2017 PWBA PLAYER AND ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

For the third consecutive year, Liz Johnson of Deerfield, Illinois, was named Professional Women's Bowling Association Player of the Year, and the 2017 Rookie of the Year honor went to Poland's Daria Pajak.

Johnson put together a dream season that included three titles, two of which were majors - the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship and U.S. Women's Open. Her U.S. Women's Open victory was her fourth consecutive win at the event and sixth overall.

The 43-year-old right-hander made the championship round at all four majors, finishing second at the United States Bowling Congress Queens and third at this week's season-ending Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship.

She led the PWBA Tour this year in earnings ($83,500), points (154,150), match-play appearances (11) and championship-round appearances (nine), and she tied with PWBA spokesperson Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, for the lead in cashes with 13.

Johnson mathematically locked up the award before the final event of the season.

2017PWBAPOYLizJohnsonForWeb250x140"To be in the company I'm in with some of the greatest up-and-coming bowlers from around the world, and to be able to do what I've been doing at 43, is rewarding and humbling at the same time," Johnson said. "I actually do feel like I'm getting better as I get older. It's a combination of trying to stay healthy and learning from every tournament I go to. From week to week, we had to play different parts of the lane, so I've had to become more versatile, too. I'm proud that I could do that and find success, especially when I was out of my comfort zone."

Pajak, a 2016 graduate of Webber International, entered the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship as the frontrunner for rookie of the year, and she could've claimed it outright with a first-round win over her former collegiate teammate and PWBA Tour roommate, Verity Crawley of England, the other rookie-of-the-year contender.

Crawley won the match against Pajak but fell to Latvia's Diana Zavjalova, another former Webber Warrior, in the second round, solidifying the award for Pajak - a bittersweet win over one of her best friends. Crawley could've claimed the honor by making the championship round at the Tour Championship.

Pajak's season included two TV appearances and her first PWBA title, a win at the Greater Detroit Open, an event she nearly decided to skip to regroup after struggling the previous few weeks.

She rolled three perfect games during the 2017 season, including two at the U.S. Women's Open, where she was the top seed for the stepladder finals. She fell to Johnson in the title match, 188-176.

"Being the rookie of the year was my goal when I joined the Tour, and I knew one of the biggest contenders for the trophy was going to be Verity," said Pajak, who finished 10th on the PWBA points list this season. "I started the season very slowly, and I was very frustrated. I think I learned quick, though, and that's why the end of the season was much better. I feel very accomplished because I never gave up."2017PWBAROYDariaForWeb250x140

The 2017 PWBA Tour schedule included 14 events, 13 of which counted toward the season statistics. Competitors saw a variety of lane conditions that tested their versatility, and 13 of the winners were determined on CBS Sports Network.

The schedule kicked off in Rohnert Park, California, in April and concluded on a four-lane setup specially installed by QubicaAMF inside the Old Dominion Building, part of the expansive complex at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia.

All rounds of the PWBA competition leading up to the TV finals were broadcast on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the Professional Bowlers Association.

SHANNON O'KEEFE WINS 2017 SMITHFIELD PWBA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

For the third time in her career, Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, found herself in tears on the television set of a major bowling championship, but this time it was as the winner of the 2017 Smithfield Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour Championship, the first major title of her career.

The 38-year-old right-hander struck six times in the first seven frames of the title match against Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, on Wednesday and claimed her sixth PWBA Tour title by a 222-203 margin. The win earned O'Keefe $20,000, while Kulick took home $10,000 as the runner-up.

The championship round was broadcast live on CBS Sports Network from Richmond Raceway's Old Dominion Building.

O'Keefe was slowed only by a 3-6-7-10 split in the third frame, which she was unable to convert, but spared a 10 pin in her final frame and got nine on her fill ball to shut out Kulick, whose only strike in the second half of the game came on her fill ball.

"I've dreamed of this moment for a really long time, and I don't know if there are words to describe how I feel," O'Keefe said. "I've been a contender at the U.S. Women's Open for the last decade and haven't been able to pull it off, which has been frustrating. I'm just overwhelmed right now by how this feels."

The last time O'Keefe bowled for a major title was the 2015 U.S. Women's Open, where she left, and missed, a final-frame washout, allowing United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Liz Johnson of Deerfield, Illinois, to claim the second of her four consecutive U.S. Women's Open titles.

This win also nearly got away from O'Keefe, who left a 4-6-7-10 split in the 10th frame of her semifinal match with Johnson. O'Keefe entered the final frame on a string of five consecutive strikes, and the miscue allowed Johnson to throw a strike and then spare a 7 pin for a 222 tie.

It took three one-ball roll-offs for O'Keefe to lock up her spot in the championship match. Both players struck on their first two opportunities, and O'Keefe won the third, 10-9.

"The split in the 10th was a really bad shot, and I knew it wasn't going to hold because I whipped my hand around it," O'Keefe said. "I immediately thought back to last time, but ultimately, I knew I threw nine great shots, and I was happy. It wasn't the best result in a pressure moment, but it is what it is. Then, she gave me an opportunity, and from that moment on, it was go. I am grateful I had that second chance."

As the points leader each season since the PWBA Tour returned in 2015, Johnson has been seeded into the televised portion of the event. The three-time reigning PWBA Player of the Year has not been able to advance to the title match.

On her way to the final Wednesday, Kulick built an early lead against Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, and led by nearly 40 pins at the halfway point. Two opens from Pluhowsky in the first six frames proved to be her undoing, and Kulick tossed nine strikes on the way to a 247-191 win.

Kulick, a six-time major champion, also was the runner-up at the 2017 Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship, losing to Johnson in the final.

"I did my job and threw really good shots, and the ball reaction just went away a little bit," said Kulick, whose last major title was the U.S. Women's Open in 2012. "Swishy 7, ring 10, it could've gone either way. Shannon had a good look all week long and bowled great. I have no regrets, but I'm really tired of finishing second. Overall, I had a great season. Even though Liz ran away with it, I finished second for player of the year. I'm making cuts, I'm cashing and I'm making TV. That's all I can do, and next year, something's going to give."

PWBA members qualified for the Tour Championship either by winning a title during the 2017 season or earning enough competition points. All eligible 2017 PWBA Tour champions received automatic invitations to the Tour Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled through the PWBA points list.

O'Keefe earned her spot at the season-ending event with her recent win at the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open, Kulick secured her place with a win at the PWBA Fountain Valley Open and Johnson, the season's only three-time winner, advanced with a win at the PWBA Storm Sacramento Open.

Pluhowsky, whose best finish this season was a runner-up effort at the Nationwide PWBA Rochester Open, was the lone left-hander to qualify for the Tour Championship and did so via the points list.

Johnson also won two of the season's three majors, the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship and the U.S. Women's Open, while finishing second at the other, the USBC Queens. Her consistency locked up her third consecutive player-of-the-year award before a single ball was thrown at this week's Tour Championship.

As the top two players on the season points list, Johnson and Kulick earned automatic berths in Wednesday's semifinals, while O'Keefe and Pluhowsky battled their way through the 16-player single-elimination bracket, featuring best-of-five matches.

All rounds of the PWBA Tour Championship leading up to the TV finals were broadcast on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the Professional Bowlers Association.

The lanes were specially installed inside the Old Dominion Building by QubicaAMF, the official supplier of bowling equipment for the 2017 Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship.

SEMIFINALISTS SET AT 2017 SMITHFIELD PWBA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

The wait finally is over for Liz Johnson of Deerfield, Illinois, and Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, as their opponents for the final round of the 2017 Smithfield Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour Championship now are set.

CBS Sports Network will televise the semifinals and title match of the PWBA Tour Championship on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern. As the top two players on the PWBA Tour points list this season, Johnson and Kulick automatically earned spots in the semifinals.

Johnson, who led the PWBA Tour in points this season on the way to a third consecutive PWBA Player of the Year Award, will take on Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, in one semifinal, while Kulick faces left-hander Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, in the opening semifinal match.

Johnson and Kulick looked on this week at Richmond Raceway's Old Dominion Building as the rest of the 16-player field battled through best-of-five matches in the single-elimination bracket for a chance to join them on the show, where the winner will take home a PWBA major title and a $20,000 top prize.

"I just have to be prepared to throw a lot of strikes, but I still have to stay within my own game and not worry about what anyone else is doing," said Johnson, who is looking for her first TV win in three championship-round appearances at the Tour Championship. "It's 10 frames, one at a time. I'll stick to my usual philosophy, and if the pins fall, they fall. I've just got to find the right ball and the right part of the lane, so the ball goes through the pins the right way."

O'Keefe just missed making the TV show in the last two editions of the Tour Championship but earned her spot on Wednesday's show with a 3-1 third-round win against her Team USA teammate Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, the event's 2015 champion.

The see-saw match started with O'Keefe taking the opening game 234-233. McEwan had an opportunity to strike out for a tie, but she left a 10 pin on her final offering.

The duo had alternating wins over the next two games, before O'Keefe spared a 10 pin in the final frame of the fourth game and struck on her fill ball for a 220-216 win to close out the match.

O'Keefe also had wins this week against Birgit Poppler of Germany (3-0) and Sin Li Jane of Malaysia (3-1).

"All you can do it put yourself in position to win, and I'm fortunate to now be in position to potentially win a major," said O'Keefe, who earned her spot at the Tour Championship as the 2017 PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open champion. "I feel really good and really confident. I'm seeing things well and making adjustment quickly. For me now, it's just make good shots, take it one shot at a time and focus on what I can control."

The lone left-hander in the Tour Championship field, Pluhowsky reached the championship round with wins over her Team USA teammate Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas (3-1), Malaysia's Siti Rahman (3-2) and reigning United States Bowling Congress Queens champion Diana Zavjalova of Latvia in Tuesday's third round (3-1).

Pluhowsky averaged more than 230 in her win over Zavjalova, which included a 248-238 victory to complete the victory.

Wednesday's show will mark Pluhowsky's third television appearance of the season, and, though she recently came up short to McEwan in the finals of the 2017 Nationwide PWBA Rochester Open, she is becoming more confident and comfortable with each opportunity under the TV lights.

"I've had chances on TV to win, and I haven't been able to get it done, but I had chances to make shots to win this week, and I was able to do that," Pluhowsky said. "I feel like I'm kind of over the hump. I know it wasn't TV, but it's the same kind of pressure-filled situations, and I see that as great progress. Now, I just want to ride the momentum and see what happens."

PWBA members qualified for the Tour Championship either by winning a title during the 2017 season or earning enough competition points. All eligible 2017 PWBA Tour champions received automatic invitations to the Tour Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled through the PWBA points list.

The PWBA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards also were determined by competition points, going to Johnson and Poland's Daria Pajak, respectively.

Johnson mathematically locked up her third consecutive award prior to the start of the Tour Championship. Pajak had a chance to claim hers with a first-round win Tuesday, which she failed to do, but went on to earn the honor when England's Verity Crawley came up short in her second-round match against Zavjalova.

O'KEEFE AMONG CONTENDERS AT 2017 SMITHFIELD PWBA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Shannon O'Keefe of O'Fallon, Illinois, has had an up-and-down year on the Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour, but she has gotten more comfortable and more confident as the season has gone on.

The 38-year-old right-hander only has made one championship round appearance in 2017, but she made the most of it, claiming the fifth title of her PWBA career. The late-season win guaranteed her spot in this week's Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship and gave her some momentum heading into the event.

O'Keefe now is eyeing her first major victory at PWBA Tour Championship, where she is among the 10 players still in contention for the coveted title and $20,000 top prize. The event is taking place on a four-lane setup inside the Old Dominion Building, part of the vast Richmond Raceway complex.

As with her season, O'Keefe got stronger as her opening match went on, and she defeated Germany's Birgit Poppler by scores of 214-209, 269-199 and 279-208 to advance to Tuesday's second round with a 3-0 victory in the best-of-five match.

O'Keefe is looking to improve on her previous two finishes at the Tour Championship, where her run each time ended one match shy of the televised finals. Both years, she fell to the eventual champion.

"I feel really good overall and confident in what I was seeing today and the choices I made," said O'Keefe, who won the 2017 PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open. "It's really challenging at times to not think about what happened in the past, but I know if I can keep focused on one shot at a time and not think too far ahead, I should be OK. The last two years, I felt like I bowled great, and it just didn't go my way. All I can do is control what I can control and make good shots. If it's meant to be, and I find myself on that show, even better."

Other winners Monday were Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California; Sin Li Jane of Malaysia; Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, the lone left-hander in the field; Malaysia's Siti Rahman and 2017 PWBA Rookie of the Year candidate Verity Crawley of England.

The 16-player field at the PWBA Tour Championship included all of the year's eligible PWBA Tour champions, and the bracket was filled in using the 2017 PWBA points list.

All six first-round matches took place Monday, and competition at the Old Dominion Building resumes Tuesday at noon Eastern.

Latvia's Diana Zavjalova and Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, earned first-round byes as the third- and fourth-ranked players on the 2017 points list and will join the action for the first time Tuesday.

Liz Johnson of Deerfield, Illinois, and Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, topped the points list in first and second place, respectively, and automatically advanced to the championship round, which will air live on CBS Sports Network on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern.

As the points leader this season, Johnson mathematically has locked up her third-consecutive PWBA Player of the Year Award, but she, too, is looking for redemption at the Tour Championship. Despite being seeded into the semifinals all three years, the title has eluded her.

"It seems like the scores are pretty high so far, but you definitely have to be prepared for anything when it comes to the TV finals," said Johnson, a three-time winner on the PWBA Tour this season. "You always have to play the offensive and hope to strike. Sometimes you have to strike a lot, and sometimes you have to make spares and fill frames. Either way, it's going to be a fun night. Just being able to make the show is an honor and privilege, but I'd really like to finish the job."

The 2017 PWBA Rookie of the Year race was left unresolved Monday when Crawley defeated frontrunner, Daria Pajak of Poland, 3-2, in the opening round. Had Pajak won, she would've claimed the award outright. Now, if Crawley can make it to the TV show, she will earn the honor. Anything less, and Pajak will be the 2017 winner.

All rounds of the PWBA Tour Championship leading up to the TV finals are being broadcast on Xtra Frame, the exclusive online bowling channel for the Professional Bowlers Association.

The lanes were specially installed inside the Old Dominion Building by QubicaAMF, the official supplier of bowling equipment for the 2017 Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship.
