【PBA】 News Oatman Gains Exemption
Billy Oatman Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer announced today Billy Oatman will replace injured Ritchie Allen as one of 58 exempt bowlers on the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour. Oatman becomes the first-ever African-American to earn a full-season Tour exemption. Oatman finished 11th in the 2006 Denny's PBA Tour Trials in June, one spot shy of an exemption as the top 10 finishers in the 140-bowler field earned season-long exemptions. Oatman, who became a PBA member just days prior to the qualifying event, finished 34 pins behind 10th-place Del Ballard Jr. The Chicago native will replace Allen, who suffered a stress fracture in the ring finger of his bowling hand. Allen will defer his exemption, which he earned by winning the 2006 Motel 6 Phoenix Classic, until 2007-08. The 28-year-old, who was exempt for the first time in 2005-06, won his second career title and finished 31st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. "I am ecstatic. I'm sorry for Ritchie, but at the same time I am happy for myself and for Del because it worked out for all three of us to stay exempt and not step on each others' toes," Oatman said. "I'm just glad I got the chance. This is something I have always dreamed about. I feel like an NBA player who just got drafted." The 40-year-old Oatman, who has yet to bowl in a Denny's PBA Tour event as a PBA member, will look to become the Tour's second African-American title winner. George Branham III won five titles in his career including the prestigious Firestone Tournament of Champions in 1993. Several other African-Americans have competed on Tour, including Willie Willis who won a National Resident Pro Championship, which did not count as a Tour title. The Denny's PBA Tour switched to an all-exempt format starting with the 2004-05 season. Earlier this summer, Kelly Kulick became the first woman to earn a full-season exemption when she finished sixth in the Denny's PBA Tour Trials. Oatman's first event will be the season-opening 2006 USBC Masters Oct. 22-29 at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwatosa, Wis. |

【JPBA】 DyDo Japan Cup 【TV決勝】 A New Standard
Walter Ray Williams Jr. All Pete Weber could do was shake his head and smile as Walter Ray Williams Jr. was steamrolling his way into the history books. Williams nearly topped off his Denny's PBA Tour record-breaking 42nd career title with the 17th nationally televised 300 game in Tour history. He settled for a dominating 289-236 win over Weber to take home the Dydo Japan Cup 2006 crown, and now stands alone in the record books. The PBA Hall of Famer tied Earl Anthony's all-time record back in March with a win over Weber in the title match of the 2006 Denny's World Championship. Weber again succumbed to his nemesis on Sunday, as Williams moved to 5-0 in title matches against Weber in a rivalry that has spanned more than 20 years. "It feels unbelievably good. To be in this position is beyond my wildest dreams," said Williams (Ocala, Fla.). "I'm very proud of what I've done, but hopefully it won't stop here." Sunday's title match started off in dramatic fashion, as the two great champions traded strikes through the first five frames. Weber was the first to falter, leaving two pins in the sixth frame. That was all the room a fired up and determined Williams needed, as he continued to strike at will. After wrapping up the match with his ninth consecutive strike, all that remained in question was whether Williams could put together his first career televised 300 game. After striking with his first ball in the 10th, however, Williams left a solid 7-pin on his next shot. "I threw a good shot but the pins were a little stubborn," said Williams. "I knew coming in I had my hands full and it would take 260 or 270 to win. Pete bowled great early on, but fortunately for me he threw a couple bad shots and I just kept striking." The 46-year-old had struggled to get to win No. 41, taking seven TV appearances and nearly two years to pull even with Anthony. He has come on strong of late, however, as it took him just three events to win his 42nd. Williams was just a Ryan Shafer strike away from not advancing to the title match. In the semifinal match of the stepladder finals, the second-seeded Williams watched as Shafer needed a strike in the 10th frame to move on to the title game. The third seed left a split, however, to give Williams the 215-195 win. Weber came in as the top seed and was given an automatic berth in the title match. A win would have given the PBA Hall of Famer his 33rd career title and made him the second bowler in history to collect over $3 million in career earnings. Instead, it was Williams who became the first bowler in history to go over the $4 million mark with his $50,000 prize check. In other matches Sunday, Mike Machuga won a four-bowler shootout to start the day, firing a 235 to defeat Chris Barnes (215), Steve Jaros (213) and Wes Malott (193). Machuga then defeated Patrick Healey Jr., 253-189, before falling to Robert Smith, 222-200. Smith moved on to face Ryan Shafer, who advanced to the semifinal with a 191-172 win. Notes - The victory marks Williams' second career Japan Cup title, his first since 1991. - Williams is now 8-2 against Weber on TV, including a perfect 5-0 record in title matches. - After bowling against each other in a televised title match just three times in their first 22 years on Tour together, Weber and Williams have now met in the title match in two of the last four events. - Williams is the only PBA player to have bowled in all 22 Japan Cup events.

Pete Weber All it took was a little pep talk from his wife, and Pete Weber is back in familiar territory. Weber posted a 13-3 record in round robin match play Saturday to earn the top seed for Sunday's stepladder finals in the Dydo Japan Cup 2006. The 32-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist and two-time Japan Cup winner started match play slow Friday morning, but he kicked into another gear after a talk with his wife, Tracy. "I really bowled well all four rounds of match play, but after the first round I was kind of upset with myself," said Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), who went just 4-4 in his first eight games. "Tracy said 'pull your head out and bowl like you know how to bowl.' I told her I'd have a better attitude and I did the last three squads, and I bowled better. I'm really happy with the way I bowled." After the pep talk, the PBA Hall of Famer posted a 19-5 record, moving into the top spot for the first time after the 30th game. He held his lead through the final two games to earn an automatic berth in the title match, finishing with a 23-9 record and a 7,994 32-game pinfall. If Weber is to win his first Japan Cup since 1993, he might have to get past long-time nemesis Walter Ray Williams Jr. The 41-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist earned the second seed with a 20-11-1 record and 7,945 total pinfall. Williams (Ocala, Fla.) will be looking to break Earl Anthony's all-time Tour titles record Sunday. He defeated Weber in the title match of the Denny's World Championship last March for his 41st title. Ryan Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.) finished third while 2002 Japan Cup champion Robert Smith (Captain Cook, Hawaii) finished fourth. Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas) finished fifth and will face the winner of a four-bowler shootout Sunday in the first stepladder match. Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas), Wes Malott (Dallas Texas), Steve Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.) and Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) finished sixth through ninth, respectively, and will participate in the shootout. Machuga struck out in the 10th frame to defeat Norm Duke, 237-236, in the final match of the evening to knock Duke out of the championship round.

【JPBA】 DyDo Japan Cup 【ラウンドロビン・2】 Back on Top
Robert Smith Robert Smith's recent move to Hawaii had nothing to do with bowling, but the move is proving to make a big difference in his game. Smith, who has struggled with a back injury for years, has found a shiatsu massage therapist in Hawaii who has worked wonders on his injury. The six-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist is finally healthy and it shows as he took the lead Friday after the first two rounds of match play in the Dydo Japan Cup 2006. The California native moved to Captain Cook, Hawaii in April. He is looking to capture his second career Japan Cup title after winning the event in 2002. "So far, so good. I've been without pain for the last few months which has been nice. It's still a long process, but hopefully he can continue to help me" said Smith of his massage therapist. "Last year I made the finals here but it didn't turn out well so hopefully I'll get another shot at it." Smith finished eighth in last years' nine-bowler finals. He went 13-3 in his 16 matches Friday to take the lead with a 4,156 16-game pinfall. Bowlers receive 30 bonus pins for each win and 15 for each tie. Also going 13-3 on the day was 41-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist Walter Ray Williams Jr. The Ocala, Fla., resident, who is second with 4,106, is looking to break Earl Anthony's all-time titles record. Wes Malott (Dallas, Texas) is third after going 11-5, Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas) is fourth after posting a 10-5-1 record and 2003 Japan Cup winner Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) is fifth after going 10-6. Two-time defending Japan Cup champion and 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) is 18th with 3,607 after posting a 6-9-1 record.

Though his lead after 20 games of qualifying will not carry into round robin match play, Michael Fagan still feels good about his chances in the Dydo Japan Cup 2006. Fagan, looking for his first career Denny's PBA Tour title, finished qualifying with a 4,767 20-game pinfall Thursday at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel. He leads a group of 32 bowlers into round robin match play Friday, where scores start from scratch. The 25-year-old from Greenlawn, N.Y., averaged 240.25 in his eight games Thursday to maintain his lead over Wes Malott (Dallas, Texas). Fagan started and ended his block with his two highest games, firing a 278 to start the day and finishing with a 268. "I tried a different ball today to see what it would do and I feel like I have a couple different options for match play," said Fagan. "I feel comfortable and hopefully I can continue the success I've had in match play." Malott, who made the championship round in his first career Japan Cup last season, remained second with 4,655. Ryan Shafer (Horseheads, N.Y.) is third with 4,604. "We don't bowl this format on the PBA Tour and it requires a little different strategy," said Malott of the qualifying scores not carrying over into match play. "This year I know what the strategy is and I'm going to take advantage of it." The two-time defending Japan Cup champion and reigning PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) had a solid day, moving up from 20th at the start of the day to seventh. He is looking to become just the second bowler to win three consecutive Japan Cup crowns. Parker Bohn III (Jackson, N.J.), the only man to accomplish that feat, missed the cut, as did Doug Kent (Newark, N.Y.). The brothers-in-law were the only two of the 20 PBA players who failed to advance to match play. |

A little more than 24 hours after landing in Tokyo, Michael Fagan made a strong debut in the Dydo Japan Cup 2006, leading the field after the first 12 games of qualifying Wednesday at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Bowling Center. The event marks the season opener of the 2006-07 Denny's PBA Tour, and features 20 of the top PBA bowlers against the best of the Japan Professional Bowlers Association (JPBA) and Korean Professional Bowlers Association (KPBA). Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.), who finished 18th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings to receive an invitation to the event, averaged 237.08 in finishing with a 2,845 12-game pinfall. The top 16 bowlers in the PBA World Point Rankings receive an all-expenses paid trip to the event. In addition, four bowlers are invited to attend, but are required to pay their own expenses. The 25-year-old flew straight to Japan from Germany, where he was bowling in another tournament. "I wanted to come here and bowl no matter what, and it was worth the money," said Fagan, who is still looking for his first Denny's PBA Tour title. "I've always wanted to come here and bowl, especially since Tommy (Jones) started doing so well. Our styles are similar so it motivated me to come here and do as well as he has." Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), the 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year, is the two-time defending Japan Cup champion. He won in 2004 for his first career title which launched a two-year run that has seen him dominate the Tour, winning eight titles in two seasons. Jones is 20th after day one with 2,577. Wes Malott (Dallas, Texas) is second with 2,826, while Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) is third with 2,715. Chris Loschetter (Avon, Ohio), who is also appearing in his first Japan Cup, is 10th with 2,625. Loschetter fired the day's only 300 game. The field of 144 bowlers was cut to the top 72, who advance to Thursday's additional eight-game qualifying round. The top 32 will then advance to round robin match play. All 20 PBA players survived the first cut. The nine-bowler finals will take Sunday, Sept. 24 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The championship round will air tape-delayed on ESPN Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. ET. Notes "I never had a second thought," said Loschetter about coming to Japan. "I knew I would come whether I had to pay or not." Though he started slow, averaging 201.25 over his first four games, Loschetter picked things up later in the block. "The lanes were tougher than I expected after practice (Tuesday) and I didn't bowl well this morning but I was fortunate to have the one big game," said Loschetter. "I bowled very well (in the second block). I didn't carry very well, but I had enough big games to get by. The lanes were tough and if you didn't have the right ball it was hard to carry." Loschetter qualified for the Japan Cup in his first season as an exempt bowler. "I think everyone here has been very friendly and very helpful," said Loschetter of his first trip to Japan. "It's a very nice center and I'm happy I've done well. I'm looking forward to hopefully making the top 32 and moving on in this competition. "It's definitely a prestigious event and it's an honor to be here," Loschetter continued. "The PBA only sends the best of the best so to be here is definitely an honor. Last year I set a goal for myself and that was to qualify for this tournament and I accomplished that goal so I'm very happy."
