Johnson claims USBC Queens title

At the start of the week, Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., had virtually written off her chances of capturing the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Queens, the one title that had always eluded her.

Fast forward a few days and Johnson found herself standing on the lanes wearing the Queens tiara, holding the trophy and savoring a moment she had only dreamed about up until that point.

Johnson defeated 2007 Queens champion Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., 247-204, to earn the title before a crowd of nearly 1,500 at the Reno Events Center. The victory earned her $30,000 and a place among bowling's biggest names as Queens champion.

"This is the most prestigious women's event, and to be in the company of some of the women who have won this is amazing," said Johnson, who finished second to Shannon Pluhowsky at the 2006 Queens. "I was so close to winning the title in 2006, and it took me a couple of months to get over that loss, but this feels absolutely amazing."

Johnson, the top seed, never thought she would have a shot at the title this week after getting off to a rocky start and landing in 71st place after the opening round of qualifying at the National Bowling Stadium. She slowly moved up the standings and fought through the double-elimination match-play bracket undefeated to claim the title.

"This week I bowled OK but my reaction wasn't that good, and I barely won some matches," said Johnson, who now has 13 professional women's titles including the 2007 U.S. Women's Open. "I'm a fighter, though. When it comes to anything, especially bowling, I'm going to fight my way through."

Johnson and Kulick both got off to hot starts in the championship match. After Johnson left a 7 pin on a solid pocket shot, she rattled off four consecutive strikes.

Kulick, however, started the game with five strikes before disaster struck. In the sixth frame, Kulick left the Greek Church, the 4-6-7-9-10 split, and fell into a deficit from which she would never recover.

After converting the 2 pin in the sixth frame, Johnson strung together three more strikes to easily claim the championship.

"This is the one title that has eluded her, and she earned it today," Kulick said. "If there is any bowler I want to finish second to, it's Liz. She's having a great career. She just keeps fighting and seems to overcome everything."

In reaching the title match, Kulick took out Michelle Feldman of Auburn, N.Y., 221-170, in the semifinal. Feldman started with an open and Kulick never trailed in the match.

Kulick defeated Lisa Bishop of Belleville, Mich., the match before by starting with nine consecutive strikes in a 262-224 win. Stepping up in the final frame in her bid for a televised perfect game, Kulick threw the ball a tad slow and it hooked through the head pin and left the 3-4-6-7 split.

To open the championship round, Bishop defeated Brenda Edwards of Mansfield, Texas, 221-199. After leaving the 3-4-6-7-9-10 split in the final frame, Bishop converted the spare to keep her hopes alive. Edwards could have advanced with three consecutive strikes in the 10th frame, but left the 6-10 on her first shot.

The Queens championship round was conducted on lanes specially constructed inside the Reno Events Center, which will host the USBC Convention this weekend. The same lanes will be used to tape Bowling's Clash of Champions, a USBC event, which will air on CBS Sports on May 9 from 4-6 p.m. Eastern.

The Queens, which is presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, featured a field of 251 of the top female bowlers in the world competing for a total prize fund of $200,000.

Dorin-Ballard Almost a "10" in PBA Women's Series Showdown Win

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard was almost a "10" in recording one of the most unusual victories in her hall of fame bowling career at Kegel Training Center.

Dorin-Ballard, one of the most successful women bowlers in history, rolled a television record 20 consecutive strikes, including 11 in a row in the Wild Card match, to win the inaugural PBA Women's Series Showdown presented by the United States Bowling Congress which aired on ESPN Sunday.

In an event that employed the Johnny Petraglia Scoring System for the first time on national television, the Keller, Texas, resident posted a near-perfect score of 11 in the Championship Round Title match to nip Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio, by a single point and rising star Stefanie Nation of Arlington, Texas, by two points.

Under the Petraglia system, players receive one point for each ball thrown in each frame - and the lowest score wins. A perfect game - 10 strikes - is a "10." And that's what Dorin-Ballard almost had, except for the 10 pin she left (and converted) in her 10th frame. Woessner nearly matched her, rolling eight strikes along with a pair of spares in the third and fourth frames for a score of 12. Nation threw seven strikes and converted three spares for her score of 13.

"I'm still in shock," Dorin-Ballard said. "I was lucky to get into the championship round."

Dorin-Ballard, who collected a $25,000 first prize, also threw nine strikes in the Championship Round Wild Card match, but she wound up in a 12-12 tie with Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., because she missed a single pin spare conversion attempt in the second frame. Needing a third shot to make the six pin in that frame, Dorin-Ballard's score of three for that frame kept Macpherson in the match. Dorin-Ballard then had to throw another three strikes in a row to nip Macpherson by a single pin to win a three-ball roll-off to get into the championship round.

"Any time you bowl Wendy Macpherson, you have to bowl your best game," Dorin-Ballard said. "All of these ladies know how to strike. I knew I had to keep striking to have a chance."

It was a unique event for the six top performers in the PBA Women's Series presented by USBC champions during the 2008-09 season, and it gave the women an opportunity to showcase their bowling skills in an usual bowling environment.

"I am glad the women are back on television," Dorlin-Ballard added. "This series of events is a step in the right direction for the future of women's professional bowling. With the help of the PBA, USBC, Brunswick, Dexter, Turbo and Kegel, it's just a matter of time before other sponsors come forward and see the value of the women's tour."

Scroggins Wins 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open for Second Career Major

Defeating Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year contenders Norm Duke and Chris Barnes in the stepladder finals, Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, won his second career major in winning the 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open Sunday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

It was Scroggin's sixth career PBA Tour title; he won the 2005 United States Bowling Congress Masters for his first major victory also defeating Duke. By beating Duke and Barnes, Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, earns 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year honors.

Scroggins defeated PBA Hall of Famer Duke 191-173 in the championship match to win the $100,000 first prize and three-year Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exemption.

"It's so satisfying to win it because it's such a grind," Scroggins said. "I just wanted to go out and bowl a decent game. Normally you're going to have to throw a 220 or 230 so it was just karma, I guess, that I was able to beat Norm and Chris."

"I'm a believer in you have to beat the best to be best and I consider Norm to be one of the best," Scroggins added.

In the semi-final match, Scroggins defeated Chris Barnes 200-199, who had a chance to repeat as Player of the Year with a victory. Barnes could have won the match with a strike on the first ball of the 10th frame but left a solid 8 pin. Needing a strike on his fill ball to tie the match, Barnes left a 10 pin.

"I threw my best shot," said Barnes who had eight television appearances this season and two wins to get back into the Player of the Year race. "I've put it in perspective--things work out the way they work out, but I'm just thankful to be in this position. Four weeks ago I didn't think I would have a shot at Player of the Year."

Duke, who ranks tied for fifth in all-time career PBA Tour titles with 32, was trying to become the first bowler to win back-to-back U.S. Opens since Dave Husted accomplished the feat in 1995-96. Duke was Player of the Year in 1994 and 2000. He left a 4-6-7-10 split in the third frame and a 4-6-7 split in the ninth frame.

"I've said it before, it's more than rolling a good shot," said Duke. "On those shots where I had the splits I thought those were two of the best shots of my career. I still feel I bowled well, the breaks just didn't go my way.

"I'm proud of Mike, he did a great job."

In the opening match former exempt player Richard Wolfe of Vienna, Va., defeated PBA Hall of Famer and 19-time PBA Tour titlist Amleto Monacelli, 213-176 to advance to the second match where he lost to Barnes 243-240.

The 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open marks the end of the regular season on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour.

Duke and Barnes in Running for Player of the Year by Making 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open Finals

Defending champion Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., earned the top qualifier position Saturday for the stepladder finals of the 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open, enabling him to control his destiny for his third Player of the Year honor.

Considered one of the most demanding events in bowling---both mentally and physically---Duke had an overall tournament match play record of 15-8-1 and a 215 average in the fourth major and final event of season.

Duke, who was Player of the Year in 1994 and 2000, finished ahead of No. 2 qualifier, five-time Tour titlist Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, who had a 19-5 match play record and averaged 210 for the tournament.

With an opportunity to defend his 2007-08 Player of the Year honor is 12-time Tour titlist and 2005 U.S. Open Champion Chris Barnes who qualified third for the finals.

Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, who led the Player of the Year race going into the U.S. Open, will have to watch from the sidelines as Duke and Barnes try to capture the Player of the Year title with a victory. Sunday's live ESPN-televised championship round gets underway at 1 p.m. Eastern.

"Player of the Year is great but I'm here to win the U.S. Open," said Duke who was Player of the Year in 1994 and 2000. "There's some work still to be done---you really can't think of anything before or after, you have to stay in the moment.

"The way I look at it I have about a 50-50 chance to win and who knows the way this tournament goes a 125 game might do it."

Duke, a 32-time Tour titlist with six majors, will try to become the first bowler to win back-to-back U.S. Opens since Dave Husted accomplished the feat in 1995-96. The 45-year-old Duke is the only bowler to win three consecutive majors and is just one of two bowlers to win professional bowling's Grand Slam (Mike Aulby is the other) and one of just five players to win the Triple Crown.

Barnes, of Double Oak, Texas, had made five television appearances this season before winning back-to-back titles in March to get back into the Player of the Year race.

"I would never have believed I'd be in this position four weeks ago," Barnes said. "I've been wound up all week and I really believed I had a legitimate shot at winning this week. But this is the U.S. Open so anything can happen."

Opening up the stepladder finals will be No. 4 qualifier Amleto Monacelli of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, against No. 5 qualifier, former exempt Tour player Richard Wolfe of Vienna, Va. Monacelli, a PBA Hall of Famer and 19-time Tour titlist, defeated Barnes 278-208 to advance to the finals in Saturday's final position round match. Monacelli hasn't been a regular on Tour since 2006 and is making his first Tour telecast since the 2006 Tournament of Champions. His last title came in 2005. Wolfe is trying for his first career PBA Tour title.

The U.S. Open winner will take home $100,000 and a three-year Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exemption.

PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli Tops Leaderboard at 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open

With the help of a first-round match play record of 7-1, Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, moved into the lead in the 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Monacelli, a 19-time PBA Tour titlist who is bowling only in occasional PBA Tour stops this season, has a 7,738 35-game overall pinfall and leads defending U.S. Open champion Norm Duke in second with 7,715 and reigning PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes in third with 7,677. During match play, players receive 30 bonus pins for winning a match and 15 pins each in the event of a tie.

"I really look forward to bowling the U.S. Open because of the challenging lane conditions," Monacelli said. "I'm reading the lanes well and choosing the right equipment and feel like I'm bowling as well as I did 20 years ago when I was doing my best on Tour."

Monacelli, 47, hasn't competed full-time on Tour since 2006 when he developed a hip injury which he has only recently fully recovered from. He won back-to-back Player of the Year honors in 1989 and 1990.

Monacelli started the tournament in 33rd qualifying position and has moved steadily up the standings.

"I'm going into this tournament without any expectations," said Monacelli, who was voted No. 21 on PBA's list of 50 greatest players which was announced earlier this year as part of its 50th anniversary. 'I'm just enjoying what's out there and hopefully I'll continue to be able to read the lanes well and match up the right equipment."

With a major title and Player of the Year implications hanging in the balance, Duke and Barnes continued to be in good position to make the stepladder finals. If Malott, who is currently in 21st place, fails to make the stepladder finals, it will open the door for Barnes and Duke to make a run for Player of the Year if they can make the finals and then win.

Duke, who won Player of the Year honors in 1994 and 2000, has three titles this season, including winning the PBA World Championship which kicked off the season last October. Barnes had made five television finals appearances this season before winning back-to-back titles in March.

The 24 remaining players will compete in two more rounds of match play Saturday to determine the top five for the live two-hour ESPN stepladder finals which will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Norm Duke Struggles But Still Holds 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open Lead

Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Norm Duke retained his position as qualifying leader in the 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open for the second consecutive day but found the going a lot tougher Thursday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Duke has a 3,997 18-game pinfall (overall 222.0 average) to hold a 48-pin lead over reigning PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes. In Thursday's third-round six-game qualifying block Duke struggled, rolling a 146 in the second game and averaging 195.1.

The original field of 415 professional and amateur bowlers has now been cut to the top 103 who will bowl an additional nine-game qualifying round Friday morning to determine the 24 players who advance to round-robin match play Friday evening. The top five players after match play will advance to the live, two-hour ESPN-televised stepladder finals on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

"It's going to catch up with you sooner or later in the U.S. Open and it happens to everyone," Duke said of his sub-par performance Thursday. "It was just one of those days where I felt even some of my best shots turned into splits. I think I had at least two splits in every game."

"I'm disappointed but I haven't lost the desire and that's very important. You just have to keep digging."

Duke, with three titles this season and Barnes with two wins, are in the running for Player of the Year honors but must win to have a shot at that title.

Duke, a 32-time PBA Tour titlist who has won professional bowling's Grand Slam and Triple Crown, is trying to become the first bowler to defend a U.S. Open title since Dave Husted accomplished the feat in 1995 and 1996.

Currently in 41st with a 3,685 pinfall (204.7 average), Wes Malott, who also won three titles this season and has the inside track for Player of the Year, made the tournament's first cut but has some work to do to make the top 24 for match play.

"Yesterday I gave a lot of pins away because I wasn't feeling 100 percent and that affected my ability to focus," said Malott, who has six career PBA Tour titles. "I felt better today and was able to rebound."

"Tomorrow's another day and with a nine-game qualifying block to go there's a lot of bowling left to make it to the top 24."

The U.S. Open winner will earn a $100,000 first prize, a three-year PBA Tour exemption and Grand Slam points which will impact players trying to qualify for the GEICO PBA Team Shootout hosted by Six Flags in June.

Norm Duke Takes PBA Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open Second Round Qualifying Lead

There is a lot at stake for Norm Duke at the 66th Professional Bowlers Association Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open-a major title defense and a shot at Player of the Year honors. The 44-year-old Hall of Famer demonstrated he's up for the challenge by taking the second round qualifying lead Wednesday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

With a 2,826 12-game overall pinfall (235.5 average) and averaging 243.5 in Wednesday's six-game round, Duke holds a 141-pin lead over reigning PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes in second who is a contender to repeat as Player of the Year.

"I'm ecstatic about how well I've been bowling to this point," Duke said. "You're not supposed to be able to shoot numbers like this at the U.S. Open."

Duke, who is tied for fourth with Parker Bohn III for career PBA Tour titles with 32---six of those majors---took last week off from the Tour to prepare for the U.S. Open.

"For this tournament you need all your mental skills," Duke said. "Taking last week off was part of my preparation and as a result I feel I'm as ready as I can be for this tournament."

Duke and Barnes are the only two players who can challenge current front-runner Wes Malott for the Player of the Year title but would have to win for any chance for the honor. Malott is in 58th place after Wednesday's qualifying round.

"It's nice to be in position for Player of the Year," said Duke, who was Player of the Year in 1994 and 2000, "but after 27 years, I've only won one of these (U.S. Opens). It's not easy, but I go into it thinking why not me?"

A testament to Duke's prowess in majors was his win in the PBA World Championship that kicked off the 2008-09 season where he became the only bowler to win three consecutive majors. He is just one of two bowlers to win professional bowling's Grand Slam (USBC Masters, Tournament of Champions, U.S. Open and World Championship) and one of just five players to win the Triple Crown (Tournament of Champions, U.S. Open and World Championship).

Dave Husted was the last bowler to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles in 1995 and 1996.

The entire field of 415 professional and amateur players will bowl another six-game qualifying round Thursday after which the field will be cut to the top 103 players for another nine-game round on Friday. The top 24 after 27 games will advance to round-robin match play which concludes on Saturday. The top five players will advance to the live, two-hour ESPN-televised stepladder finals on Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The U.S. Open winner will earn a $100,000 first prize, a three-year PBA Tour exemption and Grand Slam points which will impact players trying to qualify for the GEICO PBA Team Shootout hosted by Six Flags in June.
