Duke of New York

Norm Duke

As one of the most popular bowlers in Denny's PBA Tour history, Norm Duke might be the only bowler who could have gotten away with his mistreatment of New York bowlers on Sunday.

Duke defeated four bowlers from New York to capture his fourth career title in New York state, knocking off top-seed Ryan Shafer, 218-179, to win the 2006 Columbia 300 Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes.

The victory was the 25th of Duke's storied career, giving him sole possession of ninth on the career titles list. He also became the first bowler this season to win two titles, taking early control of the 2006-07 PBA Player of the Year race heading into a two-week holiday break.

"I had a tough choice and I chose to play an area not many were playing," said Duke, who played the lanes straight rather than playing inside like the other four finalists. "Two days ago I said I believed if I continued to play where I was playing things would get better for me and lo and behold I'm the one left standing. It was a tough call but it worked out pretty well."

Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.) held the lead through four frames, but working on a double he left a 7-10 split and opened in the 5th, giving the slight edge to Duke. The Clermont, Fla., native responded with four strikes in the next five frames to clinch the victory.

Duke came into the championship round as the fourth-seed and became the first bowler since Tommy Jones in the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 to win as many as four matches en route to a title. Shafer, meanwhile, became the ninth consecutive top-seed to lose in a stepladder final.

In the semifinal match, Duke held a slim nine-pin lead over Tommy Delutz Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.) through eight frames. A crucial strike by Duke in the 9th frame became even bigger when Delutz failed to match him in the 9th, settling for a nine-spare. Another nine-spare in the 10th meant Duke only needed to mark in the 10th for the 226-207 win.

Duke won his second match over third-seeded Joe Ciccone (Buffalo, N.Y.), 257-206, striking in eight of the first nine frames. In the first stepladder match, Duke knocked off No. 5 Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.), 248-184.

Duke took home $25,000 while Shafer earned $13,000 for second. Delutz took home $6,500 for third, Ciccone earned $5,500 for fourth while Fagan earned $5,000 for fifth.

New York State of Mind

Michael Fagan

Bowling in their own state and in comfortable surroundings was all that four Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour exempt bowlers needed to get to the stepladder finals of the 2006 Columbia 300 Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes.

No. 1 Ryan Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.), No. 2 Tommy Delutz Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.), No. 3 Joe Ciccone (Buffalo, N.Y.) and No. 5 Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) along with No. 4 Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.) advanced after 18 games of round robin match play Friday.

Fagan made the most dramatic entrance into Sunday's tournament finale, edging Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas), 248-238, in the Round of 16 position round to pick up the fifth and final spot with a 7-10-1 round-robin match play record and a 32-game pinfall of 7,588, including 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie.

"I had just come off the same pair and had a pretty good line to the pocket," said Fagan. "I had trouble carrying in practice so I was trying to stay behind a little more so I could get the 10-pin out. Patrick Healey bowled really well out there, it could have gone either way."

Shafer enters Sunday's final with the No. 1 seed after leading throughout the entire tournament, finishing 126 pins ahead of No. 2 Delutz, with a 32-game pinfall of 7,716 and a round-robin match play record of 13-5.

Also going 13-5, Delutz finished with 7,590, two pins ahead of Ciccone who finished with a match play record of 12-6.

The lone non-New Yorker, Duke finished 8-9-1, with a 7,516 pinfall.

Mika Makes a Move

Mika Koivuniemi

Mika Koivuniemi is proving that change is a good thing.

After using 10 different balls on Thursday, Koivuniemi changed balls again Friday and the result was an 8-1 match play record in the Round of 32.

The Finland native went from 48th to 30th Thursday in the second block of the Round of 64 to just make the match play cut. With nine games left, he now sits 13th heading into Friday's Round of 16 in the 2006 Columbia 300 Classic at AMF Babylon Lanes.

"The first block (Thursday) I used six different balls and didn't bring any of those in for the second block," said Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.). "Today I bowled with a completely different ball that I didn’t use yesterday."

The six-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist used a Brunswick Ultimate Inferno Friday, winning his first eight matches to move up to 10th. His streak finally ended with a 224-192 loss to Brian Himmler (Cincinnati) in the position round.

"I didn't score very well. I won eight in a row because everyone bowled 180 against me. I can usually beat that score," Koivuniemi said. "This house is so different pair to pair. That's why I chose that ball and just tried to stay out of trouble."

Koivuniemi averaged 210.55 in his nine games while his opponents averaged just 183.56. He had just two games over 200 bowled against him.

Still leading the field is Ryan Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.), who went 6-3 Friday morning. Moving into second after going 7-2 was Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas). Pinfall carried over from Thursday's qualifying, and bowlers receive 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 bonus pins for each tie in the round robin format.

Earning the final spot in tonight's Round of 16 was Brian Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio).

Get a Grip

Ryan Shafer

Personalized grips that just arrived this week were the difference for Ryan Shafer Thursday in leading the Round of 64 in the 2006 Columbia 300 Classic.

The Horseheads, N.Y., native averaged 228.86 over his final seven games at AMF Babylon Lanes to maintain his lead after the first seven games, finishing with a 3,245 14-game pinfall.

"What helped was my new grips don't grab as much," said Shafer. "They are little more slippery and the ball comes off easier. Vise Grips made these personalized grips just for me. They are clear grips with nubs and they work great."

Shafer will take a decided advantage into Friday's round robin match play where all pinfall from Thursday's qualifying carries over. He has traditionally been successful in the round robin format.

"I think if I start out good, I just really concentrate on keeping it going because every pin matters," Shafer said. "I think I stay motivated."

Joe Ciccone (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished second with 3,214 while Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) finished third with 3,200.

Wes Malott (Argyle, Texas), ranked No. 1 in the 2006-07 PBA World Point Rankings, finished fourth with 3,175.

Earning the final spot in match play was Jack Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.), who finished 32nd with 2,906. He edged out PBA Hall of Famer Dave Ferraro, who finished three pins behind Jurek. Ferraro came out of retirement to bowl in the event as he was given a Commissioner's Exemption.

  【PBA】 Beltway Classic 【Final】

The Kid Can Roll

Sean Rash

In less than a year, Sean Rash has gone from a struggling qualifier with a lot of potential to one of the top young bowlers on the Denny's PBA Tour.

Rash, who late last season became the first non-exempt bowler to win a Tour title, defeated PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 279-225, to win the 2006 Beltway Classic at AMF Country Club Lanes for his second career title.

The 24-year-old combined for 18 strikes in his final 19 frames over his semifinal and final matches, dominating the 30-time titlist Bohn in the title match.

Rash got a break in the semifinal against Danny Wiseman, falling behind after Wiseman struck in the first five frames while Rash couldn't carry and started with four consecutive nine-spares. Wiseman missed a 10-pin in the 6th frame, however, and Rash responded with seven consecutive strikes to advance to the title match, 256-236.

"My first couple shots were pretty good in the first game. After I threw a bad shot in the 4th frame I told myself to regroup, get one break and see what happens. I just believed in what I was doing and took advantage of the opportunity I got," said Rash (Wichita, Kan.). "I bowled two great bowlers. Parker's a Hall of Famer and Danny will be someday. When you're bowling those two guys you can't think about bowling them, you have to bowl the lanes. You can't control what they do."

In last February's West Virginia Championship, Rash advanced to the field of 64 through the Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, then became the first qualifier to win a title, earning an exemption for the 2006-07 season.

On Sunday, Rash struck in the first six frames of the title match, opening up a nearly insurmountable lead as Bohn struck in just two of the first six frames. A strike in the 9th frame wrapped up the win for Rash.

Bohn advanced to the title match with a 222-206 win over Chris Loschetter. After a 7-10 split and open in the 5th frame, Bohn had a turkey to take over the lead. Loschetter had a chance to take back the lead with a strike in the 9th, but the 10-pin stood up. Bohn struck with his first ball in the 10th to advance to the title match.

Rash earned $25,000 and an exemption for the 2007-08 season. Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) took home $13,000 for second, Loschetter (Avon, Ohio) earned $6,500 for third and Wiseman (Baltimore) earned $5,500 for fourth.
