 Three memorial services have been planned to celebrate the life of American Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Earl Anthony, who died Tuesday, Aug. 14, from head injuries sustained in a fall while visiting a friend in Milwaukee, Wis.

 The Anthony family has announced memorial services will be held in each of the communities which played an important part in his life:

 -Monday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Life Center, 1717 S. Union St., Tacoma, Wash.;

 -Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m., at The Hideaway picnic retreat, 39777 NW Murtaugh Rd., North Plains, Ore. (take exit 55 off Oregon Highway 26 about 20 miles west of Portland and follow the signs to The Hideaway);

 -Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 2601 San Ramon Valley Rd., San Ramon, Calif. (for directions to the church, call 925/830-0600).

 "These have been extremely difficult times for our family as we try to recover from the shock of Earl's untimely passing," Anthony's wife Susie said in a statement. "The loss we feel is very great and very painful. But we can't begin to express our appreciation for the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from Earl's friends and fans from around the world.

 "The memorial services we have planned will be a celebration of his life, which has had such a profound impact not only on our family, but on the lives of countless others as well.

 "In keeping with Earl's wishes," she added, "the family asks that in lieu of cards or flowers, memorial contributions in his name be sent to the following organizations which he strongly supported: American Red Cross, Oregon Trail Chapter, P.O. Box 3200, Portland, OR 97208; EarthSave, Portland Chapter, 13376 SW Chelsea Loop, Tigard, OR 97223, and The Salvation Army, Cascade Division, P.O. Box 8798, Portland, OR 97208.

 The family also has requested the news media respect the family's need for privacy at this time.

PBA Great Earl Anthony Dead at 63

Earl Anthony

 On Tuesday, August 14 the bowling world received the news of the sudden loss of the most prolific Professional Bowlers Association champion in the history of the sport. Sources have verified that 41-time National Tour titleist and PBA Legend, Earl Anthony, died while visiting a friend in Wisconsin.

 Anthony was unquestionably the PBA's winningest player, having won 41 National Tour titles, ten Major Titles (two Tournament of Champions, six PBA National Championship titles and two ABC Masters Titles), 42 second-place finishes, 144 top-five finishes, and six PBA Player of the Year awards. Anthony was also the first player to eclipse the $1 million mark in official PBA earnings, accomplishing the feat by winning his fifth PBA National Championship title in a memorable finale on ABC-TV.
Throughout the 1970's and early 1980's, Anthony was instrumental in the growth of the PBA, standing in as a symbol of athletic excellence through his competitive dominance and regal demeanor. He was elected Bowler of the Decade for the 1970's, and was widely considered the face of the PBA during that time as well.

 Anthony was also greatly revered for his perseverance and will to win, as evidenced by his early struggles in PBA Tour competition in 1963. After six years of practice in his native Tacoma, Wash., Anthony returned to the Tour in 1969, and preceded to win seven tournaments in the next four years. By 1976, Anthony had become the PBAユs all-time winningest player, surpassing Dick Weber with his 27th PBA title.

 "Words cannot express the sadness that my family and I are feeling at this time," said Weber, who added, "Earl was a great bowler, a great man, and a great friend. We will all miss him terribly."
Today, Anthony is still regarded by fans and experts as one of the most legendary and popular figures in the sport of bowling. His success in PBA competition helped boost participation in the sport to its highest historical levels, and his retirement from the Tour after winning PBA Player of the Year honors in 1983 was widely regarded as one of the most graceful exits from major athletic competition in the history of sport. His support of the PBA was manifest through his participation in the fledgling Senior Tour, as well as his work as an expert commentator on many PBA broadcasts throughout the 1990's.
The PBA offered the following statement, "The Professional Bowlers Association is saddened by the loss of Earl Anthony. He was a pioneer in the sport of bowling and will be remembered by millions for his many appearances on PBA telecasts. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family."
