Wolfe Wins His Second

Mike Wolfe

Mike Wolfe won his second career Denny's PBA Tour title, defeating Chris Collins in the title match of the 2005 Empire State Classic, 268-214, Sunday at Spare Time - Clifton Park.

The 29-year-old and five-year Tour veteran began the title match with two strikes and took advantage of Collins' open 2nd frame, when he failed to convert a 3-9-10 split.

"[Collins'] open early in the game gave me momentum and I was able to relax a bit," said Wolfe, who marked in all but one frame on the day. "There's still room for improvement and I need to take it as it goes. This is a good feeling going into the break."

Wolfe, who earned the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Tour season, struck in frames 4-10 and never let Collins, making his first career telecast, into the match.

Wolfe, who used a Brunswick Zone Classic and Ebonite The One, defeated Mike Scroggins, 236-187, to advance to the title match. Scroggins, the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings leader, left two splits over the final four frames.

Collins defeated Jack Jurek, looking to win his first Tour title in over 10 years, in their semifinal match, 243-234. Collins capitalized on a Jurek open in the 7th by striking three times in the 9th and 10th frames.

Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) earned $20,000 for 2nd while Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) and Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) earned $10,000 apiece for their respective 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Patience Is a Virtue

Jack Jurek

Jack Jurek proved Friday that good things come to those who wait.

Jurek advanced to his first Denny's PBA Tour championship round in almost seven years as he defeated Ryan Shafer, four-games-to-two, in the round of 8 in the 2005 Empire State Classic at Spare Time - Clifton Park.

Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) will be looking for his first title in 10 years, eight months and 23 days, which would be the third-longest stretch between titles in Tour history.

"It's been 20 years that I've been out here. Even though it hasn't been great, there's a love I have for being out here," said Jurek, who earned his exemption for 2005-06 by leading last season's PBA Central Region Point Rankings. "It was starting to be a big question as to whether I could get back to this level. It's been so long since I was on TV I think it was still in black and white."

Jurek knocked off two fellow New Yorkers on his way to the finals in Shafer (Elmira, N.Y.) and Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) in the round of 32.

Jurek will face Chris Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) in the first semifinal. Collins will be making his first career television appearance as he came back from an 0-3 deficit to defeat Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.), 4-3. Machuga had won his first 11 games in match play until Collins beat him in four-straight games.

Mike Wolfe (New Albany, Ind.) advanced to his second championship round of the season by defeating Patrick Healey Jr. (Flower Mound, Texas), 4-1. He will face Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) in the second semifinal. Scroggins, who defeated Tommy Delutz Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.), 4-2, takes over the top spot in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with Friday's win.

Notes
Had Machuga defeated Collins in game four, he would have become just the third bowler in Denny's PBA Tour history to go 12-0 in match play. Randy Pedersen first accomplished the feat in the 2002 Pepsi Open, while Chris Hayden matched the feat in the 2003 VIA Bowling Open.

Instead, Collins became the first bowler this season to come back from an 0-3 deficit to win a match.

In the Bag
Jurek used the Columbia Action as well as the Morich Mayhem. Scroggins used the Ebonite V2 Power and the Track Delta Rule, while Collins used the Ebonite Overtime. Wolfe used Ebonite's The One and the Brunswick Classic Zone.

Scroggins Strikes Way to Lead

Mike Scroggins

Mike Scroggins is in the midst of a dream season on the Denny's PBA Tour, and he's showing no signs of slowing down.

Scroggins will be the top seed in the 2005 Empire State Classic match play round of 32 after he led the round of 64 with a 3,408 14-game pinfall, including a 252.29 average in his second seven-game block, Thursday at Spare Time - Clifton Park.

"I've been throwing [the ball] really well all eight weeks," said Scroggins, who shot 248 or better in five of seven games Thursday evening, including a 289 in his final game of the night. "You just need to ride the wave as long as you can."

The left-hander from Amarillo, Texas, already has a career-high $126,000 in season earnings, thanks in part to his 2005 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters win earlier this season. He entered the week with a 228.76 average, tops on Tour.

Scroggins, who used a Track Arsenal, opened the second session with games of 212, 248, 279, 257 and 266. He will face amateur Steve Wagoner (Broadalbin, N.Y.) in the best-of-seven games match play round of 32. Wagoner qualified 32nd with 3,064.

Michael Haugen Jr. (Las Vegas) was 2nd with 3,300 and will face Randy Weiss (Irmo, S.C.) in the round of 32. Looking for his second title of the season, Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) was 3rd with 3,295, and will face Dino Castillo (Carrollton, Texas), who was 30th with 3,065.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.) finished 9th with 3,232 and will be looking to add to his 40 career titles. A win this week would tie him with lefty Earl Anthony for the most titles in Tour history.

Choogs Chuggin' Along

Mike Machuga

Mike Machuga fired a 243 in game seven to take the overall lead with a 1,691 seven-game pinfall after the first of two qualifying sessions Thursday in the round of 64 in the 2005 Empire State Classic at Spare Time - Clifton Park.

Machuga (Erie, Pa.), who won his first Denny's PBA Tour career title earlier this season, averaged 241.57 over his seven games.

"I've been in the position of leading the squad many times and it's a horrible feeling to put it on cruise control and watch the whole field lap you," said Machuga, referring to the second seven-game session which takes place tonight. "There's a lot of pride and prestige in leading the tournament. The higher you qualify the lower seed you get to bowl so I want to lead this thing."

Machuga, using the Brunswick Vapor Zone, got off to a fast start on Thursday, shooting 257, 278 and 276 in the first three games to take the early lead. He held the lead with a 224 and 266 in games four and five, but a 147 in game six dropped him down to 4th. He rebounded with a 243 to take the lead.

Three of the top five bowlers are from New York state. Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.), Brian Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio) and Michael Fagan (Greenlawn, N.Y.), all looking for the first career titles, sit 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Gary Shultis (Levittown, N.Y.), who advanced to the round of 64 through Wednesday's Denny's PBA Tour Qualifying Round, fired a 300 in game one and is currently 5th with 1,659. Fagan had the day's other 300 game, in game four.

  【PBA】 The Final Frame

Reyes Conquers "The Final Frame"

Tony Reyes

Tony Reyes earned an exemption for the 2006-07 Denny's Professional Bowlers Association PBA Tour season by winning "The Final Frame presented by the Denny's PBA Tour," a special event held Sunday at ABC West Lanes.

Reyes defeated Tore Torgersen (Norway), seven-strikes-to-five, in a 12-frame match without spare attempts. He earns $10,000 for the win.

"I am absolutely relieved," said Reyes (San Bruno, Calif.), who came into the event 53rd in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. "It's been one heck of a first half of the season and I'm just going to try and bounce back and have a good second half. This is a dream right now."

The four finalists were matched up with one of four "coaches," Denny's PBA Tour exempt players Jason Couch, Danny Wiseman, Tommy Jones and Norm Duke. The first time a player failed to strike, they called upon their coach to re-take the shot.

Neither Reyes, coached by Couch, nor Torgersen, coached by Wiseman, struck with their first shot. Couch could not convert for Reyes but Wiseman struck to give Torgersen the early lead. Reyes came back with strikes in the 2nd and 4th-6th frames, however, to take a 4-1 the lead.

Torgersen battled back and trailed just 6-5 after 10 frames, but Reyes struck in the 11th frame while Torgersen missed his 11th shot, giving Reyes the win.

Reyes advanced to the title match by winning the semifinal with six strikes, while Torgersen struck five times. Reyes did not strike until the 5th frame, but struck with his final five shots to advance to the title match.

Joe Ciccone, coached by Duke, and Rick Steelsmith, coached by Jones, had four strikes each and were eliminated.

The event started with 50 bowlers taking one shot each, with any bowler not striking being eliminated from the competition. The elimination rounds continued until just four bowlers remained.

With seven bowlers remaining in the fourth round, Steelsmith, Torgersen, Reyes and Ciccone all struck, while Tom Daugherty, Nathan Bohr and Chris Collins failed to strike and were eliminated.

Couch takes home $3,000, while Torgersen and Wiseman earned $2,000 for their runner-up finish. Ciccone, Duke, Steelsmith and Jones earned $1,000 apiece.

Allen Adds Another One

Patrick Allen

The defending PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen earned his sixth career Denny's PBA Tour title with a 247-218 win over PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker in the title match of the 2005 Keystone State Championship Sunday at ABC West Lanes.

Allen jumped out to an early lead using an Ebonite The One, striking on his first five shots while Baker was forced to convert three spares over the same span.

"I wanted to get out as fast as I could, and fortunately I kept the clamp down," said Allen, who won $40,000. "That match could have gone the other way if I didn't carry those strikes."

Baker, 51-years-old from King, N.C., tried to put pressure on Allen with strikes in the 7th and 8th frames, but the left-hander matched him both times.

Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) defeated Mika Koivuniemi, 226-200, in the semifinals to advance to his 10th career title match in 15 championship round appearances. With the match tied through four frames, Koivuniemi failed to strike in frames 5-9 and opened twice, while Allen had two strikes and three spares.

The loss dropped Koivuniemi to 11-2 all-time against lefties on TV, with both losses coming to Allen, who won three titles and earned $350,740 last season.

Baker defeated Mike Scroggins, 225-188, in their semifinal match. Baker stayed clean with six spares and six strikes while Scroggins opened three times through the first six frames.

Baker earned $20,000 for 2nd while Koivuniemi (Hartland, Mich.) and Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) won $10,000 apiece for their respective 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Baker Bullies Competition

Tom Baker

Tom Baker upset 23-time Denny's PBA Tour title winner Brian Voss, four-games-to-three, in the 2005 Keystone State Championship round of 8 Friday at ABC West Lanes.

Baker, whose last finals appearance came when he won the 2004 PBA World Championship, lost a sudden-death roll-off, 10-9, to even Friday's match at 3-3.

The 10-time Tour title winner struck on his first five shots of the final game while Voss (Alpharetta, Ga.), a PBA Hall of Famer, spared his first three frames.

"To beat Brian Voss in a game seven is a pretty hard task," said Baker, who won the deciding game, 221-180, while throwing a Brunswick Vapor Zone. "If I make good shots, good things are going to happen."

Baker (King, N.C.) faced stiff competition all day. He beat 22-time Tour winner Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.), 4-2, in the round of 32 and defeated fellow PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III (Jackson, N.J.), 4-2, in the round of 16.

In other matches, Mika Koivuniemi, the 2004 PBA Player of the Year from Hartland, Mich., defeated 40-time Tour title winner Walter Ray Williams Jr. (Ocala, Fla.), 4-2. Koivuniemi averaged 264 in his four wins, including a 300-247 game two victory.

Koivuniemi will face the 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen (Tarrytown, N.Y.) in Sunday's semifinal after Allen defeated six-time Tour title winner Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), 4-0. Koivuniemi was 3-0 on TV against Allen before the lefty beat him in the semifinals of the 62nd U.S. Open last season.

Left-hander Mike Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) will look to win his second title of the season after defeating last week's 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic winner and 32-time Tour title winner Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), 4-1. Scroggins will face Baker in the semifinals.

Baker Sweeps Post-Season Awards

Tom Baker

PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker just made history. The PBA announced today Baker won both the 2005 PBA Senior Player of the Year award and the 2005 Senior Rookie of the Year award. He is the first bowler to earn both awards, voted on by PBA membership, in the same season.

Baker, 51-years-old from King, N.C., won his first career PBA Senior Tour title in just his fourth event bowled when he captured the 2005 PBA Senior U.S. Open at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, Mich. His 226.97 season average set a new PBA Senior Tour record. Baker also led the Tour with $40,050 in season earnings and was 2nd in points (171,034) and match play appearances (10).

"It's just a great feeling to win both awards," said Baker, who has nearly $1.5 million in career PBA earnings. "Anytime you're the Player of the Year it's something special, especially when it's voted on by your peers. You know they respect what youユ've done and that really means a lot."

The only Denny's PBA Tour exempt bowler eligible for the PBA Senior Tour, Baker tallied eight top-10 finishes during the 2005 PBA Senior Tour season, reaching the title match on three occasions. Besides his PBA Senior Tour accomplishments, he owns 10 Denny's PBA Tour titles, including the 2004 Denny's World Championship, which gave him a five-season Tour exemption through the 2008-09 season.

Baker edged Bob Glass (Lawrence, Kan.) for PBA Senior Player of the Year honors. Glass, looking to win his PBA-record fourth Senior Player of the Year award, defended his title in last season's 2005 PBA Senior Chillicothe Open and led the PBA Senior Tour points list at season's end with 183,626 over 11 events.

Roger LeClair (Clackamas, Ore.) was the runner-up in PBA Senior Rookie of the Year voting. LeClair finished 7th in points (96,762) and 8th in earnings ($15,450) with his best finish coming in the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm, where he was 2nd to Gene Vincent.

Kretzer Crafty

Brian Kretzer

Brian Kretzer is trying to make life a little easier for himself.

Kretzer, who had to qualify for the Denny's PBA Tour through the Denny's PBA Tour Trials two years in a row, averaged 237.57 over his second seven-game set Thursday to finish as the overall leader in the round of 64 in the 2005 Keystone State Championship at ABC West Lanes.

Kretzer, who finished 44th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings, five spots shy of an exemption, is currently 28th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. He finished with a 3,297 14-game pinfall and goes into Friday's match play round of 32 as the top seed.

"We knew the scores would be low today and this (oil) pattern is supposed to be low," said Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio), who used a Morich Shock and Awe during qualifying. "I got out of the gate okay and suddenly I'm way in the number and still had 10 games to go. There was never really an anxious moment."

Kretzer was 4th after the first seven game session, then averaged 225.33 in his first three games of the second block before a 289 in game 10 solidified his place among the top.

Kretzer will face Rick Lawrence (Celina, Texas) in the round of 32 as Lawrence finished 32nd with 2,923. Lawrence beat out Commissioner's Exemption Bob Learn Jr. (Erie, Pa.) for the final spot by three pins.

Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), who won last week's 2005 Bowlers Paradise.com Classic for his 32nd career Tour title, finished 2nd with 3,283 and will face Tommy Delutz Jr. (Flushing, N.Y.), who finished 31st with 2,924.

Voss On Top Again

Brian Voss

Brian Voss averaged 237.43 over his seven-game block Thursday lead the first of two qualifying sessions in the round of 64 of the 2005 Keystone State Championship at ABC West Lanes.

Voss, a PBA Hall of Famer who also led after seven games last week, got off to a nearly perfect start, firing a 299 in game one. He averaged just 208 over the next three games before scores of 254, 268 and 217 pushed him into the lead with a 1,662 seven-game pinfall.

"You can have the best mechanics in the world, but it all comes down to confidence and it's not something you can turn on and off," said Voss (Alpharetta, Ga.), who had his first top-15 finish of the season last week, but is just 43rd in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings. "I've been through a lot of these stages in my 24 years. It's early in the season and the second half is where all the money is. If I can just finish the first half strong I'll be okay."

Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.), who won last week's 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic for his 32nd career Denny's PBA Tour title, is 2nd with 1,652. Weber also came out of the gates fast with a 279 in game one.

Chris Johnson (Garland, Texas), the 2004 PBA Rookie of the Year, is 3rd with 1,650 while Brian Kretzer (Dayton, Ohio) is 4th with 1,634. Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who has already captured two titles this season, rounds out the top five with 1,622.

  【PBA】 BowlersParadise.com Classic 【Final】

Weber Wins for His Dad

Pete Weber

Pete Weber had some help from above on Sunday.

With thoughts of his father on his mind, the PBA Hall of Famer snapped a 26-event winless streak which dated back to Feb. 2004, and defeated Ryan Shafer in the title match of the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic, 189-186, at Stardust Bowl I.

"This is pure enjoyment. I'm enjoying this just as much as Dad is up [in heaven]...thanks Dad," an emotional Weber said, referring to his PBA Hall of Fame father Dick Weber, who passed away in Feb. 2005.

Weber almost missed his chance to collect the $40,000 and his 32nd career Tour title. Holding the lead, Weber opened in the 8th frame, allowing Shafer back into the match. The four-time title winner struck in the 8th frame, but a disastrous 4-7-10 split in the 9th put Weber back in command. A spare and six pins in the 10th sealed the win for Weber.

The title match had started slowly, with Weber striking just once in the first five frames and Shafer opening twice.

Weber swtiched between the Storm Paradigm and Fired Up strike balls during the title match.

Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) advanced to the title match by defeating Tommy Jones, 207-167, in the first semifinal.

Jones, aiming to extend a 15-match winning streak on TV, struck just twice in the first nine frames while Weber pulled away with strikes in frames 6-9.

Shafer defeated Brad Angelo, looking for his first career Tour title, 210-196, in their semifinal. Shafer stayed clean through nine frames, striking five times, while Angelo opened twice over the first four frames.

Shafer (Elmira, N.Y.) earned $20,000 for 2nd while Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) and Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) earned $10,000 apiece for their respective 3rd and 4th place finishes.

Notes
Sunday marked the first time four PBA Rookie of the Year award winners were on the same telecast since the 2001 Villages Open. That show featured Jason Couch (1992 PBA ROY), Mike Aulby (1979), Chris Barnes (1998) and Pete Weber (1980). Couch defeated Barnes for the title, 223-201.

It's fitting that Weber won this week, as the 2004 BowlersParadise.com Classic was the final Tour event his father had bowled in. Dick received the Commissioner's Exemption for the event last season, and he bowled Chris Barnes in the round of 64.

Welcome Back Mr. Weber

Pete Weber

Pete Weber has waited nearly a year to honor his late father, Dick, with his 32nd career Denny's PBA Tour title.

He'll get a chance Sunday as he advanced to his first televised championship round since February, 2004 as he defeated Joe Ciccone, four-games-to-three, in the round of 8 Friday in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic at Stardust Bowl I.

Weber had to bowl the maximum 21 games on Friday to advance to the finals, winning all three of his matches, 4-3.

"Everything that has happened in the last year, from about Christmas to Valentine's Day...it was not a good year for the Weber family," said Weber, whose legendary Hall of Fame father, Dick, passed away in February. "It'd be nice to win again. It's been such a long time."

The 31-time Tour titlist and PBA Hall of Famer is fourth on the all-time titles list, but has not won since the 61st U.S. Open in 2004.

Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) will face Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.), who defeated Robert Smith (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), 4-3. Jones, who has two titles this season, will be looking to extend his 15-game winning streak on television, which is one shy of tying the all-time PBA record.

Brad Angelo defeated last week's 2005 Chicago Classic champion Jason Couch (Clermont, Fla.), 4-0, to advance to his second championship round of the season. Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) will face fellow New Yorker Ryan Shafer (Elmira, N.Y.) in the second semifinal. Shafer knocked off Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.), who is No. 1 in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, 4-3.

Archer Nabs Top Seed

D.J. Archer

D.J. Archer, looking to win his first career Denny's PBA Tour title, led the round of 64 in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic with a 3,265 14-game pinfall Thursday at Stardust Bowl I.

Archer, advancing to match play for the second time this season, averaged 225.86 in his second seven-game set. After shooting 188 in his second game of the evening session, Archer surged with scores of 247, 269 and 221 in games three through five.

"I feel really good. I haven't bowled this well all year," said Archer, whose best career finish is 4th in the 2003 Masters. "Coming into today, I felt comfortable from the get go."

Archer, who used a Morich Shock and Awe strike ball, was 2nd after the first qualifying block.

Voss the Boss of First Squad

Brian Voss

He's a Professional Bowlers Association PBA Hall of Famer and one of the Tour's all-time best, but even Brian Voss knows he can't get away with not practicing.

Voss, who's had a slow start to the 2005-06 season, practiced for an estimated 11 hours and 90 games over the last two days and the hard work is already paying dividends.

The 23-year Tour veteran with 23 career Denny's PBA Tour titles leads the field after the first of two qualifying blocks with a 1,703 seven-game pinfall Thursday in the 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic at Stardust Bowl I.

Voss came into the week 48th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings with three events remaining in the first half of the season. Last season, Voss led the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings through the first half.

"Terrible," said Voss (Alpharetta, Ga.), when asked to sum up his season so far. "I didn't bowl as much as I should have this summer. These guys are the best in the world. You've just go to get to work sometimes."

Voss, who worked to get his timing and balance back the last two days, started Thursday with a 239, then averaged 261.33 over his next three games. He finished his session with scores of 230, 226 and 224 to hold onto the lead.

"My timing was impeccable but by balance wasn't good, or as good as it could've been," said Voss, who used the Elite Bowling PBA Cheetah ball during the squad. "It's just a good start. There's no celebrating yet. It'd be nice to bowl well here since BowlersParadise.com is my sponsor. It'd be nice to have a good showing here."

D.J. Archer (Mineral Wells, Texas), who is 55th in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, is 2nd with 1,684. Brad Angelo (Lockport, N.Y.) is 3rd with 1,656 and Mike Machuga (Erie, Pa.) is 4th with 1,616, while 2005 USBC Masters winner Mike Scroggins rounds out the top five with 1,610.
