【PBA】 PBA Johnny Petraglia Open 【Final】

Wiseman Red Hot
Beats Defending Champ and Jaros for JP Open Title

Danny Wiseman

Danny Wiseman won his ninth career PBA Tour title Tuesday night in the PBA Johnny Petraglia Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Wiseman, of Baltimore, defeated Steve Jaros, of Bolingbrook, Ill., in the championship match, 255-226, to earn the 11th Petraglia title and the $40,000 top prize.

Prior to this week's tournament, Wiseman took a week off from bowling in order to clear his mind.

"I was mentally fried," he said. "My swing plane and overall timing were way off. So my coach told me to cut down my approach to four steps. That brought everything together."

For Wiseman, who improved his record in title matches to 9-2, the key was not using the ball that he shot two 300 games with Monday night and propelled him into the finals.

"The only thing that ball gave me tonight was air," he joked about the Revolution IZE. "It wouldn't make the turn down lane."
So he used two different balls (one for each lane) and had the best pin carry of the five finalists.

Wiseman sruck nine times in the final match and picked up spares in the third and seventh frames for a clean game.

Jaros nearly marked in every frame, too. But left an unfortunate 6-7-10 split on his second shot in the 10th frame after a strike.
"If I would have struck there, that really would have put some pressure on Wiseman," said Jaros, who picked up $20,000. "But, I stuck at the line on that shot."

Wiseman, who only needed to mark in the 10th frame, stepped in and finished the game with two strikes and eight on his fill ball.
He defeated defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., in the semifinals, 210-184. Williams, a 33-time PBA champion, earned $10,000 in third place.

Also in third and earning $10,000 was David Traber, of Woodstock, Ill. Jaros defeated Traber in the semifinals, 195-172.
Brian Kretzer, of Dayton, Ohio, lost the wild card match to Traber, 237-175, and earned $9,000 in fifth.

DAVIDSON LEAPFROGS TO THE FRONT
AT $50,000 LAS CRUCES NEW MEXICO OPEN

Dede Davidson

Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, Nevada took control of the leader board after fourth round of the $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open. Davidson was a perfect 8-0 in match play (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) helping to increase her tournament total to a 5,929 pin fall and a 218.80 average.

"I was in a great rhythm tonight," said Davidson. "I like bowling on the 40-foot pattern because I don't have to force my shot. I'm getting great ball reaction without having to overcompensate. The last few I've had trouble with the shorter patterns, but this week it's all falling into place."

Seeking her first title of the 2001 season, Davidson holds a 234-pin lead over Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. who last week finished fourth in the Hammer Players Championship and is competing in her 216th consecutive tournament. Johnson's 26-game totals include a 5,695 and 212.11. She went 6-2 in the evening's matches.

Falling back to third place is Australia's Cara Honeychurch. Honeychurch was the tournament leader after three rounds and currently is 12-pins (5,683) behind Johnson. The Aussie went 5-3 in match play and is averaging 212.80.

Moving up to fourth place is Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N.Richland Hills, Texas with 5,577 and 207.57. The leader in the PWBA this season in titles (6), earning ($105,870)), competition points (15,035) and averages (214.80), Dorin-Ballard is attempting to qualify for her 17th televised final in 21 tournaments.

Rounding out the top five is the reigning Las Cruces New Mexico Open champion Kim Adler, who closed out the day with a 6-2 record, a 5,570 pin fall and a 207.30 average.

【PWBA】 Las Cruces New Mexico Open 【Round 3】

HONEYCHURCH CONTINUES HER CHARGE
AT $50,000 LAS CRUCES NEW MEXICO OPEN

Cara Honeychurch

Is Las Cruces the PWBA city for south paws? Only time will tell, but after 18 games lefty Cara Honeychurch, Australia leads the $50,000 Las Cruces New Mexico Open. The "thunder from down under" completed round three with a tournament total of 3,872 and a 215.11 average. Honeychurch holds an 80-pin lead over fellow Aussie Carol Gianotti-Block who has posted 3,792 and 210.66.

"It's nice to see several lefties at the top of the leader board," said Honeychurch. "We haven't really had this kind of impact on a tournament since the Lady Ebonite Classic in Kentucky. I'm not sure why the left-handers are scoring better because every bowling center is different. I'm playing the lanes much deeper than I normally do because we're playing a longer pattern this week."

Trailing behind Gianotti-Block are lefties Dede Davidson, Las Vegas Nevada and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. who are tied for third with 3,770 and 209.44. In fifth is Oklahoma City's Tiffany Stanbrough, who also is left-handed and has recorded 3,738 and 206.44.

Honeychurch has made 12 championship round appearances this season, second only to Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (16), N. Richland Hills, Texas. In 2001 she ranks second in titles (4), earnings ($82,665), competition points (13,560) and averages (212.64). Gianotti-Block, Davidson and Stanbrough all are seeking their first titles of 2001 while Johnson has one championship to her credit.

Reigning Las Cruces New Mexico Open champion Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., is just off the pace in 11th place with 3,642 and 202.33. Adler is tied with Albuquerque's Dana Miller-Mackie. Both are 96-pins from breaking into the top five.

  【PBA】 PBA Johnny Petraglia Open 【Round 5】

Williams Jr. Defends JP Open

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Brian Kretzer defeated Chris Barnes in the round of eight Monday night and earned his first career finals berth in the PBA Johnny Petraglia Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

In his fifth match play appearance, the rookie Kretzer, of Dayton, Ohio, knocked off the top-seed Chris Barnes, 3-2, (214-238, 197-189, 185-171, 201-239, 211-199). Barnes, playing a heavy roll up the 11-board most of the match, appeared to be cruising to victory midway through the decisive fifth game.

Leading by 69 pins going into the eighth frame, Barnes missed his target left and left the 3-4-6-7-10 split for an open frame. After a spare in the ninth frame, Barnes got a little fast with his first shot in the 10th and left the 2-8-10 split. He shot the spare left-handed and threw the ball in the gutter.

"We're all gamblers out here," said Kretzer, who went 9-4 in match play. "He (Barnes) took a gamble shooting that spare left-handed. But, at that point, pin count didn't matter. He needed the spare."

Kretzer, playing deep inside the fifth arrow, struck on his first shot in the 10th frame and sealed the victory.

"I'll draw from my previous experiences going into tomorrow," said the 35-year-old, who bowled on television numerous times as a 'high-roller' amateur. "But, I still just have to bowl my game."

Danny Wiseman, of Baltimore, shot two 300 games in his 3-1 victory over David Traber (300-247, 227-258, 248-246, 300-258). He will shoot for his ninth career title in the first semifinal match against defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Williams, of Ocala, Fla., will make his third consecutive championship finals appearance after beating Chris Sand, 3-0, (278-190, 225-217, 234-226). Williams, a 33-time PBA titleholder, has won this tournament three times (1996, '97, 2000).

Steve Jaros, who finished with a 9-2 record, defeated Lonnie Waliczek, 3-0, (233-176, 236-215, 213-210). Jaros, of Bolingbrook, Ill., will make his first championship round appearance of the year and will await the wild card survivor. The three-time PBA champion's last victory came in 1999 (Chattanooga, Tenn.).

Traber, of Woodstock, Ill., earned the wild card by merit of having the least losses of losers in the round of eight (7-3). He will bowl Kretzer, who had the most losses of the advancers, in the opening match. Traber's last championship round appearance was also his last title (1998; Peoria, Ill.).

After winning in Pittsburgh and playing well in Rockford everything just seems to be falling in place. My hand and ball adjustments are paying off and I'm putting up the scores I know I'm capable of on a consistent basis," said Feldman.

Traber Sends Bohn Home Early

Dave Traber

Dave Traber knocked off second-seeded Parker Bohn III in one of Sunday night's biggest upsets during the round of 32 in the PBA Johnny Petraglia Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

Traber, of Woodstock, Ill., defeated Bohn in a three-game sweep (279-232, 228-224, 219-214). The 41-year-old was facing Bohn less than an hour from the PBA Hall-of-Famerユ's home in Jackson, N.J.

"There really wasn't any pressure on me," said Traber, a four-time PBA champion. "This was his (Bohn) hometown crowd. All the pressure was on him. I had nothing to lose."

That "hometown crowd" included Parker Bohn I (grandfather) and Parker Bohn II (father).

Traber will face Lackawanna, N.Y., resident Jack Jurek in the round of 16 Monday.

Qualifying leader Chris Barnes, of Dallas, moved on after sweeping John May in three games (197-142, 214-200, 238-225). Since the PBA introduced the single-elimination, best-of-five match play format, Barnes has posted the best overall record (24-9). He will face Steve Wilson in the round of 16.

Barnes Bumps Bohn And Takes No. 1

Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes struck his way to the No. 1 seed after the second round of qualifying in the PBA Johnny Petraglia Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier Sunday afternoon.

Barnes, of Dallas, strung together 19 strikes during the first two games of the round with a 290 game followed by a 255 game that started with strikes in the first eight frames. The 31-year-old, who won his third PBA title four weeks ago in Hendersonville, Tenn., ended qualifying with an 18-game, 4,135 pinfall total and a 229 average.

"I started the round great and came to a halt after the fifth game," said Barnes, who posted a 278 in the fifth game. "I was able to stay about even near the end of the round to carry myself through."

He is making his fifth out of six top 32 appearances of the season. The former PBA Rookie of the Year (1998) has the best win-loss percentage (69%) since the PBA instituted the new single-elimination format six weeks ago.

"Qualifying first definitely boosts my confidence," Barnes said. "But when you get into match play it usually comes down to the last frame. For a guy to beat me, he's going to have to earn it."

Bohn, of Jackson, N.J., was looking to earn the No. 1 seed for the third consecutive week but had to settle for No. 2. The Jackson, N.J., resident, who owns 27 PBA titles, ended the round 74 pins behind Barnes with a 4,061 pinfall total.

The PBA Hall of Famer has made two championship round appearances under the new format with a second-place finish and a tie for third (Grand Rapids, Mich., Hendersonville, Tenn., respectively).

PBA Michael Eaton Jr., of Wyoming, Mich., captured third. Eaton, who was a collegiate bowler at Wichita State University, is making his first top 32 appearance. He registered a high game of 275 and has knocked down 4,016.

Steve Jaros, of Bolingbrook, Ill., ended as the No. 4 seed. The three-time PBA titleholder averaged 228 through the round to move up from 22nd to fourth. He is looking for his first win since 1999 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Fifth place belongs to reining PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke. Duke, who won this event in 1994, has a 3,985 pinfall total and a 221 average. He has yet to make a championship round appearance this year. The 19-time PBA champion has made a championship round appearance every year since 1985.

Tommy Delutz Jr., of Flushing, N.Y., and Pete Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., are the only two professionals to make it to the round of 32 every week since the new format began (six events). Delutz finished 17th and Weber, who won his 26th title three weeks ago in Grand Rapids, Mich., is the No. 10 seed.

Defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr. was able to advance after finishing in 22nd place. The 33-time PBA champion has won this event three times (1996, 1997 and 2000) and is looking for his second win of the year. He has finished fifth the past two weeks after losing in the wild card match.

John May, of Lincolnton, N.C., qualified 32nd after defeating Johnny Petraglia by one pin, 205-204, in a one-game roll-off. The two tied after 18 games of qualifying for 32nd with 3,828 pinfall total.

Also making the cut to the top 32 is nine-time PBA champion Jason Couch (tied for 25th). Couch is making his second consecutive top 32 appearance of the season.

Notables failing to advance include Brian Voss (35th), Bob Learn Jr. (42nd), Robert Smith (45th) and Mika Koivuniemi (55th).

  【PBA】 PBA Johnny Petraglia Open 【Round 1】

Bohn Takes The Lead; Again

Parker Bohn III

Parker Bohn III moved into familiar territory after the first round of qualifying Saturday in the PBA Johnny Petraglia Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier.

The hometown favorite from Jackson, N.J., averaged 234.77 over the nine-games to take the lead (2,113). The 1999 PBA Player of the Year, who finished third in this tournament last year, rolled high games of 257 and 268.

Bohn was the 18-game qualifying leader the last two weeks, and will look to make it three-in-a-row tomorrow. He was eliminated in the round of 32 last week by Walter Ray Williams Jr. and bowled Pete Weber for the title in Grand Rapids, where he finished second.

"Obviously being the No. 1 seed isn't the most important thing in the event, you have to win your (single-elimination) matches," said Bohn. "But if you want to pencil me in as the qualifying leader every week I'll take my chances."

The PBA Hall-of-Famer leads the Tour in season earnings ($131,050) and has now topped $100,000 in earnings for 10 consecutive years (1992-2001), a PBA record.

Tournament-namesake Johnny Petraglia, of Manalapan, N.J., averaged 216.56 in 24th place. The PBA Hall-of-Famer is looking to earn his first match play appearance in seven tournaments this season.

Chris Barnes, of Dallas, finds himself in second place (2,094). Barnes won his third title four weeks ago in Hendersonville, Tenn.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., made the cut in 31st place (1,932). He is looking to win his first title since claiming victory No. 33 here last year.

  【PWBA】 Hammers Players Championship 【Final】

LIZ JOHNSON CLAIMS HAMMER PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Liz Johnson

In what can only be described as a "clutch performance" Liz Johnson took home the title at the 2001 Hammer Players Championship. The Cheektowaga, N.Y. native defeated Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. 205-202 in the championship match and took home a first place check for $13,000. The title was the 27-year-old's 10th of her career, fourth this season and second major.

"This title has to be on of my best," said Johnson. "Winning a major is something not everyone gets a chance to do during a career. I feel very fortunate to win a title in the home of the PWBA."

After leaving the first two frames open, Johnson found herself trailing Feldman by 19-pins entering the ninth stanza. However, in one of this season's best performances under pressure, the 1996 PWBA Rookie of the Year pulled off a four-bagger and put the pressure back on Feldman. With the championship on the line, the eight-time titlest failed to pull off a double in the tenth, settling for second place and a check for $7,000.

"Michelle has been bowling very well lately," said Johnson. "I knew if I was going to have a chance to win I had to stay focused through the whole match." Luckily I had a chance to put the pressure on her in the tenth."

Entering the championship round as the No. 2 seed, Johnson faced Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas in the semi-finals and defeated the PWBA's title leader 244-183. She earned the No. 2 spot by tallying the week's best match play record of 16-7-1 along with an 11,028-pin fall and a 219.43 average.

Dorin-Ballard, who was appearing in her PWBA-record breaking 16th televised finals, took home a third place purse worth $4,600. She started the evening by knocking off fourth and fifth seeds Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. and Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. 233-152-171 in the opening shootout.ハ Johnson earned $4,200 while Kulick took home $3,700.

【PBA】 PBA Greater Detroit Open 【Final】

Allen Wins No. 1

Patrick Allen

Patrick Allen became the second new champion of the season after capturing the PBA Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes Tuesday evening.

Allen, of Tarrytown, N.Y., was uncommonly calm when he defeated Robert Smith in the title match, 236-204.

"It doesn't seem real," said Allen, who earned $40,000 for the win.

Allen, who is a four-year professional, is known for his "trash talking" on the lanes, started the match with five consecutive strikes.

"I wasn't thinking about bowling a perfect game and I wasn't getting too pumped up," commented Allen. "I wanted to keep my adrenaline in check and I had to concentrate on every shot. It's a lot easier to start out ahead then to try and catch up to your opponent."

Smith, of Simi Valley, Calif., alternated strikes and single-pin (10-pin) spares through the first five frames.Allen broke his string of strikes in the sixth frame when he left the 8-pin standing. He picked up the spare and was able to put together a double (frames seven and eight).

Smith, who was going for his third PBA title, began to loft the ball to search for the pocket. It worked for a while, as he struck in frames six and seven. However, in the eighth frame, Smith left his first split of the game, the 2-4-8-10, which resulted in an open frame. The 27-year-old tried again and left another split in the ninth frame (3-4-6-10).

Although Smith picked up the split, his ninth-frame split handed Allen the win.

"This one is your's buddy," said Smith, who earned $20,000 for second. "Enjoy it."

Allen missed the 10-pin spare in the ninth frame and finished with a spare and a strike in the 10th frame.

"Everybody bowled really well tonight," said Allen. "It was tough competition, which makes the win all the more better."

Allen advanced to the title match by defeating Jason Hurd in the semifinal match No. 1, 259-160. Hurd, of Titusville, Fla., received $10,000 for tying for third.

In the semifinal match No. 2, Smith ousted Chris Barnes, 279-255. Smith started the match with strikes in the first seven frames. Barnes, who was going for his second win of the year, also received $10,000 for finishing third (tied).

In the wild card match, Smith, who entered the finals as the wild card, defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr., 247-231. Williams took home $9,000 for his fifth-place finish.

  【PWBA】 Hammers Players Championship 【Round 6】

FELDMAN STAYS No. 1 FOR FINALS OF
$90,000 HAMMER PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Michelle Feldman

Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. went wire to wire during the preliminaries of the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship to earn the No. 1 seed for Wednesday night's televised championship round. Feldman closed out the 48-game qualifying with an 11,113 pin fall, a 222.77 average and a 14-10 record (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds).

"It's very tough to lead a tournament from beginning to end," said Feldman. "During the fifth round I lost a lot of ground so tonight I just wanted to concentrate on making the show." I made a point of limiting my mistakes and fortunately Liz didnユt catch me."

Ranking second behind Feldman is Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., who completed the week with an 11,028 total and a 219 average. Johnson will be aiming for her fourth championship of the 2001 campaign. Leading the tour in titles (6) is third seed Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. Dorin-Ballard will be making her PWBA-record 16th televised appearance in 20 tournaments.

Making her sixth championship round appearance this season is fourth seeded Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. A three-time member of Team USA, Kulick's highest finish this year was second place at the WIBC Queens. Last but not least is Tish Johnson, Northridge,Calif. who edged out Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., in the final game of the night to claim the fifth seed.

  【PWBA】 Hammers Players Championship 【Round 5】

FELDMAN KEEPS LEAD AT
$90,000 HAMMER PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Michelle Feldman

After 40 games of competition, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., holds a 39-pin margin over fellow New Yorker Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga) at the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship. With one match play round remaining before the field is cut to the top five, Feldman has a 9,282 total pin fall, a 224.55 average and a 10-6 match play record (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds).

"Today was a huge dose of reality for me," said Feldman. "I went 2-6 in the round and saw my lead dwindle down to 39-pins. It just goes to show you that anything can happen in match play and if you have a bad game, a bad round or even a bad frame, everything can change."

Seeking her second consecutive title and eighth of her career, Feldman is attempting to become just the second player this season to win a tournament "wire-to-wire." Hot on her heels, Johnson went 7-0-1 in today's block en route to a 1,927 pin fall for the round. The fifth-year pro chalked up two of the highest games of the session with a 279 and 276.

Trailing Johnson in third place is Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills,Texas, who went 7-1 in match play and has a 8,931 total. Dorin-Ballard is attempting to qualify for her 16th TV appearance in 20 tournaments this season. Ranking fourth is Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. with 8,877. Earlier this season Johnson set the tour record for consecutive tournaments played. She is currently competing in her 216th event. Rounding out the top five is four-time PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada with 8,857 and a 214.80 average. In spite of winning 19 pro titles in her career, Macpherson has never won the Hammer Players Championship but has finished second four times.

  【PBA】 PBA Greater Detroit Open 【Round 5】

Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes prepares to vie for second win in three weeks after winning in the round of 8 of the PBA Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes Monday evening.

Barnes, of Dallas, won over Mika Koivuniemi, 3-1, to advance to the ESPN finals. The 31-year-old right-hander, who was the 1998 PBA Rookie of the Year, won his third PBA title three weeks ago in Hendersonville, Tenn. In 2000, he made 12 out of 19 championship round appearances and has made four out of 14 for 2001.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., defeated Robert Smith, of Simi Valley, Calif., 3-1, to advance to his second consecutive championship round appearance and his third of the year. He finished fifth last week in Grand Rapids, Mich. The 33-time PBA champion, who is a member of the PBA Hall of Fame, averaged 253 in the four-game match and went 9-5 for the tournament. He is looking for his second win of the year after capturing the 2000 PBA National Championship, Toledo, Ohio.

Last week in Grand Rapids, Mich., Williams entered the finals as the wild card and now after Williams defeat against Smith, Smith is deemed the wild card.

I didn t realize that even if I lost the match I would still be in the finals, said Smith. But I'm still disappointed a little bit. I stayed right up there with Walter Ray the whole time and the rest was up to the gods of carry.

Smith is making his second championship round appearance of the year and is looking for his third PBA title. The 27-year-old won his first title last year in the 2000 U.S. Open, Phoenix, Ariz. Later in the year, Smith defeated Williams in the title match of the Flagship Open, Erie, Pa., to win his second career title.

Patrick Allen, of Tarrytown, N.Y., bested Steve Hoskins, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., 3-1, to advance to his first PBA telecast as a PBA member. The 31-year-old, who joined the PBA in 1999, has made two telecasts, a doubles event in 1992, where he finished fourth and the 1993 American Bowling Congress Masters, where he finished second after losing to Norm Duke in the title match (non-PBA telecast).

Jason Hurd, of Titusville, Fla., beat Paul Koehler, of Stuart, Fla., 3-2, in the only match to go the full five games in the round of 8. Hurd won his lone PBA title in the National Bowling Stadium National/Senior Doubles, Reno, Nev., with Johnny Petraglia in 1999. He is making his first championship round appearance of the year.

Attempting to win her first "major" championship, Feldman leads Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. by 392 pins. Johnson finished the round with a 5-3 record, 7,131 pins and a 218.15 average. Williams Jr. Marches On to Face Smith

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. sported a 3-2, comeback victory in the round of 16 Monday afternoon in the PBA Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes.

Williams, of Ocala, Fla., defeated rookie Jason Queen in five games, after dropping the first two (186-212, 237-266). But, the five-time PBA Player of the Year stormed back and claimed the final three games (248-224, 247-213, 234-215).

Williams struck out to end each of the final three games, including the last six in game five, and forced Queen to do the same.

The youngster crumbled with each opportunity and Williams marched on. Williams will face Robert Smith, of Simi Valley, Calif., in the round of eight.

Smith swept Larry Laub, who was the only senior to make the top 32 cut this week.

Lee Vanderhoef nearly forced a five-game match with Mika Koivuniemi, but left the 2-10 split on his second shot in the 10th frame and lost game four (213-222) and the match (3-1). Koivuniemi, of Finland, will face Chris Barnes, of Dallas, in the round of eight.

Michelle Feldman

Michelle Feldman continued her torrid pace today during round three of the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship. After 24 games the seven-time titlest is averaging 227.95 and holds a 223 pin lead over Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., who closed out the day with a 5,248 total and an 218.66 average.

"I'm bowling very relaxed right now," said Feldman. "I'm hitting my spots and getting the kind of reaction that benefits my game. I'm trying not to think too much about leading the tournament because everything can change after one bad round and with match play coming up I've got to stay focused."

Johnson, who including the Players Championship, is competing in her 215 consecutive tournament, has one title this year and is seeking the 25th of her career. 【PBA】 PBA Greater Detroit Open 【Round 3】

Koivuniemi Takes Out Weber

Mika Koivuniemi

Mika Koivuniemi eliminated Pete Weber in the round of 32 of the PBA Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes Sunday evening.

Koivuniemi, of Finland, came back from 0-2 to win over last week's champion Weber, 3-2. The 6'3" right-hander averaged 231 during the match.

"I missed a 7-pin spare in the first game to lose," said Koivuniemi. "That was the first spare I had missed the entire tournament. After losing the second game, I had to double in the 10th frame of the third and fourth game to win and the last game wasn't any easier."

"But, I advanced so that's what counts," Koivuniemi commented.

Although Koivuniemi is originally from Finland, he recently moved with his wife and two daughters to Ann Arbor, Mich.

"It's a lot better to have my family closer to me when I am traveling all over the United States with the Tour," said Koivuniemi. "We had lived here for a four year period in the mid 1990s so my oldest daughter (now seven) has really grown up here and enjoys it so that makes it easier."

He owns one PBA title, which he won in 2000 in the American Bowling Congress (ABC) Masters, Albuquerque, N.M., when he defeated Weber in the title match.

Weber, who won his 26th PBA title last week in Grand Rapids, Mich., is one of two professionals (Tommy Delutz Jr.) to make the round of 32 all five weeks since the new 2001-2002 season began.

Koivuniemi will face Lee Vanderhoef in the round of 16.

Vanderhoef, of Greenville, S.C., bested Delutz, 3-1, to stay alive. He is making his first single-elimination play appearance of the season and has a high finish of 25th for the year (ABC Masters, Reno, Nev.).

Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., ousted the No. 1 seed, Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J., 3-2, to advance to the round of 16. Williams, who finished fifth last week in Grand Rapids, Mich., was eliminated, 0-3, earlier this season by Bohn in Hendersonville, Tenn. The 33-time PBA titleholder is looking for his second win of the year after capturing the 2000 PBA National Championship, Toledo, Ohio, this past February. Williams will go against Jason Queen in the round of 16.

Jason Couch, of Clermont, Fla., defeated Michael Gaither, of Corpus Christi, Texas, 3-1, to move on to face fellow Floridian Jason Hurd in the round of 16. Couch, who owns nine PBA titles, is making is first single-elimination play appearance of the year. He is ranked No. 2 in the PBA Rankings and is also second in 2001 earnings ($93,525). Couch needs to win the event to go over the $1 million mark in career earnings (needs $35,246).

  【PWBA】 Hammers Players Championship 【Round 2】

FELDMAN IN CONTROL AT $90,000 HAMMER PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Michelle Feldman

With two rounds in the books Michelle Feldman maintained her lead at the $90,000 Hammer Players Championship by knocking down 2,120 pins and averaging 232.50 thru 16 games. Feldman holds a 184-pin margin over Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna who closed out the day with a 3,536 and a 221.00 average.

"I never get too excited about leading a tournament in the early rounds," said Feldman. "We still have 32 games to play and anything can still happen."

Coming off a win last week at the Three Rivers Open, Feldman is seeking her third title of the 2001 campaign and first "major" of her career. This season Skaneateles, N.Y native ranks sixth in earnings ($44,485), seventh in competition points (9,615.5) and ninth in averages (207.51)

DiRupo, whose last title came at the 1998 Visionary Bowling Classic, chalked up 1,780 pins during the evening block. Her best effort this season was a second place finish in June at the Greater Memphis Open.

Ranking in third and fourth place are Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. (3,512) and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada (3,512). Johnson leads the tour in earnings plus TV incentives with $115,527. She has three titles in this year and last month became just the third player in PWBA history to bowl a perfect game during a nationally televised match.

A four-time Player of the Year, Macpherson has 19 career titles to her credit, however, in spite of her widespread success the 1990s Player of the Decade has never won the Hammers Players Championship, finishing as the runner-up four times.

Rounding out the top five is Jennifer Swanson, Shelton, Connecticut. Swanson completed the round with a 3,511 total and a 217.68 average.

Three weeks ago in Hendersonville, Tenn., Bohn defeated Williams in the round of 32 (3-0).

Feldman finished the eight-game block with a 1,917 pin fall and leads Karen Stroud, Victoria, Texas by 144 pins.

"I was very loose coming into today." Anytime you just won a tournament, it's a little easier to play the next week," said Feldman. "I was getting great ball reaction and didn't have to make too many adjustments throughout the round. I just hope the lanes play the same way tonight."

A winner of two titles this season, Feldman's tournament average of 239.62 crushed the rest of the field by 18 pins. On the year the Skaneateles, N.Y. native ranks ninth among all PWBA'ers with a 207.41 clip.

Koehler Claims Top Spot In Taylor

Paul Koehler

Paul Koehler blazed ahead of the field after the first round of qualifying in the PBA Greater Detroit Open at Taylor Lanes Saturday evening.

Koehler, of Stuart, Fla., averaged 238 in the nine-game round to take the top spot. He has a 2,146 pinfall total and finished 15 pins ahead of second-place finisher Jason Hurd. The right-hander rolled a consistent round with all games between 211 and 279.
Koehler has been on Tour since 1992 and is looking for his first PBA title. Four weeks ago, Koehler made his second career championship round appearance in Peoria, Ill., and finished second. His first appearance was in the 1995 U.S. Open, Troy, Mich., where he also placed second.

Second place belongs to Hurd, of Titusville, Fla. The fourth-year pro posted high games of 290, 279 and 267 and only bowled one game below 200.

"I started off slow tonight," said Hurd. "After two games I was minus two and I made a ball switch and moved deeper inside. Immediately I began to bowl better and shot a 290 my third game."

The right-hander owns one PBA title, which he won in 1999 when he and Johnny Petraglia captured the National Bowling Stadium National/Senior Doubles, Reno, Nev. Since his win in January of 1999, Hurd has made three more championship round appearances, one in 1999 and two in 2000.

"I've been itching to make a show all year," said Hurd. "I have adapted well to the format and I really worked on my game during the break so I'm ready."

Third place belongs to Steve Hoskins. Hoskins, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., has knocked down 2,128 pins and rolled the only perfect game in the tournament. The 10-time PBA champion has made the cut to single-elimination play the past three weeks and has made it to the round of 8 the last two weeks.

Finishing in fourth place was Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J. The 27-time PBA titleholder finished second last week in Grand Rapids, Mich., after losing to Pete Weber in the title match. He has now made the first cut in four out of five events in the 2001-2002 season.

Rounding out the top five is Chris Barnes, of Dallas. Barnes, the 1998 PBA Rookie of the Year, won his third PBA title three weeks ago in Hendersonville, Tenn.

Also making the first cut was Jason Couch, of Clermont, Fla. Couch, a former PBA Rookie of the Year (1992), bowled 244 and 220 the last two games of the round to move into 50th place.

Other notables making the top 64 include Ryan Shafer (tied for 16th), Pete Weber (tied for 19th), Amleto Monacelli (27th) and Brian Voss (54th).

Failing to make the cut was defending champion Dave Wodka, who finished 96th. Wodka, of Henderson, Nev., stopped competing on the Tour full-time this past winter but chose to come back to defend his first and only PBA title. Wodka led the 1999 Greater Detroit Open and defeated Hoskins in the title match, 214-206.

Other notables failing to advance were Bob Learn Jr. (72nd), Mike Aulby (tied for 84th) and Brian Himmler (117th). This is the first week since the new season began that Himmler has not made the first cut.

Michelle Feldman

Its been three months since Michelle Feldman had won a title. Thursday night, the Skaneateles, N.Y. native claimed her second championship of the season and eighth of her career when she defeated Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah 206-191 at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

"I'm thrilled to have won here," said Feldman. "I had a lot of family and friends here watching me tonight and winning this tournament was very special."

A winner last May at the Miller High Life Open, Feldman was making her second televised appearance of the 2001. For her efforts the 25-year old earned a first place check for $9,000 and perhaps more importantly 1,000 competition points. Entering the finals as the No. 1 seed, Feldman completed the 42-game preliminaries with a 9,777 pin fall, a 16-8 match play record and a 221.35 average. With her victory Feldman will move into the top eight among all PWBA'ers in competition points and position herself to likely be a part of the $25,000 Brunswick Shootout on November 10.

Facing Turner for the first time in a televised match, Feldman jumped out to an early lead, starting the bout with a Turkey while Turner spared in the first and third frames but opened in the second. Feldman maintained a 20-pin lead after seven frames, but an open eighth gave Turner a chance to win. With the match on the line, the four-time titlest failed to pull off a double in the tenth and had to settle for second place.

"I knew I had to start off well against Tammy. I could tell from the way she was bowling in the shootout that she was going to be in the finals. She was loose and confident and looked like she was getting great ball reaction," stated Feldman.

Turner made her championship appearance by defeating Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. in the semi-finals 194-178. In the opening shootout she upended defending champ Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas and Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. 247-211-187. Turner was making her second TV appearance in her last four tournaments. She earned $4,800 as the runner up while Johnson (3rd), Dorin-Ballard (4th) and Terrell (5th) took home $3,000, $2,500 and $2,200 respectively.

  【PWBA】 Three Rivers Open 【Round 6】

FELDMAN EARNS TOP SEED AT $50,000 THREE RIVERS OPEN

Michelle Feldman

Prior to Wednesday night, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y., had been a No. 1 seed once during the 2001 PWBA season. Thursday evening, the seven-time titlest will compete in the championship round of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open as the tournament's top player. Feldman secured the position after completing the 42-game preliminaries with a 9,777 pin fall, a 16-8 match play record and a 221.35 average.

The 25-year-old will be seeking her second title of the season. Her first came on May 24 when she won the Miller High Life Open. This season Feldman ranks seventh in earnings ($35,485) and ninth in competition points (8,617) and averages (206.62).

"I'm thrilled to be back in the championship round," said Feldman. "It's been awhile. It was nice to bowl well all week and feel like I was back in contention again."

 Feldman will be joined by Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. (2nd - 9,734), Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. (3rd - 9,656), Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah (4th - 9,596), and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas (5th - 9,572).

Johnson will be attempting to win her third title of 2001 and is returning to the championship round after going three consecutive tournaments without a top 10 finish. She ranks third among PWBA'ers in titles with three and this season became just the third player in the tour's history to roll a 300 in a televised title match.

Terrell has appeared in just two televised finals this season with her best performance coming at the WIBC tournament in May where she finished third. Turner will also be making her second trip to the TV finals. A runner up for the 1996 PWBA Player of the Year honor, the former college all-American has been hindered by a back injury in the last two years, but has finished in the top 15 in her last four tournaments.

Dorin-Ballard has been the PWBA's best player this season. She leads the tour in titles (6), earnings ($99,070), competition points (13,710) and averages (214.48). A victory at the Open would tie her with Patty Costello for the most PWBA titles in a single season. Her appearance on TV will her 15th in the last 18 tournaments, tying Wendy Machperson's PWBA record set last season.

  【PWBA】 Three Rivers Open 【Round 5】

FELDMAN GRABS LEAD AT $50,000 THREE RIVERS OPEN

Michelle Feldman

After staying in the top five for the last two days, Michelle Feldman finished the fifth round today as the tournament leader as she recorded a 7-1 match play record (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds) and 1,845 pins to give her a tournament total of 7,862 at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

Feldman's tally gives the Skaneateles, N.Y. native a 97-pin lead over fellow New Yorker Liz Johnson, who completed the six-game block with a 1,781 pin fall and a 219.55 average.

A winner earlier this year at the Miller High Life Open, a top five finish for Feldman is likely to push her into the top eight in PWBA competition points and put the seven-time titlest in position to qualify for the $25,000 Brunswick Shootout on
November 10.

"Right now I'm not thinking about anything else but bowling well tonight," said Feldman. "It's not important to me to be the number one seed, I just want to make the top five and have a chance to win the tournament. Mainly, my strategy tonight is going to keep all my scores above 200 and not have a real bad game that knocks me back four or five spots."

Ranking behind Johnson in third place is four-time PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada. Macpherson, who last week won the Columbia 300 Open, was a perfect 8-0 in today's matches and moved up from ninth place. Her 7,698 total puts the 1990s Bowler of the Decade seven pins ahead of Australiaユs Maxine Nable (7,691).

Holding onto fifth place is Anne Marie Duggan with 7,670. Duggan's jump to the top five comes after ranking 23rd thru 18 games of qualifying.

Just off the top five are Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif (7,650), Tammy Turner, Ogden, Utah (7,642), defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas (7,607) and Cara Honeychurch, Australia (7,603).

【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Final】

Petey Catches Dad!
Title No. 26 and Near Perfection

Pete Weber

"I got you now dad, I got you now," is all Pete Weber could say when he won the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes Tuesday night.

Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., defeated Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J., in the championship match, 235-201, and earned his 26th career title which tied him for sixth all-time with his legendary father, Dick Weber and PBA Hall-of-Famer Don Johnson.

"He wanted me to get it as much as I did," said Weber, who earned $40,000. "Now, Pete Weber and Dick Weber can be mentioned in the same category."

The younger Weber will now set his sights on totally stepping out of dad's shadow. And the 39-year-old still has plenty of time to do it. His father didn't win title No. 26 until he was 47.

"Passing dad will always be a goal. But, I'll deal with that milestone when I get to it. Right now, I'm just enjoying this one."

In the semifinal, Weber nearly rolled the 15th televised 300 game in PBA history, but left a 4-pin on his final shot.

"I was repeating to myself: 'don't throw it slow, don't throw it slow," and that's just what I did. But, just a pinch."

He powered past three-time PBA champion Steve Wilson, of Lake Worth, Fla., 299-242, and earned his chance to make family history.

Weber threw 17 strikes in 24 possible frames throughout the two games and had the first five against Bohn in the championship.

"I had it going for me for a while there, but lost it on the left lane," said Bohn, who picked up $20,000 in second. "I'll be back."

In Bohn's semifinal, he defeated Bryon Smith, of Roseburg, Ore., 266-221. Smith, who was shooting for his first PBA title, earned $10,000 in a third place tie.

Wilson, who also finished in third after losing the semifinal to Weber, also garnered $10,000.

Rounding out the field in fifth place was wild card qualifier Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., after losing the opening match to Wilson, 222-211. Williams took home a $9,000 check.

  【PWBA】 Three Rivers Open 【Round 4】

NABLE BACK ON TOP
6-2 Match Play Record Pushes Aussie to the Front

Maxine Nable

Australia's Maxine Nable used a 6-2 match play record and a 219.80 average to propel herself back on top of the leader board at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open (Editor's note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds). Nable, who led the tournament after round one holds a 61-pin margin over Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y.

"I've had great luck her so far," said Nable. "There still is a long way to go but I'm happy with the way I've been playing."

Seeking her first title as a professional, Nable posted wins over three players in the tournament's top ten including Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (235-195, 3rd), Johnson (254-212, 2nd) and fellow Australian, Cara Honeychurch (238-214, 8th). Currently her tournament average is 24 pins about her season mark (195).

"I don't approach match play any differently than any other game," stated Nable. "Every game I try to relax and throw good shots. Hopefully the rest takes care of itself."

A winner of three titles this season, Johnson's 5,834 pin fall and 218.61 average gives her a seven-pin advantage over the defending champion, Dorin-Ballard. Unlike Nable, Dorin-Ballard is attempting to win her seventh title of the 2001 season. A victory for the N. Richland Hills, Texas native would tie her with Patty Costello for the most titles in a single PWBA season.

Moving into fourth place, Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. was one of three players during the evening to earn a 7-1 record. Her 5,824 total is 17 pins ahead of Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. who closed out the night with 5,807 and a 217.57 average.

With two match play rounds left, seven players are within 196 pins or less of breaking into the tournamentユs top five. One of those competitors is Brenda Norman, who delighted the crowd on hand by rolling the tournamentユs first 300 game.

  【PWBA】 Three Rivers Open 【Round 3】

DEFENDING CHAMP CONTINUES HER MARCH TOWARD THE TITLE

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

After 18 games of qualifying defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas leads the $50,000 Three Rivers Open chalking up a 4,030 pin fall and a 223.88 average. Dorin-Ballard holds a 51-pin margin over second place Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. who is averaging 221.05.

"In my first three games I played the high end of the bowling center and I didn't get the kind of ball reaction I needed to score as well as I should of," said Dorin-Ballard. "About midway through the round I moved right a little bit on my approach and I changed balls and I got a better reaction."

A runner up for the 2000 Player of the Year honors, Dorin-Ballard recorded the highest score of the six-game block with a 286. The 12-year pro leads the tour in titles (6), earnings ($99,070), competition points (13,710) and averages (214.48). A successful title defense would tie Dorin-Ballard with Patty Costello for most pro titles in a single season (7 - 1976).

A winner earlier this year at the Miller High Life Open, a top five finish for Feldman could garner enough competition points to position the seven-time career titlest as one of eight qualifiers for the $25,000 Brunswick Shootout, scheduled for November 10. Nicknamed "Twisted Sister," Feldman currently ranks ninth in competition points (8,617.5) and should gain ground on Kendra Gaines (9,134) who is in seventh, but will not be competing for the next three tournaments due to a broken bone in her right foot.

On the heels of Feldman and in third place is Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, N.J. A sibling of Dorin-Ballard, Dorin-Lizzi closed out the morning session with a 3,899 total and a 216.61 average. Dorin-Lizzi won her only title of her career at the 1999 Three Rivers Open.

Ranked in fourth is Australia's Maxine Nable with 3,887 pins while Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga,N.Y occupies fifth with 3,837. Just off the pace are Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla and Kelly Kulick with 3,836 and 3,821 respectively.

  【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Round 5】

Weber, Williams Jr. and Bohn III

Pete Weber

It took four tournaments, but Parker Bohn III became the first No. 1 seed to advance to the finals under the new format, after the round of eight Monday night in the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.

The Jackson, N.J., resident will shoot for his fourth title of the year after defeating Mika Koivuniemi, 3-2. Bohn trailed by one after the third game, but finished with back-to-back victories, 247-159 and 268-187. The 27-time titleholder will make his second championship round appearance in the last three tournaments. Bohn, who finished with a 9-3 match play record, will bowl No. 12 seeded, Bryon Smith in semifinal match No. 1.

Smith, of Roseburg, Ore., is in search of his first PBA Tour title. He has a career high finish of fourth place (Windsor Locks, Conn.; 1997). The eight-year pro defeated Del Ballard Jr., 3-0, and finished the round of eight with a 9-3 overall record.

Pete Weber, of St. Ann., Mo., knocked off fellow PBA Hall-of-Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., 3-2, and will target his 26th career title, which would tie his legendary father, Dick Weber. Weber, who posted a 9-4 overall record, will play the winner of the wild card match in semifinal No. 2.

Steve Wilson, of Lake Worth, Fla., joins Bohn as the first players to repeat as championship round qualifiers in the new format. Wilson, who finished fifth in the season opener (Peoria, Ill.), will look to pick up his fourth career title. Last March, Wilson won the PBA's first-ever single-elimination tournament, the Battle at Little Creek (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Wilson will face wild card qualifier Williams in the opening wild card match. Williams, of Ocala, Fla., earned the wild card spot based on having the best overall average among losers in the round of eight, after tying match play records failed to determine the spot.

  【PWBA】 Three Rivers Open 【Round 2】

DEFENDING CHAMP TAKES OVER DURING THE SECOND ROUND OF THE THREE RIVERS OPEN

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

Round two proved to be a success for Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas. The runner up for the 2000 Player of the Year award and the defending champion took over the tournament lead at the end of 12 games of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open.

Dorin-Ballard, who leads the PWBA in titles this season with six, completed the evening session by earning 1,305 pins giving her a first day total of 2,676.

"Consistency is very important during the qualifying rounds," said Dorin-Ballard. "I averaged somewhere in the 220s throughout the day and if I can keep that up tomorrow I should be in good position for match play."

Trailing Dorin-Ballard by just three pins, Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. closed out Monday with a 2,673 pin fall and a 222.75 average. Feldman is seeking her second title of the 2001 season, winning the Miller High Life Open most recently in May.

Maxine Nable, Australia fell back to third place after leading the tournament in round one. The Aussie follows Dorin-Ballard by 17 pins (2,659) and her tournament average of 221 is 26 pins above her 2001 average of 195. Fourth place belongs to Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. with a 2,641 pin fall while Rachel Perez, San Marcos, Texas is in fifth with a 2,623.

Just off the top five are Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (6th - 2,619), Linden, N.J. and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada (7th - 2,589). Macpherson posted the second highest score of round with a 277, one less than the North Carolina native Julie Jackson, who scored a 278.

Area PWBA competitors Jackie Mitskavich (Dubois - T15th, 2,512), Crystal Sciaretti (Pittsburgh - 41st, 2,261) and Sharon Cowen (Lower Burrell, 41st, 2,126) all finished the day in contention to make the top 24.

  【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Round 4】

Williams And Weber Hang On In Grand Rapids

Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. outlasted fellow hall of famer in the round of 16 in the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes Monday afternoon.

Williams, of Ocala, Fla., defeated fellow PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss, of Atlanta, 3-1. Williams, who owns 33 PBA titles, won the first two games, lost the third and came back to win the fourth game, 238-221.

"It was a great match-up," said Williams. "I was able to stay lined up most of the time but Voss was very competitive. During the third game I lost it a little bit and he took advantage of it right away. Fortunately I was able to make great shots in the last game."

The five-time PBA Player of the Year (1986, '93, '96, '97, '98) injured his neck yesterday in the second round of qualifying.
"I think it's a pulled muscle or I might have even done something to my vertebrae," said Williams. メ"I did it during the seventh game yesterday and a chiropractor came out to the center during the break and worked on it."

"A fan that was watching happened to be a massage therapist so she worked on it as well," said Williams. "Luckily it hasn't been affecting my game but I'm still trying to take it easy. I just have to try to win my matches 3-0 so I have less of a chance to re-injure it."

Williams will face Pete Weber in the round of 8 Monday evening.

Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., beat Brian Kretzer, of Dayton, Ohio, 3-2, to advance to the round of 8. Weber owns 25 titles and needs only one more win to tie legendary father Dick Weber with 26 PBA titles.

No. 1 seed Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J., defeated Tom Baker, of Buffalo, N.Y., 3-1. Bohn, who is 20-6 for the season in single-elimination play, averaged 231 through the round. The 27-time PBA titleholder has made the top 32 three times in the past four tournaments. He has won three titles in 2001 - National Bowling Stadium National/Senior Doubles, Reno, Nev., with Rohn Morton; Latham, N.Y. and American Bowling Congress Masters, Reno, Nev. Bohn will face Mika Koivuniemi in the round of eight.

Koivuniemi, of Finland, beat Mike Aulby by three pins in the deciding game, 213-210, to take the match, 3-2. The one-time PBA champion is looking to improve on a high finish of second this year (National Bowling Stadium National/Senior Doubles, Reno, NV, with Junichi Yajima).

In the first of two battles of the Floridians, Steve Wilson, of Lake Worth, Fla., ousted Paul Koehler, of Stuart, Fla., 3-1. After winning the first two games, Wilson lost the third game to Koehler, who was looking for his first PBA title. Wilson came back to win the fourth game, 224-168. He is searching for his fourth career title and his second of the year. Wilson won the 2001 Battle at Little Creek in Virginia Beach, Va., which was a single-elimination invitational event. He will face Steve Hoskins in the round of 8.

In the second Florida vs. Florida match, Hoskins, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., bested Jason Hurd, of Titusville, Fla. Hoskins, who won his 10th PBA title at the end of 2000 in Pasadena, Texas, went 3-0 to advance.

Bryon Smith, of Roseburg, Ore., defeated Patrick Allen, of Tarrytown, N.Y., 3-2, and will advance to face Del Ballard Jr. in the round of eight. Ballard, of North Richland Hills, Texas, won over Richard Wolfe, Vienna, Va., to stay alive in the bracket.

MAXINE NABLE LEADS THREE RIVERS OPEN
AFTER ROUND ONE

Maxine Nable

At the end of the first round of the $50,000 Three Rivers Open, Australia's Maxine Nable took the early lead in the 46-woman field by finishing the six game block with a 1,414 pin fall and a 235.66 average.

Nable, who is in search of her first title of her pro career, leads Laura Moriarty (1,372), Daytona Beach, Fla. by 42-pins. Her current tournament average is 46 pins ahead of her season tally of 189.09

"It feels good to get off to a good start," said Nable. "I haven't had a strong opening in any tournament all year. I know it's still early, but it's nice to be in the lead for now."

Trailing Moriarty by one pin and in third place is defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (1,371), N. Richland Hills, Texas. A two-time winner at the Three Rivers Open, Dorin-Ballard is the PWBA's hottest player with six titles to her credit and the tour leader in earnings ($103,070), competition points (13,710) and averages (214.55). Rounding out the top five is Michelle Feldman (1,344), Skaneateles, N.Y. and Kelly Kulick (1,331), Union, N.J. who are in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Kulick came within one pin of bowling a perfect 300-game in her final game of the round. The three-time member of Team USA had eleven strikes in a row before leaving the ten pin standing on her last toss of the round.

Area PWBA competitors Jackie Mitskavich (Dubois - 11th, 1,291), Crystal Sciaretti (Pittsburgh - 32nd, 1,162) and Sharon Cowen (Burrell, 41st, 1,092) all finished the day in contention to make the top 24.

  【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Round 3】

"Fruit Salad" Squashed

Parker Bohn III

Patrick Allen and Ernie Schlegel put on a "street bowling" clinic during the round of 32 Sunday night in the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.

The two bowlers, though from different generations, share a common history. Both originally made their marks bowling after-hours, big money action games in the New York area.

But it was Allen, of Tarrytown, N.Y., who defeated the veteran and PBA Hall-of-Famer, now of Vancouver, Wash., 3-2, in their best-of-five, single-elimination match.

"That was no holds barred," said Allen about the five games filled with trash talk. "I call it street bowling. I remember watching Ernie and the tour on TV, growing up in New York. He's an intense competitor and gets my competitive fire burning."

Schlegel, 58-years-old, began bowling on the PBA Tour in 1968. He's often remembered for letting his emotions run free on the lanes during his prime - which he coined, "fruit salad."

"Fruit salad" made a comeback tonight.

"That's what the game is all about," said Schlegel after the match. "It's like a boxing match. People don't want to watch a bunch of stiffs bowl."

At the end of the decisive fifth game, Allen and Schlegel were the lone bowlers remaining with hundreds of fans looking on. Allen, a fourth-year pro, struck on his first shot in the 10th frame for victory and sprinted down the empty approaches in celebration.

All Schlegel could do was hang his head.

"I'll be in Taylor next week," he said about the PBA Tour's next stop, the PBA Greater Detroit Open.

Earlier in the day, Allen bowled a 300 game in the second round of qualifying which allowed him to easily make the match play cut.

"It was an interesting day to say the least," the 30-year-old said. "Maybe my best day as a pro.モ"

In other matches, top-seeded Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J., made quick work of Tommy Delutz Jr., 3-0, and set up a round of 16 match with fellow PBA Hall-of-Famer Tom Baker. Baker, the 16th seed, defeated rookie Tommy Jones in the round's fifth swept match.

  【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Round 2】

Bohn Climbs To No. 1 Spot In Grand Rapids

Parker Bohn III

Parker Bohn III earned No. 1 seed after the second round of qualifying in the PBA at Spectrum Lanes Sunday afternoon.

Parker Bohn III blasted through the second round with a 228 average to take the No. 1 seed heading into single-elimination play. The PBA Hall of Famer, whose 27 PBA titles include three wins in 2001, started the day in 17th place and finished with a 26-pin lead over second-place finisher Paul Koehler. He has an 18-game 4,016 pinfall total and a 223 tournament average.

Bohn, of Jackson, N.J., will face Tommy Delutz Jr. in the Round of 32 Sunday evening. Delutz, who owns one PBA title, was the No. 1 seed last week in the PBA Miller High Life Open in Indianapolis.

Koehler, of Stuart, Fla., is making his second single-elimination play appearance of the season. Three weeks ago Koehler finished second in Peoria, Illinois, after making his second career championship round appearance. The 31-year-old right-hander has been on Tour since 1992 and is still searching for his first career title.

Pete Weber ended the round in third. The PBA Hall of Famer is looking to make his first championship round appearance since he finished fourth in The Villages, Fla., this past winter.

Jumping up from 10th place to grab the No. 4 seed was Del Ballard Jr., of North Richland Hills, Texas. Ballard, who is making his second consecutive single-elimination play appearance, averaged 216 through the round with high games of 268 and 269.

The 12-time PBA champion returned to the PBA Tour full-time for the 2001-2002 season. Ballard competed full-time on the Tour from 1984 - 1998 before taking a two-year break.

Patrick Allen, of Tarrytown, N.Y., rounds out the top five. In game two of the block, Allen rolled the second 300 game of the tournament.

Also making the cut is PBA Hall of Famers Walter Ray Williams Jr. (No. 6), Mike Aulby (No. 9), Brian Voss (No. 11) and Ernie Schlegel (No. 28), Chris Barnes (No. 15), Bob Learn Jr. (No. 21), and Brian Himmler (No. 29).

PBA notables failing to make the second cut include Robert Smith (No. 55), Rudy Kasimakis (No. 56), and Doug Kent (No. 62).

  【PBA】 PBA Great Lakes Classic 【Round 1】

Ball Change Carries Barnes

Chris Barnes

Chris Barnes continued his consistent play and led the first round of qualifying in the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes Saturday.

Barnes, of Dallas, who grabbed career victory No. 3 just two weeks ago (Hendersonville, Tenn.), sits atop the field after posting a 2,045, nine-game pinfall total.

The three-time PBA titleholder made a quick strategy adjustment to open the day.

"I wanted to play the gutter (1-2 board)," he said. "But, my first shot wiggled and left a 2-pin. So, I switched to a stronger X-Zone (Brunswick) and struck out for a 290. In this format, a quick start usually helps."

"I'm in real good shape," said Barnes about his solid start. "But, I would like to be a top seed. I feel like that gives me an advantage in the first match."

The top 32 qualifiers are seeded into single-elimination bracket match play after tomorrow morningユs second nine-game qualifying round.

Bowling in just his fourth PBA tournament, rookie Brian Kretzer, of Dayton, Ohio, sits in the second position with 2,033 pins. Searching for his third match play berth, Kretzer started the day slowly with a 172, followed by a 198, but averaged 237.57 in the last seven games, including a 296.

Mike Aulby, of Indianapolis, finds himself in third place with 2,027 pins. Aulby, who won his 27th career title earlier this year, bowled seven scores between 225 and 247.

After toppling 2,022 pins in fourth place, Walter Ray Williams Jr., of Ocala, Fla., will try to earn his second single-elimination match play appearance of the season. The five-time PBA Player of the Year is ranked third all-time with 33 PBA Tour titles, one behind Mark Roth.

Kurt Pilon, of Warren, Mich., rolled the only 300 game of the round and captured fifth place. The right-hander won his first career title in Peoria, Ill., three weeks ago.

18-time titleholder Amleto Monacelli, of Venezuela, missed the top 64 cut after three straight match play appearances. Other notables who missed the cut are: Norm Duke (88th), Danny Wiseman (73rd) and Ryan Shafer (68th).

Players forced to withdraw were Rick Steelsmith (knee) and Jeff Lizzi, who cut his thumb Friday.

For the first time in eight tries this season Wendy Macpherson was victorious in a championship match as the four-time PWBA Player of the Year defeated Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif. 257-169 en route to the $75,000 Columbia 300 Open Championship. In spite being her first title of 2001, the victory marks Macphersonユs 19th of her illustrious career.

For her victory, the 1990s Player of the Decade earned a check for $11,000 to increase her 2001 earnings, plus TV incentives to $69,590. Last season Macpherson became just the second player in PWBA history to earn over a million dollars after she earned a second place purse at the 2000 Columbia Open.

"I wanted to put forth a clean game tonight," said Macpherson. "I've struggled a little bit in my TV matches this year and I wanted to make sure if I lost, it wasn't because of a bad game."

Entering the title match as the tournament's No. 1 seed, Macpherson held a 5-6 record this season against Barrette in televised matches. Prior to this evening, Macpherson was averaging 188.31 in TV performances, however tonight she dominated play chalking up an eight-bagger from the second frame through the ninth while Barrette left three open frames in the third, sixth and tenth.

"Leanne is a great champion and when she's hot, she's tough to beat." I just wanted to keep the momentum going once I started rolling strikes because you never know when your hot streak is going to stop and when your opponent is going to get hot."

Tonight's television appearance was Macpherson's fourth in the last six tournaments. In her last seven efforts she has finished second - three times, third - once, fourth - twotimes and fifth - once.

Placing second, Barrette took home a check for $6,000. Tonight was her fifth consecutive showing in a championship round. Barrette closed out the sixth round of the tournament as perhaps the week's hottest bowler as she averaged 251 in her final five games including bowling 300.

Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Oklahoma, completed the Open in third place. Duggan started the night defeating Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. and Cheryl Daniels, West Bloomfield, Michigan, 222-192-181 in the opening shootout. She was defeated in the semi-finals 145-141 by Barrette. Duggan earned $4,700 while Kulick and Daniels banked $3,700 and $3,000 respectively.

  【PWBA】 Columbia 300 Open 【Round 6】

MACPHERSON EARNS No. 1 SEED

Wendy Macpherson

Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada claimed the top seeded position Wednesday night at the $75,000 Columbia 300 Open. The reigning PWBA Player of the Year chalked up a 9,693 pin fall and an 219.35 average to earn her second No. 1 seed of the 2001 campaign.

"I very pleased with the way I performed this week," said Macpherson. "I've had some trouble in the last few tournaments closing out the final rounds with good scores. Tonight I was very relaxed and played without pressure."

Macpherson led almost all scorers in Wednesday evening's sixth round with a 1,756 tally. She finished the 42-game preliminaries with a 374-pin lead over Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif.

A finalist in eight tournaments this season, Macpherson is seeking her first title of 2001. The 1990s Player of the Decade currently ranks fifth in earnings, fourth in competition points and fifth in averages.

"Tonight seemed to be ideal conditions for a lot of us." We had a 300 game and several high scores so it should set up for a great finals on Thursday."

Barrette, who started the evening in 14th place, 236 pins off the top five, finished with the strongest round of the night by blasting off 1,973 pins. The 23-time titlest closed out her last five games averaging 251 including rolling the tournament's only 300 game.

Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J, ended the qualifying period in third position with a 9,294 total. For Kulick, the TV appearance will be her fourth of 2001. Closing out the top five are Anne Marie Duggan (9,227) and Cheryl Daniels (9,216).

Wendy Macpherson

With the sixth round looming tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Tiki Lanes, Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nevada managed to hold off PWBA rookie Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J. and keep the tournament lead at the $75,000 Columbia 300 Open.

Macpherson led all scorers in the fifth round with a 1,841pin fall, adding to her 7,727 total. Averaging 219.32, she holds a 197-pin lead over Kulick.

"I averaged about 230 in today's round which really helped me stay in front because I was .500(4-4) in my matches," said Macpherson. "With only 173 pins separating me from the 13th position anything can still happen so my strategy is to establish some consistency tonight and not have a bad game in the block."

Kulick, who has qualified for the TV finals three times in 2001, rung up 1,624 pins and a 6-2 record (Editor note - players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds). The three-time Team USA member tallied wins in today's round over three of the tournament's top ten including Macpherson (245-233), Kim Adler,Cocoa, Fla. (203-166) and Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. (223-217).

Posting a 7-0-1 record, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas moved from 11th place to third.ハ A runner up for the 2000 PWBA Player of the Year award, Dorin-Ballard has racked up 7,406 pins.ハ If she qualifies for Thursday's televised finals, it would be her 15th appearance in 18 tournaments. The 15 appearances would tie Macphersonユs PWBA record that was set in 2000 season.

Cheryl Daniels, West Bloomfield, Michigan (7,406) and Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Michigan (7,402) are in possession of the fourth and fifth positions. Both Daniels and Bishop were top five finalists last week at the N. Myrtle Beach Classic. Just outside the box, looking in are sixth place Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. and Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y. Terrell is just 72 pins shy of Bishop while Johnson is 93 pins behind.

【PBA】 PBA Miller High Life Open 【Final】

Arnold Takes Title No. 3

Dave Arnold

Dave Arnold captured his third career victory in the PBA Miller High Life Open at Woodland Bowl Tuesday evening.

Arnold, of Reno, Nev., controlled the lanes during the title match to defeat Roger Bowker, 222-160, and earn his largest paycheck ever, $40,000.

"It feels great to finally win again," said Arnold, whose last title came in 1996. "I've been working really hard lately and it's good to see it has finally paid off."

The 6'3" right-hander got dialed in early in the match while his opponent struggled throughout the game.

After a converted single-pin spare in the first frame (9-pin) and an open in the second (4-7 combination), Arnold tripped the 2-pin in the third frame for a lucky strike which led to a メthree-bagger.

"I was lined up the whole time," Arnold said. "I knew Roger couldn't figure it out but I made myself focus on my own game and worried about my shots."

Bowker, who earned $20,000 for second, was lost from the start of the match and left an open in the first frame as he was unable to convert the 3-9-10 baby-split. He would strike in the second frame but follow it with the 2-8-10 split to lead to his second open frame.

"I couldn't have guessed what to do in the match," Bowker said. "I was completely lost."

Arnold struck through the fifth frame and did not miss the pocket. In the next two frames, he suffered two solid 8-pins after hitting the pocket on both shots.

"Those 8-pins shocked me but they didn't get me too rattled," commented Arnold. "I made good shots and was so far ahead. I just focused on picking up the spare."

Bowker, of Ocala, Fla., continued to struggle, adding another open in the eighth frame (4-6-7 split).</
