【PBA】 PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic 【Final】

Scroggins is the Real Deal

Mike Scroggins

Mike Scroggins picked up his first PBA Tour title since 1992 after defeating Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala., Fla., 270-248, in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic Sunday at Bel-Air Bowl.

After striking with his first shot in the 10th frame, Scroggins needed to knock down five pins with his final two shots to take home his first title in 197 Tour events. Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, struck with his next shot giving him the title, a spot on next year's exempt Tour and a $40,000 first-place prize. Despite opening the game with two spares in his first three frames, Scroggins battled back throwing nine consecutive strikes to end the game.

"With the crowd getting pumped up, I stayed focused," Scroggins, who threw 18 strikes in his two matches, said. "I usually throw two or three bad shots, but today I didn't lose my focus. It was the real deal."

Williams defeated Mika Koivuniemi, Ann Arbor, Mich., 268-200, to advance to a title game for the fourth time this season. Koivuniemi fell behind by 46 pins after leaving the 6 and 10 pins in the 6th frame and couldn't recover, moving Williams into his 76th career title match.

Scroggins picked up his first televised victory of the season, with a 259-204 win over Dennis Horan Jr., Temecula, Calif., in the first semifinal. Needing only two pins in the 10th to shut out Horan, Scroggins converted a spare, then knocked down nine to advance into the finals.

In the wildcard match, Koivuniemi defeated Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., 234-189. Despite throwing eight of 12 strikes, it was Koivuniemi's incredible pickup of the 4-6-10 split in the 8th frame that sealed his place in the semifinals.

Williams won $20,000 for his 2nd place finish. Koivuniemi and Horan won $10,000 for 3rd place while Couch earned $9,000 for 5th place.

Scroggins Streaks to Final Round

Mike Scroggins

Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, will be making his 5th championship round appearance of the season after defeating Jeff Smith, four-games-to-none in the round of 8 Saturday evening in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic at St. Clair Bowl.

Scroggins, who is 0-4 on television this season, took the first game with a 279-236 win. The 14-year Tour pro averaged 223.00 over games two and three en route to a commanding 3-0 lead over Smith, Little Falls, Minn.

Scroggins saved his best for last, firing a 299 in his final game to move on to his 13th career televised finals appearance Sunday.

"I struggled in the first nine-game set and switched to another ball on Friday morning," said Scroggins, who was 45th after the first day of qualifying. "That's when I started killing (the pins). I usually go through five or six balls but have just used the one since Friday."

In other action, Walter Ray Williams Jr. rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to beat Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., 4-2. After opening in the 1st frame of the 5th game, Williams struck in 22 of his next 24 frames to close out the match.

Couch, the highest qualifier to reach the round of 8, will be the wild card in Sunday's finals. The 11-time Tour title winner will take on Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, who defeated Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., 4-2.

Dennis Horan Jr., Temecula, Calif., will be making his second championship round appearance of the season after beating Jess Stayrook, San Diego, 4-1. With the match tied 1-1, Horan used scores of 222, 257 and 198 to take the final three games.

Stayrook Gaining Ground

Jess Stayrook

Jess Stayrook moved one step closer to advancing to his first finals appearance since 2000 with a four-games-to-three win over Hugh Miller Saturday afternoon in the round of 16 in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic at St. Clair Bowl.

A 17-year Tour veteran, Stayrook, San Diego, won his first two games before Miller, Seattle, squared the match at two with a 237-207 win. After they split the next two games, Stayrook dominated the decisive seventh game, striking in his first six frames, and went on to a 277-236 victory.

"I'm trying to not think about winning right now, and just focusing on every shot," said Stayrook, whose best finish this season was 23rd in the PBA Cambridge Credit Classic. "I've had to change my equipment and style a lot this week and hopefully I will find the right shot tonight."

Stayrook will face now face Dennis Horan Jr., Temecula, Calif., who took down last week's winner in the PBA Days Inn Open, Steve Jaros, 4-2. Down 2-1, Horan won three close games by an average of only 12 pins, winning 237-230, 214-193 and 229-221 in game seven.

Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., swept rookie Tom Smallwood, Flushing, Mich., in four games and is assured of making Sunday's five-man finals as the top remaining bowler from the first 18 games of qualifying. Couch took the first two games of the match and fired a 299 in the third game, leaving the 7-pin on his last shot, before finishing off Smallwood in game four, 268-190.

Jeff Smith, Little Falls, Minn., continues his perfect run through match play after toppling Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, 4-0. However, to make it to the finals, Smith will have to get through Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, who defeated Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., 4-2. With Scroggins up 3-2, the sixth game came down to the 10th frame. Scroggins struck, then spared, to force Bohn to double, but after striking on his first ball, Bohn left the 7-pin and lost 239-231.

Couch Is No Slouch

Jason Couch

Jason Couch averaged 252.25 in his four-games-to-none sweep of Riga Kalfas Friday evening in the round of 32 in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic at St. Clair Bowl.

Couch, Clermont, Fla., who is the top remaining qualifier, opened up with a 258-227 win. After winning 258-187 in game two, Couch was down to Kalfas, Florence, Ky., in the third game, but Kalfas opened in the 9th frame and Couch took advantage by striking out to win 238-212.

"The lanes really favor my style this week," said Couch, who won game four 255-237. "I've got my work cut out for me in my match tomorrow with (Tom) Smallwood because he's been on a hot streak lately."

Smallwood advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., 4-2. A rookie from Flushing, Mich., Smallwood struck on nine of 12 shots in the sixth game en route to toppling Steelsmith, 257-206.

Smallwood, who was 59th in the PBA World Point Rankings coming into the week, was amongst four bowlers currently outside the top 50 in points, to win their match.

Left-hander Hugh Miller, Seattle, who is currently 53rd in the World Point Rankings, defeated Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, 4-2 to move inside the top 50 in the race to claim a spot in next year's exempt Tour. The other two, Jess Stayrook (94th) and Jeff Smith (110th), swept two of the top five point leaders on Tour in their victories.

Stayrook, San Diego, beat top qualifier Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., 4-0, as did Smith, Little Falls, Minn., who defeated point leader Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y.

Notes:There were a record seven sweeps in the round of 32 (Couch, Shafer, Torgersen, Koivuniemi, Smith, Bohn, and Stayrook). The previous record was six.

Allen, one of nine lefties in the top 10, averaged 237.89 over his nine-game set including a high score of 268 in game seven.

"This (oil) pattern is very conducive to the left side," said Allen, who is currently 5th in the PBA World Point Rankings. "I had the same shot I had yesterday and just went with it."

A two-time Tour winner, Allen is the No. 3 seed for tonight's round of 32 match play, and will face Jess Stayrook, San Diego, who finished qualifying 31st with 3,954.

  【PBA】 PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic 【Round 1 - B Squad】

Smith Steals the Show

Jeff Smith

Jeff Smith shot a 2,295 pinfall over nine games Thursday to take the lead after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic at St. Clair Bowl.

Smith, Little Falls, Minn., had a low game of 224 in his first game, and shot better than 250 five times, averaging 255.00. A part-time bowler since 1993, Smith was sick with the flu, and took off nine consecutive tournaments after finishing 148th in the PBA Toledo Open before returning to action two weeks ago.

"I think getting out of the cold weather in Minnesota and going to Arizona really helped me," said Smith, who finished tied for 3rd in the PBA Pepsi Open. "I started out a little slow today, but my shot came to me and I didn't have to adjust very much from lane to lane. I had high expectations this week and I feel pretty relaxed right now."

Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., averaged 263.45 over his first seven games, but shot 217 and 225 in his last two games, and is nine pins behind Smith for the lead. Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., who led after the first squad, slid to 5th with 2,128.

Another bowler who took significant time off, Mike Aulby, shot 2,080 and is in 9th place. Aulby, Indianapolis, who is retiring full-time from the Tour at the end of the season, opened his own hockey rink and had not bowled since the PBA Empire State Open.

Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., rolled 1,857 and missed the cut, finishing tied for 99th place. Other bowlers not making the top 64 include Randy Pedersen (76th), Norm Duke (86th), Robert Smith (103rd), and leading Rookie of the Year candidate Chris Johnson, who shot 1,769 and finished 127th.

Notes: Tommy Jones and Bryan Goebel both shot 1,916 to tie for the 64th place, but Goebel failed to show up for the one game roll-off, and Jones advanced to tomorrow's round of 64. Jason Queen withdrew after throwing his first ball due to the stomach flu.

Strong as Steel

Rick Steelsmith

Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., leads after early first round qualifying with a 2,128 nine-game pinfall Thursday afternoon in the PBA Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic at St. Clair Bowl.

Steelsmith, the 1988 PBA Rookie of the Year, started off slowly with games of 177, 212 and 213. He turned it on in game four with a score of 265 before averaging 252.20 in his final five games, including a 290 in game seven.

"(This season) has been a really long haul for me," said Steelsmith, who took last week off. "I was starting to burn out a little bit. Last week, spending time with my family made my mind a little fresher."

Richard Wolfe, Vienna, Va., is 2nd with 2,100 while Blaise Bedolla, Roseburg, Ore., and Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, are tied at 3rd with 2,079. Seattle native Hugh Miller, currently 53rd in the PBA World Point Rankings, stands in 5th with 2,063.

Last week's PBA Days Inn Open champion Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., sits in 8th with 2,057, while Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., is 13th with 2,002.

Currently 6th in the PBA World Point Rankings, Tommy Jones, Greenville, S.C., is in danger of missing the cut as he sits in a tie for 40th with Bryan Goebel, Shawnee, Kan., with 1,196.

Notes: Nicholas Wissinger IV tossed a 300-game in his fourth game of the day...he had shot 157 and 172 in his prior two games.

Jaros Does It Again

Steve Jaros

With his first strike in the 10th frame, Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., defeated Dave Traber, Bull Valley, Ill., 260-235, to win the PBA Days Inn Open Sunday at Don Carterユs All Star Lanes West.

Jaros, who picked up his second Tour title this year and the fifth in his career, was down early, throwing two spares and two strikes in the first four frames. Traber let Jaros back in the game with three consecutive spares beginning in the 6th. Jaros ended the game with eight straight strikes to become the sixth player to win multiple Tour titles this season.

"This is absolutely incredible," Jaros, who won $40,000 said. "I've always wanted to win multiple titles in a season. This is one opportunity I didn't want to pass up, to step up and throw the shot in the 9th and 10th to clinch it. I'd bowled really great on Friday and really rode that momentum into the finals."

Traber struck out in the 10th to win the second semifinal, 222-211, over Jim Tomek Jr., Camp Hill, Pa. Despite opening with a spare and a 6-7-10 split, Traber battled back to take a 192-191 lead after nine by converting a 1-2-10 washout. With the three strikes in the final frame, Traber moved onto the finals for the first time in 23 events.

Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., fell behind early against Jaros in the first semifinal with two splits in the first three frames. He had an opportunity to tie the game, however, with three strikes in the 10th. Machuga left the 10-pin with his second shot, giving Jaros the 226-216 win and placing him in the championship game for the second time this year.

In the wildcard match, Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., couldn't convert a 4-10 split in the 7th frame, giving Tomek the advantage and placing him into the semifinals with 224-190 win.

Traber won $20,000 for his second place finish. Tomek and Machuga won $10,000 for third place while Angelo earned $9,000 for fifth place.

Machuga Holds a Clinic

Mike Machuga

In the first game, Machuga, Erie, Pa., struck in six of his first seven shots en route to a 235-212 win. After winning the second game 217-199, Machuga began a strike-fest that saw him strike on 20 of his next 24 shots over two games.

"Chris (Barnes) always bowls well in match play and you can't go into the match with him with a game plan. You just have to out-bowl him," said Machuga, who took the final game 277-217. "I made a ball change on the right lane at the beginning of the third game, and it worked well for me the last two games."

Machuga will take on Thomas Smallwood, Flushing, Mich., in the round of 8 after defeating Tony Reyes, San Bruno, Calif., 4-3. Archer Right at Home

D.J. Archer

In a Lone Star State battle, D.J. Archer, McKinney, Texas, averaged 270.25 in his four-games-to-none sweep of top qualifier Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, in the round of 32 match play Friday evening in the PBA Days Inn Open at Don Carter's All Star Lanes West.

Archer, a two-year pro looking for his first career title, opened up the match with a 256-234 victory. He followed that up with a 268-160 win before taking game three 279-202. A recent finalist in the 2004 ABC Masters, Archer won game four 278-245.

"It was one of those matches where everything falls," Archer, who struck in 38 of 46 frames, said. "I had a perfect arm swing and ball reaction."

Archer will face Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the round of 16 after Williams, Ocala, Fla., narrowly defeated Mitchell Beasley, Arlington, Texas, 4-3.

Williams won a tight game seven, 236-228, which came down to the final frame. Down one pin heading into the 10th frame, Williams doubled then finished with a nine-count, forcing Beasley to double. Beasley's first shot hit the pocket, but left a solid 10-pin to give Williams the win.

Other sweeps featured Jim Tomek Jr., Camp Hill, Pa., in a 4-0 win over last week's champion, Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., while Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., swept Chris Johnson, Garland, Texas.

In other action, Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., defeated Kevin Mitchell, Tulsa, Okla., 4-2, and will face the 2003 PBA Tournament of Champions titlist, Patrick Healey Jr., Mexico, who dropped Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, 4-1.

Notes: This marks the second time this season that Malott earned the top qualifying position before he was swept in the round of 32...in the PBA Medford Open, Malott led the field with an 4,200 18-game pinfall before losing 4-0 to Chris Barnes...Barnes averaged 262.00 in that match...this week did not prove fruitful for most of the bowlers "on the bubble" in the PBA World Point Rankings...of the bowlers who were ranked 45-62 entering the week, just three advanced to match play...all three - Chris Hayden (53rd), Eric Forkel (54th) and Hugh Miller (55th) - lost in the round of 32.

Malott Moves On

Wes Malott

Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, used a 4,211 18-game pinfall to take the lead after the round of 64 Friday afternoon in the PBA Days Inn Open at Don Carter's All Star Lanes West.

Malott, who was the top qualifier after 18 games in the PBA Medford Open earlier this season, shot three games of 240 or better today and seven overall in the last two days. Malott trailed Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., by 13 pins heading into today's competition, but threw a 269 in game four to put him in the lead for the rest of the round.

"I just need to stay slow with my fundamental game and hopefully the breaks will go my way," Malott said about tonight's match play. "My pinfall drops when I get into match play, and I seem to be matched up against someone that is hot."

Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., finished second with 4,104. Jim Tomek, Jr., Camp Hill, Pa., qualified 3rd with 4,100 while Patrick Healey Jr., Mexico, and Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, rounded out the top 5 with 4,098 and 4,093, respectively.

Smith is Still On Top

Robert Smith

Robert Smith continued his recent hot streak by shooting 2,177 over nine games and holds the lead after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Days Inn Open at Don Carterユs All Star Lanes West.

Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., who won last week's PBA Odor-Eaters Open in Tucson, charged into the lead with games of 256, 259 and 269 in his final three games and averaged 241.89 on the day. The six-time titlist holds a 13-pin lead over Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, who shot 2,164.

"I'm making good choices and letting my game take over instead of trying to force it," said Smith, who has won two Tour titles this season. "Things are starting to come around. I'm not panicking as much I used to when I would throw a bad shot here and there."

Chris Johnson, Garland, Texas, who is the leading candidate for PBA Rookie of the Year, averaged 230.22 to shoot 2,072 and is 3rd. Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., attempts to climb up from 43rd in the PBA World Point Rankings after rolling 2,061 to place him in 7th.

Reigning PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., was the top bowler on the second squad and sits in 6th after shooting 2,063. Williams, who stormed back from 57th place last week to make the finals, is looking to make the finals for the fifth time in seven weeks after not making any finals appearances in the first half of the season.

After five weeks off nursing a left quadricepts injury, Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., didn't skip a beat and was tied for 55th after shooting 1,915.

Notes: After being perfect in all 16 PBA Tour events this season, Doug Kent finished 110th to miss his first cut. He is now tied with Tommy Jones and Brad Angelo for the most cashes on Tour.

Smith's Hot Streak Continues

Robert Smith

Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., took the lead after early qualifying with a 2,177 nine-game pinfall Thursday afternoon in the PBA Days Inn Open at Don Carter's All Star Lanes West.

Smith, fresh off his victory in last week's PBA Odor-Eaters Open, opened up the day with games of 223 and 247. After shooting 188 in game three, the Thousand Oaks, Calif., resident rebounded with his high-game of 279.

"I'm making good choices and letting my game take over instead of forcing it," said Smith, a six-time Tour titlist, who's captured two victories this season. "Things are starting to come around. I'm not panicking as much I used to when I would throw a bad shot here and there."

Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, sits in 2nd place with 2,164 while Chris Johnson, Garland, Texas, is 3rd with 2,072.

Norm Duke, who spent the last five weeks recovering from an injured left quadriceps muscle, shot 1,915 and is in 30th place. Pete Weber, St. Ann., Mo., finished tied for 19th with 1,979 a week after withdrawing with a sore right hand.

Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., currently 43rd in the PBA World Point Rankings, shot 2,061 and is 6th, while fellow left-hander Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., is 15th with 2,002.

Smith Strikes Twice to Take Odor-Eaters Open

Robert Smith

Needing to strike on his first two shots in the 10th frame, Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., threw two perfect shots en route to defeating Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., 227-218, and win the PBA Odor-Eaters Open Sunday at Golden Pin Lanes.

Williams left the door open for Smith after converting a spare to start the 10th, then threw a strike with his last shot, which forced Smith to strike twice. Smith nailed the both shots and knocked down eight with his last, giving him his second Tour title of the season and the sixth of his career.

"Needing two in the 10th, especially against Walter Ray, it's almost story book", Smith, who won $40,000 said. "You don't want to give a guy a chance to lead especially through six frames. I knew I needed to jump on him."

Williams defeated Bryon Smith, Roseburg, Ore., 224-191, in the second semifinal despite opening with three consecutive spares. The six-time Player of the Year struck with his next five shots, giving him a 195-151 lead after eight frames. Smith's fate was sealed with a 4-9 split in the 8th, missing both pins with his second shot.

The first semifinal saw Robert Smith defeat Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., 235-211. Steelsmith had a hard time throwing strikes, tossing seven spares, including six in the first eight frames, which allowed Smith to lead wire-to-wire.

The wildcard match came down to the 10th frame, as Joe Ciccone, down two pins, threw a strike in his first shot before failing to convert a 4-6-7 split. Bryon Smith struck out, moving him into the semifinals with a 268-255 win.

Williams won $20,000 for his second place finish. Bryon Smith and Steelsmith won $10,000 for third place while Ciccone, Buffalo, N.Y., earned $9,000 for fifth place.

Smith Clinches Spot In Finals

Bryon Smith

Bryon Smith, Roseburg, Ore., threw five straight strikes to end game five and defeat Joe Ciccone, Buffalo, N.Y., four games-to-one in the round of 8 in the PBA Odor-Eaters Open Saturday at Golden Pin Lanes.

With the match tied 1-1, Smith won game three, 258-187, then converted the 6-7 split in game four, giving him a 257-236 win. In the fifth and final game, Smith led 157-156 after seven frames, but Ciccone threw a spare in the 8th frame, opening the door for Smith. Smith struck out, securing the win and putting him in the finals for the first time since the 2003 ABC Masters.

"It's been a good week," Smith, who stood 51st on the PBA World Point Rankings heading into this week, said. "I've been struggling since the second week of the Tour. I haven't been able to put anything together. I've practiced more this year than I have the last four years. I got the breaks I needed and I threw it good. I got rewarded for all the practice."

In a round of 8 rematch, Smith will go against Ciccone in Sunday's wildcard match. Ciccone was the top qualifier among the four bowlers who lost in the round of 8, therefore earning the wildcard spot.

Rick Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., swept Bob Learn Jr., Erie, Pa., 4-0 to advance to the finals for the second time this season.

Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., used a 10-9 sudden death, one-ball roll-off win to take game five, and the match, over Brandon Hilgendorf, Clinton Flagship, Mich., 4-1.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., swept Mike Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., 4-0. Williams, who dropped just two games in match play this week, has averaged 246.69 this week and earlier set the PBA all-time, nine-game pinfall total with 2,367, Friday morning.

Williams Wins a Classic Match Over Bohn

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

In the end, the round of 16 match Saturday between Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Parker Bohn III was all it was built up to be. When the dust settled, Williams won the epic battle four-games-to-two in the PBA Odor-Eaters Open at Golden Pin Lanes.

After Williams, Ocala, Fla., took the first game, Bohn stormed back to win the next two. In game five, Bohn, Jackson, N.J., needed only to strike in the 10th frame, but left the 4-7-10 split to give Williams the win, 257-243, and tie the match up at two.

"That really turned the match around because if he won that game, I would have had a big deficit to come back from," said Williams, who has won 39 career PBA Tour titles.

The fifth game was easily their best yet, as both struck on their first nine shots. Williams sealed the match on his end with his second 300-game of the tournament to put the pressure on Bohn. After striking on his first shot in the 10th, Bohn left the 6-10 to give the game to Williams, 300-288.

"I knew I had to strike out because Parker (Bohn) had a great line that game," said Williams, who won the sixth game 247-228. "The way we were going, I thought we might be at it for a while, but his second ball in the 10th came up just a bit light."

Robert Smith, Thousand Oaks, Calif., advanced to his first round of 8 since winning the PBA Banquet Open the first week of the season. Smith averaged 264 over five games to defeat Chris Barnes, Dallas, 4-1.

In other matches, Joe Ciccone, the 2000 PBA Rookie of the Year, dropped his first game to Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, but fought back to win the next four games and take the match, 4-1. Ciccone joins Mike Edwards and Brandon Hilgendorf in making their first round of 8 appearances of the season.

Angelo Climbs Into Round of 16

Brad Angelo

Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., used a 29-25 roll-off following game five to defeat Wayne Garber, Modesto, Calif., four games-to-one in the round of 32 Friday in the PBA Odor-Eaters Open at Golden Pin Lanes.

Angelo, who has made two finals appearances in the last four weeks, tied Garber in game five, 215-215. After trading strikes in the one-ball, sudden death roll-off and nine-spares in the second roll-off, Angelo struck in the third extra frame while Garber knocked down six.

"This is tough mentally when you know you have to shoot 230 to keep pace," said Angelo, who entered the day in a tie for 62nd place. "I think everyone out here feels the pressure."

Angelo will face Bob Learn Jr., Erie, Pa., Saturday morning in the round of 16. Learn advanced by defeating Tim Criss, Bel Air, Md., 4-1.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., swept Matt Ballard, Peoria, Ariz., 4-0 and will face Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J. Saturday morning. Bohn advanced by defeating Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., 4-3. Bohn and Williams finished qualifying earlier Friday, first and second, respectively.

Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., knocked off Eugene McCune, Munster, Ind., 4-0. Couch used a 10-9 roll-off to proceed into tomorrow's action. Couch will face Mike Edwards, Tulsa, Okla., who advanced by defeating Brian Voss, Alphretta, Ga., 4-3. In game seven, Edwards nearly threw a perfect game in the 278-217 win.

Brandon Hilgendorf, Clinton Township, Mich., defeated Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., 4-3. In one of the few seven-game matches of the evening, Hilgendorf struck with his first shot in the 10th frame to secure the win.

Back From the Brink

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., 57th after the first round of qualifying, set a PBA nine-game pinfall record, and vaulted up to 2nd place after the round of 64 in the PBA Odor-Eaters Open Friday afternoon at Golden Pin Lanes.

Williams' 2,367 nine-game pinfall Friday, good for a 263.00 average, was 10 pins better than Dave D'Entremont's 2,357 in the 2002 PBA Flagship Open. The six-time PBA Player of the Year finished qualifying this week with a 4,417 18-game pinfall.

"In my last game yesterday, I started hooking the ball more," said Williams, who featured games of 300, 290, 289 and 279. "Today, I took some balls and shined them up good. That allowed me to hook my shots really well...it just seemed to be perfect."

Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., also made a jump in the standings after averaging 258.44 Friday. He began the day in 52nd place, but rebounded to finish with 4,388, good for 4th heading into match play.

Parker Bohn III, Jackson, N.J., continued to lead qualifying with 4,531, a new PBA season-high. Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, was 3rd with 4,395 while 2000 PBA Rookie of the Year Joe Ciccone, was 5th with 4,351.

This could be a big week for Bohn, who is currently 54th in the PBA World Point Rankings. If the season ended this week, titlists and the remaining top 49 in the point rankings would be included in next season's exempt tour.

Richard Wolfe, Vienna, Va., defeated D.J. Archer, Amarillo, Texas, in a one-game roll-off to determine the 32nd spot after qualifying.

Notes: Bohn's 4,531 18-game pinfall bettered Patrick Allen's 4,518 in the PBA Cambridge Credit Classic earlier this season.

  【PBA】 PBA Odor-Eaters Open 【Round 1 - B Squad】

Bohn Bounces Back

Parker Bohn III

Despite being entrenched in one of the worst stretches of his 20-year career, Parker Bohn III battled back to shoot a 2,326 nine-game pinfall and holds the lead after the opening round of the PBA Odor-Eaters Open at Golden Pin Lanes.

Bohn, Jackson, N.J., started off with a 300-game to set the tone for the rest of his day. After his low game of 211 in game four, Bohn shot 255, 279, and 258 over his next three games and ended with a 268.

"Everything I've done lately has been everything but right," said Bohn, who is currently 54th in the PBA World Point Rankings. "It's been like a 12-round fight with Mike Tyson, and I don't know why I keep getting up. I felt really good bowling out there today, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. I'll take it game by game."

Bohn holds a 17-pin lead over Bob Learn, Erie, Pa., who set a torrid early scoring pace of his own, averaging 274 in his first five games, including a perfect game of his own to start the round. However, Learn tailed off toward the end of his nine-game set, shooting 223 and 197, in games six and seven, respectively, to give Bohn the advantage.

PBA Hall of Famer Steve Cook, Granite Bay, Calif., who is only competing in his third event since being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, sits in 11th place with 2,170. Last week's U.S. Open champion Pete Weber bowed out after the second game due to a sore right hand.

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Tom Candiotti averaged 201.22 and finished 163rd. Candiotti is the second former pitcher to compete on Tour this season following John Burkett's 185th place finish in the ABC Masters.

  【PBA】 PBA Odor-Eaters Open 【Round 1 - A Squad】

Jones and LeClair Share Top Spot

Tommy Jones

Tommy Jones, Greenville, S.C., and Brian LeClair, Athens, N.Y., share the lead with a 2,213 nine-game pinfall after early qualifying in the PBA Odor-Eaters Open Thursday afternoon at Golden Pin Lanes.

Jones, the 2002 PBA Rookie of the Year, tossed games of 244, 244 and 235 in games six through eight. He held a 64-pin lead heading into the final game, in which he tossed 190.

"I didn't bowl very well that last game because fatigue was setting in," said Jones, who bowled 51 games in last week's 61st U.S. Open. "It's definitely a goal to win, but right now I have to stay consistent and make sure I have a job next year."

LeClair, a 20-year pro looking for his first Tour title, started out hot with games of 279, 247 and 267. After his low game of 191, he closed out the day with a 254 performance to tie Jones.

Joe Ciccone, Buffalo, N.Y., is 3rd, just one pin behind the leaders. Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., is 4th with 2,190 while Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., rounded out the top 5 with 2,174.

Some players in danger of missing the cut include Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., who sits in 34th place with 2,050, and Del Ballard Jr., currently in 39th place with 2,043.

Former Major League pitcher and current ESPN analyst Tom Candiotti, Scottsdale, Ariz., averaged 201.22 and is currently in 83rd place with 1,811.

Notes: Jones is part of the Odor-Eaters squad for the PBA Team Championship...Danny Wiseman's pain in his right hand forced him to bowl left-handed in his final game.

Weber Wins Taxing U.S. Open

Pete Weber

In a shootout between two PBA Hall of Famers, Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., defeated, Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., 231-178, to win the 61st U.S Open presented by Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Sunday in the Anaheim Convention Center.

Weber, who picked up his third U.S. Open title, seventh major Tour title and 31st career title, took advantage of Voss' open in the 7th frame by striking in two of his next three shots. Needing seven pins in the 10th to secure the win, Weber threw the ball straight down the middle of the lane for a strike, giving him the $100,000 first-place prize and three-year Tour exemption.

"I found a pretty good shot and just went with it," Weber, a leading candidate for PBA Player of the Year, said. "I said at the beginning of the week that you have to be patient, keep the ball in play and make your spares. I stayed calm all week and when it was time to let my emotions go, I let them go."

In the semifinals, Voss defeated Chris Barnes, Dallas, 214-193, placing him in the final game of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career. Heading into the 8th frame, Barnes needed to strike out to advance, but couldn't convert a 4-6-7-9-10 split, paving the way for Voss.

Voss, who won $50,000, struck on 11 of 12 shots as he defeated defending U.S Open champion Walter Ray Williams, Ocala, Fla., 260-214 in the quarterfinals.

In the first match of the day, Williams struck twice in the 10th frame to secure a 228-198 victory over amateur Osku Palermaa, Finland, to advance. Palermaa was the first international amateur in the history of the PBA to make a televised finals.

Barnes earned $25,000 for his third place finish, while Williams and Palermaa earned $15,000 and $10,000, respectively.

Weber Looking For Third Open Title

Pete Weber

Three PBA Hall of Famers headline the five finalists for the 61st U.S. Open presented by Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. The finalists were decided Saturday night with the final eight game set of round-robin match play at Fountain Bowl.

Pete Weber, Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Brian Voss advanced to the final round, along with 1998 PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Barnes and amateur Osku Palermaa, who uses an unusual, two-handed bowling style.

Weber, St. Ann, Mo., is the No. 1 seed after beating eventual No. 2 seed Chris Barnes in their final game to decide seeding, 247-211. Weber finished match play with a 16-7-1 record and a 5,732 51-game pinfall while Barnes was 17-7 with 5,844.

"In this kind of format whenever you're the number one seed that's perfect," said Weber, who will be looking for his third U.S. Open crown. "I really can't ask for much more than that."

A five-time Tour titlist, Barnes, Dallas, will be making his third major finals appearance of the season. He was 3rd in the 2003 PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions and 2nd in the 2004 ABC Masters.

Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., defeated Williams, Ocala, Fla., 230-212 for the third seed. A 22-time Tour titlist, Voss converted a 7-10 split in the 7th frame to secure his finals slot. Williams, the No. 4 seed, will be looking to defend his title and earn his seventh career major victory.

Palermaa, a Finland native, will be the first international amateur and the fifth amateur overall to appear in a U.S. Open final since 1971 after defeating 2003 PBA Rookie of the Year Brad Angelo, 203-167 in their final match.
