DORIN-BALLARD MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW AT $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, won her second consecutive title and fourth title of 2001 Thursday night at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open, defeating Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., 225-196 in the title match.

@Dorin-Ballard was more tentative in her victory at FunQuest Lanes than she had been the previous week in the Ft. Worth Classic. "I didn't like my ball reaction on the lanes and was hoping I wouldn't leave anything disastrous out there," she admitted. "I found the approach on the right lane a little slippery and I wasn't sure of my footing. So I put a little tape in the ball to get a better grip on it, to throw it a little harder with a little less roll. My primary concern tonight was holding the ball in the pocket and getting it down the lane a little better, because I knew Marianne had pretty good reaction. I picked a ball that would keep me in the pocket."

@Despite her game plan, Dorin-Ballard came up shy of the pocket on several shots, as did DiRupo. Dorin-Ballard's break came in the seventh frame, when she crossed over and carried a flush Brooklyn strike, while DiRupo left a soft 7-pin. The lucky strike gave Dorin-Ballard a three-bagger and a 27-pin lead at that point that DiRupo was unable to overcome.

@Dorin-Ballard won $9,000 for her 14th career title, while DiRupo settled for $4,800. DiRupo advanced to the title match by defeating Carol Gianotti-Block of Australia in the semifinal game, 206-171.

@Gianotti-Block earned the right to challenge DiRupo by winning the opening shootout with Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., 231-205-182. Gianotti-Block took home $3,000 for third place, Gaines $2,500 for fourth, and Macpherson $2,200 for fifth.

DORIN-BALLARD CLAIMS TOP SEED FOR FINALS OF $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

@For the second week in a row, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of N. Richland Hills, Texas, is the tournament leader going into the TV championship round as match play concludes at FunQuest LanesÕ $50,000 Greater Memphis Open.

@Dorin-Ballard stormed into the top spot Wednesday morning and solidified her position in the Wednesday night block by posting an 18-6-0 match play record. She averaged 225.92 with 10,029 pins, finishing 435 pins ahead of second-place Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., DiRupoÕs 17-7-0 match play record earned her 9,594 pins and a 216.28 average.

@"[PWBA player] Anne Marie Duggan says you can be bowling great for seven, nine, 12 weeks in a row, but you never know when it might end," Dorin-Ballard said when questioned about the spurt that pulled her up from third place the previous night. "But it's obvious that when you're bowling well, something is clicking for you. You kind of want to go with it and not start thinking too far ahead. So instead of focusing on how well I've been bowling these past few weeks, I try to concentrate on the next day only.
"On this type of lane condition, you can never give up, because things can change around a lot in a day. I came in with a game plan today, and it worked. I did get a little mentally tired on the lanes Wednesday evening, but I think it was just a drop in the adrenaline, because I'd been on such a high all day."

@Dorin-Ballard and DiRupo will be joined in the championship round Thursday night by Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla.; Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; and Carol Gianotti-Block, Perth, Australia. Gaines finished just seven pins behind DiRupo with 9,587 pins and a 15-9-0 match play record. Macpherson, the 2000 PWBA Player of the Year, claimed a 13-11-0 record and 9,541 pins, while Gianotti-Block sewed up fifth place with 9,470 pins and a 15-9-0 record.

DORIN-BALLARD ASSUMES LEAD IN $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, moved to the top of the charts during Wednesday morning's match play round in the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open, underway at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

@Dorin-Ballard, whose victory last week at the Ft. Worth Classic was her third of the 2001 season, won seven matches and turned in an eight-game block score of 1,827 pins to take over the lead. She has a total pinfall of 8,029, a 225.55 average, and a 12-4-0 match play record going into the final session of match play Wednesday evening.

@Currently in second and bidding to make her second TV show of the year is Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev. The reigning PWBA Player of the Year holds an 11-5-0 record with 7,815 total pins, for a 220.14 average. She is trailing Dorin-Ballard by 214 pins.

@"The reason I'm in first place right now is that I won seven matches and had three really good games," said Dorin-Ballard, who included scores of 267, 278 and 257 in her early block. "This has been a very long and hard swing, given the distances between tournaments and the concentration required to bowl on the Sport Bowling condition. I've been finding myself wandering mentally a little bit this week. I've been trying to keep tabs on when that happens, and when it does, I walk away from the playing area, or talk to someone - I try to do something to 'wake myself up' and refocus on the lanes."

@Tuesday night's leader, Kendra Gaines, is in third place with 7,696 pins and a 9-7-0 match play record, while Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., follows in fourth, with 7,601 pins and an 11-5-0 record. DiRupo has rolled the tournamentÕs lone perfect game thus far.

@Rounding out the top five is Lynda Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, with a 9-7-0 record and 7,588 pins.

@Memphis' Pam Vickery, the only local bowler to reach the match play round, won four matches Wednesday morning and is in 24th place. Vickery is averaging 199.55 with 6,995 total pins and a 7-9-0 match play record.

KENDRA GAINES MOVES INTO LEAD AT $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Kendra Gaines

@Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., soared into the lead at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville Tuesday night, thanks in large part to a 290 game in the midst of an eight-game series of 1,950 pins.

@Gaines, who owns one PWBA title, didn't roll the high game of the round, however. That honor went to Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., who scored the tournament's first 300 two games earlier - in a match against Gaines. DiRupo, who is averaging 220.38, compiled a perfect 8-0-0 match play record and stands in second place, 18 pins behind Gaines, who has 5,988 total pins and a 223.38 tournament average. The Floridian fashioned a 6-2-0 record Tuesday night.

@"I think the last time I led a tournament was during a round in Sebring in 1998, and that was the tournament I won," Gaines said. "I've been working very hard with John [Gaines, her husband] to be more patient and stay in the moment when I'm competing. 've also worked on keeping my feet slow and letting the ball do the work. I'm finally seeing the results of this on the lane, so my brain is allowing my body to accept the new way of doing it. Before this, my body was still trying to manufacture the results on the lane."

@Gaines, who edged into the TV finals in the Ft. Worth Classic, says the touring pros are starting to solve the puzzle that the Sport Condition presents, and as a result, more players are moving in and out of the leader board at an event. "One thing about the Sport Condition pattern is that it keeps everyone within reach. You can still make a move, even if you're not bowling that well, by hanging in there and rolling a good game or two."

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, remains in third place after boosting her total pinfall to 5,950 with a 5-3-0 match play record. Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., holds fourth place with 5,938 pins following a 7-1-0 match play performance, while Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., retains fifth place. Macpherson has 5,894 pins and a 5-3-0 record.

@Early leader Aleta Sill, Dearborn, Mich., won just one match Tuesday night and slipped into 10th place, with a pinfall count of 5,587. Memphian Pam Vickery also tumbled in Tuesday night's action, slipping to 23rd place with a 3-5-0 record and 5,308 pins.

SILL MAINTAINS LEAD AT $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Aleta Sill

@Dearborn, Mich.'s Aleta Sill, seeking her 32nd career title, continues to set the pace at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at FunQuest Lanes as the tournament moves into its match play phase.

@Sill remained in front of the pack by weaving together games ranging from 188 to 258. Her 1,301-pin series for Tuesday morning's final six games of qualifying gives her 4,000 total pins, a 222.22 average, and a 25-pin advantage over Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who checked in with 3,975 pins and a 220.83 average. Duggan put together a 1,352 series Tuesday morning, topped by a 257 game, to jump two places in the standings.

@"If I can keep myself from pulling the ball down in the downswing, and keep my armswing loose from the shoulder, I have a good chance on this condition," Sill said "My tendency is to want to help the ball, but all that does on the Sport Condition is make it go 'uphill' and hook too early. I'm seeing the same thing with a lot of the bowlers on tour who are experiencing the Sport Condition for the first time - I'm a coach, and I can't turn my eyes off when I bowl. If you allow yourself to tighten up, you start grabbing onto the ball and on this condition, that's the worst thing you can do.

@"It's the same thing that Anne Marie has been talking about the past couple of weeks - you've got to swing loosely from the shoulder to take advantage of the condition."

@In third is the hottest bowler on tour this year, with three victories to date, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of N. Richland Hills, Texas. She is averaging 219.50 with 3,951 pins. Lynda Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, follows with 3,881 pins and a 215.61 average, while Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., moves into the fifth position with 3,877 pins and a 215.38 average.

@Memphis' Pam Vickery completed her 18 games of qualifying in 19th place, with 3,660 pins and a 203.33 average.

'LEDER' IS STILL THE LEADER AT THE $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Aleta Sill

@Dearborn, Mich.'s Aleta Sill, who answers to the nickname 'Leder,' is just that after 12 games of the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

@Sill inflated her total pinfall to 2,699 by the end of Monday evening's qualifying round to average 224.91 and lead her nearest challenger, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, by 53 pins. Ballard is averaging 220.50 with 2.646 pins. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., is in third place, 20 pins behind Dorin-Ballard, with a 218.83 average.
Sill admitted that playing defensively probably cost her some pins, as she rolled two games in the 190s after deciding against a ball change late in the round.

@"I probably should have changed equipment, but I decided to gut it out instead because I'd been doing so well with just one ball," she said. "What is nice is that, as the leader, I can go into Tuesday morning's competition knowing I can relax a little and that I'm not on the bubble to make the cut to the top 24. When you're in a position where you're forced to bowl well, you tend to make bad choices. That makes you tighten up and you start making bad shots."

@Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who rolled a perfect game last week in the Ft. Worth Classic, came within three pins of being perfect again Monday with a 297 game, the high for the tournament thus far. She is in fourth place with 2,623 pins and a 218.58 average, while Lynda Barnes, Flower Mound, Texas, sits in fifth with 2,613 pins and a 217.75 average.

@The Memphian mother-and-daughter combo of Pam Vickery and Deborah Warner are in 27th and 33rd place, respectively, with pinfall counts of 2,361 and 2,335.

ALETA SILL SPRINTS INTO THE LEAD AT $50,000 GREATER MEMPHIS OPEN

Aleta Sill

@Aleta Sill of Dearborn, Mich., the first professional woman bowler to cross the million-dollar barrier in career earnings, is in the lead after six games at the $50,000 Greater Memphis Open, underway at FunQuest Lanes in Collierville.

@Sill opened with a 182 game but then had nothing lower than 234 as she fashioned a six-game series of 1,400 pins for a 233.33 average. She admits that the past year has been a struggle as she's tried to adjust to a variety of changes in her game and herself. "I've been trying to develop a softer hand with my shot. My generation of bowlers is used to doing more with the ball, throwing it harder and manipulating it; but the Sport Condition doesn't accommodate that well. It rewards bowlers who have a clean, fluid release, and it's very important to have the right ball in hand to match up with the condition. If you don't have the right ball, and you don't execute properly, those errors are going to be magnified in the ball's reaction on the lane. It's not uncommon to change strike balls two, three or even four times during a block now, to stay on top of the lane transition. You also need to learn when to make the change, and which ball to select."

@"What makes it extra difficult is when you've experienced being on top in your sport and then have to start over again. It affects your confidence every week when you're in that position."

@Maxine Nable of Australia is Sill's nearest competitor after the first block of qualifying, with 1,353 pins and a 225.50 average. The 2000 PWBA Player of the Year Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., is third with 1,319 pins and a 219.83 average. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is in fourth with 1,297 pins and a 216.16 average, while Kim Adler sits in fifth with 1,288 pins and a 214.66 average. Adler won the most recent PWBA tournament held in the Memphis area, the 1997 Sam's Town Tunica Mid-South Classic.

@Pam Vickery, Memphis, Tenn., is the top local in the standings. The seven-year pro is 33rd with 1,155 pins and a 192.50 average.

EYES OF TEXAS SMILE ON DORIN-BALLARD IN $50,000 FT. WORTH CLASSIC FINALS

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, eclipsed Las Vegas' Dede Davidson in front of her Texas hometown fans, 217-213, in the final match to win the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic at Don Carter CityView Lanes and $9,000 first prize.

@Tournament leader Dorin-Ballard won her 13th professional title and third championship this year sitting on the bench as Davidson left the 3-6-7 split on her first ball in the 10th frame. Dorin-Ballard had trailed throughout the match until the 10th, when she nailed a strike on her first ball to double up the strike she carried in the ninth.

@"I will share this now with a lot of people who are close to me and are my friends." Dorin-Ballard said, adding with a laugh, "but most important of all, I want everyone to know I now have more pro titles than [my husband] Del Ballard!"

@Dorin-Ballard said she was unexpectedly puzzled by Lane 27 of the championship pair, which she had thought in practice would be her good lane; she had only two strikes on it. "I don't know what happened out there. I liked what I saw at the start but then it wasn't so great. I just knew I had to make good shots to keep up with Dede, because she had been bowling great all night in her previous matches."

@Davidson, who qualified in the fifth position for the TV finals, moved into the title bout by first defeating Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., and Cara Honeychurch, Australia, in the opening shootout match, 224-189-180, and then Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., in the semifinal, 232-202. Davidson's reward for the night's work was $4,800. Johnson took home $3,000, while Honeychurch and Gaines claimed $2,500 and $2,200, respectively. CAROLYN DORIN-BALLARD SECURES TOP SEED AT $50,000 FT. WORTH CLASSIC

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard showed no mercy in the final round of match play at the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic, rolling a 264 in her closing game to command the top seed for the TV championship round Thursday night at Don Carter CityView Lanes.

@Dorin-Ballard's 42-game pinfall of 9,880 and match play record of 16-7-1 took her to a commanding 289-pin lead over second-place Liz Johnson, who closed with 9,591 pins and a 13-11-0 record. Dorin-Ballard averaged more than four pins a game better than Johnson, and more than10 pins a game better than third-place Cara Honeychurch of Australia, who took third with 9,373 pins and a 14-10-0 record.

@"My nerves were a little better tonight, but I'm glad it's over," Dorin-Ballard said of bowling in front of a hometown audience. "It's nice to be in the limelight, but it does put a little more pressure on you."

@"It's been the characteristic of the Sport Bowling conditions that you either have to go way right or way left on the lane as the evening wears on, but tonight it was difficult to move inside. The shot just wasn't there. I was able to move left a little so that I could go around some of the carrydown."

@If Dorin-Ballard's finish came as no surprise to anyone, Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., provided the upset of the night. In seventh after 41 games, Gaines used the position round to move around both Marianne DiRupo and Anne Marie Duggan after the latter two opened in the 10th frame and gain the fourth position on the stepladder. Gaines finished with 9,285 pins and a 12-10-2 record. Dede Davidson, Las Vegas, claimed the fifth and final spot with 9,282 pins and a 16-7-1 match play record. DiRupo settled for sixth, 13 pins behind Davidson, while Duggan closed 45 pins off the pace for the TV show.

DORIN-BALLARD SKYROCKETS INTO FIRST AT $50,000 FT. WORTH CLASSIC

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, averaged 232.22 in the Wednesday morning round at Don Carter CityView Lanes to carve out a 107-pin advantage over her nearest rival, Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., in quest of the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic championship.

@Dorin-Ballard, who is seeking her third victory of the season, boosted her overall match play record to 10-5-1 and total pinfall to 7,774 after a slow start that found her in 19th place after the first round Monday. She has a 219.38 average for the tournament thus far, compared to Johnson's 218.44 average and 8-8-0 match play record.

@"I was a little angry with myself Monday; I knew I did not bowl as well as I should have. It took me five games to get lined up, while Liz was bowling phenomenally. I saw where she was playing, knew where I should be playing, and just tried to hang in until I got my feel back," Dorin-Ballard said.

@"Based on what I saw Tuesday night, and this morning, I think we're likely to see a variety of conditions on the lanes for the last match play round. Some lanes are going to have a little 'hang' from the oil carrydown, and some are going to be hooking a lot. So I will need to have a couple of balls drilled for each condition to be prepared for all possibilities."

@Another Texan, Karen Stroud of Victoria, is holding onto third place with 7,496 pins and an 11-5-0 match play record. Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., recovered from an early slump Wednesday morning to claim fourth place, with 7,454 pins and a 6-10-0 record. Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is 10 pins behind Terrell at 7,444, with an 11-5-0 record. HONEYCHURCH CLAIMS THE LEAD AT $50,000 FT. WORTH CLASSIC

@Cara Honeychurch of Australia, coming off a victory last week in the Greater San Diego Open, took over the lead Tuesday night at the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic, underway at Don Carter CityView Lanes.

@Honeychurch built a 7-1-0 record for the first eight games of match play to accumulate 5,831 pins and a 216.19 average. She is leading Kelly Kulick, Union, N.J., by 26 pins and hometown favorite Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, by 96 pins.

@"My match play record is the reason I'm leading right now," Honeychurch said. "It hasn't clicked in for me yet. I had two nice games of 245 and 224, but I've been in the low 200s for the most part, and I don't think that's going to be good enough to even make the top five and the TV show. I need to find a way to knock down 10 more pins a game, and I think that means a change of equipment for tomorrow. Some of the girls got some really good reaction with the balls they were using tonight, and I'm going to have to keep up with them."

@Kulick's 5,805 pins and 7-1-0 match play record are good enough for second place at the moment. Dorin-Ballard is in third with 5,735 pins and a 5-3-0 record. Karen Stroud, Victoria, Texas, vaulted from 20th place to fourth with an eight-game series of 1,826 to bring her total pinfall to 5,718. Stroud also compiled a 7-1-0 match play record.

@Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., rounds out the top five with 5,669 pins and a 6-2-0 match play record. Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., who led the first three rounds of the tournament, faltered and finished Tuesday nightÕs session in seventh place with 5,645 pins and a 2-6-0 record.

@Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., is the tournament leader going into the match play phase of the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic, underway at Don Carter CityView Lanes.

@Johnson averaged 223.22 for 18 games of qualifying with 4,018 pins, 97 pins better than the effort posted by Cara Honeychurch of Australia, who checked in with 3,921. Honeychurch, who won last week's Greater San Diego Open, is averaging 217.83.

@"I didn't find the lanes any different today, so I got to play my 'A' game again," said Johnson, whose Tuesday morning scores ranged between 199 and 246. "I'm very happy with the way I'm bowling at this point in the season; I've made the TV show twice and won one tournament. I think I've exceeded even my expectations at this point, to be leading again this week."

@Johnson suffers from a herniated disk in her back, which causes her chronic pain, but she says she is managing it as well as can be expected. "I'm stiff at the beginning of a squad, but the muscles gradually loosen up as I bowl more. I do my stretches and exercises pretty faithfully. All I can do is take things one day at a time with this type of condition, so I'm extremely satisfied with what I've been able to do this swing."

@Debbie McMullen, Denver, Colo., moved up from fifth to third following Tuesday morning's qualifying round, averaging 215.94 with a pinfall of 3,887.

"It seemed to me that a lot more people were playing inside, and I decided to stay outside. I felt that the outside line gave me more play and more hold. It's the same kind of strategy I was able to use at the St. Clair Classic, which I won. I watched to see where everyone was moving, and then I went the opposite way.

@"I still have to make some better shots, though. I let myself get distracted from time to time by what I think other people are scoring, and that takes me out of my own game."

@Johnson's total pinfall of 2,669 gives her a 222.41 average for the first 12 games. Second-place Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who rolled the tournamentÕs first perfect game during the morning block, is averaging 220.16 with 2,642 pins. Kim Terrell continues to occupy third place, with 2,603 pins and a 216.91 average. Cara Honeychurch of Australia is in fourth with 2,596 pins and a 216.33 average, while Debbie McMullen of Denver, Colo., is in fifth with 2,578 pins and a 214.83 average.

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, North Richland Hills, Texas, jumped 10 places in Monday night's round to move into ninth place with 2,526 pins and a 210.50 average. Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., who sets a new PWBA mark by competing in her 201st consecutive tournament this week, is in 38th place, tied with local amateur Daralynn Stewart of Dallas. Each has 2,350 pins and a 195.83 average.

LIZ JOHNSON LEADS $50,000 FT. WORTH CLASSIC; TISH JOHNSON SETS PWBA RECORD

Liz Johnson

@Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y., holds a two-pin lead over Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., after the opening six games of qualifying at the $50,000 Ft. Worth Classic, underway at Don Carter CityView Lanes.

@While Liz Johnson was firing a six-game series of 1,355 in quest of her second PWBA championship in 2001, another Johnson was claiming a piece of bowling history at the same time. Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., set a new PWBA mark by completing the first squad of her 201st consecutive professional tournament. The old record was 200 consecutive tournaments, set in 1999 by Jan Schmidt, Rochelle, Ill., which Johnson tied last week in San Diego.

@"It feels great to be part of history; it really does," the 24-time titlist said afterward. "Too bad my bowling didn't fit the role Monday morning. My timing was out to lunch. Sometimes that happens when I've been bowling a lot of games. So I'm going to take a shower during the break and start over again in the evening squad. There are still a lot of games left to bowl this week.

@While Tish Johnson averaged only 179.83 for the first round of qualifying, Liz Johnson averaged 225.83. The latter noted that this week's Sport Bowling condition variation, in which the lanes are oiled 17 feet from the foul line and then buffed to 38 feet, seemed similar to the condition present at the St. Clair Classic, which she won in May. "I got to play straight up the gutter this morning, and that's a real comfort zone for me. The farther right I can play, the more comfortable I am; and the more comfortable I am, the more aggressive my bowling gets. I did put two balls in the gutter this morning, but that's the risk you take when you play that fine edge.'

@Duggan, who finished second in the recent Greater San Diego Open, has 1,353 pins for a 225.50 average. Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., is in third place with 1,296 pins and a 216.00 average. Debbie McMullen of Denver sits in fourth with 1,293 pins for a 215.50 average, and Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., rounds out the top five with1,285 pins and a 214.16 average.

@Hometown favorite Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is currently 19th in the 57-woman field with 1,235 pins and a 205.83 average.

Bohn Conquers New Territory

Parker Bohn III

@ Parker Bohn III reached a milestone in his career by capturing the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Saturday afternoon.@Bohn, of Jackson, N.J., faced long-time rival and friend Jason Couch, of Clermont, Fla., in the title match, 248-237, to win his 27th Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title and his first major.

@"I've been knocking on the door of the Masters for a long time now," said Bohn, who won $40,000 for first. "And to tell you the truth, I've been sick of being the "bridesmaid" in majors."

@This win ties Bohn with Mike Aulby for fourth on the all-time winner's list.

@"We both bowled great games, Jason just got a bad break, the worst break in bowling as a matter of a fact, and I was able to take advantage of that,Ó" said Bohn.

@Couch, who received $20,000 for second, suffered a solid 9-pin in the ninth frame of the game to see the title slip out of his grip and into Bohn's hands.

@Leading up to the ninth frame, the two left-handers bowled a clean game. Couch, who is now 1-3 against Bohn in title matches, started the match with a double and picked up single-pin spares in frames three and four (7-pin; 8-pin).

@Meanwhile, Bohn, who won his 25th title earlier this year at the National Bowling Stadium (National/Senior Doubles, with Rohn Morton) and his 26th in Latham, N.Y., converted two single-pin spares (7-pin first frame; 10-pin second frame), struck in the third and picked up another 10-pin in the fourth frame.

@The two left-handers both went on to strike repeatedly in the next four frames. While Bohn went on to strike in the ninth, Couch fell victim to the solid 9-pin and finished the match first with a strike and an eight-count spare (3-8 combination) in the 10th frame.

@"I couldn't have thrown the ball better, it was a perfect shot," said Couch, commenting on the solid nine-pin. "I'm not disappointed with the way I bowled today, I'm just very disappointed with the outcome."

@Bohn needed a nine-count spare and a strike in the 10th frame to win but stepped up with a strike on his first ball to secure the win.

@"This is a huge win for me," said Bohn. "It's definitely a monkey off my back."

@Bohn advanced to the title match by defeating Tony Reyes in the semifinal match, 200-170. Reyes, who was making his third championship round appearance, took home $14,000 for grabbing third place.

@Reyes, of San Jose, Calif., bested amateur Shannon Buchan in the second match, 237-190. Buchan, of Waterloo, Iowa, who was the only amateur in the field, placed fourth, worth $9,500.

@In the first match, Buchan outdid Chris Hayden, 201-170. Hayden, of Tampa, Fla., settled for fifth place and a $7,500 check.

Couch Untouchable In ABC Masters

Jason Couch

@ Jason Couch swept the field after match play to earn the top spot heading into the finals of the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium (NBS) Friday evening.

@Couch, of Clermont, Fla., defeated PBA Hall of Famer and former PBA Player of the Year (1999) Parker Bohn III, 739-694, to secure his spot in the championship round. He then moved on to defeat Tony Reyes, 638-544, to earn the top qualifying position.
The nine-time PBA titlist, who won his last title this past February in The Villages, Fla., is making his sixth championship round appearance of the year and his fifth consecutive. Couch is going for his fourth PBA "major" (1993 Touring Players Championship, Indianapolis; 1999 and 2000 Tournament of Champions [Overland Park, Kan.; Lake Zurich, Ill.).

@Couch, as the tournament leader, is 7-6 with a 219.36 average and his last two titles from the top qualifying position.
"This week is huge for me," said Couch. "This past winter put me in a good position for the player of the year race and I want to keep the momentum going."

@Bohn defeated Reyes, 698-614, to qualify second. Before beating Reyes, Bohn won over Shannon Buchan, 643-624. He then defeated Chris Hayden, 650-636. The 26-time titlist, who won at the NBS National/Senior Doubles with Rohn Morton earlier this year, is looking for his third win of the year. In 1998, Bohn rolled the 12th perfect televised 300 game in the ABC Masters against Chris Sand and Mike Mullin here at the National Bowling Stadium.

@Qualifying in the third position, Reyes, of San Jose, Calif., is going for his first title. The 27-year-old, third-year pro, who bested Chris Hayden, 683-607, to lock himself into the finals, is making his second consecutive championship round appearance after losing to Steve Wilson in Virginia Beach, Va., this past March.

@"I bowled a pretty bad game on TV a few months ago," mentioned Reyes, who rolled a 150 game in Virginia Beach, Va. "But you do everything once, bad and good. I look at this not only as a chance to redeem myself but most of all as a chance to win."

@After losing to Bohn, Hayden qualified fourth. The Tampa, Fla., resident, who is making his third finals of the year, is searching for his first title.

@Buchan bested Ricky Ward, 698-628, to push Ward out of the championship finals. The Waterloo, Iowa resident, who is the only amateur in the top five, is a TEAM USA member. The 27-year-old won back-to-back Bowlers Journal titles in 1996 and 1997.

Reyes Strong As Steel In ABC Masters

Tony Reyes

@Tony Reyes made his presence known after rounds four through seven of match play in the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium (NBS) Friday afternoon.

@Reyes, of San Jose, Calif., dominated Norm Duke in the winner's bracket of match play to shove the reigning PBA Player of the Year into the loser's bracket. The 27-year-old, who is looking for his first PBA title, won by seven pins, 638-631, in the three-game match. Duke, who won the 1993 ABC Masters, Tulsa, Okla., needed a double in the 10th frame of the last game to defeated Reyes and left the 10-pin on his first ball.

@This is the second time this year Reyes has beat Duke in a bracket event. In the PBA's Battle At Little Creek, Virginia Beach, Va., Reyes ousted Duke, 3-2, in the single-elimination competition.

@ "I think I'm able to get in his head," commented Reyes. "I respect him so much, he is definitely one of the best out here and to be able to beat Norm gives me a lot of confidence."

@"The bracket format seems to suite me pretty well," said Reyes. "It makes you concentrate a lot more on shot making - every single shot. I think luck is also a small factor but it really demands the most of you."

@Reyes went on to face Mike Mullin, of New City, N.Y., in the winner's bracket and defeated him, 726-641, with the help of a perfect game in game three.

@"Mike and I are good friends, we went to nearby colleges and got to know each other pretty well," said Reyes. "But once I get on the lanes, I'm out there to beat everyone."

@Also remaining undefeated is Parker Bohn III, of Jackson, N.J. Bohn, who won his 25th of 26 PBA titles at the National Bowling Stadium earlier this year (NBS National/Senior Doubles with Rohn Morton), discarded Tim Mack in the first round of the day, 717-537. The PBA Hall of Famer then moved on to best Rick Steelsmith, 668-607. Bohn is looking for his third win of the year.

@Jason Couch, of Clermont, Fla., has yet to lose a match. The former PBA Rookie of the Year (1992), who has made five of eight PBA championship round appearances this year, outdid Paul Renteria in the first match up of the day, 677-586. The Clermont, Fla., resident then went on to win 659-613 against Chris Sand. Couch is looking to win his 10th PBA title and his fourth PBA "major" (1993 Touring Players Championship, Indianapolis; 1999 Tournament of Champions, Overland Park, Kan.; 2000 Tournament of Champions, Lake Zurich, Ill.).

@Bohn and Couch will face each other in the next winners' bracket.

@Chris Hayden, of Tampa, is the fourth undefeated participant. He will face Tony Reyes in the upcoming winner's bracket.

@Moving to the loser's bracket, Duke faced Steve Hoskins and won 705-670 to stay alive and force Hoskins, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., out of the event. However, in the next match up, Duke lost to Shannon Buchan, 691-667, and was removed from the tournament.

@After facing a 624-602 loss to Hayden, Pete Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., found himself in the losers' bracket. The PBA Hall of Famer, who was trying to improve on his second-place finish in the ABC Masters last year, went head-to-head with Ricky Ward and was unable to pull off a win, allowing Ward to stay alive at his cost.

@Ward, of North Fort Myers, Fla., who won his fifth PBA title earlier this year in Burlington, N.C., won his fourth PBA title at the National Bowling Stadium in 1999.

@Other PBA notables eliminated from the tournament include Lee Vanderhoef, Michael Haugen Jr., Harry Sullins, Curtis Woods Jr. and Eric Forkel, Doug Kent and Wayne Webb.

@Those still alive in the loser'Õ bracket are Shannon Buchan, Mark Scroggins, Ricky Ward and Rick Steelsmith.

Weber Looks For Redemption

Pete Weber

@Pete Weber remains undefeated after the first three rounds of match play in the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium (NBS) Thursday evening.

@Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., won the first two rounds of match play to remain alive in the winner's bracket. The 25-time PBA titlist, who was the tournament leader for the 2000 ABC Masters, Albuquerque, N.M., and finished second, defeated Brian Himmler in the first three-game match (718-633) and PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli in the second (675-592). Weber, who needs an ABC Masters title to complete bowling's "Super Slam," (PBA National Championship, Tournament of Champions, BPAA's U.S. Open, Touring Players Championship and ABC Masters), averaged 232 for the two rounds.

@"I feel pretty good out there," said Weber. "Staying in the winner's bracket, especially in the first few rounds, is crucial."
"I have two seconds in the Masters so I am definitely ready to win it," commented Weber, who also finished second in 1983, Niagara Falls, N.Y. "It's still a long way off but if I can stay on the right track who knows."

@Also going 2-0 for the night was PBA Hall of Famer and former PBA Player of the Year (1999) Parker Bohn III. Bohn, of Jackson, N.Y., bested Jason Queen (703-674) and Joe Salvemini (665-601), respectively. The 26-time PBA champion won his first of two 2001 titles at the National Bowling Stadium in January when he paired with Rohn Morton in the NBS National/Senior Doubles.

@Reigning PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke sits in the winner's bracket as well. The Clermont, Fla., resident, who won the 1993 ABC Masters, in Tulsa, Okla., had control of the "wood" after overpowering both Vince Wood (598-551) and Curtis Woods Jr. (660-638).

@Jason Couch, of Clermont, Fla., surpassed both Dennis Horan (735-656) and Mike Edwards (737-706) to stay put in the winner's circle. The nine-time titlist, who won The Villages PBA Open, The Villages, Fla., this past February, is looking for his first ABC Masters win.

@Other PBA professionals with two wins include Steve Hoskins, Rick Steelsmith, Mark Scroggins, Chris Hayden, Wayne Webb and Tony Reyes.

@Undefeated amateurs include Tim Mack, Chris Sand and Paul Renteria.

@Qualifying leader Mike Scroggins was eliminated after falling behind Mike Edwards in the third round, 714-689. After losing the first match to Bob Belmont (656-610), he came back in the second match and defeated Chris Collins (652-640).

@Defending champion Mika Koivuniemi was eliminated in round three, after losing to Harry Sullins, 676-650. In the first match up, the Finland native lost to Mike Mullin (677-608). Koivuniemi, whose win last year was his first and only PBA title, went on to win the next match and discard Dino Castillo, 632-577.

@Other PBA notables who were eliminated also include Tommy Delutz Jr., Mike Aulby, Brian Himmler, Chris Barnes and Amleto Monacelli.

Strong PBA Presence At The Top As ABC Masters Match Play Begins

Mike Scroggins

@Mike Scroggins refused to relinquish the lead after the third round of qualifying in the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Thursday afternoon.

@Scroggins, of Amarillo, Texas, continued to hold onto a narrow lead after finishing 19 pins ahead of Andrew Cain. The left-hander, who won his lone Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title in 1992 in Sacramento, Calif., posted high games of 245 and 244 during the round. He has a 15-game 3,442 pinfall total and a 229 average. Scroggins is making his fourth match play appearance in the ABC Masters since 1991.

@"The first three times I made the top 64 I went 0-2 and was out," said Scroggins. "That is sitting in the back of my mind but those three times I was lucky to get into the top 64. This time, at least I have a little extra confidence since I have led all of qualifying."

@Remaining in second place is Cain. Cain, who finished second in all three rounds of qualifying, averaged 229 through the round. The 19-year-old amateur from Glendale, Ariz., opened the round with a high game of 242. The Arizona State student, who is majoring in aerospace engineering, has knocked down 3,423 pins.

@Averaging 254 to leap from 78th place to third was Patrick Allen. Allen, who has been competing on the PBA Tour since 2000, had a low game of 248 and a high game of 258 for the round. The Tarrytown, N.Y., resident, who has a high finish of sixth this year on the PBA Tour (Burlington, N.C.), has felled 3,325 pins. Allen, who is competing in his 12th ABC Masters event, finished second in the 1993 ABC Masters, Tulsa, Okla., after losing to Norm Duke in the title match.

@"I stopped trying to think so much," said Allen. "I was relaxed this round and it obviously helped me. I re-slugged some of my thumbholes and held the ball in a slightly different spot but that was about it."

@PBA and ABC Hall of Famer Mike Aulby, of Indianapolis claims fourth place. The 27-time PBA titlist, who won his last title earlier this year in Daly City, Calif., has a 3,313 pinfall total.

@Rounding out the top five is Tim Mack, of Garfield, N.J. (3,310). Mack, who is an amateur, rolled all games between 201 and 228 to shift from seventh to fifth.

@PBA notables also making the second cut include reigning PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke (tied 23rd), 10-time PBA titlist Steve Hoskins (32nd), PBA Hall of Famers Parker Bohn III (21st) and Pete Weber (tied - 41st) and two-time PBA Tournament of Champion winner Jason Couch (58th).

@Those who failed to advance include PBA rookie Tommy Jones (65th), Steve Jaros (86th), Jeff Lizzi (99th) and Justin Hromek (103rd).

CARA HONEYCHURCH WINS FIRST TITLE IN 2001 IN GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN

Cara Honeychurch

@Cara Honeychurch of Australia snagged her first title in 2001 by disposing of top-seeded Anne Marie Duggan, 200-165, in the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open at Grove Bowling Center Thursday.

@The 29-year-old lefthander included a five-bagger in her victory against La Habra, Calif.'s Stacy Rider in the semifinal match, 235-200, then stayed close to the pocket in the championship game while Duggan left 4-6-7 and 4-7-10 splits that she couldn't convert and struck only twice, after the match was out of reach.

@"I guess you could say I got the monkey off my back finally," said Honeychurch, who had finished second twice, third once, and eighth twice in previous tournaments this spring. "I told my husband Jim on the way over that maybe I was just meant to be seeded second, after I missed the top spot Wednesday by only four pins. Perhaps it was meant to be that I get a game under my belt and get lined up before bowling for the title. "

@"My goal tonight was to take the lane out of play, and keep the ball as straight as I could so that I could stay near the pocket. I'm not sure if that was the same strategy as the other players had, but it was mine and it worked for me."

@Honeychurch took home a $9,000 check for her efforts, while Duggan settled for $4,800. Rider, who earned the right to take on Honeychurch by defeating Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, in the opening shootout, 187-181-158, earned $3,000. Dorin-Ballard was rewarded with $2,500 for finishing fourth (in the shootout match, the third-seeded bowler cannot finish lower than fourth), and Adler won $2,200.

Scroggins Stays Put; ABC Masters Field Cut To 120

Mike Scroggins

@Mike Scroggins continued to lead the field after the second round of qualifying in the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Wednesday evening.

@Scroggins, who has led the entire tournament, was able to bowl a stable second round to remain in first place by three pins over second-place finisher Andrew Cain. Scroggins, of Amarillo, Texas, who won the 1999 Professional Bowlers Association's (PBA) National Resident Pro Championship at the National Bowling Stadium, registered only one game below 203 for the round. The left-hander, who owns one PBA national title and 19 PBA regional titles, has a 10-game pinfall total of 2,318.

@"Today seemed a bit tougher than yesterday," commented Scroggins, whose twin brother Mark is currently in 67th place. "But I was able to line up pretty quickly and from then on I barely missed the pocket."

@Remaining in second place is Cain. The 19-year old amateur, of Glendale, Ariz., started the round with a 256 game and later rolled a high game of 268. Cain, who is a two-time collegiate All-American for Arizona State, is a member of Junior TEAM USA 2001.

@Capturing third place is Tim Mack, of Garfield, N.J. Mack, who is 29-years-old, posted all five games in the round between 200 and 266. The 1998 World Bowler of the Year (Bowlers Journal), who has won titles on five continents, has upended 2,258 pins.

@Moving up from 40th place to sit in fourth is Chris Hayden. The Tampa, Fla., resident, who is competing in his seventh ABC Masters, had the second highest block total, 1,179, to bring his overall pinfall total to 2,241. (Shannon Buchan, of Waterloo, Iowa, bowled the highest block total, 1,204). Hayden averaged 235 for the round with high games of 269 and 257. The left-hander, who threw high games of 269 and 257, has a high finish of fifth this year on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour (Daly City, Calif.; PBA National Championship, Toledo, Ohio).

@"I love bowling this tournament," said Hayden. "Once you get past qualifying, the double-elimination, head-to-head matches are great. That's the kind of bowling that really gets me pumped up."

@Trailing Hayden by 32 pins to round out the top five is Joe Salvemini. Salvemini, who currently lives in Covina, Calif., but resided in Reno for about 10 years, posted a pair of high games of 247. The three-time PBA titlist, whose last win was in Austin, Texas, in 1989, has competed in three PBA events in 2001 and made match play once.

@The first perfect game of the tournament was rolled by Bentley Kam, of Honolulu. Kam, who finished 205th, bowled the 300 game in the first game of the second round. The 36-year-old is competing in his first ABC Masters tournament.

@Other PBA notables finishing in the top 120 include former PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Barnes (6th place), reigning PBA Player of the Year Norm Duke (27th place), PBA Hall of Famers Parker Bohn III (45th place) and Pete Weber (55th place) and former PBA Rookie of the Year Jason Couch (118th place).

@PBA professionals failing to make the first cut include PBA Hall of Famers Dave Husted (124th place), Brian Voss (167th place) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (290th).

@There is a tie for 120th place between Lance Satcher, of Reno, Nev., and Eddie De Atley, of Pompano Beach, Fla. There will be a one-game roll-off Thursday morning prior to the last round of qualifying to break the tie.

@The top 25 percent of the field (120) will return Thursday afternoon for an addition round of qualifying. The top 63 qualifiers plus defending champion Mika Koivuniemi will compete in double-elimination match play competition beginning Thursday evening. After two days of head-to-head three-game matches, decided by total pinfall, the top five will advance to Saturday's championship round to compete for the title and the first-place prize of $40,000.

DUGGAN DIGS IN TO TAKE TOP SEED FOR GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN TV FINALS

Anne Marie Duggan

@Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., held off a determined Cara Honeychurch in the final game of match play to secure the top seed for Thursday's TV stepladder finals of the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open at Grove Bowling Center.

@Honeychurch defeated Duggan in actual score, 177-172, but even with the 30 bonus pins she received for winning the match, the Australian star was unable to overcome the 39-pin lead Duggan took into the final game. DugganÕs total pinfall count through 42 games tallied up to 9,110, and Honeychurch closed at 9,106. Duggan finished with a 16-8-0 match play record, while Honeychurch's was 17-7-0.

@"The conditions were pretty much as I thought they would be for the final set," Duggan admitted. "I don't think we could get any closer than we were; we both struck in practice but then struggled during the game. That's the kind of shot it was. Any mistake you made was amplified on the lanes, and we were both probably pressing a little to get the upper hand in the match. I left two splits and took the 2-pin off the 5, so I think I was the one who lucked out in the end."

@Joining Duggan and Honeychurch among the five TV finalists are defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas; Stacy Rider, La Habra, Calif., and Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., who finished second last week in the Wheelchair Awareness Classic. Dorin-Ballard finished with 9,075 pins and a 14-9-1 match play record; Rider clocked in with 8,973 pins and an 18-5-1 record, while Adler moved past Marianne DiRupo of Succasunna, N.J., in the last game to take fifth with 8,913 pins and a 14-10-0 record.

DUGGAN STAKES HER CLAIM TO TOP SPOT AT $50,000 GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN

Anne Marie Duggan

@Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., carded a six-game series of 1,394 pins Wednesday morning to move back into the top spot at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

@Duggan, who led after 18 games, improved her match play win-loss-tie record to 13-5-0 and total pinfall to 7,833 to lead Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, by 13 pins going into the final six games. Dorin-Ballard is the defending champion and is trying to capture her third title in 2001. Duggan, the 1994 PWBA Player of the Year, hopes to score her first victory since winning the AMF Rocket City Challenge in 1998.

@"This is definitely a 'make your spares and keep the ball in the pocket' situation this week," said Duggan, who rolls one of the more powerful strike balls on the women's tour and is averaging 206.75 for the tournament. "I'm playing deep inside on the lane and using a three-piece reactive ball, which is a very weak-hooking ball, to keep the shot as straight as I can. I played the lanes Wednesday morning the same way I played them Tuesday night, and I don't foresee any changes for Wednesday afternoon. The key for me is to stay as firm as I can with my shot."

@Tuesday's leader, Cara Honeychurch of Australia, slipped into third place, 120 pins behind Dorin-Ballard. Honeychurch finished Wednesday morning with an 11-7-0 record and 7,700 total pins. Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is fourth with a 12-6-0 match play record and 7,626 pins, while Stacy Rider, La Habra, Calif., stays in the top five with 7,612 pins and a 14-4-0 record.

@Local amateur Jolene Etem, Escondido, Calif., is in 17th with 7,259 pins and a 9-8-1 match play record.

Scroggins Starts Strong In ABC Masters

Mike Scroggins

@Mike Scroggins set the pace early after the first round of qualifying in the American Bowling Congress Masters at the National Bowling Stadium Tuesday evening.

@Scroggins, of Amarillo, Texas, competed in the first of four squads and held the lead all day, finishing 20 pins ahead of second-place finisher Andrew Cain. The Amarillo, Texas, resident, whose twin brother Mark is also competing in the event, averaged 237 through the first five-game round. The 37-year-old, who owns one Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) national title (Sacramento, Calif.; 1992), has a 1,189 pinfall total. He posted all but one game in the round at 233 or better, including high games of 265 and 258. Scroggins' success at the National Bowling Stadium is nothing new - he won the PBA's National Resident Pro Championship here in 1999.

@Grabbing second place was Cain. Cain, of Glendale, Ariz., has toppled 1,169 pins. He rolled all games at 203 or better. Third place belongs to Jerry Casebolt, of Greeley, Colo. Casebolt has upended 1,155 pins. Trailing Casebolt by only two pins to round out the top four is Eddie Williams. Williams, of Van Nuys, Calif., registered a high game of 276 and has knocked down 1,155 pins.

@Finishing in sixth place is 1997 ABC Masters champion Jason Queen. Queen, who defeated Eric Forkel in the title match to win the 1997 ABC Masters, has a 1,142 pinfall total and a 228 average.
Grabbing 18th place is three-time ABC Masters champion (1989, 95, 98) and ABC and PBA Hall of Famer Mike Aulby. Aulby, who won his 27th PBA title earlier this year in Daly City, Calif., has a 1,091 pinfall total.

@Last year's tournament leader Pete Weber is in 21st place. Weber, who lost to Mika Koivuniemi in the 2000 ABC Masters title match, has knocked down 1,089 pins. He finished the round with a high game of 246.

HONEYCHURCH HOLDS THE LEAD AT $50,000 GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN

Cara Honeychurch

@Australia's Cara Honeychurch maintains a razor's-edge lead over the field after 30 games at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

@Honeychurch finished Tuesday's action with a 9-3-0 win-loss-tie match play record and 6,449 total pins to put a 10-pin cushion between herself and Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla. Duggan finished the day with an 8-4-0 record and 6,439 pins. While Duggan is averaging slightly more than Honeychurch, 206.63 - 205.96, Honeychurch has one more victory in match play and thus 30 more bonus pins, pushing her ahead of Duggan in total pinfall.

@Honeychurch, the 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year, said there's a great deal of difference between this week's lane conditions and those of last week. "For one thing, we're playing on a wood surface here, and last week we played on synthetic lanes. In addition, although the oil is still applied on the lane from the foul line to the 17-foot mark, this week it's buffed out to 44 feet. Last week, it was just to 34 or 35 feet. So that means this week you have to be more precise with your shotmaking."

@"Also, the fact that the oil is buffed out so far fools a bowler into thinking she's dealing with a long-oil pattern, but the equipment choices that she would logically think to make for long oil don't work. I wound up using a very aggressive ball that just rolled itself out in the oiled part of the lane and arched very smoothly into the pocket."

@Just behind Duggan is defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, with 6,430 pins and an 8-4-0 record. Stacy Rider, La Habra, Calif., sprinted from ninth to fourth place with the best match play record of the day, 10-2-0, garnering a total of 6,299 pins. Marianne DiRupo, Succasunna, N.J., is eight pins behind Rider with total pinfall of 6,292 and an 8-4-0 record.

@Local amateur Jolene Etem, Escondido, Calif., stands at 6-6-0 in match play and is in 22nd place with 5,875 pins for a 189.83 average.

AUSTRALIA'S CARA HONEYCHURCH HOPS INTO FIRST PLACE IN SAN DIEGO

Cara Honeychurch

@Cara Honeychurch of Australia put together a 5-1-0 match play record and averaged 209.33 Tuesday morning to jump into the lead at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

@Honeychurch, the 2000 PWBA Rookie of the Year, carded a high game of 249 in TuesdayÕs first of two match play rounds to boost her overall pinfall total to 5,090 pins and tournament average to 205.83. Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is close behind with 5,082 pins after her 3-3-0 effort.

@Honeychurch, who is seeking her first PWBA victory this year, was grateful to finish the block in first place. "You could certainly say the lane conditions on this squad were challenging,Ó said the former international star. ÒYou needed to make good shots and pick up your spares, because you couldnÕt count on being able to roll a really big score to pull you up from a bad game."

@Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., is sitting in third place after the first round of match play with 5,061 pins and a 3-3-0 record. Monday's leader, Anne Marie Duggan, holds fourth place with 5,050 pins and a 3-3-0 record, while another Australian and former national teammate of Honeychurch's, Maxine Nable, is in fifth with 4,934 pins and a 4-2-0 win-loss-tie mark.

@Local amateur Jolene Etem, Escondido, Calif., moved from 23rd to 16th place with a 4-2-0 record and 4,797 pins. She is averaging 194.87.

DUGGAN TAKES THE LEAD AT $50,000 GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN

Anne Marie Duggan

@Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., outlegged Carolyn Dorin-Ballard in Monday's qualifying round at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, taking a four-pin lead into Tuesday's action at Grove Bowling Center.

@Duggan had four games under 200 Monday, but her combined two-day pinfall of 3,789 was enough to survive Dorin-Ballard's closing 266 game and two-day tally of 3,785. Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is seeking her third title this year, while Duggan is in search of her first championship since 1998.

@"Yesterday I had one of the best blocks I've bowled in some time; and while I was still happy with the way I bowled today, I didn't get the same pin carry as I did Sunday. I think the lanes were much tougher today," said Duggan, who is averaging 210.50 thus far.

@The 15-time PWBA champion said her game has been on the upswing since her husband, Pat, gave her some tips during the Albuquerque Open three weeks ago. "He told me that I needed to let the ball swing from the shoulder more and release it cleanly, and that I shouldn't try to help the ball down the lane. I've been working on that and am starting to get very comfortable with that feeling."

@PWBA Hall of Fame member Robin Mossontte, Newhall, Calif., is in third, 32 pins behind Dorin-Ballard at 3,753, while another Californian, Kim Terrell of Daly City, is in fourth with 3,726 pins. Cara Honeychurch of Australia rounds out the top five with 3,684 pins.

@Sunday's leader, Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, N.J., dropped into 10th place following Monday's round of play. She is averaging 200.22 with 3,604 pins for 18 games.

DORIN-LIZZI PACES THE FIELD AT $50,000 GREATER SAN DIEGO OPEN

Cathy Dorin-Lizzi

@Cathy Dorin-Lizzi, Linden, N.J., has the pole position after the first nine games of qualifying at the $50,000 Greater San Diego Open, underway at Grove Bowling Center.

@Dorin-Lizzi was one of a group of three bowlers who had to replay one game because they bowled on an incorrect pair of lanes. She made the most of the opportunity by popping a 256 score to tally 2,000 pins for the day and move ahead of Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., who finished with 1,985 pins. The two are averaging 222.22 and 220.55, respectively.

@"I'm going to savor every moment of this until 11 a.m. tomorrow, when the next squad begins," Dorin-Lizzi said. "After I missed the cut in Omaha [in the Miller High Life Open]," I changed my approach from five steps to four. I've always been a hair's bit late in my timing, and switched to four steps to try to correct that. It's been difficult to do, but I've gotten more comfortable with the footwork and trust myself a lot more.

@"Trusting myself has always been my biggest weakness. It's hard to be the sibling of one of the best bowlers around [Carolyn Dorin-Ballard], and I put a lot of pressure on myself to live up to other people's expectations. I'm aware that I have to beat 50 other bowlers, but people are more concerned with how I do against Carolyn, and I let myself get caught up into that too often. I have to remind myself to develop my own talent and stay within my own game and within the moment."

@Trailing Dorin-Lizzi and Duggan are Julie Jackson, Rural Hall, N.C., with 1,935 pins and a 215.0 average; Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, 1,925 pins and a 213.88 average; and Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., 1,894 pins and a 210.44 average.

TISH JOHNSON WINS NO. 24 AT $50,000 WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC

Tish Johnson

@Tish Johnson picked up career title No. 24 and edged closer to the million-dollar mark in career earnings Thursday by running away and hiding from Kim Adler, 210-150, in the title bout of the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic at Country Club Bowl.

@Johnson, Northridge, Calif., strung the first five strikes before a 3-7-9 split stopped her in the sixth frame. Adler, Cocoa, Fla., was unable to muster any firepower against Johnson after giving Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., the slip in the semifinal game. After dropping Bishop 248-236, Adler opened four times in the championship match.

@"The lanes definitely changed on me from one game to the next; I don't feel like I lost because I missed my spares, but because the lane condition changed and I simply ran out of time to figure it out," Adler said. "I finally did solve the puzzle on my fill ball in the 10th frame, when I struck; so now I know what to do the next time I encounter this."

@Johnson's $9,000 first prize moved her career earnings to $994,340, and she credited the ease of her victory to the lane transition that baffled Adler. "I like bowling when some of the oil has been taken off the lane, because then I can really get my hand into the shot and let it rip," she admitted. "The closer I get the ball to the gutter, the better off I am. Once I saw Kim starting to fish for a shot in the fourth frame, I knew the match was going to be mine."

@Bishop earned the right to go against Adler by defeating Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., and Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., in the opening three-way shootout match, 223-187-169. Adler took home $4,800 for finishing second, while Bishop was rewarded with $3,000; Barrette with $2,500; and Duggan with $2,200.

TISH JOHNSON IS TOP SEED FOR FINALS OF $50,000 WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC

Tish Johnson

@Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., waited until the final position-round game to become tournament leader and needs to win just one more game to capture her 24th career title and the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic championship.

@Johnson defeated Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., 234-197, in the 42nd game of the tournament to move into the lead with 9,762 pins and a 17-7-0 match play record. Adler finished match play with 9,722 pins and a 13-11-0 record.

@"I thought that if I stayed close in that last game, I'd have a chance at taking the top seed," Johnson said. "I had just come off the position-round pair in the previous game, and I had switched balls during that game. When you're bowling on the Sport Bowling condition, you have to get the right ball in your hand as soon as you can. Otherwise, you don't carry. So I was able to start out confident and strong, and I opened the game with strikes.

@"I prefer bowling from the top spot; the worse you can finish is second."

@Adler noted that her position-round loss to Johnson was a first. "This is the first time Tish has ever beaten me in this round, but I've never beaten her on TV before, either, so maybe everything will switch around for me. I like bowling from the No. 2 position. I've won a lot of my titles from there, so I'm happy."

@Joining Johnson and Adler in the TV stepladder Thursday at Country Club Bowl are Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., who finished with 9,628 pins and a 17-7-0 record; Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., with 9,522 pins and a 15-9-0 record, and Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., who leapfrogged both Kathy Tribbey of Newberg, Ore., and Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., in the final game to close with 9,483 pins and an 18-6-0 match play record.

@Barrette, Duggan and Bishop open the TV finals at 2 p.m. Thursday with a three-way shootout match. The winner takes on Adler, and the winner of that match goes up against Johnson for the title and $9,000 winner's payday.

@Johnson, who is $14,660 away from becoming pro bowling's third woman millionaire in career earnings, could cross the threshold Thursday by rolling a perfect game on TV. Travelodge is offering a $50,000 bonus to any of the finalists who bowl a 300 in the stepladder, which will be televised by ESPN2 Monday, June 11, at 10:30 p.m. and re-aired Sunday, June 17, at 3 a.m. (all TV times are Eastern).

ADLER PADS LEAD AT $50,000 WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC

Kim Adler

@Tournament leader Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., gained some breathing room Wednesday morning at the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, increasing her lead over second-place Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., to 139 pins.

@Adler, who is seeking her 15th career title, won only three of six matches in the morning round but knocked down 1,331 pins to boost her total pinfall to 8,393. She currently owns an 11-7-0 match play record.

@"You might say I had a difficult start, seeing as how my first three opponents shot a total of 790 against me," Adler said wryly. "I did find the lanes a little oilier in this block, and I did the best I could with the equipment I had gotten ready.

@"I haven't led a tournament since last spring [at the Clabber Girl Gr. Terre Haute Open], so it's taken me a little while to get acclimated to that. I find that if I just think of myself as being in seventh place, then I don't give myself a reason to look either over my shoulder or too far ahead. That allows me to concentrate on each shot and each game as it comes."

@With six games of match play left, Johnson, who is competing in her 199th consecutive pro tournament, has a 12-6-0 record with 8,254 pins. Following her in third is Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., with 8,230 pins and an 11-7-0 record. Lisa Bishop, Belleville, Mich., is in fourth with 8,148 pins and a 14-4-0 record, while Leanne Barrette rounds out the top five with 8,137 pins and an 11-7-0 record.

@Debbie McMullen, Denver, Colo., rolled the tournament's third 300 game in her opening match Wednesday morning. She is in 18th place with 7,675 pins, 462 pins away from the final spot in ThursdayÕs TV stepladder finals. Adler and Johnson own the other two perfect games thus far.

ADLER'S LEAD NARROWED AT $50,000 WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC

Kim Adler

@Kim Adler, Cocoa, Fla., saw her 251-pin lead narrowed to 79 pins during Tuesday afternoonÕs match play at the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

@Adler managed only a 1,205-pin set for six games in the second match play round, and won just three matches, to total 6,972 pins for 30 games. In the meantime, Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., put together the round's highest score, 1,422, and won six of eight matches to move into second place with 6,893 pins.

@"I definitely found the lanes a little spottier this afternoon than I did this morning," Adler said. "I was back to playing my 'B' and 'C' games.

@"I'm comfortable with what I'll be looking at Wednesday morning, condition-wise, but I'll definitely have to think about what kind of equipment and lane strategy to use Wednesday afternoon."

@Adler, who considers herself a "tweener" (a bowler whose ball hook pattern falls between a straighter, down-and-in shot and a big curving hook), feels that bowlers with similar styles have had a tougher time acclimating to the Sport Bowling condition used at the first four PWBA stops this year than have the player at the extremes. "I think that the Sport condition was designed to be equal for everyone who has been bowling well thus far, but that it hurts "tweeners" like me. We just don't seem to generate the same pin carry as the straighter players and the 'crankers.' I hope they can get a truer 'read' on how it affects our shot so that the conditions will be equalized for all.'

@In third place with 6,830 pins and an 8-4-0 record is Monday's leader, Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla. Leanne Barrette, Pleasanton, Calif., stands fourth, also with an 8-4-0 record and 6,809 pins, while Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., is in fifth with 6,784 pins and a 7-5-0 match play record.

@Defending champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, is in 10th place with 6,541 pins and a 5-7-0 match play record, 243 pins off the pace to make Thursday's TV stepladder finals.

ADLER IS PERFECT AS SHE TAKES OVER THE LEAD AT WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC

Kim Adler

@Cocoa, Fla.'s Kim Adler did her own impression of the desert roadrunner bird Tuesday morning and left the rest of the field in the starting blocks during the first round of match play at the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

@Adler's first career 800 series -823- in the final three games of the block, which included scores of 289 and 300, propelled her to a 1,519 six-game series and a 251-pin edge over Monday's leader, Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla. Adler lost just one match as she pushed her tournament average to 230.29.

@"I've bowled well the past few weeks, but because I didn't bowl in leagues and tournaments during our winter break, I didn't have the competition mentality I needed when it came to the ninth and tenth frames," she said. "I wasn't operating at the standard I wanted to and needed to when it came time to make a crucial shot."

@"Plus, I had to employ my 'B' and 'C' hand releases in past weeks to meet the lane conditions, instead of the one I prefer to use. Today, I found the conditions very similar to the way they were in Connecticut when I bowled in leagues there 10 years ago, and I was able to get very comfortable and play my 'A' game."

@Adler's 300 game is the second thus far in the Wheelchair Awareness Classic, the other coming Monday from Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif. Johnson, who went 2-4-0 in match play Tuesday morning, is currently in fifth place with 5,291 pins. The rest of the top five include second-place Duggan, with a 4-2-0 match play record and 5,426 pins; Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif., 4-2-0 and 5,391 pins; and Kendra Gaines, Sebring, Fla., 2-4-0 and 5,295 pins.

DUGGAN'S CLOSING 299 MOVES HER INTO THE WHEELCHAIR AWARENESS CLASSIC LEAD

Anne Marie Duggan

@Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., relied on a round-ending game of 299 to catapult into the lead after 18 games of qualifying at the Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl.

@Duggan, who is seeking her first PWBA national title in three years, and six other players eclipsed early leader Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, N. Richland Hills, Texas, in Monday's action. Duggan fired a nine-game series of 1,983 pins to total 4,052 for two days, with a 225.11 cumulative average.

@"I'm very happy with the way I bowled today, and the way I've been bowling all season so far," said Duggan. "I haven't won, and I haven't gotten myself to the TV show yet, but I've made every cut and just missed the TV show for the WIBC Queens tournament in May."

@Duggan also indicated that the daytime format employed in Mesa this week agrees with her game. "I enjoy bowling nine games all at once during the day, because you get a chance to eat dinner at a regular hour and relax a little at night. When you get a little older, you learn to pace yourself better, and that helps when you're bowling more games at a time."

@Tish Johnson, Northridge, Calif., is sitting in second place with 4,045 pins and a 224.72 average. Johnson, who is competing in her 199th consecutive professional tournament, rolled the tournament's only 300 thus far, on the same pair of lanes (31 and 32) that Duggan shot her 299 on a few games later.

@Carolyn Dorin-Ballard continues to hold the hot hand on the PWBA Spring/Summer 2001 Tour, setting the pace in the first qualifying round of the $50,000 Wheelchair Awareness Classic, underway at Country Club Bowl in Mesa.

@Dorin-Ballard has now led for eight consecutive rounds of play over two tournaments, including the championship round of the $50,000 Albuquerque Open. SundayÕs results for nine games found the N. Richland Hills, Texas resident 63 pins ahead of Anne Marie Duggan, Edmond, Okla., 2,132-2,069. Dorin-Ballard ended her opening gambit with a 278 game to average 236.88 for the day.

@ÒI have been bowling well the last four weeks,Ó she acknowledged. ÒWhat is interesting is that, after yesterdayÕs practice round, I thought this would be a very low-scoring tournament. Then I came in today and found the lanes very different from SaturdayÕs condition. They started out pretty tough, but I was able to get comfortable with them by the end of our nine-game block. Usually, you can predict how the lanes will change over the week after the first day of qualifying, but IÕm not even going to try to predict how theyÕll change this week.Ó
