  【PBA】 Tulsa Champiinship 【Final】

Unstoppable

Tommy Jones

If there was any doubt Tommy Jones was the hottest bowler on the Denny's PBA Tour, all doubts have been laid to rest.

Jones defeated Wes Malott in the title match of the 2005 Tulsa Championship, 289-248, striking on his first 10 shots to capture his 6th career Tour title, the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 season.

"It was an unbelievable day. I had mixed emotions - not because of the 300 game - but because Wes is one of my best friends out here and he's looking for his first title," said Jones, whose bid for the 17th nationally televised perfect game in Denny's PBA Tour history was foiled by a 7-pin on his 11th shot. "I caught the breaks and he didn't."

The victory gives Jones four titles in the last seven Tour events, as well as back-to-back wins for the first time in his career. The 26-year-old won the Dydo Japan Cup in September and now has 15 consecutive wins on television, one shy of the Tour record set by Jim Pencak from 1989-91.

Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) advanced to the title match by defeating six-time Tour winner Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas), 236-213. Jones converted the 3-4-6-7 spare in the 5th frame and struck in four of his final five frames en route to his eighth career title match appearance.

In the other semifinal, Malott advanced to the title match by defeating Mike Wolfe (New Albany, Ind.) in their semifinal, 236-209. Malott struck seven times and marked in every frame while Wolfe failed to convert the "Big Four" (4-6-7-10) and the 7-10 splits in the 4th and 6th frames, respectively.

Malott (Austin, Texas) earned $20,000 for his 2nd place finish while Barnes and Wolfe earned $10,000 apiece for 3rd and 4th, respectively.

In the bag
Jones used the Ebonite Overtime for both his semifinal and final matches.

Jones Shooting for Six

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones will look to extend his 13-game television winning streak and win back-to-back titles for the first time in his career as he defeated PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson, four-games-to-one in the round of 8 Friday in the 2005 Tulsa Championship at The Lanes at Coffee Creek.

Jones, who won the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 in September, can pull within one of the all-time Tour record for consecutive wins on television by winning the title Sunday.

The Simpsonville, S.C., native jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Dickinson in their best-of-seven games match, then held off the Hall of Famer with a 231-206 win in game five.

"It was an honor to bowl a Hall of Famer of his caliber. To say I got to bowl against him is something I will always look back on and cherish," said Jones, who has won five career titles, all in the last 13 months. "A lot of (my recent success) has been due to making good shots and keeping my emotions in check. Hopefully that will continue."

The 62-year-old Dickinson (Edmond, Okla.) was a surprise finisher in the top eight. The eight-time Tour titlist and 11-time PBA Senior Tour titlist earned the Commissioner's Exemption for the event. He defeated Michael Haugen Jr. and Paul Fleming on his way to becoming the first Commissioner's Exemption to make the round of 8.

Jones will take on Chris Barnes (Flower Mound, Texas) in the first semifinal. Barnes defeated 22-time Tour titlist Norm Duke (Clermont, Fla.), 4-3, and will be looking for his seventh career title.

Mike Wolfe (New Albany, Ind.) will face Wes Malott (Austin, Texas) in the second match on Sunday. Wolfe defeated Mike DeVaney (Temecula, Calif.), 4-2.

In the Bag
Jones primarily used the Ebonite V2 Power in his round of 8 match against Dickinson. He also used the Ebonite OverTime.

Dickinson Making History

Gary Dickinson

PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson proved today that he's still got the skills to compete with the best in the business.

The 62-year-old from Edmond, Okla., became the first Commissioner's Exemption to make the round of 16 when he swept Michael Haugen Jr., four-games-to-none, Friday morning, then he topped himself by making the round of 8 with a 4-3 win over Paul Fleming.

Dickinson, who was just the second Commissioner's Exemption to appear in the round of 32, opened the day with a 254 in game one and a 259 in game two. He took a 3-0 lead with a 226-204 win in game three, then held off Haugen, 227-225, to advance to face Paul Fleming in the round of 16.

Against Fleming, Dickinson jumped out to a 3-0 lead and stretched his winning streak to seven games, before Fleming stormed back to force a game seven. After averaging 251 over the first three games, Dickinson dropped to 213.67 over the next three games. He got back on track and moved on to face Tommy Jones in the round of 8 with a 258-221 win in game seven.

Dickinson's last Denny's PBA Tour title came in the 1983 B.P.A.A. U.S. Open when he defeated Steve Neff for his only career major Tour title.

Should Dickinson run the table and win this week, he would set a couple PBA records. At 62, Dickinson would top John Handegard as the oldest bowler to win a Denny's PBA Tour title. Handegard was 57 years old when he won the 1995 Northwest Classic in Kennewick, Wash.
Dickinson's win would also smash the record for longest span between titles. His U.S. Open win came 22 years, six months and 26 days ago, which would break Hugh Miller's old record of 12 years, two months and nine days between titles.

Clearly, Dickinson - who has won 11 PBA Senior Tour titles - would also become the oldest player ever to earn an exemption.

Top 32 Head to Match Play

Parker Bohn III

Two veteran Denny's PBA Tour left-handers took the top spots after 14 games of qualifying in the 2005 Tulsa Championship Thursday at The Lanes of Coffee Creek.

Parker Bohn III, ranked 5th all-time with 30 career Tour titles, earned the top seed heading into the best-of-seven-games match play round of 32 with a 3,456 14-game pinfall. Mike Scroggins, on Tour since 1990, finished 2nd with 3,310.

Bohn, a PBA Hall of Famer from Jackson, N.J., could tie Pete Weber (St. Ann, Mo.) for 4th on the all-time titles list with a victory this week.

"Pete and I have been going back and forth for quite some time," said Bohn, who averaged 237.3 in his second session after he averaged 256.4 in his first seven-game session. "I'd feel honored if I tie Pete Weber, but at the same time I don't think Pete is done winning and I sure hope [I'm] not done winning either."

Bohn will face the upstart Chris Loschetter (Olmstead Falls, Ohio) in the round of 32 after Loschetter, who was 2nd in the 2005 Denny's World Championship, finished with 3,045 and beat out three bowlers by just two pins each for the final match play spot.

Scroggins (Amarillo, Texas) averaged 231 over his final seven games and will face PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (Venezuela), who was 31st with 3,053, in the round of 32.The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 Dennyユs PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round live from the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla., Sunday, Oct. 30 at Noon CST.

In the Bag
Bohn had used Brunswick's Absolute Inferno and Vapor Zone in the first qualifying session. He began the second session with the Vapor Zone but felt he was leaving too many 7-pins over his first two games. Bohn then switched primarily to the Rampage for the rest of the round.

Notes
PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson became the first bowler who has received a Commissioner's Exemption to advance to the round of 32 after making his or her way through 14-games of qualifying in the round of 64.

Previously, Tim Penner advanced to the round of 32 as the Commissioner's Exemption in the 2004 Pepsi Open after defeating Steve Jaros, four-games-to-two, in the round of 64.

Bohn Off to Blazing Start

Parker Bohn III

After getting off to a slow start in each of the past two seasons, PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III showed he's ready to turn it around in 2005-06.

Bohn averaged 256.43 over his first seven games of qualifying Thursday to take a 94-pin lead after the first of two sessions of the round of 64 in the 2005 Tulsa Championship at the Lanes at Coffee Creek. The event is the first of the 2005-06 Denny's PBA Tour season.

The 42-year-old from Jackson, N.J., is 5th all-time with 30 career Denny's PBA Tour titles. He's struggled the last three seasons, however, winning just one title and enduring a span of 51 events between his 29th and 30th titles.

"Getting off to a good start this week would propel me forward, no question," said Bohn, who won the 2005 El Paso Classic last season on the Cheetah oil pattern which also is being used this week. "I've been one to come out on the strong side in the past but the last couple years my first couple weeks out of the gate have been sluggish...it's good knowing the things I've been working on are holding true to form."

Bohn, who finished 7th in the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 in September, started his day with a 228. He then averaged 270.8 over his next five games, including a 289 in games two and six. He struck on his last six shots of the day to finish with a 1,795 seven-game pinfall and a big lead over Michael Haugen Jr.(Las Vegas, Nevada) who is 2nd with 1,701.

In the Bag
Bohn started the day using the Brunswick Ultimate Inferno. Halfway through the first game, he began alternating between the Ultimate Inferno on one lane and the Absolute Inferno on the other lane. Midway through game seven, Bohn was on a 170 pace when he switched to the Rampage, finishing the game with six consecutive strikes.
