【PBA】 Miller High Life Masters 【Final】 Wiseman Masters Miller Park
Danny Wiseman Only 17 athletes have tossed a perfect game on a Major League Baseball field. The PBA Tour's Danny Wiseman almost made it 18, as he captured the 2004 Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress Sunday at Miller Park, defeating Patrick Allen, 268-183 in the title match. Wiseman, who won $100,000 and earned a two-season PBA Tour exemption, opened the final match with eight strikes, leaving a 10-pin in the 9th frame to foil the perfect effort. After another single pin spare, Wiseman fittingly closed the book on his 11th career PBA Tour title with a strike. "All the greats that have won this tournament, you see there names when the hang the banners in the bowling center," said Wiseman of the Masters, a bowling tradition since 1951. "I have always wanted to win a major, and this is the one because of all the history behind it." Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., settled for the $50,000 runner-up prize after failing to strike until the 7th frame of the title match. He left four multi-pin spares in the game while Wiseman, the top seed from Baltimore, struck nine times in his only appearance in the stepladder finals format. Allen, the fourth seed, advanced to the title match via a 248-219 over Patrick Healey Jr., Flower Mound, Texas, in the semifinal. With Allen up three pins heading into the 7th frame, Allen struck on his final six shots to secure a spot in the title match. In the quarterfinal, Allen defeated amateur and 1999 ABC Masters Champion, Brian Boghosian, Agawam, Mass., 238-153. Allen, who was 2nd in the 1993 ABC Masters, struck in five of his first six frames while Boghosian struggled to find his mark, suffering four open frames. Healey collects $25,000 for his 3rd place finish in the PBA Tour's first of four majors this season while Boghosian takes home $15,000 for 4th.

Masters Down to Final Four
Brian Boghosian Amateur Brian Boghosian will be looking to become just the sixth bowler to win multiple Masters titles after he went 5-2 in match play and secured the No. 3 seed in Sunday's finals of the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress (ABC) at Miller Park. Boghosian, the 1999 ABC Masters champion, surprised 10th-seeded Patrick Allen, 608-579, in the finals of the winners' bracket in the three-game, total pin match-play format Saturday to secure a spot on the live ESPN finals. "It feels awesome," Boghosian said. "I know I can do it. It's just a matter of executing the shots and overcoming the nerves." The road to the finals was hardly easy for Boghosian, Agawam, Mass., whose margin of victory shrunk in each of his first four wins. He opened with an 83-pin victory over Justin Hromek in the Round of 64 before eventually sneaking past ABC Hall of Famer Norm Duke by just 18 pins in the Round of 16. Joining Boghosian is Danny Wiseman, Baltimore, Md., who beat Patrick Healey Jr., 658-638 in the Round of 8 to reach his first career Masters final. Wiseman, who will be seeded 1st for the finals, had a relatively easy route to the finals. He averaged 232.67 and a 78.4-pin margin of victory in his first five matches. Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., and Healey, Flower Mound, Texas, bounced back to win in the losers' bracket and qualify for Sunday's finals. Allen, seeded 4th, is appearing in his third Masters finals. He finished 5th last season and 2nd in the 1993 ABC Masters. Healey, seeded 2nd, will be bowling in his first Masters final.

Voss Vaults To Round of 16
Brian Voss Brian Voss, Alphretta, Ga., recorded a 619-618 three-game series win over Tom Smallwood, Flushing, Mich., Friday evening to advance to the round of 16 in the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress at AMF Bowlero. Voss, who averaged 206.33 in his win over Smallwood, needed 29 pins in the 10th frame of game three to win the match. Voss struck twice and knocked down nine pins to secure the victory and advance to the round of 16 in the Masters for the first time since 1990. "When it comes down to that situation and you succeed, it prepares you for the next time," Voss said of clinching the match with his final shot. "It's a competition that comes down to the heart and guts of the last couple of frames." In the second round of the loser's bracket, defending champion Walter Ray Williams, Jr. failed to strike with his first shot of the 10th frame in game three, knocking him out of the tournament. Williams opened the day with a 749-733 loss to Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., in the round of 64. Williams then defeated Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., 653-644, in the first round of the loser's bracket before falling to Joe Ciccone, Buffalo, N.Y., 710-692. No. 1 seed and 2004 PBA Player of the Year, Mika Koivuneimi, Hartland, Mich. lost his opening match to Mike Machuga, 731-588. In the loser's bracket, Koivuneimi fell to amateur Scott Pohl, Eagan, Minn, 667-632, knocking him out of the tournament. Pohl then went on to defeat Billy Orlikowski, Grand Rapids, Mich., 648-560, in the second round of the loser's bracket.
【PBA】 Miller High Life Masters 【Round 3】 Heading Into Match Play
Diandra Asbaty Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., will begin his quest for his second straight Masters title in the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress Friday at 4 p.m. CT with the round of 64, double-elimination match play at AMF Bowlero. Williams, a 39-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour winner, earned a bye with his win in last season's ABC Masters and will join the top 63 qualifiers remaining from the original 576-bowler field. Williams, seeded 32nd, will open up against fellow PBA Tour exempt bowler, Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y. Kent was 35th in qualifying with a 3,157 15-game pinfall. Diandra Asbaty, Chicago, was one of three females to advance to match play after qualifying with 3,180. She will face PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., who was 36th with 3,156 after qualifying. "My goal coming in was to stay focused and stay within myself," said Asbaty, the top female qualifier. "If you get wrapped up in everything around you, you get distracted. I can't try to chase anyone. I just have to concentrate on what I'm doing." Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, and Patrick Healey Jr., Flower Mound, Texas, tied for 1st with 3,332, but Koivuniemi will be the top seed in match play because he averaged 236.80 in his final five-game block opposed to Healey's 216.60 over his final five games. Overall, 31 of the 58 PBA Tour exempt bowlers remain alive for the $100,000 top prize and two-season PBA Tour exemption given to the winner of the Masters.

Andres is Automatic
Andres Gomez Andres Gomez became the second amateur in two days to lead the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress at the AMF Bowlero. Gomez, Colombia, shot a 1,130 five-game pinfall on Thursday to bring his two-day qualifying total to a 2,283 10-game pinfall to overtake fellow amateur Chris Rebstock, who led after the first round of qualifying Wednesday. A 268 in his 5th and final game of the night pushed Gomez from 4th to 1st, just ahead of Michael Haugen Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., who finished 23 pins behind with 2,260. Gomez's Thursday average of 226.00 was actually lower than his Wednesday average of 230.60. "I struggled in the first three games, but finally the lanes were drier and I was able to finish well," said Gomez. "I wanted to bowl well today because I bowled so well yesterday. I knew that if I bowled decent, I would probably make the top 63." After the top 144 bowl another five games Friday morning, the top 63 bowlers plus defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr. advance to match play, which begins Friday at 4 p.m. Gomez missed the cut in last season's ABC Masters. His best finish in a PBA Tour event came in the 2003 VIA Bowling Open in Orlando, Fla., where he finished in the top 32 before losing to eventual champion Chris Hayden. Haugen is looking for his first career title despite finishing 8th in the 2003-04 PBA Tour World Point Rankings. He made a 154-pin improvement over Wednesday's performance to move up from 78th to 2nd. Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., is 3rd with 2,256. Patrick Healey Jr. is 4th with 2,249 while Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y. is 5th with 2,247. Diandra Asbaty, Chicago, Ill., is the highest qualifying woman with 2,175, and is tied for 14th. |

Amateur Rebstock Takes Early Lead
Chris Rebstock Amateur Chris Rebstock, Middletown, Conn., shot a 1,171 five-game pinfall to take a narrow lead over Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., after the first round of qualifying Wednesday in the Miller High Life Masters presented by the American Bowling Congress at AMF Bowlero. Rebstock, who is bowling in his first ABC event since 2000, recorded a 237 en route to his 1st place finish. Rebstock sits eight pins ahead of Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., who finished 2nd with 1,163. "I'm in a good frame of mind and very relaxed," Rebstock, who bowls competitively in a club league, said. "I converted on a baby split (2-7) early and my swing just got loose. Tomorrow, I'll be able to bowl on fresh oil, so I'll use a stronger ball." Rebstock, bowling in just his second PBA Tour event, is no stranger to success in PBA events as he advanced to the round of 32 at the 2003 PBA Cambridge Credit Classic in Windsor Locks, CT last season. Patrick Allen defeated Rebstock, four-games-to-three. Angelo, the 2003-04 PBA World Point Rankings leader, shot 215 or better in each of his five games to capture 2nd. Brian LeClair, Athens, N.Y., is 3rd with 1,157 while Andres Gomez, Orlando, Fla., is 4th with 1,153. Tom Smallwood, Flushing, Mich., rounded out the top 5 with a 1,153. Tish Johnson, Henderson, Nev., is the top female qualifier, finishing 18th with 1,118. Johnson is one of 11 females bowling this week, setting a new record for female participants in Masters event. |
