【PBA】 PBA East Region Kingpon Lanes Open

Johnson Makes More History

Liz Johnson

Liz Johnson continued to re-write the history books as she became the first female to win a PBA title, winning the 2005 PBA East Region Kingpin Lanes Open in Rome, N.Y., on Sunday.

Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., defeated exempt bowler and three-season PBA Tour veteran, Michael Fagan, 244-171, in the title match at Kingpin Lanes. Johnson began the match with four straight strikes and later secured the victory with strikes in frames 6-9.

"I've been so close," said Johnson, who has three 2nd place finishes in PBA competition, including a runner-up finish two weeks ago in the 2005 PBA East Region Bowlers Supply Open in York, Pa. "After [finishing second] a couple times, it kind of bugged me. I didn't want to be second anymore."

Johnson advanced to the title match by beating four-time PBA Tour title winner Ryan Shafer in the semifinals, 246-173.

The 31-year-old Johnson was the first female to advance to the nationally televised finals of a PBA Tour event when she finished 2nd in the 2005 PBA Banquet Open in Grand Rapids, Mich., in March, 2005.

In November 2004, Johnson's appearance in the 2004 PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic in Wickliffe, Ohio, marked the first time a female appeared in standard PBA Tour event.

Johnson was an 11-time winner in the Professional Women's Bowling Association before the league folded in the fall of 2003. She won the 1996 U.S. Open on the way to winning the 1996 Rookie of the Year award.

The 2005-06 PBA Regional Tour season features over 180 events in seven regions across the country, and offers exemptions for the PBA Tour to the season-ending point leaders in each of the regions.

The PBA Tour, which features an all-exempt, 64-bowler format, begins its 2005-06 season Oct. 26 with the PBA Tulsa Championship in Tulsa, Okla. The winner receives the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2006-07 PBA Tour season.

【PBA】 PBA Senior Jackson Open 【Final】

Tapp's Terrific

Charlie Tapp

Charlie Tapp certainly saved his best for last.

Tapp won his first career PBA Senior Tour title in the season's final event, defeating Vince Mazzanti Jr., two-games-to-one, in the finals of the 2005 PBA Senior Jackson Open at Airport Lanes on Wednesday.

Tapp, who was winless in his first 26 PBA Senior Tour events, averaged 250 over the three games to take home the $8,000 top prize.

"I had a really nice look and the longer it went, the worse it got on his side and the better it was for me," said Tapp, who lost to Mazzanti in the title match of the 2003 PBA Senior Lake County Open.

Tapp, Kalamazoo, Mich., dropped the first game to Mazzanti, who was looking for his second title of the season, 234-227. Mazzanti was forced to mark in the 10th frame after Tapp struck on his last five shots. It was, however, a sign of things to come.

The 54-year-old Tapp recovered by striking on his final six shots of a 254-187 game two win before closing out the match with a 269-214 victory in game three.

Tapp punched his ticket to the title match after he defeated Jim Brenner, 2-1, in their semifinal match. Tapp won the opening game, 245-236 before taking the final game, 235-228.

Mazzanti, Levittown, Pa., swept three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year and nine-time PBA Senior Tour title winner, Bob Glass, 2-0, in the semifinals. Mazzanti averaged 249.50 in the win and improved to 5-0 lifetime against Glass in match play.

Tapp, who had missed time this season after injuring rib cartilage early in the season, finished 4th in last week's 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm.

Vincent Victorious

Gene Vincent

With tears in his eyes, Gene Vincent stepped up to accept the championship trophy after he defeated rookie Roger LeClair, two-games-to-one, in the title match of the 2005 PBA Senior Lake County Open presented by Storm Thursday evening at Olympia Lanes.

Vincent, who took home $8,000 for his first career PBA Senior Tour title, broke a 1-1 tie with a 236-204 game three win. The 53 year old struck five times in frames 3-8 while LeClair struck just once over the same span.

"I have so much pride having 'PBA' on my shoulder, and winning a title can't take that away," said Vincent, Decatur, Ill. "It was my dream to win."

Vincent dropped the first game, 202-193, after suffering two opens over his first four frames which LeClair took advantage of with three single pin conversions and a strike.

In game two, Vincent struck four times in his first five frames to jump out to a 31-pin lead through five frames en route to a 218-197 victory.

The title win marked a long day for Vincent, who bowled 20 games over five different matches on the day. He had to come from behind in three of those matches.

Vincent advanced to the finals by beating James Brenner, LeClaire, Iowa, 2-1. With the match tied 1-1, Vincent found himself down 41 pins through six frames in the final game. He fired five straight strikes, forcing Brenner to strike out in the 10th. Brenner left a 10 pin on his first shot, giving Vincent a 225-215 win.

LeClair, Clackamas, Ore., swept Charlie Tapp, Kalamazoo, Mich., 2-0, in the semifinals as Tapp averaged just 176.50 for the match.

2005-06 PBA Tour Schedule Announced

Danny Wiseman

The PBA announced its 2005-06 PBA Tour schedule, with 21 stops included in the October to April season. The 2005-06 PBA Tour will return to 13 venues from the 2004-05 season, and will feature an expanded schedule from last season with an additional 21st event in January, 2006.

New hosts on the PBA Tour include: The Lanes at Coffee Creek in Owasso, Okla. (outside Tulsa); Stardust Bowl I in Hammond, Ind., and Clifton Park Bowl in Clifton Park, N.Y. (outside Albany).

The PBA Tour will return to Emerson Lanes in Parkersburg, W.V., for the first time since 1965. The schedule also includes a stop at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, N.Y. (outside Buffalo) for the first time since 1991, ABC West Lanes in Mechanicsburg, Pa. (outside Harrisburg) for the first time since 1998 and AMF Christown Lanes in Phoenix, Ariz., for the first time since 2000. The PBA Tour will return to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

"This season's schedule includes centers where we had strong attendance and substantial media attention last season," said PBA Commissioner Fred Schreyer. "In addition, we've added sites that we feel will run exciting events and will help us accomplish those goals again in 2005-06."

The season will begin with the PBA Tulsa Championship on Oct. 26, which will feature the arena finals in the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the University of Tulsa campus. That will be followed by Tour stops in Denver, Council Bluffs and Milwaukee for the first major of the season, the Miller High Life USBC Masters, which will feature the arena finals in U.S. Cellular Arena. The first half of the season continues with events in Chicago, Hammond, Ind., Harrisburg, and Albany, N.Y.

After a two-week break during the holiday season, the Tour will head to Medford, Ore., followed by a unique stop in Fountain Valley, Calif. for the PBA Dick Weber Open. The special event, open to both PBA members and amateurs, will feature a throwback-style format that includes 15 games of qualifying, round robin match play and a step-ladder finals format, a format that was featured in earlier stages of the Tour's existence.

The PBA Tour regular season resumes with stops in Phoenix, Birmingham, Atlanta, Parkersburg, W.V. and North Brunswick (N.J.) for the 63rd U.S. Open.

The season continues with stops in Buffalo, N.Y., and Akron, Ohio, before taking a week off. Action resumes with a stop in Detroit before the Tour heads to Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis for the 2006 PBA Denny's World Championship. The arena finals will be held at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University campus.

The next week, the Tour will hold a standard event in Grand Rapids, Mich., before ending the season with the 2006 PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

【PBA】 PBA Senior Manassas Open 【Final】

First Time's the Charm

Ray Johnson

Appearing in his first career title match, Ray Johnson defeated Guppy Troup, two-games-to-one, in the finals of the 2005 PBA Senior Manassas Open Wednesday at Bowl America Manassas.

Johnson, who took home $8,000, won the opening game, 222-215. Troup failed to strike in the 10th frame while Johnson struck on his first ball to clinch the win.

"I didn't really have a mindset of winning or not winning," said Johnson, who last week won his third career PBA Senior Regional Tour event. "I just tried to commit and make good shots. Even against Guppy, I didn't think of winning or losing. I wanted to throw strikes and see what would happen."

Johnson suffered his worst game of the week during a 235-167, game two loss to Troup, who was also looking for his first career PBA Senior Tour win.

A 60-year-old pro shop owner from Battle Creek, Mich., Johnson responded by winning the deciding game, 227-163. He strung together three strikes early on while Troup opened after failing to convert the "Big Four" (4-6-7-10 split) late in the game.

Prior to the win, Johnson's best career finish was 14th in the 2001 PBA Senior Jackson Open.

Johnson needed three games to punch his ticket to the title match by defeating Don Sylvia, Discovery Bay, Calif., 2-1. With the match tied, Johnson won game three, 211-199.

Troup, owner of eight PBA Tour titles, advanced to the title match by defeating Roger Bowker, a five-time PBA Tour title winner from Ocala, Fla., 2-0. Troup, Taylorsville, N.C., narrowly won the first game, 245-236, before handily taking game two, 216-169.
