her here,” said McEwan, whose 823 in match play was the first 800 series by any player since the re-launch of the PWBA Tour in 2015. “All the Team USA girls tease her and say she’s my good-luck charm. She always shows up at the right moments. Sometimes, it’s going badly and we put her in the corner, but it always turns around. She wasn’t there when I made the show at the Queens (2016), and I didn’t win, so I’m going to make sure she gets a plane ticket when I make a show from now on.” The moment was not lost on Varano, who may want to give McEwan a cardboard cutout of herself as an early birthday present, just in case she’s unable to make future TV finals. But for the PWBA Wichita Open finals, Varano had a front-row seat for her daughter’s second professional title and she’s had a lifetime first-class seat for McEwan’s growth from youth bowler to collegiate star to PWBA standout. “It’s just unbelievable pride,” Varano said. “I see how much she works at this. I see it day in and day out with what she eats, what she drinks and what she reads. She lives this. This is what she wants. After watching Kelly and Liz and Shannon and Stefanie and all of the best for all of these years, and to all of a sudden hear her name with them, it’s a great feeling.” All qualifying and match-play rounds of the PWBA Wichita Open were held at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, on June 3-4. The stepladder finals were held June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in conjunction with the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship and the finals of the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open and PWBA Greater Detroit Open. The Go Bowing PWBA Players Championship finals aired live on CBS Sports Network, while the Lincoln Open and Greater Detroit Open will air on CBS Sports Network on July 12 and July 19, respectively.

Kulick Perseveres to Earn Top Seed at PWBA Lexington Open
When Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, decides to hang up her bowling shoes and throw her last ball down the lane, she will look back on a successful career and be pleased with her performances. But, what she might look back on the most, is her performance down the stretch at the Professional Women's Bowling Association Lexington Open this weekend, while battling injury at Collins Bowling Center-Eastland. Kulick used a 5-1 match play record to claim the No. 1 seed for the event's stepladder finals, which will be taped Aug. 7 during the U.S. Women's Open and air Tuesday, Aug. 16, on CBS Sports Network. Kulick, who starred at Morehead State, about 63 miles from Lexington, struggled during the first six games of qualifying, averaging a little more than 182. Despite the early setback, the 39-year-old right-hander averaged 221 for the final 18 games, including a 225-206 position-round victory against Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, to clinch the top seed. "I graduated from Morehead State, which is an hour down the road," said Kulick, who helped Morehead State capture the women's title at the 1998 Intercollegiate Team Championships. "I didn't bowl well in Kentucky when I bowled the tour stop here, so I wanted to make a strong presence. I was slow out of the gates, but Churchill Downs must be my influence. Like Seabiscuit or Secretariat, I came back well down the stretch." Kulick has been battling an ankle injury for the last month and even missed the PWBA Greater Detroit Open to receive proper treatment. Although she continues to deal with pain during competition, there is no quit in the six-time major champion. "The ankle is not 100 percent, but I feel like I can still be competitive," Kulick said. "I'm going to go home and take the necessary medical precautions I need to get it back for a strong finish in the final two or three weeks. Player of the year was one of my ultimate goals, but I may have to put that on the backburner for a little while. But, I don't know how to quit. I wouldn't want to push myself beyond injury to cause further pain, but my mom taught me the one thing you don't do is quit. If you start something, you have to finish it. It's the only way I know." The state of Kentucky has provided many outstanding memories and lessons for Kulick, but perhaps, most importantly, she learned how to stand on her own two feet and begin the trek to hopefully becoming the best woman bowler ever. "I knew I wanted to go away for college and get out of New Jersey," Kulick said. "It wasn't because I disliked New Jersey, but I wanted to see what it would be like on my own and gain my independence, and Morehead taught that to me. Kentucky taught me how to be independent, survive on my own and how to be a great bowler." Bryanna Coté of Red Rock, Arizona, earned the No. 2 seed for the televised finals and will be in search of her first career PWBA title when she steps into the bright television lights. "It's a dream come true," said Coté, who was a four-time National Tenpin Coaches Association Player of the Year at Central Missouri. "All week, I was just trying to focus on making good shots and making sure I trust it because the shot was not very easy. I told myself during the last game to bowl the best game I could, and whatever happens, happens. I'm just very grateful I bowled well enough to make the show. Pluhowsky will make her fourth TV appearance of the season after defeating Colombia native Rocio Restrepo in the Group A stepladder final, 201-188. Restrepo advanced to the final after knocking off Erin McCarthy of Omaha, Nebraska, 219-179. The fourth and final TV spot went to Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, who defeated Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California, 239-214, in the Group B stepladder final. Parkin defeated Diana Zavjalova of Latvia, 223-181, to advance to the final match. Restrepo Grabs Lead at PWBA Lexington Open
When Colombia native Rocio Restrepo, now living in Louisville, Ohio, arrived for the Thursday practice session of the 2016 Professional Women's Bowling Association Lexington Open, to say she was tired would have been an understatement. Restrepo averaged more than 221 through 12 games of qualifying Friday to take the lead at Collins Bowling Center-Eastland with a 2,662 total. She was followed by Bryanna Cote of Red Rock, Arizona (2,574), Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois (2,553), Diana Zavjalova of Latvia (2,543) and Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California (2,535). The 14-time Team Colombia member noticed a few similarities between her home center, Stonehedge Entertainment, and Collins Bowling Center-Eastland. She also relied on a good memory to help her attack the 38-foot lane condition. "I was still a little tired," said Restrepo, who is the top seed for the PWBA Greater Detroit Open TV finals, scheduled to air July 19 at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network. "Today, I thought about what rolls good in my home house - what works, what doesn't work - and I felt that kept me more focused. When I was younger in Colombia, there was a house similar to this one, and I remembered what rolled well there, too. I have a really good memory from my younger years, so I had a good idea of what I like to see. I guess being tired made me work harder." Restrepo's teammate on the Colombian national team, 2014 United States Bowling Congress Queens champion Maria Jose Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, earned the final spot in Saturday's cashers' round with a 2,351 total, a 195.92 average.
