【PBA】 USBC Masters 【Final】 Kent Be Stopped
Doug Kent Doug Kent became the first third-seed in history to win a USBC Masters as he won three matches Sunday to capture the 2006 USBC Masters at the Wisconsin Exposition Center. Kent knocked off top-seed Jack Jurek in the title match, 277-230, to win his second career Masters title and his second Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Major title. The Newark, N.Y., native was unstoppable in the title match, overcoming an early deficit by striking nine consecutive times after opening the match with two spares. The key in that stretch was a late break in the 6th frame when the headpin came across the deck and barely knocked over the 10-pin. Kent earned a two-season Denny's PBA Tour exemption with the win along with $100,000. "It's an honor to be in the company of so many great bowlers who have won this tournament, and it's an honor to be in that category," said Kent, who captured his eighth career Denny's PBA Tour title. "The two-year exemption for me is big because I've kind of been in the middle of the pack the last couple years." Jurek, who had started the match with four consecutive strikes, let Kent back in with spares in the 5th and 6th frames. He bounced back with strikes in the 7th and 8th, but a 1-2-4-10 washout in the 10th all but ended the match. Kent advanced to the title match with a 246-190 win over amateur George Lambert IV (Hamilton, Ontario), who was making his first appearance in a PBA championship round. In the first match, fourth-seed Tommy Jones had a chance to beat Kent with a strike on his first shot in the 10th, but he left a 2-pin. The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year then struck to tie Kent at 248 through 12 frames which sent the match to a one-ball, sudden-death roll-off. Kent, as the higher seed, elected to bowl first and rolled a nine count. Jones then left a 2-4-8-10 split giving Kent the 9-6 win. Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) earned $50,000 for his second place finish while Lambert earned $25,000 for third and Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) won $15,000 for fourth.

Just Jack
Jack Jurek After finishing 49th out of the 498 bowlers in qualifing in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters, Jack Jurek was not given much of a chance to make any noise in match play. After sweeping through match play with wins over five fellow Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour exempt bowlers, Jurek has the best chance to take home the $100,000 and a two-season exemption on the Denny's PBA Tour that comes with the Masters title by capturing the top-seed for Sunday's stepladder finals. Jurek solidified his position with a 679-577 win over 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones in the fourth round of the winners bracket. The matches were decided by the total pinfall in three games. "The match was surprisingly not close," said Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.). "Luckily for me I caught a pair of lanes that Tommy wasn't able to get a good ball reaction on. I was able to stay steady throughout the match. He fished around and fortunately for me, he didn't find what he wanted." Jurek followed up the win by topping amateur George Lambert IV (Hamilton, Ontario) 695-654 in a three-game roll off for Sunday's top seed. Lambert made plenty of noise himself, knocking off three PBA exempt bowlers, including Sunday's No. 3 seed Doug Kent (Newark, N.Y.), 714-632. Kent rebounded from his loss by eliminating Pete Weber, 720-646, to qualify for Sunday's finals. After falling to Jurek, Jones survived a second Friday meeting with PBA all-time Tour titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. After topping Williams, 701-678, in an earlier winners bracket match, Jones posted a 785-689 win, this time in the losers bracket. |

Legends Set to Duke it Out
Norm Duke If anyone is up for the challenge of slowing down Walter Ray Williams Jr., it's Norm Duke. Duke, who finished second in last season's USBC Masters, won his first two matches Thursday night and will face Williams in a winners bracket match Friday in the 2006 USBC Masters at AMF Bowlero Lanes. Williams is coming off a win in last month's Dydo Japan Cup 2006, which gave him his Denny's PBA Tour record-breaking 42nd career title. "Walter Ray is bowling as good right now as any man on the planet," Duke (Clermont, Fla.) said. "I can think of easier tasks than to go out and tackle him, but if someone's got to do it, pick me." Duke, who was 19th after three rounds of qualifying, trailed early in his first match. Daniel Patterson took the early lead, 463-426, after the first two games of the three-game match based on total pinfall. The 23-time titlist made a statement in game three, however, reeling off 10 consecutive strikes on his way to a 289, and a 715-688 match win. In his second match, Duke defeated Art Brown, 637-551, an amateur who also made the championship round in last year's Masters. Williams, meanwhile, defeated Michael Kaul, 765-596, in his first match, and Kevin Bandrowski, 660-626, in his second match. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas), a 20-time winner on the now-defunct Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA), stayed undefeated with wins over seven-time Tour titlist Steve Jaros and six-time titlist Mika Koivuniemi. Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), the first woman to earn a full-season exemption on the Denny's PBA Tour, won her first match over No. 4 seed John Nolen. She fell in her second match, 739-614, to Doug Kent, before being eliminated with a 635-596 loss to Mark Clark. Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) stayed alive, bouncing back to win two matches after losing her first match. Johnson was the first woman to qualify for a Denny's PBA Tour event in 2004.
【PBA】 USBC Masters 【Round 3】 Kulick Passes First Test
Kelly Kulick In her first Denny's PBA Tour event since becoming the first woman to earn a full-season exemption, Kelly Kulick is proving she belongs. Kulick won a one-game roll-off over 2003-04 PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Johnson, 210-156, to advance to match play in the 2006 USBC Masters, the first of four Major events this season. The two tied for 63rd with a 3,129 15-game pinfall after three days of qualifying. The original field of 497 was cut to 124 last night, and those 124 bowled an additional five games Thursday morning. Kulick advances to double elimination match play which starts today at 4 p.m. ET, and features the top 63 from qualifying plus defending champion Mike Scroggins. The 29-year-old from Union, N.J., became the first woman to earn an exemption when she finished sixth in the Denny's PBA Tour Tour Trials last June. This week's event does not feature the all-exempt format as it is an open field. She will make her debut in the all-exempt format in next week's 2006 Motor City Classic in Taylor, Mich. The 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year Bill O'Neill led qualifying with 3,436. The 25-year-old is looking for his first career Denny's PBA Tour title. "I haven't had much success at the Masters in past. This is the first time I've made the first cut and the first time I've made match play so it's nice to be able to bounce back," O'Neill (Levittown, Pa.) said. "The tournament is just beginning now so I have to stay focused and bowl a little better. It's still one shot at a time but whoever I'm bowling is going to be a good bowler so I have to be at the top of my game." O'Neill finished 193rd in his first USBC Masters in 2004 and 242nd last season. Two other women advanced to match play. Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), who was the first woman to qualify for a Tour event in 2004 and finished second in a Tour event in 2005, finished 11th with 3,321. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (N. Richland Hills, Texas) finished 25th with 3,247. |

Billy the Kid
Bill O'Neill With title No. 42 off his back after last month's Dydo Japan Cup 2006 win, Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) is able to bowl without the pressure of becoming the career Denny's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titles leader. With the career title chase no longer on his mind, the 47-year-old looked to take control of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters Wednesday in Milwaukee by firing a 2,317 10-game pinfall in the event's qualifying rounds. It was 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year Bill O'Neill (Levittown, Pa.), however, who stole the show. O'Neill finished with 2,391 after the fourth and final block of Wednesday's qualifying overtaking the lead from the legend Williams. One of the "Young Guns" on Tour, O'Neill posted scores of 227, 199, 226, 270 and 256 in Wednesday's five-game block. O'Neill takes the top spot into Thursday's final round of qualifying consisting of the top 124 bowlers of the original field of 498. They will bowl five games before being cut down to the top 63 bowlers plus defending champion Mike Scroggins. "Every time I hit the pocket, I struck. When everything is going that well and the ball reaction is pretty good, it's hard not to strike," said O'Neill. "I made all my spares, so that doesn't hurt either. I had a pretty big two last games, just finding the pocket and knocking the pins over." Williams began the day with a 235, added a 290 and 246 before ending the day with a 210 and 233. Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), the first-ever female exempt bowler, finished 108th with a 2,053 while Billy Oatman (Chicago), the first-ever African-American exempt bowler, missed the cut by 33 pins with a 2,002. The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) threw a 2,237 to finish ninth while Norm Duke, the 2005-06 Denny's PBA World Points Rankings leader and 2005 USBC Masters runner-up, rolled a 2,159 to finish 33rd.

Kretzer Cruises
Brian Kretzer Brian Kretzer knows he has a long way to go, but he'll gladly take his lead after the first day of the 2006 USBC Masters, the first Major event of the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour. Kretzer fired a 1,221 five-game pinfall Tuesday to lead the 497-bowler field after the first of three days of qualifying. "It's nice to get as many pins as you can the first couple days. They don't mean a whole lot once you get to match play, but at least it takes some pressure off," Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio) said. "You're going to draw a great bowler in the top 64 no matter what, so it doesn't matter where you finish. I'm just doing my job and trying to get in the top 63." The field will be cut to the top 124 bowlers after Wednesday's five games. Those 124 will the bowl an additional five games Thursday, after which the top 63 will join defending champion Mike Scroggins in double elimination match play, as Scroggins earned a bye through qualifying. Kretzer, who has not won a Denny's PBA Tour title in 96 career events, had games of 269 in game three and 279 in game four. Two bowlers making history this week stayed within reach of the cut after day one. Though this week's event does not feature an all-exempt field, Kelly Kulick and Billy Oatman are bowling in their first events as the first female and African-American exempt bowlers, respectively. Oatman (Chicago) is 110th with 1,033 and Kulick (Union, N.J) is 172nd with 1,006. The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) fired the day's only 300 game. He finished fifth with 1,172. The 2005-06 PBA Rookie of the Year, Bill O'Neill (Levittown, Pa.) is second with 1,213.
