  【PBA】 PBA Pepsi Open 【Final】

Hurd's So Good

Jason Hurd

Jason Hurd picked up his first PBA Tour singles title by defeating Mike Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., 226-190, in the PBA Pepsi Open Sunday at Northrock Lanes.

Needing four pins in the 10th frame to secure the win, Hurd knocked down seven to pick up the $40,000 first place prize and an exemption for the 2005-06 PBA Tour season.

Hurd, Titusville, Fla., came into this weekend having lost his past six matches on television, including two weeks ago at the PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic where he lost to Walter Ray Williams Jr., 268-186.

"The difference was I was a lot less nervous this week and I went out with a much more relaxed attitude," Hurd said. "I was better acquainted with the set and the fans. I just wanted to stay focused and make sure I made good shots.モ"

Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., who has not won a title since the 1994 IOC Foresters Open, started the match with two spares and an open frame. After Hurd started with two spares himself, he ran off a string of five consecutive strikes to take a 33-pin lead after seven frames to put the match out of reach.

Hurd broke his six-match losing streak by defeating Rick Lawrence, Celina, Texas, 243-185, in the semi-finals. The loss was Lawrence's first on television in his career, after he started 6-0.

In the first semifinal, Edwards defeated Danny Wiseman, Baltimore, 222-164. While Edwards started strong, throwing strikes in four of the first six frames, it was Wiseman's three open frames late in the game that gave Edwards the win.

Edwards won $20,000 for his 2nd place finish. Wiseman and Lawrence won $10,000 for 3rd place.

  【PBA】 PBA Pepsi Open 【Round 4】

Rick's Ride Continues

Rick Lawrence

Rick Lawrence will try to become the first bowler since 2000 to win back-to-back Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour titles as he advanced to the finals of the PBA Pepsi Open at Northrock Lanes Friday with a four-games-to-two win over Steve Wilson.

Lawrence, Celina, Texas, won last week's PBA BowlersParadise.com Open to improve to 6-0 in his career on television. With two more wins Sunday, he will tie the PBA Tour record for consecutive wins on television to start a career.

"Since I won here in 1999, it's like I have been on a search to find that guy again," said Lawrence, who won his first career title in 1999 at Northrock Lanes in the PBA Brunswick ProSource Open. "I found him a few times for Regional events, but I hadn't found him out here until last week. I finally found him and I still have him."

Lawrence would become the first bowler since Walter Ray Williams Jr. to win consecutive titles.

Mike Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., defeated Hugh Miller, Seattle, 4-3, to advance to the championship round for the first time since 1999. Edwards will be looking for his first title since 1994, a span of 210 events, the third longest dry spell among the 58 exempt PBA Tour members.

Also qualifying for the finals for the second time this season is Jason Hurd, Titusville, Fla., who defeated No. 6 Chris Barnes, 4-0. Hurd, who tied for 3rd at the PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic, comes into Sunday's final having lost his last six matches on television.

Hurd will face Lawrence in one semi-final, while Edwards will take on Danny Wiseman, Baltimore, who defeated Tommy Jones, 4-3. Wiseman won this season's first event, the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress on Oct. 31.

  【PBA】 PBA Pepsi Open 【Round 1】

Shocking Day at the PBA Pepsi Open

Kelly Bonta

It was all in a day's work for amateur Kelly Bonta on Wednesday. He woke up, completed a day of work at Central Steel Incorporated, then swept No. 1 seed and Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the PBA Pepsi Open at Northrock Lanes.

Bonta, Wichita, Kan., assured Williams another week of waiting to tie Earl Anthony's all-time PBA Tour titles record of 41, as he shocked Williams four-games-to-none and pleased a raucous hometown crowd in the round of 64.

"I wanted to go out and bowl well and fill my frames, not have any opens and give him the best match an amateur guy can give him," said Bonta, who played golf at Coffeyville (Kan.) College. "I guess I caught a groove for two days...its past incredible."

Bonta, the first amateur to win a match this season, earned a place in the round of 64 by finishing as the top amateur in Tuesday's PBA Tour Qualifying Round. He came out of the gates fast on Wednesday, winning game one in the best-of-seven format, 269-234. After winning games two and three by nearly identical scores, 227-202 and 226-200, respectively, Bonta held off a Williams comeback in game four.

Williams needed to finish the game with three consecutive strikes to force Bonta to mark, but Williams left a 4-9 split, giving Bonta the 251-215 win.

Also winning Wednesday were five former Wichita State University bowlers: Chris Barnes, Patrick Healey Jr., Lonnie Waliczek, Rick Steelsmith and Tim Penner. Penner became the first Commissioner's Exemption to win a match this season, when he knocked off Steve Jaros, 4-2.

Reyes Rocks Northrock

Tony Reyes

Tony Reyes, San Jose, Calif., threw a strike with his first shot in the 10th frame of game seven to defeat Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J. four games-to-three in the round of 64 Wednesday in the PBA Pepsi Open at Northrock Lanes.

Reyes took a 3-2 lead in the match before throwing six spares and a 6-7-10 split in game six which gave Bohn the game and tied the match at three games a piece. Reyes made a critical ball change heading into the final game and opened with eight consecutive strikes but left the four pin with his ninth shot, opening the door back up for Bohn. Reyes finished the match with three strikes, giving him his first win over Bohn since the two met in the championship round of the 2001 ABC Masters.

"My goal every week is to start out quick, especially against Parker," said Reyes, who has now advanced to the round of 32 twice this season. "After throwing the split, I felt like my shot wasn't that bad but it hit me right away to make a ball change. It worked out great."

Danny Wiseman, Baltimore, defeated Mike DeVaney, Henderson, Nev., 4-2. Wiseman will face Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla. who advanced by winning a 4-1 match over David Traber, Bull Valley, Ill.

Wes Malott, Austin, Texas advanced by defeating Brian Himmler, Cincinnati, 4-3, and will face Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, Friday morning. Fleming advanced by defeating Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., 4-1.

  【PBA】 PBA BowlersParadise.com Open 【Final】

It's Good to Be Rick

Rick Lawrence

When it comes to bowling on television, Rick Lawrence is the perfect bowler.

Making just his second televised appearance since joining the Tour in 1990, Lawrence defeated Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., 233-198, in the title match of the PBA BowlersParadise.com Open Sunday at Brunswick Zone Lakeside.

Lawrence, Celina, Texas, went 4-0 in his previous televised championship round of the 1999 PBA ProSource Open in Wichita, Kan.

Lawrence struck in seven of his first eight shots against Angelo, while the 2003-04 PBA World Point Rankings leader suffered two open frames in the same span.

"I'd like to say it was experience that helped me out there, but I have not had a lot of experience on television," said Lawrence, who won $40,000 and earned an exemption for the 2005-06 season. "Still, I've bowled for a long time so I think I still have a lot of experience in dealing with pressure."

Before taking on Angelo, Lawrence defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the semifinals, 238-217. Williams, looking to tie bowling legend Earl Anthony for the most career Tour titles with 41 wins, started out slow, converting three spares in the first five frames. Lawrence sealed the game with strikes from the 6th-9th frames, while Williams, Ocala, Fla., converted single pin spares in the 9th and 10th frames.

In the other semifinal, Angelo defeated Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., 257-226. Down six pins heading into the 6th frame, Angelo struck on his final seven shots while Couch managed just two strikes the rest of the way.

Angelo wins $20,000 for his 2nd place finish while Williams and Couch take $10,000 apiece, tying for 3rd.

Notes: Lawrence had to defeat Williams in his 1999 PBA ProSource title win, as well. He beat Williams 258-207 in the semifinal before taking out Parker Bohn III, 248-221, in the title match.

Williams has made the last four telecasts of St. Louis area PBA Tour events. In that span, he's lost to lefties three times. He fell to Andy Neuer in 1994 (Richmond, Mo.) and Mike Scroggins in 2004 (St. Clair, Ill.).

Angelo now owns a 1-6 career mark on television. Williams was 1-6 on TV before he captured his first career title.

Williams Shoots For History

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. will be looking to tie Earl Anthony's PBA Tour record 41 titles Sunday in the final round of the PBA BowlersParadise.com Open after derailing Steve Jaros, four-games-to-one, in the round of 8 Friday evening at Brunswick Zone Lakeside.

Williams, Ocala, Fla., averaged 236.00 over his first three games to take a 3-0 lead before Jaros, Yorkville, Ill., rebounded with a 235-227 win in game four. Williams, who went 16-3 with a 240.95 average in match play this week, struck nine times in game five to win, 257-184, and earn his Tour-best 146th career televised finals appearance.

"I didn't really expect it to be this quickly," Williams said of his opportunity to tie Earl Anthony's record this season. "I've been bowling well lately, and I've had a few breaks in match play this week."

In other matches, Rick Lawrence, a 15-year veteran of the Tour from Celina, Texas, will make just his second career televised finals appearance after knocking off Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, 4-0. Lawrence won the first three games by an average of 10.33 pins before taking the final game, 237-183.

Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., will make his first finals appearance of the season after defeating Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, 4-1. Angelo, who is looking for his first career Tour title, averaged 262.50 in his four wins.

Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., will look for his 12th career PBA Tour title after he beat Steve Wilson, Lake Worth, Fla., 4-1. Up 2-1, Couch used games of 246 and 236 to advance, finishing the week 16-6 in match play.

Couch will face Angelo in the first semifinal while Williams will face Lawrence in the second semifinal.

Friday in Valley Park

Patrick Allen

Best friends...except on the lanes

No. 2 Patrick Allen defeated No. 63 Tom Daugherty in the round of 64 yesterday, 4-1. It seemed like a rather routine win for Allen, but in reality it wasn't. Off the lanes, Allen and Daugherty are best friends.

"I was way more relaxed bowling him," Daugherty said of his match with Allen. "During practice [Wednesday and Thursday] he was helping me out, which is pretty nice for a guy who is trying to beat me. He was helping me out with which ball to drill, and how to lay it out and where to play the lanes. "
"We had lunch together and we played Golden Tee together but once the match started it was 'game on'," said Daugherty, who advanced to the round of 64 by finishing 4th in the PBA Tour Qualifying Round Wednesday.

Daugherty defeated Allen in the first game, 195-194, but Allen went on to take the next four games.

"After the first game I was thinking I better start throwing the ball better because he is going to start bowling better," said Dougherty.

Even down 3-1, Dougherty made some noise before Allen sealed the victory with a 259-258 win in game five to advance to the round of 32.

"[Patrick] wasn't mad after the first game, but he was mad the last game when I made a little noise in the 9th frame. But he came back and was even louder than I was, and being the great player that he is, he struck out in the 9th and 10th to beat me by a pin."

Getting ready by hitting the links

How do competitors on the PBA Tour prepare for their matches? Well, some guys hit the links to blow off some steam. Thursday morning, Norm Duke played golf alongside his round of 64 opponent, Robert Smith. Pete Weber and Mike Machuga tagged along to fill out the foursome.

"Robert and I played golf together [Thursday] with Weber and Machuga, and not only did we have a blast but it helped to loosen everyone up," said Duke, who did not report the group's golf scores. "We knew we had to bowl each other, but we still enjoy each others company and that made for a good day either way."

Tough time for finalists

Two of the four finalists from last week's PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic were ousted in the round of 64 Thursday, both taking their matches to seven games.

Doug Kent, who finished 2nd last week, lost to Mike Wolfe yesterday, losing a 2-0 lead.

Kent averaged 246.00 over his first two games, both victories, before Wolfe won the next three games, 228-224, 223-169 and 269-205. Kent forced a game seven with a 244-200 win in game six. Wolfe shot lights out in the deciding game, taking the win, 279-208.

Lonnie Waliczek, who lost to Kent in the semifinals last week, fell to David Traber in the round of 64 this week.

Waliczek fell behind early, finding himself down 2-0 before winning two straight with scores of 219 and 236 to even the match. Down 3-2, Waliczek won game six, 188-183 before losing game seven, 191-187.

Rematch!

An interesting match-up in the round of 32 features a rematch of last week's semifinal clash between Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Jason Hurd.

If the opening game was a sign of things to come, this match should feature some blistering scores. Williams won the opener, 279-278, striking on his first seven shots before converting a single pin spare in the 8th frame. Hurd's lone blemish in the first game was in the 5th frame, when he knocked down eight pins on his first shot before converting the spare.

  【PBA】 PBA BowlersParadise.com Open 【Round 1】

Duke Dominates

Norm Duke

Norm Duke, a 21-time PBA Tour title winner, advanced to the round of 32 for the first time in a standard PBA Tour event this season, defeating Robert Smith four-games-to-one in the round of 64 Thursday in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) BowlersParadise.com Open at Brunswick Zone Lakeside.

Duke shot the third 300 game of the tournament and averaged 266.40 in the five games.

"You've got to get a win under your belt otherwise it can be a roller coaster. You have to stop the bleeding at some point," said Duke, whose last title came in the 2003 PBA Greater Kansas City Classic in Blue Springs, Mo. "Maybe this will give me some confidence."

Duke, Clermont, Fla., struck 10 times in a row after a spare in the 1st frame to win game one, 289-219. After Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., won the second game, Duke struck on his last 11 shots to win game three, 290-201. Duke won game four, 226-225, when Smith left a 7-pin in the 10th frame, then finished out the match with a 300-212 win in game five.

Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., who has won two career tournaments in the St. Louis area, advanced with a 4-2 win over Ken Abner, Cincinnati. Weber's father, Dick, who was awarded the Commissioner's Exemption this week, fell to No. 6 Chris Barnes, 4-0.

Also advancing to the round of 64 was last week's PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic champion Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., who beat amateur Robby Spigner, 4-1. Williams is one PBA Tour title shy of tying Earl Anthony's all-time record of 41.

Johnson Moves Straight into Round of 32

Chris Johnson

Last season's PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Johnson is known for his ability to hook his shots. He used a straighter shot Thursday, however, to defeat Bryon Smith, Roseburg, Ore., four-games-to-three in the first of two sessions of the round of 64 in the PBA BowlersParadise.com Open at Brunswick Zone Lakeside.

"I had a good shot the whole time; just dead straight. I knew the shot would be there," said Johnson, Garland, Texas, who averaged an impressive 275.75 over his four victories. "I can play straight, too. That's no big deal."

Down 1-0, Johnson used games of 278 and 279 to take a 2-1 lead. After dropping game three in a sudden death roll-off, Johnson shot 205 in game five and fell behind 3-2. He responded with victories of 278-201 and 268-225 to advance to the round of 32.

No. 19 Danny Wiseman, Baltimore, took out No. 46 Mike DeVaney, Henderson, Nev., 257-236 in the seventh game and will next face No. 51 Shannon Buchan, who derailed PBA Hall of Famer No. 14 Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., winning their seventh game, 235-195.

Other matches featured PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., taking out Michael Fagan, Greenlawn, N.Y., 4-1. Another PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, advanced by topping Mike Edwards, Tulsa, 4-2.

【PBA】 PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic 【Final】

40!!!

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. became just the second bowler to reach 40 career PBA Tour titles when he defeated Doug Kent in the title match of the PBA Uniroyal Tire Classic, 268-248, Sunday at Freeway Lanes of Wickliffe.

The PBA Hall of Famer needed to double in the 10th frame to move within one win of the all-time Tour title winner, Earl Anthony (41).

Kent, Newark, N.Y., put pressure on Williams, striking from the 3rd through 8th frames to take a one pin lead heading into the 9th frame. With both working on strikes, Kent left a 10-pin while Williams threw one of his seven straight strikes to close out the game.

"Being able to have the opportunity to perform in a pressure situation and actually doing it is very satisfying. To get up there in the 10th frame needing to throw a strike and coming through, that is one of the best moments for a bowler," said Williams, who won $40,000 and an exemption for the 2005-06 season.

Williams defeated Jason Hurd, Titsuville, Fla., 268-186, in their semifinal match. Williams struck on nine of his first 10 shots while Hurd, who entered the match having marked in his last 45 frames, opened three times in the first five frames.

In the other semifinal, Kent defeated Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, in their semifinal, 247-198. Waliczek opened in the 2nd frame, missing the 4-pin and giving Kent, Newark, N.Y., the early lead. Kent capitalized, striking on his next six shots as Waliczek opened in the 8th to stamp Kentユs ticket to the finals.

Kent won $20,000 for 2nd while Hurd and Waliczek tied for 3rd and took home $10,000 apiece.
