Hugh Miller had his sights set on the championship from the opening round of competition, "In qualifying I wanted to finish strong so I stepped up my focus to finish in the top eight." The 51 year old southpaw did so in a big way by rolling 12 consecutive strikes in the last game of qualifying to take the second seed position and securing a double bye into the round of 16.

Miller's focus remained strong going 6-1 in match play en route to a championship showdown with 1999 PBA Senior Player of the Year Dale Eagle. "I knew (Dale) Eagle was going to be tough, and I was going to have to shoot a big game, so I knew I had to strike a lot."

"My last win was in 2002, and that was a regular tour event. I haven't even won a regional since 2004." Ending an extensive title drought Miller added "Every few years things just come together for me."

When asked how comfortable he was on the lanes, Miller replied, "In Jackson I finished second, but I left a couple opens in the championship match, so I was looking to redeem myself and I stayed focused. I got myself into a good level of concentration in the championship match. I got a lucky break the first ball in the 10th frame, I gave the ball away a little, but the left lane was hooking more so it came back to strike." Miller finished the tenth with two more strikes, winning his first career PBA Senior Tour title in style, bowling a perfect game in the championship match. What's next for the Senior Tour's newest champion? "My goal now is to win again as soon as possible."

Lead by prolific champions who dominated the sport through several eras including Dick Weber (50s-60s), Earl Anthony (70s-80s) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (90s-today), the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) has released a list of the "50 Greatest Players in PBA History."

The 50th Anniversary season of the Denny's PBA Tour is set to begin in October. The 50 Greatest Players will be introduced as part of a gala celebration for the golden anniversary of the PBA Tour at the Tournament of Champions, January 19-25, at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas.

The 50 Greatest, which also includes such iconic bowling stars as Don Carter, Mark Roth and Pete Weber (full list below), were selected from an original list of 100 by an esteemed committee of 34 individuals, comprised of members of the media, bowling industry and coaches. Later this summer, the committee will have the unenviable task of ranking these great players 1 - 50.

The final rankings will be revealed throughout the 20-week PBA season during the ESPN Sunday afternoon telecasts from October-April, culminating with the announcement of the greatest player in PBA history.

"Since its inception the Denny's PBA Tour has been defined by great players," said Denny's PBA Tour CEO and Commissioner Fred Schreyer. "As we head into our 50th year we look forward to a season-long celebration that we know will evoke great memories from the past while simultaneously creating lasting impressions for the future."

Fans will have the opportunity to rank their top 15 bowlers on the PBA's official website, www.pba.com. Should a fan's top 15 bowlers match the committee's top 15 in exact order, they will be entered into a drawing to win a framed 50th Anniversary lithograph.

In a battle of Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famers, first-year Senior Tour player Wayne Webb defeated Johnny Petraglia to win the 2008 PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast Friday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Webb, a 20-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist bowling in only his second Senior Tour event, defeated Petraglia 204-172 in the championship to win the $20,000 first prize.

"Bowling the championship match was just like the rest of the tournament for me," said the 50-year-old Webb. "You really had to stay on your toes and keep moving and adjusting. I really didn't feel like I had that good of a shot until this morning's match play round. It felt like I had to make perfect shots the whole tournament."

For Petraglia, it was a bitter disappointment after having dominated the entire tournament from the opening qualifying round to earn the No. 1 qualifying spot for the stepladder finals.

"You never want to lead a tournament by a lot because it makes it that much more terrible to lose - just terrible," Petraglia said.

Webb was able to overcome an open in the sixth frame - a missed 10-pin - which dropped him two pins behind Petraglia."

"I couldn't believe I missed that spare but I just yanked it," Webb said. "I thought that was going to be the turning point in the match but I was able to recover."

"It's tough to see someone who bowled as well as Johnny this week lose but when it comes down to one match, it happens."

In the semi-final match Webb defeated two-time Senior U.S. Open champion and PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, 225-212 to advance to the final. In the opening match, Baker defeated one-time Senior Tour and five-time Denny's PBA Tour champion Bob Handley, 176-156. It was the second consecutive year that Baker and Handley finished third and fourth in the Senior U.S. Open, respectively.

As one of the most demanding formats in the sport, the four finalists had to bowl 51 games of qualifying and match play to make it to the stepladder.
