【PBA】 PBA Orange County Classic 【Final】

Victory For Voss

Brian Voss

Brian Voss took sole possession of 8th place on the PBA Tour all-time titlist list, with his 23rd career title, after defeating Mike Machuga, 226-181, in the PBA Orange County Classic presented by Storm Sunday at Fountain Bowl.

Machuga, Erie, Pa., had a slim one-pin lead after three frames but two critical spares in the following two frames gave Voss a chance to take the lead. Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., responded with three consecutive strikes for a 136-117 lead after six. In the ninth, Machuga went on to leave the 10 pin after a 2-4-10 split, giving Voss the opportunity to seal the win with a mark in the 9th and 10th. Voss converted a spare in the 9th and struck with his first shot in the 10th for the win.

"In these games it comes down to the last three frames," Voss, who was tied with Marshall Holman on the PBA Tour all-time titlist list heading into today, said. "The first eight you juggle for position but it was the shot in the ninth that was the whole deal."

Voss advanced to the final via a 235-151 win in the second semi-final over Eugene McCune, Munster, Ind. McCune opened the match with four spares and an open frame in the first six frames opening the door for Voss to take command from the start. Voss responded with five strikes in the first six frames and never looked back.

Machuga defeated Chris Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, 244-224, in the first semi-final. After opening with a spare, Machuga went on to strike in five of the next six frames to take a 179-178 lead after seven. Barnes handed the game to Machuga after finishing with three straight spares and an open frame in the 10th.

Voss picked up his 23rd career title, a $40,000 first-place prize and a one-year Tour exemption. Machuga won $20,000 for his 2nd place finish. Barnes and McCune won $10,000 for 3rd place.

  【PBA】 PBA Orange County Classic 【Round 4】

Third Time's the Charm?

Brian Voss

PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss will try for the third time this season to capture his 23rd career title as he defeated Mike Scroggins, four-games-to-two, Friday in the PBA Orange County Classic presented by Storm.

Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., needed to double in the 10th frame to win after Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, spared and struck in the 10th.

Voss is the second bowler this season to make three television appearances. He lost in the championship match both times, falling to Brian Himmler in the PBA Chicago Open and Tommy Jones in the PBA Denver Open.

"I've gone two years and five second-place finishes since my last title so I have got to win. It's plain and simple," said Voss, who with a win would move into sole possession of 8th place on the all-time PBA Tour titles list. "There are some people who never get to bowl on television so I'm lucky, but I've got to win. These second (place finishes) are tough."

Voss has not won a title since the PBA Memphis Open in 2002, a span of 46 events. He will face Eugene McCune, Munster, Ind., in the second semi-final match on Sunday. McCune defeated David Traber, McHenry, Ill., 4-0.

Chris Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, defeated another PBA Hall of Famer, Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 4-2, to advance to the championship round for the first time this season. Barnes made seven television appearances last season but came away with just one title.

Barnes will face Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., in the other semi-final match. Machuga defeated Rick Lawrence, Celina, Texas, 4-3, and will make his first television appearance of the season.

  【PBA】 PBA Orange County Classic 【Round 1】

Ruiz Rules The Lanes At Fountain Bowl

Pete Weber

Amateur Leonard Ruiz Jr., Upland, Calif., upset No. 1 seed Walter Ray Williams Jr., four-games-to-one Thursday to advance to the round of 32 in the PBA Orange County Classic presented by Storm at Fountain Bowl.

Down 0-1, Ruiz rebounded by averaging 255.50 in his final four games, in effect knocking out Williams, Ocala, Fla.

In the fifth and final game, Ruiz needed to mark in the 10th to defeat Williams and threw three perfect strikes to advance.

The loss marks the second time this season Williams was knocked out by an amateur as Kelly Bonta defeated Williams, 4-0, in the PBA Pepsi Open in Wichita, Kan.

"Every time you go into a tournament, you feel like you can win," Ruiz, who owns a Pro Shop at West Covina Lanes, said. "I thought I could win if I threw the ball well. I was a little nervous. I got into a groove and a rhythm and just had a good look."

Ruiz will face Peter Hernandez, Miami, in the round of 32. Hernandez advanced by defeating Joe Ciccone, Buffalo, N.Y., 4-0 this morning.

For the second consecutive week, Pete Weber swept the Commissioner's Exemption to advance into the round of 32. Weber defeated Mark Baker, Costa Mesa, Calif., 4-0, while last week the St. Ann, Mo. native defeated Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore., 4-0.

Brad Angelo, seeded No. 2, came back from an 0-3 deficit to defeat Nathan Bohr, Wichita, Kan. 4-3. Angelo will face Rick Lawrence, Celina, Texas, in the round of 32.

Girard Comes Back For First Win

Patrick Girard

Patrick Girard came back from a three game deficit to defeat Steve Jaros, Yorkville, Ill., four-games-to-three in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Orange County Classic presented by Storm at Fountain Bowl.

Girard, Quebec, Canada, seeded 55th, was the last of the 58 exempt PBA Tour bowlers to win a match this season. He came into this week having lost his first six matches in the best-of-seven match play format.

"It's a big relief right now. I wasn't having very much fun the last couple weeks," Girard, who is in his second season on Tour, said. "I had nothing to lose (behind 0-3). I had lost every week so I just tried to get one game at a time and focus on one frame at a time."

Girard, who at 21 years old is the youngest bowler on Tour, fell behind Jaros 0-2 by averaging just 172.00. After dropping game three, 267-265, Girard came back to average 238.75 over the next four games, including a 277 in game five, to win the match.

Also pulling off upsets were No. 53 Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, who defeated No. 12 Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., 4-0, and No. 54 Brian LeClair, Athens, N.Y., who swept No. 11 Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, 4-0.

In a high scoring match, Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., who is coming off back-to-back championship round appearances, defeated Justin Hromek, Towanda, Kan., 4-2. The average winning score in the six games was 260.17.

Wolfe Wins PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic

Mike Wolfe

Mike Wolfe won his first PBA Tour title after defeating Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., 214-212, in the PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic Sunday at Lava Lanes.

Up by two pins in the 8th frame, Wolfe finished his game with a spare in the 9th, two strikes and a nine-count in the 10th forcing Duke to double and knock down two to win. Duke struck with his first shot but left the 10 pin standing with his second attempt, giving Wolfe, New Albany, Ind., the $40,000 first place prize and an exemption for the 2005-06 PBA Tour season.

"I'm very excited and very relieved," said Wolfe, who had to defeat two of the PBA's greatest players to win. "First thing you think is that he (Duke) is going to do it (double) because he is Norm Duke and that's what he does best. In that situation you just hope for the best."

Wolfe advanced to the finals by defeating Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., 256-206. Williams, who was looking to tie the PBA Tour all-time titles record of 41, was down 11 pins after four frames but failed to convert a 4-6-7 split in the 5th, leaving the 6, to give Wolfe a 29-pin lead. Williams then had three spares in his next four frames, placing Wolfe in the finals for the first time in his career.

In the first semifinal, Duke opened with a strike but a 7-10 split in the second frame gave Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., an early 57-28 advantage. However, Duke responded with nine strikes in his final 10 frames for a 246-211 win and a spot in the title match.

Duke won $20,000 for his 2nd place finish. Angelo and Williams won $10,000 for 3rd place.

【PBA】 PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic 【Round 4】

Chasing Anthony

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. will get another shot at tying Earl Anthony's Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour career titles record. Fittingly, he'll try to do it in the event named after the man with 41 career titles.

Williams, Ocala, Fla., defeated Michael Haugen Jr., Las Vegas, four-games-to-two Friday to advance to the championship round of the PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic at Lava Lanes.

Williams, who is making his third championship round appearance this season, won his 40th career title earlier this season in the PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic.

"A couple of years ago I didn't think this could happen but now there is a pretty good chance that it will happen," said Williams, who with a win would capture multiple titles for the fifth consecutive season. "I still have to win two matches and there are some great bowlers that I am going to have to beat to do it."

Williams has now advanced to the championship round in the last three PBA Tour events named after the man whose record he is chasing.

Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., advanced to the championship round for the second consecutive week, as he defeated Brian Himmler, Cincinnati, 4-1. Duke will be looking to win his 22nd career title, which would put him in a tie for 9th place on the all-time titles list.

Duke will face Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., who is making his second championship round appearance this season. Angelo, last season's PBA World Point Rankings leader, will be looking to win his first career title.

In the second semi-final, Williams will face Mike Wolfe, New Albany, Ind., who defeated Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, 4-0. Wolfe will also be looking to capture his first career title.

【PBA】 PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic 【Round 1】

Weber Wipes Out Holman

Pete Weber

Pete Weber swept Marshall Holman four-games-to-none Thursday in a battle of PBA Hall of Famers to advance to the round of 32 in the PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic at Lava Lanes.

Weber, St. Ann, Mo., a 31-time PBA Tour titlist, swept a match in the best-of-seven match play format for the first time this season, defeating the 22-time titlist Holman, who was given the Commissioner's Exemption for this week's event.

Holman, Medford, Ore., had a chance to win game four by striking out, but left a 1-2-4-6-10 washout in the 10th frame to give Weber the 224-216 win.

"Marshall and I go way back, I've known him since I was 12. We've had some close matches and some blowouts," said Weber, who won last season's PBA Medford Open. "I thought the ball he threw in the 10th was good, but it just skidded and didn't pick his roll up. It was an honor and a privilege to bowl against Marshall here."

Weber, the No. 7 seed, who has yet to advance past the round of 16 this season, will face No. 26 Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., in Friday's round of 32.

Also advancing to the round of 32 were No. 1 Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., who came back from 0-2 down to defeat amateur Shawn Copeland, 4-2, Milwaukie, Ore., and No. 3 Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., who came back from 1-3 down to defeat qualifier Kevin Croucher, Grants Pass, Ore., 4-3. Croucher needed to double in the 10th to win the match, but left a 9 pin to give Allen the 191-189 game seven win.

Duke Sweeps His Way Into Round of 32

Norm Duke

Norm Duke threw three strikes in the final frame to win game four and defeat D.J. Archer, four games-to-none, in the round of 64 Thursday in the PBA Earl Anthony Medford Classic at Lava Lanes.

Archer, Dallas, struck out in the 10th frame forcing
