  【PBA】 GEICO Classic 【Final】

New York, New York

Doug Kent

New York native Doug Kent captured his second career Denny's PBA Tour title in his home state, as he defeated Norm Duke, 222-201, in the title match of the 2006 GEICO Classic at AMF Thruway Lanes.

Kent, from nearby Newark, N.Y., won his 7th career Tour title and his first since the 2002 Empire State Classic in Latham, N.Y.

"It's been a long year and a half for me," said Kent, who earned $40,000 and an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season. "I feel like I've been bowling well but just haven't been winning matches. It's the best feeling to do it in front of my friends and family."

After starting the title match with spares in the three of the first four frames, Kent strung together four straight strikes while Duke opened in the 2nd and 7th frames.

Duke needed to strike out in the 10th to force Kent to get eight on his first ball of the 10th, but the 22-time titlist struck and spared to give Kent the win.

Kent advanced to the title match with a 227-213 win over his brother-in-law, PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III. After three consecutive strikes in frames 7-9, Kent only needed a mark and eight pins in the 10th frame to shut out Bohn. A spare and a strike gave him his first berth in a title match since 2004. Bohn fell to 0-4 on television this season.

In the second semifinal, both Duke and Edwards started the match with six straight strikes. Duke took a one-pin lead in the 7th frame as Edwards had an eight-spare and Duke had a nine-spare. Duke then struck on his next five shots, locking out Edwards by striking out in the 10th frame to win the match, 279-265.

Duke earned $20,000 for 2nd, his third runner-up finish of the season. Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.) and Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) took home $10,000 apiece for the 3rd and 4th place finishes, respectively.

Notes
Kent used a Hammer Road Hawg in the first match and a Hammer Vibe in the second match.

All in the Family

Doug Kent

Sunday's championship round in the 2006 GEICO Classic will be a family affair.

Brothers-in-law Doug Kent and Parker Bohn III will face each other in the semifinals after each won their round of 8 matches Friday night at AMF Thruway Lanes.

Kent, from nearby Newark, N.Y., defeated 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.), four-games-to-one, to advance to his first championship round since the 2004 Uniroyal Tire Classic.

"It's been a tough two years for me. It's familiar but unfamiliar territory," said Kent, who owns six Tour titles but has not won since 2002. "This has been a breakthrough week for me so I'm just going to try and keep it going."

Kent, who used a Hammer Hawg Wild, averaged 231.40 in his five games against Allen.

Bohn (Jackson, N.J.), a PBA Hall of Famer who owns 30 Tour titles, defeated Wes Malott (Austin, Texas), 4-0. Bohn will be making his fourth championship round appearance of the season but is still looking for his first title.

Mike Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.) defeated Steve Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.), 4-0, to advance to his first championship round since 2004. Edwards will be looking to break the longest title drought among exempt bowlers on Tour, as he has not won since the 1994 IOF Foresters Bowling For Miracles Open, a span of 240 events.

Edwards will face 22-time Tour titlist Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.), who defeated Tim Criss (Bel Air, Md.), 4-3. Duke will be making his fifth television appearance of the season but he has yet to capture a title.

All About Allen

Patrick Allen

Patrick Allen led Thursday's round of 64 in the 2006 GEICO Classic at AMF Thruway Lanes, but the 2005 PBA Player of the Year is hardly happy about it.

Allen will look to end a string of bad luck by top seeds in match play, after leading the round of 64 with a 3,409 14-game pinfall.

None of the top seeds in the 12 standard Denny's PBA Tour events have won a title this season and just twice has the top seed advanced to a championship round.

"You're setting yourself up for disaster. I've got nothing to gain and everything to lose. You're the number one seed so you're supposed to win" said Allen, who will face Lockport, N.Y., native Brad Angelo in the round of 32. "Unfortunately, it doesn't usually work out that way. I have to bowl Brad, too, so that's no necessarily a good thing. He's got the home crowd behind him."

Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) has had a successful season by most players' standards, winning a title and making five championship rounds to tie for the Tour lead. But after winning three titles and leading the Tour in points last season, he's struggled on television - going 2-4 - and is 7th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings.

Allen, who used Ebonite's The One, averaged 233.43 over his final seven games, including a 278 in the second game of the block.

Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.) finished 2nd with 3,395. The 22-time Tour titlist has also enjoyed a solid season with four championship rounds, but is still looking for his first title of the season.

Angelo, one of five bowlers in the field from the Buffalo area, fired a 247 in his final game to earn the final spot in match play. Locals Tom Baker (Buffalo, N.Y.), Jack Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) and 19-year-old amateur Ryan Ciminelli (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) all advanced to the round of 32.

Commissioner's Exemption Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), who last season became the first woman to advance to a championship round in a Tour event, just missed the cut. She finished 34th with 3,109, just five pins shy of the top 32.

Jaros Leads Strikefest

Steve Jaros

There's something about the end of the Denny's PBA Tour season that brings out the best in Steve Jaros.

Jaros averaged 255.86 with a 1,791 seven-game pinfall Thursday to lead the first of two qualifying blocks in the round of 64 in the 2006 GEICO Classic at AMF Thruway Lanes.

Jaros struggled for much of the season in 2004-05, but came on strong over the final four weeks to secure an exemption. He capped off the season by winning the 2005 Dexter Tournament of Champions to earn a two-season exemption. Jaros has been off to a slow start this season as well, as he sits 41st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings.

"I threw a lot of strikes today. This is one of our higher scoring oil patterns after bowling on our most difficult pattern last week. I think everyone is really sharp," said Jaros, who finished 20th in last week's 63rd U.S. Open. "I turned it around last season about this time so maybe there's something about the timing."

Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.), who used a Dyno Thane Black Vendetta throughout the day, had his lowest score of the round in game four, a 228. He fired games of 279 in game two, 289 in game six and finished with a 258 in game seven, to hold off 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen, who fired a 279 in the final game. Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) finished 2nd with 1,775.

Local amateur Ryan Ciminelli (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), who led Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round to earn a spot in the round of 64, was 3rd with 1,758. The 19-year-old fired a 289 in his seventh game.

Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), the Commissioner's Exemption for the event, was 11th with 1,653. Johnson made history last season, finishing 2nd in the 2005 Banquet Open, becoming the first woman to make the championship round of a Tour event.

Eight is Great

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones leaped to the front of the line in the race for the 2006 PBA Player of the Year award after winning his first career Major event, the 63rd U.S. Open Sunday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Jones, who leads the Tour with four victories this season, defeated top-seeded Ryan Shafer in the title match, 237-223, clinching the $100,000 top prize and securing a spot on the Denny's PBA Tour through the 2008-09 season.

"You go out and do your best at every tournament. You want to have the chance to win. That's what you bowl for," said Jones, the No. 2 seed who converted a 4-pin in the 10th frame to capture his eighth Tour win over the last two seasons.

Shafer, who finished 2nd in a Major for the third time in his career, applied pressure late by striking in frames 7-9, but it wasn't enough.

Jones, who used an Ebonite "The One" strike ball, dispatched of Michael Fagan, the No. 4 seed searching for his first career title, in the semifinal, 231-226. Jones struck in frames 6-9 to help seal the win after opening on a 1-2-4-10 split in the 5th.

In the first stepladder match, Fagan defeated Robert Smith, looking for his second career U.S. Open title, 216-214. Fagan converted the 6-7-10 split to start the 10th then followed with an eight count. Smith, a six-time Tour title winner, needed to strike to start his 10th, but instead left the 3-6-10.

Shafer earned $50,000 for his 2nd place finish while Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) earned $25,000 for 3rd. Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) took home $15,000 for 4th.

Notes: Jones is the first bowler to win the U.S. Open as anything other than the top seed since Dave Husted won the 1996 U.S. Open as the No. 3 seed.

With the win, Jones completed the first part of "The Jackson Hewitt $1,000,000 Challenge." If he can win the 2006 Denny's World Championship and the 2006 Dexter Tournament of Champions, he will take home an additional $1,000,000 in prize.

Final Four Set

Ryan Shafer defeated Tommy Jones, 213-170, in the 24th and final game of match play Saturday night to earn the top seed for Sunday's finals in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Shafer, who owns four career Denny's PBA Tour titles, will be looking for his first career Major title. He has two career runner-up finishes in Major events.

The Elmira, N.Y., native, who used a Storm Paradigm, led the field in last season's 62nd U.S. Open after the first round of match play, but finished 10th overall.

"I wasn't going to let that happen again," said Shafer, whose last title came 48 events ago in the 2003 Empire State Open. "I'm very happy with myself. I've had a lot of near misses in Majors so this means a lot to me."

Jones went into the position round leading Shafer by 58 pins, but the win gave Shafer 30 bonus pins, and an automatic berth in Sunday's stepladder finals title match.

Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who has won seven Tour titles in the last two seasons, will be looking for his first career Major. He is making his first career appearance in a Major championship round.

Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) will be looking for his first career title. He earned the No. 3 seed for Sunday by defeating Mike DeVaney in the final match, 216-167. Fagan will face Robert Smith, who earned the No. 4 seed with a win over Mike Machuga in the final match, 207-194. Smith will be looking for his second U.S. Open as he won in 2000.

Shafer Takes Over Top Spot

Ryan Shafer

Ryan Shafer went 6-2 in match play to finish Friday night with a 7,824 35-game pinfall to take the lead after the first of three round robin match play rounds in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Shafer, who owns four career Denny's PBA Tour titles, was in the same position in last season's 62nd U.S. Open, when he led after the first eight games of match play. He finished 10th.

The Elmira, N.Y., native was 5th heading into match play Friday night, but he won his first four matches, averaging 240.50.

"I look forward to this event every year because I think this is our most important tournament of the season," said Shafer, who finished 6th in the 2003 U.S. Open. "It's a true test. I work so hard coming into this event, and if I don't bowl well I'm really disappointed. I grind it out more this week than I do the other weeks."

Shafer overtook Tour rookie Sean Rash in the last game, despite falling to Steve Jaros, 213-188. Rash led the field through the first six games going 6-0, but he lost to Shafer, 226-200, in game seven, then fell to Mike Machuga, 203-154, in game eight.

Shafer used two different Storm balls during match play, a Trifecta and a Paradigm.

Rash, who won last week's 2006 West Virginia Championship, is 2nd with 7,811. Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who led the field after 27 games of qualifying, is 3rd with 7,728 after going 4-4 in match play.

Defending U.S. Open champion Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) had the best record of the night, going 7-1 to move up to 9th. Barnes started match play 21st.

Down to 24

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones continued his march toward his first career appearance in a Denny's PBA Tour Major championship round, as he padded his lead Friday in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Jones led the field after the first 18 games of qualifying, then averaged 221.56 in Friday's final nine games of qualifying to keep the lead heading into tonight's round robin match play.

"It's irrelevant," Jones said of leading. "We still have 24 games of match play left plus bonus pins so anyone still bowling can get there. But it's good to have a cushion."

Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) has a Tour-high three titles this season after leading to Tour with four last season, yet does not own a Major title. He finished with a 5,949 27-game pinfall.

"The lanes were a little different today," said Jones, who used Ebonite's The One. "I got pretty lucky a couple games. I moved right and made the right choice. I never really had any bad games."

Sean Rash (Wichita Kan.) is 2nd with 5,908. The 23-year-old won last week's 2006 West Virginia Championship to become the first non-exempt bowler to win a Tour title.

Mike DeVaney (Escondido, Calif.), who shot one the day's two 300 games, is 3rd with 5,875.

PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., who is looking to win his 41st career title and tie Earl Anthony for most career Tour titles, is tied for 9th with 5,743. Williams (Ocala, Fla.) is looking to make his fifth straight U.S. Open championship round.

Defending champion Chris Barnes fired a 215 in his final game Friday to jump from 26th to 21st. Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) earned the 24th and final spot in match play with 5,588.

Jones Leads; Williams in the Hunt

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones owns seven career Denny's PBA Tour titles, but he's still looking for his first Major victory.

He's one step closer to winning his first Major, as he led qualifying in the 63rd U.S. Open with a 3,955 18-game pinfall after averaging 217.33 in his final six-game set Thursday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Jones, 27-years-old from Simpsonville, S.C., has won a Tour-best three titles this season and could solidify his position in the 2006 PBA Player of the Year race with a victory this week.

"There's no pressure," Jones, who used an Ebonite "The One" on Thursday, said about the possibility of winning a Major. "You definitely want to win, but there's no pressure. This is the one you want to win if you're going to win a Major though. The format is the longest and it's the toughest conditions."

Two-time title winner Jason Hurd (Titusville, Fla.) was 2nd with 3,949 while non-exempt PBA member Ritchie Wolfe (Vienna, Va.) was 3rd with 3,935. Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.) looking for his 23rd career title was 4th with 3,933 and Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) was 5th with 3,926.

PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) was 8th with 3,823 and is looking to make his fifth straight U.S. Open final round. Defending champion Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) was 30th with 3,717.

Rick Steelsmith and Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., natives who are rooming together this week, tied for 115th with 3,536. The two tied a one-game roll-off, 203-203, and Waliczek won a sudden-death roll-off, 20-19, to advance to the next round.T

Leading the Herd

Jason Hurd

Jason Hurd finished with a 2,660 12-game pinfall Wednesday to lead the 461-bowler field after two days of qualifying in the 63rd U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier, the second of four Majors on the PBA Tour.

Hurd is in need of a good showing this week. The Titusville, Fla., native enjoyed a career-season in 2004-05, winning his first career singles title and finishing 12th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings.

This season, however, Hurd is just 44th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with six events remaining to earn points toward an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season. The cut-line for an exemption is currently 37th.

"It's getting down to crunch time," said Hurd, who finished 17th in last season's U.S. Open. "There are still a lot of games. Every pin counts in this tournament. I need to come in tomorrow like it's the first block and try to get every pin I can get."

Steve Rogers (Bourbonnais, Ill.) is 2nd with 2,659, while Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.), owner of 22 career Tour titles, is 3rd with 2,652.

Tommy Jones (Greenville, S.C.), who already has three titles to his credit this season, is 4th with 2,651, while Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) rounds out the top five with 2,650.

Sean Rash (Wichita, Kan.), who won last week's 2006 West Virginia Championship, is 6th with 2,633.

Wolfe Leads the Pack

Ritchie Wolfe

Ritchie Wolfe, looking for his first career Denny's PBA Tour title, leads the 460-bowler field with a 1,411 six-game pinfall after the first round of the 63rd U.S. Open Tuesday at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Wolfe, who shot games of 253 and 280 to start his day, is no stranger to strong performances in the Tour's Major events. The 38-year-old from Vienna, Va., finished tied for 12th in the 2004 World Championship and 23rd in the 62nd U.S. Open.

Wolfe, who used an Ebonite "V2," was exempt for the 2004-05 Tour season, but finished 43rd in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings and missed an exemption for this season by four places.

Brian Valenta (Lockport, Ill.) is 2nd with 1,390. Valenta, who uses a two-handed delivery, finished 20th in last season's 62nd U.S. Open.

"This format and this pattern really fit my game well," Valenta said. "I just had a good line today. I threw the ball well and just stuck around and let it come to me."

Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) is 3rd with 1,380 and is looking to win his second title of the season. Steve Rogers (Bourbonnais, Ill.) is 4th with 1,362 while David Haynes (Las Vegas) is 5th with 1,359.

Defending champion Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) is tied for 38th with 1,264. PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) looking to win his fourth U.S. Open, is tied for 40th with 1,263.

Rash Rules West Virginia

Sean Rash

Sean Rash used timely spare shooting and two clutch strikes to defeat Mike DeVaney in the title match of the 2006 West Virginia Championship, 194-178, Sunday at Emerson Lanes.

The win makes Rash, a 23-year-old rookie, the first non-exempt PBA member to win a Denny's PBA Tour event. He earned $40,000 for the win and an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season.

Rash avoided disaster by picking up the 2-10 split in the 8th frame, then struck twice to start the 10th. DeVaney left a 10-pin on his first shot in the 10th to clinch Rash's victory in his first career televised finals appearance.

"You dream of this as a little kid in juniors and then in college," said Rash of winning his first Tour title. "To be the best, you have to beat the best."

Rash, who used Brunswick Inferno and Ultimate Inferno strike balls, started the match by converting the 2-4-10 split. DeVaney, looking for his second career title, opened in the 5th and Rash responded by converting the 1-2-4-6-10 washout in the 6th.

Rash (Wichita, Kan.) struck nine times in the semifinals to defeat Mike Scroggins, 246-194, and advance to the title match. Scroggins, making back-to-back telecasts for the second time this season, converted five multi-pin spares.

DeVaney beat Patrick Healey Jr. in their semifinal, 226-194. DeVaney (Temecula, Calif.) took advantage of Healey's slow start, which saw him strike just once and open in the 3rd frame, by stringing together three strikes in frames 2-4.

DeVaney earned $20,000 for 2nd while Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) and Healey (Flower Mound, Texas) earned $10,000 apiece for the respective 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Notes: Rash is the first bowler to win a Tour title in his first career TV appearance since Ritchie Allen won the 2002 Dallas Open.

Rash Reaches Finals

Sean Rash

One bowler was looking to make his first career telecast while another was looking to tie the most elusive record in Denny's PBA Tour history.

In the end, rookie Sean Rash defeated 40-time Tour title winner Walter Ray Williams Jr., four-games-to-three, in the 2006 West Virginia Championship round of 8 Friday at Emerson Lanes.

Rash, appearing in his second standard event of the season, beat Williams 212-206 in the deciding game, overcoming an open in the 7th. The 23-year-old rebounded with strikes in the 8th and 9th while Williams (Ocala, Fla.) failed to strike after the 7th, converting three straight single-pin spares.

"I have nothing to lose by bowling qualifiers every week and bowling some Majors," said Rash, who used a Brunswick "Inferno" during his match. "I've gotten support from guys on Tour already. Chris Barnes is definitely a mentor for me."

Down 2-0, Rash (Wichita, Kan.) won three straight games from the PBA Hall of Famer, including a 236-228 game five win in which he needed to convert the 2-10 split in the 10th frame.

Williams, looking to tie Earl Anthony's record of 41 career Tour titles, opened the match with a 279-258 game-one win, then increased his lead with a 248-219 game-two victory.

Rash will face lefty Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas), who advanced to his fifth telecast of the season after sweeping Robert Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), 4-0.

Mike DeVaney (Temecula, Calif.) came back from an 0-2 deficit and defeated Mike Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.), 4-2. DeVaney will face Patrick Healey Jr. in the semifinals after Healey (Flower Mound, Texas) dispatched of PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), 4-2.

Notes: Rash is a former Team USA member, having bowled for the squad in 2002, '04 and '05. He bowled at Wichita State University where he was a two-time All-American.

Rash has bowled doubles events with Barnes in the past. He mentioned that Barnes has given him advice on how to play the lanes and what to expect from his opponents in match play.

Third Time's a Charm?

Wes Malott

Wes Malott, already enjoying a career year on the Denny's PBA Tour, will enter match play as the top seed as he led the 2006 West Virginia Championship round of 64 with a 3,197 14-game pinfall Thursday at Emerson Lanes.

Malott, who won his first career title in the 2005 Mile High Classic earlier this season, was 7th after the first seven-game session but averaged 231.57 in his second seven-game block to lead qualifying.

"Coming into this week I haven't been feeling well. I haven't felt well getting the ball out of my hand," said Malott, who has led qualifying in three standard events this season. "I made a point to practice more Wednesday night for two and a half hours."

The 29-year-old from Austin, Texas, used a Columbia "Action" on Friday and will face Jason Couch (Clermont, Fla.) in the best-of-seven-games match play round of 32. Couch needed to work overtime to advance to Friday's action.

The 13-time titlist defeated Joe Ciccone (Buffalo, N.Y.) in a one-game roll-off, 214-201, after the two tied for 32nd with 2,932. Couch would have avoided the extra game if not for a seven count on his final shot in regulation after Ciccone shot 268 in his final game.

PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., still looking for his first televised finals appearance of the season, finished 5th with 3,112. The 40-time title winner from Ocala, Fla., will face Mika Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) in the round of 32.

Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), looking for his 33rd career Tour title, finished 11th with 3,050 and will take on 22-time titlist Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.) in the opening match play round. Duke finished qualifying 22nd with 2,988.

Fast Eddie

Mike Edwards

With the 2005-06 Denny's PBA Tour season heading into the home stretch, Mike Edwards needs a big week.

Edwards put himself in position to make a big move in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, firing a 1,611 seven-game pinfall Thursday to lead the first session of the round of 64 in the 2006 West Virginia Championship at Emerson Lanes.

The 22-season Tour veteran came into the week 49th in the 2005-06 World Point Rankings, with the cut line for an exemption for 2006-07 currently at 38th. Edwards, who started the season with two top-15 finishes in the first three weeks, has struggled with a right wrist injury and has failed to make a round of 32 in the last eight events.

"My wrist felt good today for a change and everything fell into place," said Edwards (Tulsa, Okla.). "(My wrist) hasn't felt good in eight weeks. I don't know what's going to happen, but that's why I haven't made match play in eight weeks. I know I'm not that bad."

Edwards, who used Ebonite's "The Big One," took the lead immediately with a 278 in game one. He followed up with a 247 in game two, and averaged 217.20 over the final five games to maintain the lead.

Eric Forkel, who advanced to the round of 64 through Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, is 2nd with 1,606. The Las Vegas native leads the race for an exemption among non-exempt PBA members as he is 57th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings.

Mike Scroggins, enjoying his best season on Tour, is 3rd with 1,605. Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) has already surpassed his career-high in season earnings with $163,620.

Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas) is 4th with 1,597, while Tour-rookie Bill O'Neill (Levittown, Pa.) and Brian Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio) are tied for 5th with 1,583.

Jones Wins Another

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones won his third Denny's PBA Tour title of the season as he defeated Mike Scroggins in the title match of the 2006 Bayer Atlanta Classic, 224-191, Sunday at Brunswick Zone Norcross.

Jones, who won $40,000, leads the Tour with three victories. The 27-year-old from Simpsonville, S.C., now has seven titles over the past two seasons.

"I was very fortunate," said Jones, who capitalized on a Scroggins open 6th frame with strikes in the 8th and 9th. "Scroggins bowled better than me, but I caught all the breaks."

Jones jumped out to a quick lead, converting a single pin spare to start the match before striking twice. Scroggins struck on his first shot, but was forced to convert spares in frames 2-4.

Jones, who took over the lead in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with the win, advanced to his ninth career title match after he beat the 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen, 235-177, in the semifinals. Jones bowled a clean game, including seven strikes, while Allen opened in the 3rd and 9th frames.

Scroggins defeated Michael Fagan, making his second career televised finals appearance, 209-196, in the first semifinal. The left-hander trailed for the first eight frames, but took advantage of Fagan's open in the 9th by striking on his next three shots, including a double in the 10th.

Scroggins earned $20,000 for his 2nd place finish while Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) and Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.) earned $10,000 apiece for their respective 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Notes: Patrick Allen, who leads the Tour with five televised finals appearances this season, fouled in the 3rd frame of his match against Tommy Jones. He stuck on the approach while trying to convert a 2-4-7-10 split.

Tommy Jones has made the title match in nine of his 12 career televised finals appearances.

Today marked the first time since the PBA moved to its current match play format in 2002-03 that the top two seeds in standard event met in a title match. Jones, the No. 2 seed, defeated Scroggins, who made his second standard telecast as a top seed.

Jones Wins Battle of "Young Guns"

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones swept Wes Malott in a battle of the Denny's PBA Tour's "Young Guns," four-games-to-none, Friday to advance to the championship round in the 2006 Bayer Atlanta Classic at Brunswick Zone Norcross.

Jones, 27, and Malott, 29, have taken over the Tour this season. Malott captured his first career title in November and is 1st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. Jones, meanwhile, is 3rd in the World Point Rankings and has won two titles this season, giving him six in the last two seasons.

On Friday, Jones started the match on fire, winning game one, 278-200. Both bowlers struggled over the next two games, each shooting under 200. Jones managed to squeak out wins of 184-178 in game two and 197-188 in game three before moving on to his fourth championship round this season with a 223-212 win in game four.

"It seems like every time I bowl Wes I get a lot of good breaks and he gets the bad breaks," said Jones, who will look to start a new television winning streak after having his 15-match TV winning streak snapped in December. "It's just another show, it's not about streaks. I'm just trying to win a title and get some points to secure myself in the top four."

Jones, who used Ebonite's The One, will face 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen, who defeated Amleto Monacelli (Venezuela), 4-3. Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) will be looking for his second title of the season.

The other semifinal features Mike Scroggins taking on Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.). Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) fired a 278 in game six to clinch a 4-2 win over Doug Kent (Newark, N.Y.). Scroggins, 2nd in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, is making his fourth television appearance of the season. Fagan defeated Tony Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.), 4-2, and is making his first TV appearance since 2003.

Moving on to Match Play

Mike Scroggins

Mike Scroggins will enter match play as the top seed for the second time this season after he led the 2006 Bayer Atlanta Classic round of 64 with a 3,211 14-game pinfall Thursday at Brunswick Zone Norcross.

Scroggins, the only top seed to advance to a televised final this season when he finished 3rd in the 2005 Empire State Classic, shot 269 in his 14th and final game to erase a 33-pin deficit behind six-time Tour title winner Tommy Jones.

"Being the top seed means you out-bowled everyone in qualifying, so I think you have an advantage," Scroggins said of his chances in match play. "Plus, you get your choice of lanes to start matches. I don't have to worry about it. I get the choice the whole time, even if I make the show."

The left-hander from Amarillo, Texas, used a Track Robo Rule and a Storm Trifecta during the second session.

Scroggins will face fellow Texan D.J. Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas) in the round of 32. Archer, ranked 8th after the first seven-game block, finished 32nd with 2,913.

Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) was 2nd with 3,176 while Tore Torgersen (Norway) was 3rd with 3,137. Torgersen, making his first standard match play appearance of the season, will face 2003 PBA Rookie of the Year Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) in the round of 32, after Angelo finished 30th with 2,916.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) was 5th with 3,118. The 40-time Tour title winner, looking to make his first televised finals of the season, finished 3rd in the 2005 Atlanta Classic.

Robert Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was 6th with 3,113 and shot the day's lone 300 game.

Don't Mess With Texas

Mike Scroggins

After waking up from a dream first half of the 2005-06 Denny's PBA Tour season to some tough times lately, Mike Scroggins appears to be back on track.

Scroggins fired a 290 in game six which propelled him to the lead after the first session of the round of 64 Thursday with a 1,625 seven-game pinfall in the 2006 Bayer Atlanta Classic at Brunswick Zone Norcross.

Scroggins led the Tour in points, earnings and average after the first half, capturing his first career Major title along the way in the 2005 USBC Masters. So far, he has struggled in the second half, making match play just once in four events.

"I think having the break took me off my regular schedule and broke up my momentum, and it's taken me a couple weeks to get back on track," said Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas), currently 4th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. "I'm making better shots and I'm striking when I hit the pocket this week. In Phoenix (two weeks ago), I bowled well but I just could not knock down 10 pins."

Scroggins, who used a Track Robo Rule on Friday, shot just 182 in game seven, his lowest score of the day. But it was just enough to hold off Walter Ray Williams Jr., who fired a 258 to finish 2nd with 1,618.

Williams (Ocala, Fla.) is looking for his 41st career Tour title which would tie him with Earl Anthony for the all-time Tour record. Williams finished 3rd in last season's 2005 Atlanta Classic.

Three other bowlers from Texas besides Scroggins are in the top 10. Wes Malott (Austin, Texas), 1st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, is 3rd with 1,614. D.J. Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas) is 8th with 1,559 while Paul Fleming (Bedford, Texas) is 9th with 1,545.

Dino Castillo, from Carrollton, Texas, is not far behind in 13th with 1,518.
