【PWBA】 PWBA Greater Syracuse Classic 【Final】 BARRETTE STRIKES AGAIN
Leanne Barrette Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. became the first multiple title winner of the 2002 Professional Women's Bowling Association season after she defeated Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla. 248-245 in the finals of the Greater Syracuse Classic at Flamingo Bowl. A winner last week at the Empire State PWBA Classic, Barretteユs 25 career titles ties her with Patty Costello for third all-time in the PWBA annals. "Kendra bowled great today. I was very fortunate to get an early lead," said Barrette. "She struggled in the first few frames but once she got lined up I just did everything I could to stay with her because she was striking at will." Although both players completed 10 frames in the title match the heat of battle didn't really ensue until after the third frame. Following five consecutive marks combined Gaines left the third frame open after she failed to pick up a 3-9-10 split. Barrette, who entered the championships as the event's No. 1 seed, responded to Gaines third frame misfire with six consecutive strikes. "I was getting great ball reaction," she said. "If there is one thing I've learned over my career is you have to let things happen as oppose to always trying to make them happen. Kendra really picked things up after the third which put the pressure on me the whole match." Appearing in her fifth PWBA finals of the 2002 campaign, Gaines did not go quietly after the open third. The fifth-year pro matched Barrette strike for strike heading into the tenth frame. Gaines continued the torrid pace in the tenth by striking on her first ball before sparing to close out her game.ハ Barrette entered the 10th needing a mark and eight pins to win the title. "I just wanted to get the ball off my hand and have a chance in the tenth," Barrette stated. "Kendra pushed me the whole match and in a way it helped me focus on what I had to do to win in the last frame." Gaines entered the finals as the tournament's No. 5 seed. The Floridian nearly missed a chance to bowl in the semi-finals but a clutch strike in the tenth frame of the opening shootout gave her a 246-245-174 victory over Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, NY and Cara Honeychurch, Melbourne, Australia. In the semi-final match Gaines dispatched reigning Player of the Year Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills 209-159. "I feel great about the way I bowled," said Gaines. "I beat some of the best players on our tour tonight. Leanne was three pins better than me in the finals.ハ She deserved to win." For her second place finish Gaines cashed for $5,500. Dorin-Ballard earned $3,800 and Feldman and Honeychurch claimed $3,000 and $2,500 respectively. |

Leanne Barrette Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. finished the 42-game prelims of the Greater Syracuse Classic as the tournaments top seed heading into Sunday's live ESPN stepladder finals at 4:30 p.m. (eastern). "The group I'm bowling with are all among the top bowlers on tour so it will not be an easy final no matter who I face." Claiming the top seed is nothing new for the 24-time titlest. Last week Barrette won the Empire State PWBA Classic after earning the No. 1 position for the TV finals. Over the course of her career Barrette has appeared in the televised finals 92 times and has been the top seed 14 times. Dorin-Ballard, who is the reigning Player of the Year, finished as the second seed after going 16-8-0 with a 222.09 clip and a 9,808 pinfall. Dorin-Ballard is seeking her first title of the 2002 campaign. The 2002 ESPY nominee for "Best Bowler" tied a pro women's bowling record last season with seven championships. A native of Skaneateles, NY, Feldman moved into the third slot after closing her night out with her second perfect game of the week. The 10-year pro leapfrogged Honeychurch in the last match of the sixth round with a 300-219 victory. For Feldman it was her 18th perfect game of her career and third in the 2002 PWBA season. Feldman led the tournament in match play records with 17-6-1 tally. Her tournament totals included 218.33 and 9,695. 【PWBA】 PWBA Greater Syracuse Classic 【Round 5】 BARRETTE MAINTAINS TOP SPOT AT GREATER SYRACUSE CLASSIC
Leanne Barrette Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. has been in this position before. The five-time Women's International Bowling Congress All-American is the tournament leader at the Greater Syracuse Classic at Flamingo Bowl by 85-pins over Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas. Barrette has tallied an 11-5-0 record (Ed. note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds), has a 222.52 tournament average and has amassed a 7,896 pinfall. "As good as my carry was last night, it was equally as bad this morning," said Barrette. "I had a few bad breaks today but fortunately I maintained the lead going into tonight's round." Including today's round the 24-time titlest has been on top of the leaderboard after a qualifying or a match play round nine times this season. Last week Barrette secured the No. 1 seed entering the TV finals and went on to win the Empire State PWBA Classic. "If you look at how many times the No. 1 seed has won a tournament this year it's definitely something to aim for I can't worry about that tonight because there are several bowlers in the top 10 right now that can get hot and knock me down a few pegs." Dorin-Ballard, who last night entering round four was the tournament leader, came into the morning session in fourth place. The reigning Player of the Year moved up two spaces with the help of a 7-1 fifth round record. After 34 games the 2002 ESPY nominee for "Best Bowler" has chalked up a 9-7 mark with totals of 221.79 and 7,811. Trailing Dorin-Ballard by 58 pins is Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla. A televised finals regular appearing in four of the last five PWBA telecasts, Gaines has registered a 9-7 record with 220.05 and 7,752. Gianotti-Block had been making a remarkable comeback moving from 23rd to 11th last night and climbing as high as sixth today. Alternate Tiffany Stanbrough Stanbrough, Oklahoma City, Okla. replaced Gianotti-Block after having the difference between their qualifying scores plus any bonus pins won by Gianotti-Block subtracted from her tournament total. |

高林 英子 【PWBA】 Empire State Classic 【Final】 BARRETTE WINS NAIL BITER AT EMPIRE STATE PWBA CLASSIC
Leanne Barrette It was only fitting that a mighty thunderstorm was booming outside of Bowlers Club in Latham. N.Y. during the live, televised finals, because inside Leanne Barrette was certainly creating some boomers of her own. It came down to the final frame, but Leanne "Boomer" Barrette, as her tour mates have nicknamed her, delivered a rumbling clutch strike to capture by one pin, the 2002 Professional Women's Bowling Association's Empire State Classic, Sunday afternoon, over Wendy Macpherson, 237-236. "I had a great shot on the TV pair," said Barrette of Pleasanton, Calif., a two-time Player of the Year, "But Wendy is such a great player you have to keep striking against her." On a weekend when ESPN was saluting women athletes, the live championship match was an outstanding display of women athletes performing under pressure. Both savvy veterans began the match with a strike and spare, but Macpherson took off on a tear of four straight strikes while Barrette shot a few spares and it looked like Macpherson, of Henderson, Nev. was on her way to yet another title. But Barrette, a 17-year tour veteran, started pounding the pocket in the sixth frame to begin her own string of strikes and slowly worked her way closer to Macpherson. In the seventh frame, the crowd at Bowlers Club was stunned when Macpherson's ball slammed into the pocket and left a stone eight-pin standing, ending her string at a four-bagger. Barrette kept up the steady stream of clutch strikes right up to the tenth frame. Macpherson took the stage first and once again, a loud groan came from the audience as her solid pocket shot resulted in leaving a ten pin for her first ball in the tenth. She spared and finished a gorgeous-looking game with an eight for a 236. All she could do was watch and wait as Barrette stepped up for her tenth frame. Barrette spent a few extra seconds exhaling and digging her feet into the approach, and all the silent gallery could hear were the rumblings of thunder outside. Barrete's wide-hooking ball found its way perfectly into the pocket for a crashing strike and the audience erupted. Barrette's second shot left a nine count and after she made the spare to seal her one-pin victory, and her 24th title, the fans let out a thunderous cheer of their own. In the first match, a three-player shootout, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., and Kim Terrell, Antioch, Calif., both started with the first four solid strikes, while Macpherson seemed to be hunting for a shot. Feldman looked to be unstoppable as she extended her string to six. In the 7th frame disaster hit Feldman when her shot went high and she left a 3-6-10 and failed to convert the ten. Meanwhile, Macpherson quietly found her way and began her own run of strikes in the 7th frame. Feldman continued to have the upper hand until the 10th frame when she left a 2-4-8-10 split, opening in the final frame to finish with a 219. Macpherson stepped up in the 10th still needing a strike and finished her final six frames with all strikes to overtake both her opponents and the chance to face Nable. "Well, no one ever likes to finish second," said a drained Macpherson, who put together a 712 set for her three games, "Am I happy I got through the first match? Absolutely. Am I surprised? Absolutely." Maxine Nable, Australia, making just her third television PWBA appearance, started the match with three perfect strikes and looking like a relaxed veteran rather than a young up and comer. She pounded the pocket but came up a little short as Macpherson strung four in a row mid-game to eliminate Nable, 241-216.

【PWBA】 Empire State Classic 【Round 6】 BARRETTE IS THE TOP SEED FOR FINALS AT EMPIRE STATE PWBA CLASSIC
Leanne Barrette Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., held on to her lead to claim the top seed for the televised finals in the Empire State PWBA Classic at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. Saturday night. Barrette continued her march to the top by compiling a 19-5 won-lost record and averaging 233.33 overall. Barrette is fourth on the PWBA all-time career earnings list with $947,993 just $52,007 shy of the million dollar mark. After the first round, Barrette was situated in 12th place, moving up to 4th by round two, and 2nd place at the cut to the top twenty-four match play finalists. During match play, she maintained her hold on second for the fourth round and made her move to the top after the fifth round. Barrette will be looking for her first title of the year. "I'd much rather be first or second for the show," said Barrette, "Sometimes those shootout matches can be pretty tough to get out of." The other four athletes looking to take the title from the top seed are 2nd seed Maxine Nable, Australia, 3rd seed Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., 4th seed Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. and 5th Kim Terrell, Antioch, Calif. 【PWBA】 Empire State Classic 【Round 5】 BOOMING SCORES HELP BARRETTE OVERTAKE THE LEAD
Leanne Barrette The high scores throughout the field were plentiful, but Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., threw some mighty games herself Saturday morning enabling her to move into the lead at the Empire State PWBA Classic at Bowlers Club in Latham N.Y. The two-time Robby Sportsmanship Award winner holds a 31-pin lead over Maxine Nable of Australia going into the final round of match play Saturday evening. "The conditions this morning were more of a wet-dry," said Barrette, "I made some adjustments to play the lanes more direct and it really paid off." Barrette, the wide hooking right-hander nicknamed "Boomer", put together five games over 245 this morning and at one point compiled a 278, 263 and 267 for an 808 three-game set. She has so far has put together a 12-4 won-lost record and is averaging 235.08 for the tournament. Nable, the leader the previous two rounds, slipped to second place, with a 11-5 won-lost record and a 235.05 average, in spite of tossing some big numbers herself, including a 289. The other bowlers in the top five working to make the last cut into tomorrow's TV finals are Wendy Macpherson, Henderson,Nev., in third, also with a 11-5 record; Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. holding down fourth place and a 9-6-1 record; and Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. in fifth place with a 11-5 record. High scores were being shot throughout the morning squad with Tennelle Grijalva, Yorba Linda, Calif leading the onslaught with her second 300 game of the event. Also flirting with perfection were Macpherson and Feldman, both shooting 299. The lone Albany area bowler, Linda Follett, had to withdraw from the event moments before the start of today's action due to a hand problem. Follett, part of outstanding group of local bowlers who competed this week, attempted to throw a few shots and made the decision to withdraw. "I'm very disappointed," said Follett, showing her torn and blistered hand, "All I wanted to do was finish strong, but I just couldn't get a good release. I thought it would be better to give the alternate (Chele Schirmer, Bel Air, MD) a chance to bowl." According to PWBA rules, if a player withdraws, the athlete finishing the tournament in 25th position takes her place with a loss of the withdrawing players' bonus pins as a penalty. |

Nable won six of her eight head to head matches, averaging a 233.38 for the tournament and holds a 86-pin lead over second place Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. "I'm pretty happy with the way I'm bowling right now," said a smiling Nable, "Being the leader is a place I've not been in lately, so I'm not thinking about anything except winning matches." Nable didn't pop for any large scores during the evening, but managed to bowl enough to win the majority of her matches with a high game of 248 and a low of 193. 16-year tour veteran Barrette won five of her matches this evening with a high game of 279 to hold on to the second spot and 92 pins ahead of third place Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev. She put together a 2-6 win-loss record for this evening and is currently in 24th place. 【PWBA】 Empire State Classic 【Round 3】 NABLE FINDS ROOM TO BECOME NEW LEADER AT EMPIRE STATE CLASSIC
Maxine Nable All she was waiting for was a little room to the right. Maxine Nable, a dynamic right-hander from Australia, powered her way into the lead at Bowlers Club in Latham, N.Y. going into match play at the Empire State PWBA Classic Friday morning. "The right side of the lane had room for me to swing the ball", said Nable, who is averaging 235.27 for the event, "On tour we don't get to see that very much, but it's a type of condition that I do well on." 【PWBA】 PWBA Greater Harrisburg Open 【Final】 HONEYCHURCH WINS GREATER HARRISBURG OPEN
Cara Honeychurch It was a long time coming for Australian Cara Honeychurch. Appearing in her fourth televised final of the 2002 Professional Women's Bowling Association season, Honeychurch won the Greater Harrisburg Open on Sunday after a 195-148 victory over Kim Terrell, Antioch, Calif. Honeychurch took home a first place check worth $10,500. "The first title of the year is the toughest to win," said Honeychurch. "I'm very relieved right now because I knew I had put myself in a good position to win and I did not want to give up that opportunity." Honeychurch entered the championships as the tournament's top seed. The left-hander finished the 42-game prelims with a 15-8-1 record, a 229.26 average and a 10,094 pinfall. Although her tournament week was filled with good fortune, Honeychurch got off a difficult start in her battle with Terrell. The eight-time titlest opened the match with a 7-10 split and then suffered a 4-6-7-10 split in the second frame. Terrell, who bowled exceptionally in the opening shootout and semi-finals, also left an open frame in the first when she missed a 10-pin. Both players would mark in frames three thru five but in the sixth Terrell suffered a 7-10 split while Honeychurch continued to mark. A missed four-pin in the seventh by Terrell helped the Aussie to a 22-pin lead. "I didn't really miss the pocket much in the finals but my angle of entry kept me from striking," said Terrell. "I thought I made a good shot when I missed the 10-pin. When I missed the four pin I was thinking too much about the 7-10 split." Terrell's march to the finals came as a result of a 255-248-155 win over Anne Marie Duggan, Oklahoma City, Okla. and Kendra Gaines in the opening shootout. The 2002 Women's International Bowling Congress Queens tournament winner put on an impressive show when she notched a 10-strike game including six straight to finish the match. Duggan was equally magnificent striking nine times. In the semi-finals Terrell bested her road roommate Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif 237-186. Barrette led the tournament in rounds three and four. The 23-time titlest was making her 90th televised appearance of her career. For her second place finish Terrell cashed for $5,800. Barrette earned $4,000 and Gaines and Duggan claimed $3,200 and $2,800 respectively. |
