Tom Terrific

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones showed that his four PBA Tour victories last season were no fluke, as he defeated Norm Duke in the title match of the Dydo Japan Cup 2005, 222-215, successfully defending his title Sunday at the Tokyo Metro Gymnasium.

Unlike the 2004 Japan Cup, when Jones bowled just two matches for the crown, the 26 year old entered this year's final round seeded 5th and won five matches to earn the $50,000 top prize and his 5th career Tour title.

"Right now, it's hard to soak in. It was a long road with lots of matches," said Jones, who converted three multi-pin spares and struck seven times against Duke, the top seed. "I'm definitely a little tired, more mentally than physically."

Jones converted the 3-4-5 spare in the 8th before Duke, who won $25,000, struck in the 9th to keep things close. Jones clinched the win, however, with a strike and seven pins in the 10th frame.

Jones, who appeared in the Japan Cup title match for the third straight year, defeated three-time titlist Patrick Healey Jr., Flower Mound, Texas, in the semifinal, 201-180. Prior to that he dispatched the 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., 218-169 and the 2003 PBA Rookie of the Year Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., 191-166.

Jones, Mauldin, S.C., started his day with a 248-204 win over Korea's Park Jong Soo in the first stepladder match.

Sunday's final round began with Soo winning a four-bowler shootout. Soo shot 244 and defeated Parker Bohn III,

Jackson, N.J., who shot 214, Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., who shot 196 and Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, who shot 182.

The 2005-06 PBA Tour regular season begins with the 2005 PBA Tulsa Championship, Oct. 26-30, with the arena finals to be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla., on the University of Tulsa campus.

Notes:

The win does not give not Jones an exemption for the 2006-07 PBA Tour season. The Japan Cup is an invitational event and does not count towards the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings.

Over 3,000 fans packed the Tokyo Metro Gymnasium to watch the historical final rounds. This was the first arena finals event the JPBA has ever produced.

Jones was asked if Parker Bohn III needed to worry about someone breaking his record of four Japan Cup titles. "I have a feeling Parker's record is pretty safe. I think the guys will be gunning for me next year," Jones said.

Malott had a slow start in the shootout match, fouling in the 2nd frame and failing to mark until the 5th frame, when he tossed a strike. In response to the strike, Malott turned a playfully bowed to the crowed while a few of the PBA Tour pros gave him a standing ovation from the front rows.

Final Nine Set

Norm Duke

Norm Duke held on to the top spot and will be the No. 1 seed in Sunday's finals of the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 after he finished round robin match play with a 7,742 32-game pinfall (including bonus pins) and a 22-9-1 match play record.

The finalists were decided Saturday night with the final eight-game set of match play at the Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel Bowling Center.

Duke is the top seed in the championship round after he averaged 219.12 and went 6-2 in his final eight-game set of match play. Each match play victory was worth 30 bonus pins.

"In match play it is so important to win matches, but you're going to lose some. It's important to get every pin you can," said Duke. "So, I just stayed in it by using my ability to think the games through."

Patrick Healey Jr., Flower Mound, Texas, entered the final game in 4th place but used a 222-220 win over Patrick Allen to leap to the No. 2 seed for the finals. Allen, the 2005 PBA Player of the Year from Tarrytown, N.Y., went 21-10-1 in match play en route to the No. 3 seed.

The 2003 PBA Rookie of the Year Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., is the No. 4 seed while defending champion Tommy Jones, Mauldin, S.C., is No. 5.

Four bowlers will fight for the 6th slot in the stepladder finals during a one-game shootout to start Sunday's action. Robert Smith, the 2002 Japan Cup titlist from Thousand Oaks, Calif., is No. 6. Park Jong Soo, a Korean Professional Bowlers Association member, is No. 7 while Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., is No. 8 and Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, is No. 9.

The televised finals will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Notes:

Duke owns a 2-5 record in Japan Cup championship rounds. He advanced to the title match in the 1999 Japan Cup against Parker Bohn III, but lost, 233-234. Duke owns a 233.00 average in Japan Cup championship round matches.

Angelo is 3-8 in eight career televised finals appearances. Opponents have averaged 243.45 against Angelo in championship rounds.

Bohn, a four-time Japan Cup champion, took the 8th spot in the televised final round by shooting 279 in his 32nd game to move two spots in the standings.

Sunday will mark Tommy Jones' first career arena finals appearance.

Round Robin Match Play Continues

Norm Duke

Norm Duke leads the 32 remaining bowlers in the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 with a 5,785 24-game pinfall (including bonus pins) in round robin match play despite going just 3-5 in the first of two sessions Saturday at Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel Bowling Center.

Robert Smith, the 2002 Japan Cup winner, is just four pins behind Duke while defending champion Tommy Jones is 3rd with 5,773.

PBA Tour bowlers currently hold the top six spots. The top nine bowlers after 32 games of round robin match play advance to the televised finals at the Tokyo Metro Gymnasium on Sunday. Bowlers seeded 6-9 will participate in a shootout with the highest scorer advancing into the stepladder finals.

Duke Dashes Into Lead

Norm Duke

Norm Duke has an impressive bowling resume which includes 22 PBA Tour titles and over $2 million in PBA earnings. One victory that has eluded him, however, is the Japan Cup title.

Duke is one step closer to earning that elusive win as he holds the lead in the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 after the first day of round robin match play on Friday with a 3,896 16-game pinfall (including bonus pins) at the Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel Bowling Center.

"This is one of the most important tournaments left for me," said Duke, Clermont, Fla. "Of course, the U.S. Open would complete the 'Grand Slam', but I love it here. This thing is so important to me. That's why my nerves are there. I'm trying as hard as I can."

Duke went an impressive 13-2-1 in match play including 7-0-1 in his final eight-game set to help rise to the top spot.

Three former Japan Cup champions follow Duke. Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., is 2nd with 3,788 and is looking to add to his 2002 Japan Cup win. Chris Barnes, the 2003 Japan Cup titlist from Flower Mound, Texas, is 3rd with 3,775.

Defending champion Tommy Jones, Mauldin, S.C., sits 4th with 3,761. Jones' 2004 Japan Cup win help propel him to career-highs with $224,130 in earnings and a 222.99 overall average during the 2004-05 PBA Tour season.

Japan's Isao Yamamoto is 6th with 3,725 and is looking for his second straight finals appearance.

Just 32 bowlers remain in the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 after the second round of qualifying was completed with Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., leading the field with a 4,684 20-game pinfall after averaging 224.40 in his 10-game set Thursday at Shin Yokohama Prince Bowling Center.

The bowlers will drop total pinfall and begin anew with the first of four eight-game round robin match play sessions, beginning Friday.

"It's a disappointment, but at the same time I'm glad to be here," said Smith of the remaining bowlers starting over with a clean slate.

Smith is looking for his second Japan Cup title after winning the event in 2002. The six-time PBA Tour title winner feels his past successes give him an advantage in match play.

"I know what to expect in match play. Considering the fact that we start at zero, you have to come out quick and stay on top," said Smith, who finished his round with scores of 249 and 247. "It's nice to know that top nine make the [finals]. The tournament's just now getting ready to start."

Patrick Healey Jr., Flower Mound, Texas, shot one of five 300 games on the day, en route to a 4,647 2nd-place finish. Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., converted a 7-10 split and finished 3rd with 4,584.

Defending champion Tommy Jones, Mauldin, S.C., shot 300 and finished with 4,482 to take 6th overall. He's looking for his 5th career PBA Tour title after winning four last season.

Japan's Mitsuko Tokimoto, the top female bowler in Japan Professional Bowling Association competition, had the event's first 300 game and advanced to match play after she finished tied for 13th with 4,404.

The nine-bowler televised finals will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Round Two Notes

Four PBA Tour bowlers barely missed a spot in the round robin match play round. Jason Couch shot 208 in his final game, but finished 33rd with 4,230. Just behind him was Walter Ray Williams Jr., who was 34th with 2,090. Williams, looking for his 41st career PBA Tour title, shot below 200 in each of his final three games. Mika Koivunuemi finished 36th with 4,200.

Mike Machuga earned a 20,000 yen bonus for converting the 7-10 split n Thursday. Junichi Yajima, the all-time JPBA leader with 41 career titles has advanced to round robin match play.

Honesty Pays Off

For Norm Duke, Wednesday's first round of qualifying became pretty interesting even before it started.

Just before the session was officially to begin, Duke was sanding his bowling balls in the settee area. Sanding bowling balls by the lanes is acceptable in official PBA competitions, but this week all bowlers are playing by the JPBA's rules. In this case, Duke's actions were actually illegal.

When Duke discovered his error, he found two tournament officials to inquire what the penalty was for his transgression. The bowling balls he had sanded were taken out of play.

"I was afraid at that point that all of the weighed balls were going to be illegal, which meant a disqualification," said Duke. "Luckily for me, one of the bowling balls I had weighed in and did not sand was still in play."

Duke went on to average an impressive 231.30 and finish 4th on Wednesday using just one bowling ball, the Alien made by BowlersParaside.com.

Smith Leads After Day One

Robert Smith

DyDo JAPAN CUP 2005 が神奈川県の新横浜プリンスホテルボウリングセンターで開催され、ロバート・スミスがダントツで1次予選トップ、そして時本美津子がJPBAで最上位となる5位で通過と大健闘!

Robert Smith is seeing immediate results from a change in philosophy.

Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., leads the Dydo Japan Cup 2005 with a 2,440 10-game pinfall after the first round at Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel Bowling Center Wednesday.

"I've been working on a whole different game," said Smith, who has begun to focus on his approach and timing instead of his power game. "I knew I could throw it hard, but I didn't have that touch. Every shot I threw [today], I threw on balance. I didn't fall off balance on any shots and that's totally not the norm for me."

Smith, who won the 2002 Japan Cup, credits a recent trip to Europe with PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss for his change in attitude.

"I've been practicing ever since I went to Europe with Brian, and it's just been a new drive for me to bowl."

Smith came out of the gate quickly on Wednesday, shooting 236, 230 and 255 in the first three games. His scores only went higher from there, as he tossed 279s in games six and nine, as well as a 259 in game eight.

Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., is 2nd with 2,388 while Korea's Byun Yong Hwan is 3rd with 2,321. Norm Duke, the 22-time PBA Tour title winner from Clermont, Fla., is 4th with 2,313.

Defending champion Tommy Jones, Mauldin, S.C., is 10th with 2,253.

Of the 20 PBA Tour bowlers participating this week, 17 advanced to the next round. Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., was the last PBA Tour bowler to advance, sitting 58th with 2,092.

 【PBA】 Dydo JAPAN CUP 2005

Dydo Drinco Japan Cup 2005 Just Hours Away

Festivities for the Dydo Drinco Japan Cup 2005 began Tuesday afternoon at the Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel with the official press conference. Officials and top bowlers from the Japanese Professional Bowlers Association (JPBA) and Korean Professional Bowlers Association (KPBA) joined members of the PBA to talk about the event, which begins Wednesday morning.

Defending champion Tommy Jones posed with his portrait that was created in honor of his Dydo Drinco Japan Cup 2004 victory. He was later asked what it felt like to win in Japan last year.

"Winning the Japan Cup was a dream come true," said Jones, who went on to win three more titles last season.

One Japanese media member commented on Norm Duke's nationally televised 300 game against Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the 2003 PBA GEICO Earl Anthony Classic. The writer wanted to know if Duke had a chance at bowling another 300 game in Sunday's arena final.

"As long as I bowl Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the title match, I might have a chance for that 300 game," joked Duke, who finished 8th in the 2004-05 PBA World Point Rankings.

The 2005 PBA Player of the Year Patrick Allen was asked his chances this year after finishing 24th in the 2004 Japan Cup.

"I obviously have a great chance to come here and do well, and make amends for last year," Allen, who went on to win three titles last season, responded.

Reyes recalls fond memories

Although Tony Reyes is making his first career appearance in the Japan Cup event, the 31-year-old has had success in Japan in the past.

Reyes dominated the 1993 All-California Foreign Minister Cup Tour, winning 12 medals (including six gold) in the special event which took him to many cities including Tokyo, Sendai, Nagoya, Kobe and Kyoto.

"We won the Foreign Minister Cup and it was a once in a lifetime experience," said Reyes, who attended San Jose (Calif.) State from 1992-95. "Returning here as a 31-year-old, I appreciate it a lot more than when I was 19."

Say cheese

With his appearance this week, Walter Ray Williams Jr. is the only PBA Tour bowler to participate in all 21 Japan Cup events. Hero Noda, however, may have as much experience covering the prestigious event as Williams has bowling in it.

Noda is known for his sharp action photos and interesting portraits he takes during the events he covers. He's also quite thorough, as he manages to capture almost every nuance of an event.

Noda's work will no doubt be featured on PBA.com in the coming week. He certainly gives media types plenty of shots to choose from. During last yearユs Japan Cup, Noda produced close to 1,000 photos of the action on and off the lanes for editors to choose from.

Watch out for Yajima

During Tuesday's festivities, one bowler's name kept popping up as someone to watch for this week. This bowler hasn't won a PBA Tour title, but heユs done pretty well in Japan.

Junichi Yajima, owner of a record 41 JPBA Tour titles is still a formidable foe, as he showed in the states this summer. The 59-year-old advanced to the round of 8 in the 2005 PBA Senior Tucson Open before losing to PBA Hall of Famer Tom Baker, three-games-to-one.

On another note, fans may recall Yajima was presented with an official PBA 300 game ring during the 2001 Japan Cup in recognition of a perfect game he rolled during the Brunswick Memorial Open in 1979.
