Koivuniemi Getting the Job Done

Mika Koivuniemi

Mika Koivuniemi jumped to the top of the PBA World Point Rankings with a 258-181 victory against Brad Angelo Thursday in the title match of the PBA Reno Open at the National Bowling Stadium.

Koivuniemi, Finland, struck from the 5th frame on and was helped by two Angelo splits that decidedly swung the match in Koivuniemi's favor. Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., averaged 249.50 in match play, but couldn't find his shot in the title match.

"My hat is off to Mika," said Angelo, who won $20,000. "He bowled great on a pattern that doesn't favor him and he took advantage of it all week."

Since arriving in Reno, Koivuniemi has bowled 80 games over 10 consecutive days at the National Bowling Stadium. In that span, Koivuniemi has two finals appearances, including a 3rd place finish in last week's ABC Masters, and has averaged 221.42.

"I was hungry enough because of what happened last week," said Koivuniemi, who won $40,000 and took his 4th career PBA Tour title. "My game is straight and hard and this pattern is for the guys who hook it so I had to work hard to get myself through this week."

Koivuniemi started his title run in the semifinals where he faced Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio. Kretzer, who defeated Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., 258-235 in the wildcard match, left the 3-4-6-7-10 split in the 8th frame and only knocked down three pins to hand the match to Koivuniemi, 236-213.

In the first semifinal, Angelo and Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, held a strikefest with each bowler striking eight times. However, Fleming left the 4-9 split in the 6th frame and only knocked down the 4-pin, and Angelo marched on to the first championship round victory of his career, 258-235.

Fleming Headed to Finals for the First Time this Season

Paul Fleming

Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, struck in 10 of 12 shots and advanced to the finals of the PBA Reno Open by sweeping Peter Hernandez, Miami, four-games-to-none in the round of 8 Saturday at the National Bowling Stadium.

Fleming, who finished last season ranked 17th in the PBA World Point Rankings but has struggled this season, defeated Hernandez 278-256 for the win. His victory placed him in the finals for the first time since the 2003 PBA VIA Open in Orlando, Fla.

Fleming, the 1999 PBA Rookie of the Year, dominated the entire match, starting off with a 235-195 win in the first game and a 238-171 win in game two. In the third game, Fleming walked away with a 266-225 win. Fleming's victory assures him of his highest finish of the season, as his previous best was 13th in the PBA Toledo Open in November.

"I just had one thought in my mind, to keep my feet moving," Fleming said. "It was a big relief because I've kind of struggled for most of the year. Tomorrow, I'll just bowl my game because that's what got me here."

Mika Koivuniemi, Ann Arbor, Mich., defeated Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., 4-2, to advance to his second consecutive finals appearance and his fifth of the season. Last week, Koivuniemi finished 3rd in the ABC Masters. Koivuniemi jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Waliczek came back to win games four and five. In the sixth and final game, Waliczek needed to strike out to tie the game, but left the 10-pin on his final shot, and fell, 248-247.

Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., defeated Del Ballard Jr., North Richland Hills, Texas, 4-2. Angelo clinched the match with a 236-227 win in game six. Angelo, who has appeared in 34 career PBA tournaments, dropped just two games in match play this week.

Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, defeated Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., 4-3 to advance to the finals for the first time this season and the first time since the PBA World Championships last year in Taylor, Mich. Weber, the top qualifier among the four bowlers who lost in the round of 8, will have a rematch with Kretzer in the wildcard.

Angelo on a Roll in Reno

Brad Angelo

Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., remains perfect in match play after a four-games-to-none win over Michael Machuga, Wednesday afternoon in the PBA Reno Open at the National Bowling Stadium.

Angelo, who is currently the No. 1 ranked bowler in the PBA World Point Rankings with 146,485 points, has averaged 260 in his eight games in match play. After he took Machuga, Erie, Pa., 269-167 in the second game, Angelo struck 10 times in the third game en route to a 286-257 win.

"I feel as confident as I ever have," said Angelo, who will face Del Ballard Jr., in the round of 8. "I've bowled well this year before, but the guy I've faced has seemed to get all the breaks. Now, I think the breaks are starting to go my way."

Angelo is the highest qualifier remaining from the first 18 games of qualifying and is assured of making the five-man finals through the wildcard spot, even if he loses his round of 8 match to Ballard, North Richland Hills, Texas.

With their wins, Ballard, Paul Fleming and Brian Kretzer will all be making their first round of 8 appearance of the season. Fleming, Bedford, Texas, will take on Peter Hernandez, Miami, while Kretzer will face Hall of Famer Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo.

In the other round of 8 match, 3-time Tour titlist Mika Koivuniemi will go against Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan. Waliczek defeated Bob Learn Jr., Erie, Pa., 4-1 to advance while Koivuniemi lost the first game to Dave Arnold, Reno, Nev., but won his next four to win 4-1.

Ballard is Back to His Old Form

Del Ballard Jr.

Del Ballard Jr. defeated Tim Criss four-games-to-three Tuesday night in the PBA Reno Open at the National Bowling Stadium.

Ballard, who hasn't won a title since the 1993 U.S. Open, took an early 3-1 lead before Criss, Bel Air, Md., came back to tie the match at three. In the seventh game, Ballard, North Richland Hills, Texas, struck in nine of his first 10 shots to go on and pick up a 268-203 win.

"That last game was exactly the way I wanted to perform," said Ballard, who will face Wes Godwin, Sebring, Fla., in the round of 16. "I haven't had this kind of ball reaction in 10 years. I don't think I will see this condition the rest of the year, so I know if I stand any chance of qualifying next year, I have to do something now."

Ballard is currently 86th in the PBA World Point Rankings with 32,220 points and is 24,730 points behind Tom Baker for the 50th spot. The 12-time titlist would need be in the top 50 of the point rankings, or win a title, to make next year's all-exempt Tour.

Last week's 3rd place finisher in the ABC Masters, Mika Koivuniemi, came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Bryan Alpert, Northridge, Calif., 4-3. Alpert got the best of Koivuniemi, Finland, in the first game, 290-289, but Koivuniemi returned the favor in the last game by sparing, then striking in the 10th frame and won 212-189.

Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., threw his second 300 of the week in the sixth game en route to defeating Tim Pinner, Wichita, Kan., 4-2. Kent, who qualified second for match play, will face Paul Fleming, Bedford, Texas, in the round of 16.

Johnson Continues His Lead

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson, Garland, Texas, used a 4,227 18-game pinfall to continue his lead after the round of 64 Tuesday afternoon in the PBA Reno Open at the National Bowling Stadium.

Johnson, who led by 28 pins coming into the day, dropped to second place after Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., threw a 256 in the sixth game, giving Kent the lead by four pins. However, Johnson regained the lead after the next game, throwing a 233 compared to Kent's 225.

Johnson, who shot eight games of 240 or better through the first two rounds, finished off with two strong games (244 and 228), and marked the first time in his career he has led qualifying. Johnson's best previous finish after the round of 64 was 5th in the PBA Miller High Life Open in Vernon Hills, IL.

"I'm having the best ball reaction," Johnson, the leading candidate for PBA Rookie of the Year, said. "I drilled two balls earlier this week and both have worked perfectly. I have total confidence right now."

Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., finished the day 15th with a 3,929 and will be the top seed heading into match play as he has the highest point total of the remaining 32 bowlers over the past 20 PBA Tour events with 135,555 points. He'll take on No. 32 Anthony Thompson, Redding, Calif. who finished 25th with 3,895.

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson, Garland, Texas, shot a 2,173 nine-game pinfall to take a narrow lead over Arturo Quintero, Mexico, after the first round of qualifying Monday night in the PBA Reno Open at the National Bowling Stadium.

Johnson, who is the top candidate for PBA Rookie of the Year, began the day with games of 247, 236, 279 and 289 to take a commanding lead in the first of two squads.

"I was really ready to bowl this week and I had a great look all day," Johnson said. "I haven't bowled well when I've come to the National Bowling Stadium before, so to be on top is great."

Quintero shot a 2,145 and will begin the round of 64 just 28 pins shy of first place. Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., was 3rd after posting 2,140.

Kent, who has six career Tour titles to his credit, led the second squad and is just 33 pins short of Johnson's mark.

"I got off to a slow start but made a ball change toward the end of game two," said Kent, who rolled the only 300 of the day. "That was a very good move because I got lined up and started striking a lot."

Tim Penner, Wichita, Kan., finished 4th with 2,112 while Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., who made an appearance in the PBA Medford Open finals two weeks ago, rounded out the top 5 with a 2,109.

Johnson, who was the runner-up at the PBA Toledo Open, rolled a 2,173 nine-game qualifying score to take a 28-pin lead on Arturo Quintero, Mexico, 2,145. Thirty- time titlist Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., is third after posting 2,076.

"I was really ready to bowl this week and I had a great look all day," said Johnson, who averaged 241.44 to take the lead. "I haven't bowled well when I've come to the National Bowling Stadium before, so to be on top is great."

Williams Moves Closer To Anthony

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. defeated Chris Barnes in a pressure-packed championship match to win the 54th American Bowling Congress (ABC) Masters and the $100,000 top prize Sunday afternoon at the National Bowling Stadium.

Williams, Ocala, Fla., struck in his first six frames to open up a 34-pin lead on Barnes, Dallas. In the seventh frame, Barnes left the 4-6-7 split and only knocked down the 7-pin, giving Williams the edge with three frames to go.

Williams, who earned a two-year exemption on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, struck in the 7th and 9th frames to finish off Barnes and capture his sixth major, winning the title match 268-239. With his first Masters victory, Williams' 39th career PBA Tour title moved him within two of Earl Anthony's all-time record.

"It's a great feeling to finally win this tournament after 20 years," said Williams. "With over 500 bowlers in this tournament, I think this is probably the most difficult of all the tournaments to win."

In the first match of the day, Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, struck six times to open up a big lead on Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y. Allen managed to strike just once in the match, as Koivuniemi defeated him for the third time in the finals this year, winning 214-173.

Koivuniemi then defeated D.J. Archer, McKinney, Texas, 224-149 in the next match of the stepladder finals. Archer, 23, who was making his first career finals appearance, threw two 3-4-6-7-9-10 splits in the match, leaving the 4 and 7 pins on both shots, as Koivuniemi moved on to face Williams.

Williams opened up his first match by striking in five out of his first six frames against Koivuniemi. After Koivuniemi left the 2-4-5 and missed the 5-pin in the 6th frame, Williams struck in the 8th and 9th frames to defeat Koivuniemi, 237-213.

Barnes earned $50,000 for his runner-up finish and Koivuniemi, who won the 2000 ABC Masters, won $25,000 for third. Archer topped his career earnings from last year by winning $15,000 for fourth, while Allen took $10,000 for his fifth place finish.

Final Seeds Set

Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes, Dallas, went a perfect 6-0 in match play and will be the top seed in the finals of the American Bowling Congress (ABC) Masters at the National Bowling Stadium.

Barnes, whose best finish in the Masters was 5th in 2000 in Albuquerque, N.M, defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., 724-604, Saturday night. Barnes opened up a 42-pin lead over the six-time PBA Player of the Year after winning the first game 245-203. Barnes then cruised to a 234-214 victory in the next game, and closed Williams out after a 245-190 in the final game.

"I got into a great rhythm today and rode it all the way to the top," said Barnes, who has won five PBA Tour titles. "It was very important to win because I only have to bowl in the championship match, win one game and I've got the title, it's that simple."

Williams will be the 2nd seed in the stepladder finals after defeating D.J. Archer, McKinney, Texas, 645-584. Williams finished second in last year's Masters to Bryon Smith, Roseburg, Ore., who defeated Williams 236-220 in the championship match.

Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, who won the 2000 ABC Masters, beat fellow countryman Sami Konsteri, 673-599, to garner the 5th seed. Koivuniemi, the only finalist to have previously won the Masters, will face Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., in the first match. The winner of that match will then face Archer, who will be making his first ever finals appearance, in the next match of the stepladder finals.

Former ABC Masters Champ Koivuniemi on Fire

Mika Koivuniemi

Mika Koivuniemi, Finland, who won the 2000 ABC Masters in Albuquerque, N.M., looks to be back in his old form as he averaged 261.00 in his win over Duane Mellinger.

Koivuniemi qualified 60th for match play, nearly missing the cut. However, Koivuniemi always appears poised when he bowls in majors, as witnessed by his 783-608 three-game series win over Mellinger.

Koivuniemi is the only foreign-born winner of any PBA major event. Aside from capturing the 2000 Masters, Koivuniemi also won the 2001 U.S. Open.

No. 1 seed Nick Vogelgesang lost a tight match to Brian Hatcher, 595-569. Former U.S. Amateur champion and Team USA member Bill Hoffman disposed of 3rd seed Tommy Delutz Jr., 624-579.

Last week's champion Pete Weber went up early on Jason Hurd, only to have Hurd come back in the match and defeat Weber, 637-618.

  【PBA】 ABC Masters 【Round 3】

Smith Begins Title Defense

Bryon Smith

Bryon Smith, Roseburg, Ore., will begin his title defense in the American Bowling Congress (ABC) Masters Friday at 4 p.m. PT with the round of 64, double-elimination match play at the National Bowling Stadium.

Smith, 30, earned a bye with his win in last year's Masters and will join the top 63 qualifiers remaining from the original 590-man field. Smith will open up against PBA Tour member John May, Iron Station, N.C.

However, defending his title might not be easy as only two bowlers have successfully defended their title. Dick Hoover, Akron, Ohio, was the first to do so in 1956-57 and Billy Welu, St. Louis, did it again seven years later from 1964-65.

Other matches will feature Tommy Delutz Jr., third in qualifying, taking on Team USA member and former U.S. Amateur champion Bill Hoffman, Columbus, Ohio. Delutz, Flushing, N.Y., averaged 220.53 in his 15 qualifying games.

"I've bowled pretty well here in the past," said Delutz, who was the runner-up in last week's PBA Medford Open. "If you make the top 64, you're bowling well enough to go far."

Nick Vogelgesang, Cincinnati, lead qualifying with a 3,376 15-game pinfall. A three-year member of the PBA Tour, Vogelgesang will face Brian Hatcher, Roseville, Mich.

Michael Fagan, Greenlawn, N.Y., defeated Chuck Tompkins, Columbus, Ohio, 218-212, in a one-game roll off to determine the final spot in match play. Fagan will take on PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, in the first round.

Eric Forkel, Las Vegas, barely missed the cut by four pins while 11-time time PBA Tour title winner Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., missed match play by eight pins.

Notes: Fourteen amateur bowlers advanced to the round of 64 match play...Long-time women's professional bowler Kim Terrell qualified in 52nd...Tompkins had a chance to beat Fagan in their one-game roll-off by doubling in the 10th frame...after striking to start the frame, Tompkins left a 7-pin on his next shot.

"I've never had a 300 in the ABC Masters," Vogelgesang, who left the 4 and 9 pins on his 12th ball of his 298 game, said. "It was the first time I've gotten nervous trying to shoot a 300 since I was in junior leagues...I felt like a little kid again."

"I was working last week trying to keep my shoulder down because I've been missing a lot left," Gaither said. "Finding the right ball was key today because I could only bring a limited number out, and I grabbed the right one."

Osku Palermaa, Finland, remains second after posting 1,141 earlier in the day. This is just Palermaa's second tournament in the United States after finishing last year's U.S. Open in 235th place.

In one of the highest scoring finals in recent history, Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo. defeated Tommy Delutz Jr., Flushing, NY, 265-256, in the PBA Medford Open Sunday at Lava Lanes.

After both were perfect through eight frames, Delutz failed to convert a 4-9 split in the 9th frame, leaving the 9 pin. Weber failed to mark in the 9th frame as well, leaving the 6 pin in a 4-6-7 split, and giving Delutz a 236-235 lead going into the 10th frame.

Weber struck three times in the final frame, forcing Delutz to also throw three strikes. However, Delutz left the 10 pin standing after his second shot in the 10th, giving Weber his 30th career title, a $40,000 first-place prize and a one-year Tour exemption.

"I knew I had to throw three strikes in the 10th to put the pressure back on him and I threw three great shots," Weber said. "He threw two good shots but left that 10 pin standing. I couldn't believe it because I thought it was a strike when he let it go. I'm a very lucky man."

Weber advanced to the final, via a 197-195 semifinal win over Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan. In a replay of last week's championship game in the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm, Waliczek again had a chance for the win by marking in the 10th frame, but left the 1-2-4-10. He left the 10 pin standing, and walked away with $10,000 for his third place finish.

In another high scoring match, Delutz defeated Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., 279-211, in the first semifinal. Delutz took control of the match from the start, throwing nine straight strikes to earn a $10,000 bonus from Cambridge Credit Counseling. Angelo, who threw four consecutive strikes to begin the match, had two straight spares in the 5th and 6th frames, opening the door for Delutz to take the lead.

In the wildcard match, Waliczek defeated Ryan Shafer, Elmira, NY, 248-216. Waliczek used a strong start, striking in his first six frames, to take the wildcard match for the second straight week.

Notes
Tommy Delutz Jr. was awarded an extra $10,000 from Cambridge Credit Counseling for striking in the first nine frames in the first semifinal.
Pete Weber picked up his 30th career title, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time PBA Tour Champions list. Heading into today's match, Weber was tied with Parker Bohn III with 29 titles.

Angelo Advances To Finals For Second Time This Season

Brad Angelo

Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y, defeated Chris Barnes, Dallas, four games-to-one in the round of 8 to advance to the finals for the second time in his three-year career Saturday in the PBA Medford Open at Lava Lanes.

Up by three games in the match, Angelo, the defending PBA Rookie of the Year, struck in the first eight frames and 11 times overall in game five to win, 279-258. After splitting the first two games, Angelo took a commanding lead with a 238-228 win in game three and a 257-188 victory in game four, setting him up for the 4-1 win following game five.

"I was telling myself to just go out there, do my job and take it one shot at a time," Angelo, who has appeared in 32 PBA tournaments, said. "Tomorrow, I'll collect my thoughts after practice and get my emotions in check."

Hall of Famer Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., defeated Doug Kent, Newark, N.J., 4-3. After being down 0-2, Weber, who has 29 career Tour titles, tied the match at three games a piece with a 245-229 win in game six and sealed the win with a 235-214 in game seven.

Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., swept Tommy Jones, Greenville, S.C., 4-0 en route to advancing to his second consecutive finals appearance. Waliczek lost to Walter Ray Williams Jr. by six pins in the final match of the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm last week.

Tommy Delutz Jr., Flushing, N.Y., defeated Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., 4-3 to advance to the finals for the second time this season. In game seven, Delutz struck nine times, including striking out in the 10th frame, to pick up the 249-225 win.

Shafer, the top qualifier among the four bowlers who lost in the round of 8, will be the wildcard in Sunday's final round. He will face Waliczek in the wildcard match.

Jones Outduels Ward In Seven

Tommy Jones

After shooting 300 and going up three-games-to-none in his round of 16 match with Ricky Ward, Tommy Jones, Greenville, S.C., thought he had a win in the bag Saturday afternoon in the PBA Medford Open at Lava Lanes.

Ward, North Fort Myers, Fla., had just come up short in an epic battle with Jones, leaving a 7-pin in the 10th frame, giving Jones a 300-289 win. Had Ward shot 300, it would have been only the fifth time in PBA history that two competitors shot 300 against each other. The last time came in 1995, when Doug Wallace and Norm Duke accomplished the feat in Kennewick, Wash.

The momentum then took a swing in Ward's direction as he reeled off three consecutive games to even the match at 3-3. Ward threw games of 234, 245, and 223, while Jones' high game over that span was a 212 in game five.

In the seventh game, Jones struck in eight of the first nine frames to take a commanding lead. Ward tried to come back, but it was too late as Jones advanced with a 245-215 win.

"After I threw 166 in the sixth game, I went back to the locker room and grabbed a different ball," said Jones, who will take on Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., in the round of 8. "It was a guess on which ball to use, but I picked the right one because my reaction was great, and I came out with the win."

Chris Barnes, Dallas, will face on Brad Angelo in the round of 8 after he toppled Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., 4-1. Couch notched the match at one after a 231-213 win, but Barnes averaged 258 over his next three games to finish off Couch, and raise his tournament match play record to 8-1.

Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., outlasted a hard-charging Brian Voss, Atlanta, 4-3. In the first game, Voss threw his third 299 game of the tournament, leaving another solid 10-pin, but he took the match 299-256.

After Angelo went up 3-2, Voss tied the match up at three with a 235-210 win. The seventh game came right down to the final frame, but after Angelo struck out, Voss needed to strike out for a one pin win, but he threw a split and handed the game and the match to Angelo in a reversal of the previous game, 235-210.

Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., beat Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., 4-3 and solidified his spot in the finals Sunday. Shafer, who won the PBA Empire State Open earlier this season, is qualified second after Friday's round of 64.

Barnes Unstoppable in Round of 32

Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes, Dallas, struck 40 times in his four-games-to-none win over top qualifier Wes Malott in the PBA Medford Open round of 32 match play Friday night at Lava Lanes.

The 1998 PBA Tour Rookie of the Year, Barnes struck in his first nine frames on the night to take the first game, 266-225. Malott, Austin, Texas, couldnユt capitalize on two Barnes open frames in the second game, dropping the contest 224-217.

The third game came down to the wire with Barnes forced to double in the 10th frame for a 279-270 win. Facing another 279-effort from Barnes in the final game, Malott had a chance to tie by striking out in the 10th frame, but left the 7-pin and lost, 279-258.

"You have to bowl your best to beat the top qualifier," Barnes said. "It's tough because (Malott's) a good friend and a great guy. I wish I was bowling someone else."

Barnes' victory sets up a round of 16 match against Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., who swept D.J. Archer, Amarillo, Texas.

In other matches, Mike Machuga, Erie, Pa., lost a 3-0 lead only to beat Tom Baker, Buffalo, N.Y., in the seventh game, 248-205, to win 4-3. Last season's PBA Rookie of the Year, Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., topped Tom Daugherty, Tampa, Fla., 4-3.

Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela, averaged 244.80 in his 4-1 win over Jeff Lizzi, Sandusky, Ohio. Monacelli will face Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., in the round of 16 after Kent defeated Dave Arnold, Reno, Nev., 4-2.

Notes: Barnes noted that Malott won his first career regional tournament when the two met in the finals of a southwest regional tournament in Lawton, Okla. In March, 2002ノBarnes had won the first game of that best-of-three match before Malott took the next two gamesノThe top two teams in the PBA Team Championship standings both have two bowlers in the round of 16ノMiller Lite, leading the standings with 229,775 points, have Tommy Delutz Jr. and Machuga in the round of 16 while second-place Cambridge Credit Counseling (194,240) has Kent and Lonnie Waliczek still alive.

Malott Leads After Early Qualifying

Wes Malott

Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, used a 4,200 18-game pinfall to continue his lead after the round of 64 Friday afternoon in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Medford Open at Lava Lanes.

Malott, who led after last night's early qualifying, shot six games of 230 or better today, including a 265 in his first game of the day.

"The lane conditions were close to what they were yesterday," Malott said. "I had to stay slow and obviously throw very hard. Tonight I will just have to again stay slow and focused and I think I'll be alright."

Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., finished in a tie for sixth place with 4,047 and will be the top seed heading into match play, as he has the highest point total of the remaining 32 bowlers over the past 20 PBA Tour events with 250,315 points. This marks the first time since the PBA Geico Open in December that Weber will be the No. 1 seed heading into match play. He'll take on No. 32 Christopher Collins, Fayetteville, N.C., who finished 21st with 3,895.

Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., was 2nd after qualifying with 4,172 and is seeded sixth in match play while Brian Voss, Atlanta, was 3rd with 4,170 and is seeded 15th.

Rudy Kasimakis, Tupelo, Miss., made his first match play of the season finishing in 27th place with 3,880. Kasimakis' best finish of the year prior to this week's tournament was 33rd at the PBA Miller High Life Open.

"I tried to play the lanes smarter today," Kasimakis said. "I almost got caught playing too deep but I figured things out and was able to qualify."

Notes: Jeff Lizzi was 32nd after qualifying with 3,862...both Ritchie Allen (3,860) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (3,858) barely missed the cut.

Malott Leads After Early Qualifying

Wes Malott

Wes Malott, Austin, Texas, shot a 2,138 nine-game pinfall to take a narrow lead over Jason Couch, Clermont, Fla., after the first round of qualifying Thursday night in the PBA Medford Open at Lava Lanes.

Malott, who is looking for his first career PBA Tour title, began the day with games of 249, 279, 206 and finished strong with 246 and 221 in games eight and nine, respectively. A right-hander who is in his second year on Tour, Malott shot six games above 240 and finished the day with a single-game high of 279.

"This makes me feel a lot more comfortable to lead the squad and compete with these guys out here," Malott said. "Hopefully tomorrow I can carry it on and relax. We'll see what happens but I'm in a good position to move on to the round of 32."

Couch, who recorded a 289 in game nine which vaulted him into second, finished the day with a 2,107 and will begin tomorrow just 31 pins shy of first place.

Hall of Famer Brian Voss, Atlanta, finished 3rd with 2,103 while Chris Barnes, a six-year veteran looking for his fifth PBA Tour title, is 4th with 2,086. Ryan Shafer, Elmira, NY, rounded out the top 5 with a 2,078.

Notes:Jimmy Johnson withdrew with a sore lower back...Rudy Kasimakis, Tupelo, Miss., had a small fan club following him throughout the night...the fans, who cheered him on from lane to lane while wearing t-shirts that said "Rudy's squad" on their backs, bowled with him in the pro-am earlier this week.

Voss Looks to Find Top Form

Brian Voss

Looking to turn his season around, Brian Voss began the task after taking the lead with a 2,103 nine-game pinfall in early first round qualifying Thursday afternoon in the PBA Medford Open at Lava Lanes.

Voss, a PBA Hall of Famer with 22 career Tour titles, entered the week 73rd in the PBA World Point Rankings after finishing last season 9th in the point rankings.

"I just bowled well today," Voss said. "There is nothing wrong with my physical game but I just need to stabilize some things and do a lot of soul searching. I want to be the leader because there is a big advantage to being the leader."

Voss, Atlanta, shot 259 in his opening game. After scores of 247 and 235, Voss rolled a 299 in game seven then closed out the day with a 228 and 210.

Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., is second with 2,078 while David Ozio, Beaumont, Texas, is third with 2,043. Local favorite, Blaise Bedolla, Roseburg, Ore., is tied for 19th with 1,932.

【PBA】 PBA Earl Anthony Classic 【Final】

Williams Storms Seattle

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Needing to strike three times in the 10th frame to stay alive in the match, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., threw a turkey en route to defeating Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., 211-205, to win the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm Sunday in Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center.

After Williams, a six-time PBA Player of the Year, finished his game with a 211, Waliczek needed to mark to take the championship but shot a 1-2-4-6-10 washout and left the 6 and 10 pins, giving Williams his 38th career title. His 38 titles is second only to the legend Earl Anthony (41 titles), for who this tournament was named after.

"I knew I needed to strike out to force Lonnie to mark," Williams said. "Marking isn't the easiest thing to do and it was devastating for him to do what he did. I know the feeling. I don't think anyone wants to win that way. You would rather need to strike three times to win by one pin."

"The right lane was tighter the whole day," Waliczek said. "I thought it was an okay shot, but your adrenaline gets up and I let it go too fast. In that situation the only thing you should be thinking about is making your best shot."

In the first semi-final, Williams struck in all but the 4th frame to take a 279-243 win over Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas. Waliczek advanced to the finals by defeating Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill. in the second semi-finals, 257-198.

In the wild card match, Waliczek defeated Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., 222-202. Down after six frames, Duke left a 4-6-7 split which put the game in Waliczek's favor.

Waliczek Defeats Weber En Route To Finals Appearance

Lonnie Waliczek

With a trip to the finals of the PBA Earl Anthony Classis presented by Storm on the line, Lonnie Waliczek, Wichita, Kan., defeated Hall of Famer Pete Weber, St. Ann. Mo., four-games-to-one in the round of 8 Saturday at Pacific Lanes.

Waliczek, who is searching for his first Tour title this season and the third of his career, fell behind early losing the first game, 224-207, but came back and dominated the second, 224-148. With momentum behind him, Waliczek took the final three games (195-170, 217-195, 247-178) to advance to the finals for the first time since the PBA Pepsi Open earlier this season.

"The key today was to be soft with the speed, soft with my hands and try to get the ball to break a little earlier," Waliczek said. "I feel pretty good about the win. Pete (Weber) has a pretty good resume. My theme tomorrow will be to walk in there with an open mind and go from there."

Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, defeated Michael Haugen Jr., Victorville, Calif., 4-2. Scroggins, who hasn't won a title since the 1991 ARC Sacramento Open but has made three championship appearances this season, threw seven consecutive strikes to take game five and break a two game tie.

Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take four of the final five games and the match over rookie Nathan Bohr, Wichita, Kan., 4-3.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., swept Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla, 4-0 to advance to the finals for the first time this season. Williams, a six-time PBA Player of the Year, dropped just three games in match play this week.

Duke, the top qualifier among the four bowlers who lost in the round of 8, will be the wildcard in Sunday's final round. He will face Waliczek in the wildcard match.

Williams Jr. Assured Best Finish of Season

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., is advancing to the round of 8 for the first time this season after defeating Tony Reyes, four-games-to-one Saturday morning in the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm at Pacific Lanes.

Williams, the six-time PBA Player of the Year, won the first two games with scores of 217 and 210 before Reyes, San Jose, Calif., took the third game 278-245. Williams narrowly won the fourth game, 227-223 then captured the final game, 237-203.

Williams will face Norm Duke, Clermont, Fla., who topped Rick Steelsmith, 4-1. Duke, a 21-time PBA Tour winner, dropped the first game to Steelsmith, Wichita, Kan., before averaging 224.25 to take the next four games.

"Last year Norm bowled a 300 against me on national television in this tournament," Williams said. "He can play any part of the lane I can play, so it should be an interesting match."

Prior to this week, Williams' best finish in a non-major event this season was 15th place in both the PBA Banquet Open and PBA Empire State Open.

In other round of 16 action, Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., beat Riga Kalfas, Florence, Ky., 4-2. Jaros, the top qualifier for the week, is assured of making the televised finals tomorrow.

Defending champion Mike DeVaney, Esconidido, Calif., fell to Tour rookie, Nathan Bohr, Wichita, Kan., 4-1. This marks the first time in three seasons DeVaney has failed to reach the final round of this event.

Notes:Over the break, Williams said he worked with Mark Baker, a Track representative, former Tour pro and a friend of Williams..."He's seen me bowl for 20 years, and he saw something I was not doing right," Williams said...Mike Scroggins came back from an 0-2 deficit to beat Tour rookie Ronnie Russell, 4-2, and advance to the round of 8.

Bohr Bounces Into Round of 16

Nathan Bohr

Nathan Bohr, Wichita, Kan., knew of Tommy Delutz' ability to come back in match play. That didn't faze Bohr, as he beat Delutz four-games-to-three in the round of 32 Friday night in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm at Pacific Lanes.

Bohr, 23, took the first three games with scores of 251, 279 and 209 before averaging 183.67 in his next three games to allow Delutz, Flushing, N.Y., to even the match at 3-3.

"I was able to relax in the final game and bowl somewhat normal again instead of trying to force everything," said Bohr.

The Tour rookie held a two-pin lead over Delutz before striking in four of his final five rolls. Delutz, who came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat Jim Tomek Jr. earlier this season in the PBA Geico Open round of 16, spared in the 9th frame as Bohr took the game, 246-224.

In other matches, Curtis Woods Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., swept Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y. Woods, a full-time member on Tour from 1999-2003, is appearing in his first event this season.

Mike DeVaney, the defending champion, defeated Doug Kent, Newark, N.Y., 4-2. DeVaney, Escondido, Calif., held off Kent in the sixth game, 248-240.

Notes: Bohr switched to a Storm "X-Factor" ball in the middle of the sixth game against Delutz...Tour rookie Ronnie Russell bounced back from a 3-1 deficit to beat 2003 PBA Tour Rookie of the Year Brad Angelo, 4-3...Archer averaged just 154.0 in his loss to Steelsmith after games of 128, 118, 201 and 169...Archer had finished qualifying in third place with a 227.44 average.

Jaros Leads After Round of 64

Steve Jaros

Steve Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., used a 4,208 18-game pinfall to take the lead after the round of 64 Friday afternoon in the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm at Pacific Lanes.

Jaros, who finished second after the first round, shot three games of 250 or better today, including a 269 in his final game, to take the lead after qualifying.

"Going into today I had the same strategy as yesterday, keeping the ball in play to begin with, and for the most part, to play as straight as I could," Jaros, who is searching for his fifth PBA title and second of the season, said. "In match play tonight, I need to keep making shots and keep the pace going."

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., finished 19th with 4,091 despite starting the day in a tie for 40th place. Williams will be the top seed heading into match play as he has the highest point total of the remaining 32 bowlers over the past 20 PBA Tour events with 257,265. Shafer Leads After Round 1

Ryan Shafer

Ryan Shafer, Elmira, N.Y., was missing his luggage, but not his game, as he rolled a 2,075 nine-game pinfall Thursday evening to take the lead after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Earl Anthony Classic presented by Storm at Pacific Lanes.

"I think the key today was throwing the ball slow and keeping the speed down," Shafer said. "Hopefully, the lanes will be similar tomorrow and I'll continue to make sure I keep my foot speed and ball speed down."

Shafer, who rolled a 257 in his final game of the night to erase a 41-pin deficit and surpass Steve Jaros, flew into Seattle Monday, but his luggage was left in Denver. His belongings went to Portland, but have been stuck there since the Pacific Northwest was hit with a snow storm early Tuesday morning.

Jaros, Bolingbrook, Ill., rolled a 2,061 to finish second. "I came in with the mindset of keeping the ball in play," said Jaros, who won this season's PBA Toledo Open. "My strategy was to keep it straight, and it matched up really well."
